Sh2-308: A Dolphin Shaped Star Bubble

Wolf-Rayet stars in general have over 20 times the mass of our Sun and expel fast particle winds that can create iconic looking nebulas. In this case, the resulting star bubble spans over 60 light years, is about 70,000 years old, and happens to look like the head of a dolphin. Named Sh2-308 and dubbed the Dolphin-Head Nebula, the gas ball lies about 5,000 light years away and covers as much sky as the full moon -- although it is much dimmer.

Today’s rec comes from the beautiful, yet painful world of my rarepair collection. Because I am a glutton for punishment, I ‘enjoy’ latching on to ships with less than 100 fics to their name on Ao3. Every time is the last time, I swear to myself. But then I find another one.

This once specifically is Jacob/Max from the movie Welcome to the Punch - played by Mark Strong and James McAvoy, respectively. If you’ve seen the movie then you know. The chemistry is BANGING, their looks are FIRE. And you just know that the hatefucking would be Off. The. Chain.

But this fic is a bit sweeter than your typical Jacob/Max fic (as typical as you can get in a ship with less than 50 fics?). A bit gentler. A nice little Soulmates AU. Well, slightly AU, that is. It’s implied that canon stuff still happened, but with the added bonus angst factor of them being soulmates on top of everything else. It’s short but sweet. The characterization is on point. The smut is hnnnnnnnng perfect. And there’s a nice little bit of hurt/comfort at the end. A truly great recipe for a stellar story. The real danger of a fic this good is that it makes me want to sit down and watch Welcome to the Punch again. And nobody should have to subject themselves to that movie more than once, lol.

Dust Shells around WR 140 from Webb

What are those strange rings? Rich in dust, the rings are likely 3D shells -- but how they were created remains a topic of research. Where they were created is well known: in a binary star system that lies about 6,000 light years away toward the constellation of the Swan (Cygnus) -- a system dominated by the Wolf-Rayet star WR 140. Wolf-Rayet stars are massive, bright, and known for their tumultuous winds. They are also known for creating and dispersing heavy elements such as carbon which is a building block of interstellar dust. The other star in the binary is also bright and massive -- but not as active. The two great stars joust in an oblong orbit as they approach each other about every eight years. When at closest approach, the X-ray emission from the system increases, as, apparently, does the dust expelled into space -- creating another shell. The featured infrared image by the new Webb Space Telescope resolves greater details and more dust shells than ever before.
