hey so do y'all think that the fact that Wolf 359 starts as a lighthearted comedy and gets progressively darker and more serious as it goes is tied to the fact that from Eiffel's perspective, it IS some absurd sitcom situation to him at the start. And as he is forced to face bigger and darker problems both from outside and in himself, the tone of the show shifts accordingly. Because he IS still the main character, the story is told from his perspective, even when it isn't directly through his audio logs anymore we are still hearing it through him in a way. Music in Wolf 359
Hey so uhh I meant this to be a relatively short informal analysis post but then it accidentally turned in a 1150 word essay. Whoops! Anyway, it’s about the role music plays in Wolf 359, both on a practical level outside the story and a narrative/thematic level inside the story. I wrote this all in one go with minimal proofreading, so I sincerely hope it’s understandable and that my points are good. As always, feedback is welcome so long as you’re nice about it!
Here it is, under the read more because it’s long as hell:
One of my favorite things about Wolf 359 is the way it talks about and uses music. Like, the fact that the aliens are trying to contact humanity just because they want to learn how to make music is one of my all-time favorite reveals in the podcast because it’s just so profound! And it gives me a lot to try and unpack (which I am going to try and do right now).
Obviously, there is a practical element to the significance of music in the narrative. It is an audio-only medium, after all, and music provides a welcome break to all the dialogue and drama. Eiffel even references its ability to act as a way to ease the tension in Mission Mishaps: A Little Night Music, though that was almost definitely not an intentional wink to a more meta reason for the music. I’m just making a fun little reference to an episode I remember. Anyways, more to the point: music is really the only art form that can feasibly be introduced in a podcast. Theater is maybe an exception? However, I think putting a play into an audio drama would get a bit complicated on a storytelling level. Though if someone could pull that off, it’d probably be very cool, like some Hamlet vibes. But that’s irrelevant, so I digress. The point is, the medium was probably a strong motivator for the intense significance given to music.
Aside from the medium itself, the premise also lends itself to music being the connecting thread throughout the story. Now, I don’t know which idea came first: Doug Eiffel being the communications officer probing deep space, or the fact that the aliens want humans to teach them music. Regardless, those two facts are intrinsically linked. Given Eiffel’s role on the station, there is not really any other subtle way for the aliens to try and get his attention. All he can do is listen; he can’t receive any visible messages over the vacuum of space, not without a cable television to view them on, and if the aliens just spoke to him to slow burn of the plot and the eventual reveal would be ruined. Music is the best way for them to reach out in a way that fits neatly in the narrative they’re trying to build.
Now, let’s move away from external factors, shall we? I want to dive into the significance within the text. Obviously, music is significant to different characters in different ways. Minkowski is a total musical theater nut (the absolute queen), to the point of pursuing it over and over again even when she fails continually. Her devotion to music mirrors her devotion and stubbornness in all other aspects of her life, in addition to adding unexpected depth and nuance to her character. Regarding Eiffel, I think it’s safe to assume that he loves pop music the same way he loves pop culture. Plus, it’s given as one of the first and only ways he bonds with his daughter, as written in the episode Limbo:
“Doug was seeing little baby Anne pretty much every other day, talking to her every day, teaching her to play the Jaws theme on her little dinky kid xylophone, all the good stuff.”
It’s notable also, that Doug’s worst action, the thing that permanently put a wedge between him and his daughter, ended up making her go deaf. Even if she’s still able to appreciate music on some level, because deaf people can do that, it will still be a fundamentally different experience for her and Doug. I’ve posted about this once before, and I fully believe they made the decision to have Anne go deaf as opposed to some other disability because of the significance of audio and speaking and music to Doug’s life. It emphasizes how extreme what happened was, how thoroughly that mistake drove his family away from him (for good reason, I might add, I’m not trying to excuse him). I could write a whole other essay on Doug and his daughter though, so for now I’ll move on.
To be perfectly honest, it’s been a long time since I’ve listened to the podcast, and I don’t entirely remember what the rest of the characters say about what music means to them. If anyone who has a more encyclopedic knowledge of the characters and podcast wants to chime in here, I’d be fascinated to hear what sort of concrete examples there are of music being significant other than the ones I’ve mentioned. I’m pretty sure Hera is interested in music the same way she is interested in books and other forms of human art, and I have a vague memory of Lovelace mentioning a song that was important to her in one of the episodes, but the details escape me. Suffice it to say, the characters do interact with music in ways that are distinct and which reveal aspects of their character. Just goes to show that even without the whole “alien” thing, music is an important part of almost all of the major cast members’ lives.
And of course, I can’t write a Wolf 359 meta without linking it back to the anticapitalist theme of the whole story. It is so, so profound that out of all the amazing tech of Goddard Futuristics, all they are prepared to offer the immensely powerful extraterrestrial group, the one thing the aliens want is… music. Classical music, even, something that is widely considered unprofitable and frivolous as a career path, something that has little market value in a soulless capitalist world. As it turns out, that music is the most important and revolutionary thing humanity has to offer. And there’s added depth, because it’s not just that the aliens want to learn our music; our music quite literally saves Earth as a whole! Bob the alien says, that for species they decide not to bring into the fold of their alliance, they often have to destroy all members of that species. Humanity certainly would have met that fate, if not for our talent in music. I don’t know about you guys, but that drives me insane!! The fact that quite literally, humanity’s saving grace is our music? It’s such a poetic and remarkable theme to have, and one that I think is very applicable to real life. Humans have been making music for at least 40,000 years, probably more. It’s a fundamental urge, I think, to create music, whether through singing, drumming, playing instruments, whatever. Plus human’s aren’t even the only species that makes music, so you could reasonably extend Wolf 359’s statement to say that Earth’s saving grace and its most beautiful feature is its music. My favorite flavor, though, comes when you intertwine music’s importance with the anticapitalist ideas of the podcast. Because music is not inherently profitable or conventionally innovative (i.e. not innovative according to tech bros) and yet it is our most important invention. That is just such an amazing message to me, and it really, really resonates.

Something always fascinating to me is the "character who thinks they're in a different genre" phenomenon. The theme of the story you are telling determines what the right and wrong actions to take are; but the characters, reacting in-universe to the situation, don't know what story they're in, and the exact same responses can be what saves you or damns you depending on what kind of story the author is telling and what the story's message is about what life is like.
In Wolf 359, Warren Kepler approaches the mysterious and powerful aliens with threats; he kills their liaison and tries to position himself as a powerful opponent. However, he's shown to be wrong and making things worse: his preemptive aggression is unwarranted and unhelpful and bites him in the ass. The aliens want to communicate and understand humanity and share our music. It's Doug Eiffel, the pacifistic (and kind of scaredy-cat) communications officer who loves to talk and share pop culture, who talks to them and understands that the aliens are scary not because they want to kill us but because they don't understand the concepts of individuals and death. Talking to them, communicating with them, understanding where they're coming from and and bringing them to understand a human point of view, is what succeeds. Openness rather than suspicion, trust rather than aggression. Kepler thinks he's a dramatic space marine protecting the Earth from the alien threat by showing them humans are tough and can take them, but that's not the kind of story this is.
Conversely, in Janus Descending, Chel is in awe of the strange and beautiful alien world around her. She wants to touch it, understand it, get up close to it. When she sees a crystal alien dog, she wants to befriend it, despite Peter's warning. But when she gets close to it, extending her arm in greeting, it attacks her and drags her down into the cave to try to eat her. This sets the inevitable tragedy in motion. Suspicion is warranted; trust will get you killed. Because this is a sci-fi horror, with a major running thematic reading about how racism and sexism will destroy your brain and your society, and how the people who think they're too smart to be prejudiced don't see their own prejudice and will end up ruining the lives of the people they still don't fully see as equals, this kind of trust that Chel shows this strange alien is tragic. However it is also a horror story where there are very real hibernating space snakes ready to wake up and eat the fresh meat that has landed on their planet, and by being too trusting Chel has accidentally introduced herself to one.
Kepler, suspicious and ready to shoot any alien he doesn't understand, would likely have survived Janus Descending; Chel, with her enthusiasm for learning about and meeting aliens, would have been a wonderful and helpful member of the Wolf 359 crew.
In a similar manner, in Alien, Ellen Ripley yells to the rest of her crew not to bring the attacked crewmember with the alien on his face back on the ship and into the medical bay, you don't know what contamination that thing might have; she's ignored. She tells them not to let the crewmember out of quarantine even though he seems fine; she's ignored again. Ripley is the one person protesting this isn't safe, we don't know what's going on, and she is consistently ignored, until an alien bursts out of her crewmate's chest and then eats everyone and Ripley is proven to be right and also the only survivor. (And it turns out that the science officer consistently overriding her protests was an android sent by the company that contracted them, and said android was given orders to bring the alien back so the company could study it and do weapons development with it, try not to let the crew find out about it, and kill them if he had to in order to do so!)
Ripley's paranoia and mistrust of the situation was correct, because Alien is a space horror and the theme is in space no one can hear you scream (also corporations consider you expendable).
Conversely, in All Systems Red, we have a damaged and almost-combat-overridden Murderbot being brought back into the PreservationAux hab medical bay after being attacked by other SecUnits. Gurathin becomes the one person protesting this isn't safe, we don't know what's going on, he doesn't want to let Murderbot out because it's hacked and probably sabotaging them for the company contracted their security and sent it with them. Gurathin thinks he is the Ellen Ripley here! He is trying to warn his teammates not to make a dangerous mistake that will get everyone killed!
However, All Systems Red is a very different story than Alien, and Murderbot is neither a traitor on behalf of the company to sabotage them and steal alien remnants for weapons development, nor a threat to the humans - it's a friend, it's a good person, and it wants to help them against both companies willing to screw them over. Trusting it and helping it is the right thing to do and is what saves their lives. Gurathin is proven to be wrong.
If everyone on the Nostromo crew had listened to Ellen Ripley, they would still be alive (except Kane. RIP Kane), because this is a horror story about being isolated and hunted and going up against this horrifying thing that wants to kill and eat you and just keeps getting stronger. If everyone on the PreservationAux team listened to Gurathin, they would all be dead, because this is a story about friendship and teamwork and trust and overcoming trauma and accepting the personhood of someone very different from you.
Same responses. Different context. And so very different moral conclusions.
Warren Kepler was about how the brash violent over-confident approach to things you don't understand is wrong, and that openness and developing that understanding between people is what's important; Chel was about the tragedy of trust destroying a Black woman who wanted so much to believe in a world that could be kind and beautiful. Ripley was about a woman whose expertise and safety warnings were ignored and brushed aside and everyone who did so died because of it; Gurathin was about how even justified fear shouldn't mean you make someone else a scapegoat and mistrust them because they seem scary.
Sometimes you're in the wrong genre because you need to be, because the author is trying to show how not to react to the situation they set up in order to build the mood and the theme they're trying to convey.

Where are all the Audio Fiction Fandoms?
To be clear, this isn't me complaining, and I know, there are plenty of fandoms for audio fiction podcasts and the like.
But I have always found it weird how few shows get the big, self-sustaining kinds of fandoms, the ones where there's always at least a little trickle of fanfic and fanart. So weird, in fact, that I've been thinking about it on and off for the last 5-6 years, and I have a few theories I'd like to share with y'all as to why, and to see if I can't get some feedback from the audio fiction fans on Tumblr.
Theory 1: Audience Size
The first theory is mostly about demographics - fundamentally, a fandom has to be large enough to sustain itself, and only a certain number of audience members are going to become the kind of fans who make fan works, so ultimately, an audio fiction show needs to get popular enough before fan works start appearing.
There's plenty of support for this theory, of course - Welcome to Night Vale, Wolf 359, The Adventure Zone and The Magnus Archives are titans in the fiction podcast space, and indeed they have big fandoms. But, with that said, there's plenty of other podcasts that are just as big that don't have fandoms, so this can't explain it all.
Theory 2: Audience Distance
This one is similar to the first, but subtly different. A few creators in the space I've talked to have noted that they'd never make fan works of their friend's shows - that feels weird, like deliberately treading on their friend's work. They don't have this feeling when playing in big fandoms, or fandoms where they don't know the creator. This implies to me that fans need a certain level of distance from creators in order to feel comfortable playing with that fictional space. While this is less the case now with the fall of Twitter, a lot of shows, for better or worse, used social media as the primary pillar of their marketing, as well as using Patreons with special access as part of their monetization strategies.
In short, it's never been easier to get close to the creators of your favourite shows, and for smaller shows, the most exuberant fans - the kinds who might make fan works - are also the kinds of fans who will take those opportunities to get closer to the creators. In short, there just might not enough social distance for fans to be comfortable creating works, not at least until the audience grows sufficiently that a creator simply cannot be that close with their entire audience.
This theory I'm not so sure about these days - this one is probably a lot more dependent on the generation of fandom you belong to. Older generations of fandom are more likely to have this queasiness around creator closeness, because they were creating in a time where fandom was a shadow realm, desperately hidden from The Powers That Be, and "No Copyright Infringement Intended" was carved into fan works as an eldritch attempt at legal protection.
Theory 3: Audience Age
To be clear - there are fans of all ages out there. But it is clear to me that fandom trends young, and part of that is just the time needed to participate in fan culture - creating and consuming takes a lot of time, time that tends gets scarcer and scarcer as you get older (there are obvious exceptions of course - stay-at-home mothers have consistently been a major force in fandoms!). It's possible that audio fiction fans just tend to trend older, and thus don't have the time available to create and consume fan works.
Honestly, I'm not sure how relevant this one is - Audio fiction is becoming more popular with younger audiences and slowly shedding the "old fuddy-duddyness" that surrounded it when I was first getting into the space. And, ya know, there are audio fiction fandoms out there, so obviously either the youth aspect of fandom isn't a thing, or it is, but audio fiction audiences are still trending young anyway.
Theory 4: We're getting what we need!
A lot of academic discourse often focuses on the idea that fandoms create for a reason - and that reason is often to focus on parts of a fiction that the original text, for whatever reason, doesn't. The most obvious form of this is the many, many, many examples of ships and erotic fanfiction. You, as a fan, watch a show, see something between two characters, and get frustrated that the show isn't giving you more of that, won't make what is clearly obvious to you, explicit. So, you consume and/or create fan works that help relieve that tension instead.
Or, in shows where the focus is primarily on plot advancement or action, you feel a desire to get to know the characters better - you see the stirrings of these characters, you want to know them better, but the show just isn't the type of show to give you that slow, character-heavy scene/episode that you know would give you exactly what you need, so, again, you go consume and/or create fan works to fix that.
It's very possible that a lot of audio fiction is already built to give these sorts of fan audiences what they want. There's already romantic relationships, characters are openly queer, the nature of the audio medium means that character-heavy scenes are something that the medium directs creators towards, so there's already a lot of character engagement. So, for many fandoms, there just isn't much need to create fan works - there's no tension between what the show is and what it could be.
Theory 5: We can make our own at home!
One interesting theory is that one reason that people make fandom is because, fundamentally, the creators understand that they're not going to be making a film, or a TV show, or a book. They have creative urges, and they're not in a situation in life where they're likely to overcome the enormous barriers to entry in mainstream media, so, in combination with the stuff in theory 4, they play in other people's worlds instead. They know that there's already an audience who will consume their work (they're part of that fan community, after all!), so they can get that validation of creation without needing to create their own TV show or film or book, etc.
Podcasts, however, are different. Now, it's not true to say that podcasts have low barriers to entry - to create a podcast, there's a lot of skills you either need to learn yourself, or find collaborators with those skills. But, those barriers to entry are much lower than visual media. At the very least, audio production is significantly cheaper and less complicated for an equivalent runtime.
Better, podcasts have absurdly low barriers to publication - There are no gatekeepers to satisfy, no distributors you have to convince. Once your thing is made, pretty much no one can stop you from distributing that work. You don't even really need to pay for a podcast host - there's a few free podcast hosts now. So, once you've done the work, pretty much nothing stops you from publishing said work.
So... If you're a creative fan, who loved a show but thinks you can do better? Well, you can! You don't need to play in other people's spaces, you can be inspired by the podcasts you listen to to create your own original work, in the same medium and genre.

Thinking about Lovelace and Minkowski and the contrast between their closeness and the distance between them. Tough women who led the same station, condemned and hunted by the same villains, who grew to trust each other as colleagues and maybe something like family. Women who can predict each other's choices and know each other's voices as well as they know their own. But there are parts of each other they just can't see. Lovelace will never quite put her finger on the shape of how Minkowski fits herself into the command structure. Why does Minkowski blame herself for not having things under control? The people above her never intended her to have control. Minkowski will always see Lovelace as someone fallen to a place she cannot understand, and in doing so doom herself not to understand her. You were so far gone, Minkowski says, I wanted to know you could come home, but from the moment she stepped onto Minkowski's station, Lovelace was never anything other than a woman, hunted and grieving, right there in front of her. Gone where? And to what home? The orbit of a distant star and the monsters who sent them there shaped both of them into such similar conflagrations, but Lovelace will never understand the ouroboros of shame Minkowski is fighting to rise away from and Minkowski will never understand that Lovelace was never anything further from her than a traumatized, and grieving, person.

eiffel and lovelace "I was reckless and people I cared about got hurt" and the weight of being responsible for other people and the guilt you carry with you. and to cope eiffel shut himself down emotionally and lovelace embarked on her revenge quest and I just. I wish that they both could have heard minkowski's realization at the end of dirty work I think they need to hear someone say "you made a call and people died. I don't know how to fix this. but between all of us, we're gonna figure it out."

Happy belated birthday! Just wanted to hop in again saying I love your posts about Wolf 359. They’re all so good.
I’m on a relisten again and am at the end of season 3. And I’m thinking about how fascinating it is that Hera remembered the Thanksgiving with her at the table physically. And in a post if yours I read recently or you posted recently you talked about Hera getting a human body and I think that scene kinda hints at maybe wanting to be physically there? Idk.
If you’re up for it you can share your thoughts on this. I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday and leave you with some of my Wolf 359 thoughts.

we're absolutely on the same wavelength here, too!! that scene in particular is a big reason why i feel like hera would want a body - what it says about her self-perception, sense of physicality (even without experience to contextualize it), and... as a result, that she experiences physical loneliness. and, notably, that all of those things are subconscious framing in what she misremembers. i've posted about that scene before here, and in my... way too long essay about hera here, which i'll try to paraphrase a bit. and in other places, too, probably! i think about it a lot.
so: i think there's a big difference between existing differently (which can be isolating in itself, but... through lack of understanding) and feeling like she's always being kept away from the others - somewhere else, physically. she clearly conceptualizes herself in that space as within the hephaestus, separate from it and the systems she runs, the same as everyone else. that's the difference between "other people need to change their attitudes" and... well, other people still need to change their attitudes, but there is also something fundamental about her circumstances that she's unhappy with and needs to change.
(and, obviously, like... because you know i see hera as a trans woman, i think some of the parallels you could make to medical transition are pretty clear in that framing, too.)
minkowski says “you weren’t here with us [...] we were over here, and you were over there” but minkowski would never actually say that - from her perspective, hera was as there with them as she's ever been. but if hera doesn't feel that way - if - like the sound design suggests - she's always hearing their voices the way they hear hers... if she's always felt that she's somewhere else... then it's hard for me to imagine there's a way to resolve that without giving her the autonomy to physically interact with the others, to be seen the way she sees herself - and that's something i think is really highlighted in the finale, too.

We don't see it in canon, but I wonder how Hera took the 'Limbo' revelations of Eiffel's backstory. She would have found out the news very shortly after the revelations of 'Memoria', and how does she square Eiffel with being the Pryce in someone else's life? Logically, it would affect her even more personally than it does Minkowski, yet she seems to take it in stride fairly well. Of course, part of it is because Hera knows Eiffel as her best friend and co-conspirator, and their shared bond of being the most unwilling occupants of the Hephaestus, but I think part of it also comes from Hera having spent most of her life being weaponized and experimented on and made into a tool, so her own grasp and understanding of morality is a lot less... black & white than Minkowski's, who's spent most of her life striving for order and discipline, to fit things into neatly defined boxes, and it's a lot harder for her to square the revelation of her longest ally on the Hephaestus being that person.
(Also Hera saying 'you two are adorable' makes me wonder how long she was waiting for Eiffel & Minkowski to reconcile, if she tried to bridge the gap between them during the month or so between the Revelation and the mutiny. Makes me think of Eiffel being caught between Hera & Minkowski in 'The Sound and the Fury', only now Hera's the one caught in the middle, not between two forces of nature but between two stubbornly silent individuals.)

hmm. ■ ☮ ♒ for minkowski? ☮ for eiffel as well, if you want, but maybe those go together.
■ - Bedroom/house/living quarters headcanon - Minkowski's living quarters on the Hephaestus are so neat and minimalist that they appear not to have been lived in. She has reserved one small compartment for personal mementos (photos, letters, show programmes) and she keeps it locked. (I'll put the others below the cut)
☮ - friendship headcanon (of course I was gonna want to combine Minkowski and Eiffel for this, any excuse to ramble about their friendship...) Neither Minkowski nor Eiffel has ever found it easy to make very close friends. Being vulnerable is difficult and terrifying, and neither of them feel sure that they are worthy of that intimacy. Their friendship - its closeness, its importance, its strength - sneaks up on them... Eiffel makes Minkowski laugh and he is surprised at the joy it gives him to hear that sound. He almost dies and Minkowski is surprised to realise that the fear of him dying feels different to how it used to - it feels more personal, more all-consuming. They open up a little and they are each surprised at how natural it feels to know and be known by the other. They each think to themselves that they are so glad that the other one is there with them in this nightmare, and that thought surprises them but then feels obvious. When they make up in Desperate Times, it's the first time they've used the word 'friend' out loud in relation to each other. But they know for certain that it's true, because Eiffel knows how much it hurt when Minkowski wasn't talking to him, and Minkowski knows how much it hurt to not feel able to go to Eiffel for support.
♒ - cooking/food headcanon - Personality-wise, Minkowski is a feeder. She wants to provide people with good food as a way of expressing care - or sometimes as a way of demonstrating her own competency and the importance of an occasion (hence the Hephaestus crew Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners). Unfortunately, she is not naturally a very good cook (even though she follows recipes to the letter). This combination of attributes causes her a great deal of stress.

Alright. At long last, I present to you the bracket...or should I say...*BRACKETS* for the Virtual Character Tournament!

Given the scale, the first round is going to be one bracket per week, 4 a day, with each lasting 24 hours. I know that this is still tight, but given how many contestants there are, along with the necessary inclusions of images and propaganda (oh and I guess also my job), it's what I can do to keep this semi-manageable. I do think the SI 5 genuinely cared about each other and all of them saw the group as family, just Kepler and Jacobi saw that in very different ways and so when Maxwell died it fell apart.
Kepler's loyalty is almost wholly to Goddard, specifically to this ideal of progress, of a bigger picture, that he has given everything for. He cares for Maxwell and Jacobi as an extension of that ideal first and foremost, and as the closest thing he has to family after that fact.
The company's interests come before theirs, just they so often align or at least coexist that it doesn't matter, there's no need to draw that distinction. Kepler has faith in Goddard and puts it before Jacobi and Maxwell, and expects them to do the same.
But Jacobi's loyalty is to the group, his family, and where to Kepler SI-5 is important by extension of Goddard's importance to him, Goddard and progress is important to Jacobi by merit of that being their group's goal. He is on the ground, fighting not for the idea of the flag he wears, but those soldiers beside him in the battle. If Kepler and Maxwell decided Goddard didn't matter one day, then it wouldn't matter to Jacobi anymore either. He cares about Goddard only because they care about Goddard, because he sees direct cause and effect of "people like him doing their jobs, so that people like Maxwell can do their jobs."
Kepler sees the big picture from above, and Jacobi is level with that image and sees only what's near him and the distant horizon. Jacobi understands on some level that him and Kepler never saw eye to eye on this, but never wanted to push and really see how Kepler thought of them. It was never a need to know for him, until Maxwell died and suddenly it was.
TLDR: Kepler cares about the SI-5 as an extension of Goddard's goals, and Jacobi cared about Goddard as an extension of the SI-5's goals. Maxwell's death was the first time that there was an important distinction between those two, and so Jacobi betrayed/abandoned Kepler.

Okay it's time for another wolf 359 meta post but hopefully this one will be relatively short. I've been thinking about Maxwell lately -- specifically, why she died instead of Jacobi. There's a few reasons that come to mind:
First, it's the only way the narrative would work as written. Having a linguistic expert and an AI expert on board would have dramatically changed the way they communicated with the Dear Listeners, and it would have dramatically changed the events of the finale. Maxwell and Pryce are probably on similar levels, technologically speaking, and she may have been able to take back control from her. Plus, Jacobi's role of getting beat to shit is probably not something Maxwell would sign up for so willingly. She's not nearly as dependent on brute force as he is, and would most likely want to find another alternative. So TLDR; she had to die for the plot to go the way the creators wanted it to.
Second, I think it gives Minkowski's action (killing her) more weight because it's Maxwell. At this point, she was much more sympathetic and likeable than Jacobi was. She had basically saved Hera's life. Although we are still aware that she's a villain -- she does take away Hera's autonomy that same episode to put down the og crew's rebellion -- there's a lot of nuance there, more so than Jacobi. So the fact that Minkowski killed her is an act that is less justifiable and much more severe than just killing Jacobi. It's contrasted with the SI-5 killing Hilbert, who is the "worst" of the main crew. I think that's designed to show that the death of Hilbert and the death of Maxwell are on the exact same level, morally speaking. Neither is more justified than the other. Wolf 359 is very clear about its disapproval of capital punishment, and this moment is no exception. By having Minkowski kill the more sympathetic of the SI-5 members, they're emphasizing the fact that she was not in the right. It's a moment where her morals falter because of her anger and grief, and though understandable it is not justified.
I want to say that I'm not trying to demonize Minkowski here. Her reaction was understandable: she was angry, and shocked, and in a panic over how to keep her people safe. She needed Kepler to take her seriously in that moment, and the way she thought to do that was by shooting Maxwell. I do also think it was probably in part for revenge, after he killed Hilbert, but mostly not. It was an impossible situation to be in and I don't blame her for what she did, but that doesn't mean what she did was right. It's another example of how Wolf 359 addresses complicated moral questions, and remains adamant about its basic answers. The "good" guys do not get a free pass to always be in the moral right just because they're the protagonists. Everyone is treated the same in that way.
Crucially, this is a different situation from when Minkowski kills Cutter. In that case, it was done primarily to prevent him from harming other people. Though it isn't good he had to die, it was necessary to stop him from basically destroying humanity, so Minkowski shooting him was justified. Morals in Wolf 359 are typically about trying to help the people around you, trying to make things better in the situation you're in. At that point, the best way to help people and make things better was to kill Cutter. So she did (and it was rad as hell). With Maxwell this wasn't the case, not really. Maxwell wasn't planning to destroy humanity. She might not have continued to hurt people. She could have helped them, maybe. Minkowski killed her because she needed to get her way in that moment (again, understandable). Therefore it is not justified

My Live Reaction to Episode 1:
At first, an ad played for a way more upbeat story podcast involving Greek gods, rainbow magic, and teenagers, and I was very confused because none of this was mentioned in any of your posts.
Yes, yes, Eiffel. Hera forgets what's necessary to sustain human life and accidently made the cabin too cold, hahahaha...foreshadowing.
"Whatever you're up to Dr. Hilbert, best of luck!" Dude is your whole job ominous foreshadowing? Sorry guys, I get half the characters from your posts confused, I just know that Hera is the AI, but Eiffel dude, there's no way Hilbert's not up to something.
"It's not like if she let me have a cigarette, I'd light it and set the station's air supply on fire" Bro, stop.
"The people on the station have serious trust issues." I mean, fair. You knocked over acid, you're lighting cigarette willy-nilly, I still don't know what your job is man.
"Let's see if we can actually get some work done." -Well I know I'm not.
Ooohh... they're looking for intelligent life! 👀 This sounds like a good plot.

1,001 survival tips? That's actually a pretty low amount for space. These tips are also some wonderful foreshadowing though, and very cheerful too. "Failing to remain calm could result in your ✨😍 grisly 🌈💖gruesome🍭 🦋death🥰!" I love that.

"A man's life is at risk". Are we sure it's just one man's life?
Okay Douglas. That's his first name.
Wait...is that....the Entertainer? Is the alien transmitting the Entertainer? Something about old timey music...I think that's also the song they play in Westfield after a massacre in the old west (I stopped watching after a while).
Well that was a musical transition. Oh wow the same guy did Douglas and Hilbert? Good voice acting. Yes it was the Entertainer! Alright not sure if the episodes have post credit scenes, but I might just skip to the next episode.
My thoughts on Episodes 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 (semi-live reaction because I'm listening to these while I'm working now, but it's really good. Let me know if you want me to split up by episodes or include time stamps in the future):
Okay. They can't shut Hera off. That seems ominous. I'm not sure if it's ominous because the time will come when they want to shut her off, or ominous because the time will come when a bad guy finally figures out how to shut her off. Either way not good.
This also seems like a lot of effort for toothpaste. How did Douglas get hired? He seems like a huge liability. Also, why are they running out of supplies? Shouldn't they have a ship coming to restock them at some point or a return date? They mention "Earth", but so far I don't think anyone has mention loved ones they left behind, a return date, or anything like that.
I like the captain though (I can't spell her name, I'm so sorry).
Why does Douglas (and apparently everyone) hate physical examinations? They're in space. It's not like they can force them to run a mile...right?
I love Hera. "The report was a fabrication! 🥰". "You place too much judgement on the concept of lies... it's only sticks and stones that can break a human's feeble delicate flesh." I love how everyone just accepts this is how she talks.
Big plant? Roots? What is this Little Shop of Horrors now?
Um... what on earth is this physical examination? Why is there so much pain? Why can't it be stopped once it starts? Is this a meta thing where this is the physical examination?
Nah, the one thing I agree with Douglas on is that Hilbert is up to stuff.
Okay. Don't like it. Don't like the plant. It's either a crisis or a lie that's going to eventually be a very appropriate metaphor.
Oh my gosh why does Hilbert want their spinal fluid? Like...why do they need to do this? I get that they're in space but normalize providing reasons for serious medical examinations.
Kill it? What if it's not hostile? But then again what if it is? How does it have an eye? Teeth? Oh never mind it is hostile.
Oh it's still on the loose...Douglas what the heck. A good day? A plant wants to kill you. Have you seen the musical?
...wait. Is that a theme? First the Entertainer plays, now we got Little Shop of Horrors references...is this a theme of season 1? Space musicals?
And...now Douglas is in space. What happened to the plant? Why is that not a priority?
I do love the commander's "No Tomfoolery" clause.
Hey! More music! 🎶It sounds faster and more urgent now. You can probably use music to send coded information. A shame there seems to be no codebreaker on board.
I wonder if Hera understands what it means.
Oh dear. Here goes Douglas. Well, he was a nice character while he lasted. 🫡 And by nice, I mean he was entertaining, but very underqualified for his position. Scarily underqualified in fact, in terms of his ability to cooperate and work with a team. How did he even get this job?
He was blinded by the flare? So is he blind the rest of the show or can they fix it?
Oh dear...Hera...drown in space? Of all the ways to go. And still nothing about that killer plant. Did I listen out of order or something? I feel like I might have.
I like the Commander. Hilbert on the other hand? The worst.
I'm also wondering when/if other characters show up. Are there really just four characters? I swear I saw people posting about more.
I still want to know why they are in space. If this is a research mission, then why isn't anyone giving them supplies? Why don't they have a return date? If it's a survival mission, why aren't they acting more urgent?
Also does...does Douglas or another character nearly die at the end of every episode?
Hera: "Because I missed you."
Also Hera: "I lie 🥰"
And...more ominously cheerful piano music🎶🎹🎵🎹🎶. Which honestly fits Hera's aesthetic pretty well.

Also. While he deals with his illness, I just gotta add something I noticed: the AI on the ship is called Hera. The ship is called Hephaestus. Isn't... isn't there a Greek Myth about Hephaestus being the son of Hera that she rejects and throws off Mount Olympus? Don't like how that sounds...
Hilbert. Hilbert. Why have you tied him to the bed and left him with nothing but his nicotine? That sounds like a major consent and health code violation. He's not violent or at risk of hurting anyone! Well, I mean, at least not any more than he normally is.
Huh. Hera's not here. And yet she said she couldn't be shut off "even if they wanted to". Weird.
Well at least Hilbert is feeding him. Oh my gosh Douglas is fake taking the pills? I'm not saying taking them is a good idea, but not taking them isn't great either. Why do they have this one guy doing all science stuff? Like he's the medical doctor, but he's also the guy running all the technology and experiments. They couldn't have a different guy to be their medical doctor? Maybe someone slightly less crazy?
Hilbert. Once again, he might trust you more if you didn't tie him to a bed, drug him in his sleep, and say things like "some people need to be dragged kicking and screaming towards improvement".
Yeah what on earth does "Big Day Tomorrow" mean? I'm not sure, but once again does Douglas nearly die during most episodes?
Also tying someone to a bed with a killer plant on the loose seems like a pretty bad idea.
WHY DO THEY HAVE TROPICAL FLU ON BOARD?
What sort of ship is this? And why do I feel like Hilbert might be a supervillain?
500th day around Wolf395 you say Douglas? Okay, so they've been in space for about a year and a half. Still not sure what they're doing up there. Also Hera's "I don't know what I want, but I know how to get it" quote. Very ominous coming from an AI.
I don't like the way Hilbert talks to Hera. Apparently Hera doesn't either...oh dear.

I suppose we'll find out. Oh that is not a solid explanation from Hera. And again, why are Douglas, Minkowski and Hilbert the only people on the ship? Don't they need anyone else? And what happened to the killer plant? Did I skip an episode? Are we suppose to just pretend that never happened? Is it gonna come back later? Find out I guess.
Anyway, great podcast, thank you for recommending, I had fun listening. I might do more of these later if you enjoyed this.

The timeline gets slippy and things start getting weird. Lovelace won’t let a little thing like temporal causality hurt her crew though.

Means he found a way to hear her prophecies and believe them, so she cuts a deal—she gets him home in 3 months rather than 10 years on the promise that if she does so he’ll adopt her as a legitimate daughter and princess of Ithaca. Very meta. In the format of a classic Sophoclean or Euripidean play.
