Jojo Rabbit Plot Summary and Historical Background Information
Plot summary:
Jojo Rabbit is an American film directed by Taika Waititi and was released in 2019. The plot of the story is set during the collapse of Nazi Germany, in the fictional city of Falkenheim, young Johannes “Jojo” Bletzer joins the junior section of the Hitler Youth (Deutsches Jungvolk) with his friend Yorki. He is heavily brainwashed by the Nazi ideals and has an imaginary friend named Adolf, a satirical caricature of Adolf Hitler.
One day that Jojo was home alone he discovers Elsa Korr, a Jewish girl who was his late sister Inge’s classmate, hiding in the walls of Inge’s room. Jojo is inspired by a rant by Klenzendorf to create a picture book titled Yoohoo Jew so he can expose Jewish people and can help the public recognize them by talking with Elsa to learn her “Jew Secrets”. He finds himself struggling with his innocence and brainwashing, eventually beginning a friendship with her. Due to the events that follow, Jojo’s beliefs completely turn and he realizes all that is wrong with the regime.
Following Hitler’s death, The Allied forces begin an offensive attack on Falkenhein and Jojo hides until the allies win. Since he is wearing his Hitler Youth uniform, the Russians capture him and Klenzendorf, who tears off Jojo’s uniform and calls him a Jew so the soldiers don’t harm him. Jojo returns home and an angry Adolf confronts him for sympathizing with Elsa, so Jojo kicks him out of a window and gets rid of his imaginary friend. Elsa sees the American soldiers and slaps Jojo for lying to her about the Germans winning. Then, knowing they are free and have no idea what the future will be, they dance.

Historical Background Information:
As many people know, through the 1930s and during WWII Germany, under the leadership of fascist dictator Adolf Hitler persecuted and murdered several minority groups such as people with disabilities, Roma people, LGBTQ+ people, and most famously Jewish people (of course this list doesn’t cover the amount of people that were persecuted, imprisoned, and murdered by the Nazis).
Society in Nazi Germany was fueled by propaganda from the party which dominated all types of media imaginable. Children were indoctrinated through Hitler Youth camps or DJ (in which Jojo finds himself in) where they partook in activities like outdoor activities, sports, parades, and (as shown in the film) burning books. These camps were not required at first, but by 1939 they were compulsory for boys ages 10-18 and were seen as pre-military training. Since Jojo disqualifies himself for the pre-military training he does the other tasks of the DJ which is collecting recyclables and scrap metal, acting as messengers, and distributing propaganda. In the final years of the war the boys acted as an unpaid part-time militia.
Jojo Rabbit & Cinematography
Color and texture are the cinematographic aspects of Jojo Rabbit that are primarily responsible for subverting the tonal expectations of a movie regarding this time period, but also plays into the satirical nature of the movie. Since the movie is told through the perspective of Jojo (a child) the colors are bright and vibrant, but as the film grows darker and Jojo matures the colors do as well. This is also expanded upon through the costuming and overall design aspects of the film, which also play into the color palette of the movie. The editing and shot lengths within the movie are also meant to be a reflection of Jojo’s perspective and emotions, especially in crucial moments like when he meets Elsa. Shorter shots are representative of his fear and panic, while longer shots are used to build suspense in a way that is reminiscent of a horror movie. Overall, the cinematography of Jojo Rabbit creates a satirical deception of German society in WWII that plays into the grimness of the situation as the movie and main character progress.

As usual things have gotten out of hand with my new special interest bc how the fuck did I watch Jojo Rabbit and somehow decide that Jojo was now a silly little boy w 2 dads (and a brief emo arc), Elsa his older sister who gets dragged into his bs bc she’s the only one who would let him do it, Yorki a gamer with a minecraft yt channel, Captain K somehow even MORE cynical and depressed, and Finkel a mysterious twink who likes joy division & new order and also has a dark past w MCR like did I not understand the point of the movie at all or????
