Menelaus rambles a lot about not only Helen, but also Hermione. About how she used to say Olive like "Olifs". How she lost her first tooth running too fast and running into a low branch while out with Helen. How he'd sometimes wake up to Hermione leaning over him and poking his face to say, "Dad, can we go see the horses?" even though it was barely daylight. How she was much nicer waking Helen and how he thinks Hermione did that on purpose because she found "dad's face funny". How her favorite color was every color.
And Odysseus listens.
And he thinks about how his son only had a few teeth coming in when he left, teething on everything. How he could only say one syllable with his babbles. How his son needed balance to stand but Odysseus was so proud that Telemachus was very good at rolling over. How his son loved pulling at his and Penelope's hair.
How his son would be talking, walking, maybe even lost his first tooth by now. And he doesn't even know if he'll ever know his son's favorite color.

The sheer pity party some alloromantics expect of aromantics is really funny to me. The expectation is that we ought to feel broken or afraid that we will never be worthy of anything if not for a romantic relationship, but as the years go on, I've been so much less inclined to feel those ways.
People expect aromanticism to feel like a prison, and I think that's looking at it wrong. My aromanticism never imprisoned me - amatonormativity did. Being aromantic taught me that I can never and will never be "made whole" through romantic attraction. Amatonormativity teaches that to be whole is to be pursued, to be in love, to be possessed, essentially. Being aromantic has freed me of those expectations because I had to break those chains in order to truly understand what will make my life worth living.
I've been finding more and more that being allo will never appeal to me - I don't give a flying fuck about allo being "normal," and frankly if being normal means being allo, I simply just won't be normal.

i was doing my regular rewatch the other day and tbh... lonnie and will's relationship is so unsettling. lonnie literally did not give a single goddamn fuck that his own twelve year old son was missing and later "dead". he just... did not fucking care! at all. couldn't even pretend to. jonathan comes to tell him what happened and we see that...
lonnie got joyce's call and still didn't care to reach out,
when jonathan tells him this is serious and real, he mocks will by saying "he was never very good at taking care of himself" (which is already disturbing considering this is his son he's talking about, but especially so when you remember that lonnie abused will for being gay and tried to get him to like "masculine" things),
he's already talking to jonathan about seeing him more and reconnecting, like will isn't fucking missing, like he's already fucking dead and he's moved on, as if will is some stranger or worse someone that never existed at all,
instead of feeling any kind of shame about jonathan not believing him when he says will isn't there and him looking in the actual fucking trunk of his car, he just makes a joke out of it asking if jonathan's gonna check up his ass too,
his neglect is brought up again when jonathan slams one of the posters to his chest and tells him "in case you forgot what he looks like",
and that's not even touching on the fact that the very first thing we see lonnie do when jonathan enters the house is fucking shove and pin him to the wall, telling him "you got stronger".
like, he is not a good man in the slightest—the complete antithesis of the byers we know.
and then afterward... lonnie finally decides to come back. he's being nice to joyce and pretending like he's the man of the house again. like he's finally come home to fix and save his family.
he goes to will's funeral and treats it like a schmoozing event, like that isn't his youngest son being buried right in front of him, showing less emotion than one of will's classmates that hasn't ever even talked to him.
but... he's not there because he's had a sudden change of heart.
no, he's there because he has something to gain out of this unimaginable tragedy. his own youngest son is dead and he comes back home to collect a fucking check for it. because he's never cared about will, hasn't ever even seen him as a human being, he just... sees his death as something he can benefit from.
it's just so fucked up and so sinister. lonnie isn't a man riddled with vices, beholden to some disease which makes him act in ways most unbecoming. no, he's... just a man. a small, manipulative, and cruel leech of a man that just doesn't fucking care and is in it only for himself.
it's just... it's really tragic to think that will really was dealing with monsters way before that first demogorgon ever came through the gate.
and even then... that demogorgon was an animal acting as animals do / possessed by vecna and you can't really blame it for that. but what's lonnie's excuse, huh?

I totally get gendered petnames like dude, sis, bro, and whatever else, and I get why some people might be confused as to why some trans people might take issue with a petname you might think is neutral. However, I do want people to remember that trans people often have different relationships with those petnames because they're gendered, and they might be uncomfortable with those connotations. A trans woman who doesn't want you to call her "dude" is probably not doing it to anger or accuse you of anything, but she might just have a negative relationship with that word.
I get that it can be hard to change habits, but it is worth it to include trans people. If a trans person in your life asks you not to use certain words, I promise they aren't trying to fuck you over or make you feel like you're under attack. They are just expressing a boundary - one that cis people also express.

Hi, ive just started writing fanfic for the first time, do you have any tips?
honestly, just writing what makes you happy because who gives a fuck what other people think! if YOU like it, that's all that matters.
also don't be afraid to experiment with sentence structure, etc! rules are made to be broken and i am a staunch believer that breaking grammar rules (intentionally...not just having bad grammar lol) adds so much character to your writing and really gives you your own voice and style. I do it all the time! i love me a good intentional run-on sentence, some comma splices (i am a slut for comma splices i cannot lie to you), some fragments, starting sentences with a conjunction. etc etc etc.
also if you're having trouble getting a feel for your Style or whatever, it's okay to take inspiration from the style of some authors you enjoy (that obviously does NOT mean to copy their work, but look at their sentence structure, at how they piece their puzzle together; my new current sentence structure experiment is based on the way one of my friends wrote a fic, and i'm loving it.)
oh i know people preach active over passive voice, but i am telling you now that passive voice can be used and it adds to your writing sometimes! ESPECIALLY if you're trying to set a more serious, sort of prose-like tone....passive voice my beloved. some of the craziest lines i've written are passive.
use adjectives but dont OVER use them--and if you are overusing them, make sure it's intentional. (intentionality is literally the main thing; if you do something intentionally, it's probably going to come across like that, and your readers are going to understand it the way you wanted them to)
similar to the passive vs. active debate...showing vs. telling. it's a bit tricky to find a good balance sometimes, but you'll learn. but also, it's not as black and white as a lot of people make it seem. "showing" the way i see most people use it is just excessive use of adjectives and verbs, while telling is simply stating something (which i don't necessarily agree with)
Im going to use an example from the fic i'm writing right now:
And so he goes to them, like a ship to a beacon of light, a sailor to a siren. He goes because he cannot possibly stay away for a moment longer, cannot bear to not have them in his arms. He lies beside her and she relaxes into him, and it is too much, this love. Too much for one man to feel, too much for him to hold back. It thrums through his veins, begging to be released.
I would argue that most, if not all of that paragraph is me telling, not showing. "he goes to them" "he goes because" "he lies" "it is too much" etc etc. i use metaphors and whatnot, but i'm telling nonetheless. (there's another good point, actually: most of this is me telling, but it's also active voice, so they balance each other)
anyway enough of my babbling about grammar lol. just have fun and write whatever makes you happy--and don't feel like it has to be perfect, or like you're obligated to churn out content, because you're not. one of my favorite fics of mine EVER has been rotting in google docs hell since christmas 2022; what matters is that EYE love her and am with her in spirit, not that she's done and produced and perfect.
