Macau Theerapanyakul - a character study

here is my bid to become known as Macau trash no.1 on this hellsite

What’s it like, being the youngest in a family of rich, powerful mafia men?

Macau Theerapanyakul is a high school aged child (yes, child), somewhere around the age of 17/18 (15 according to a random comment I saw on Youtube) and the second son of Gun Theerapanyakul, the head of the minor family. He goes to a fancy international school.

These are the facts known to us.

But what about his personality? His motivations, his ambitions, his relations to the people around him?

In his character study, Ta explains that Macau is always second to everything, really average and nothing stands out about him. He feels as though he is unloved and neglected by his dad whilst his older brother Vegas is the only one he can talk to and seek advice from. He describes Macau as someone immature, attention-seeking and spoilt. A boy who speaks his mind and does as he wants.

Let’s start at the beginning, or rather the end, because that’s where Macau stands. Both in terms of power and in age. He is too young to bear any responsibility in the adult world of his family business but yet not young enough to be completely out of the know. So how is he meant to live in these circumstances and expect nothing - to pretend his family doesn’t have blood on their hands, doesn’t kill for a living and doesn’t live under the dominant ring finger of his extended family/the major family. He is suspended in a state of stasis where he cannot ignore who he is but at the same time he must question who he is because he cannot decide for himself and yet the ones who can, will not.

Macau is first presented to us as an antagonistic little brat in Ep 2, but all the other times we’ve seen him in later episodes he appears nothing like that brat. He appears to be simply a child, playful and mischievious rather than angry and threatening. So why? Why was this our first impression of Macau?

The context of our first meeting with Macau in Ep 2 is that his father and brother are in a meeting with Korn and Kinn. A meeting he isn’t there for, or more likely isn’t allowed to be there for. Gun thinks Macau is of no importance, he already has Vegas, his capable heir. Vegas does not want to push his brother into their world so early, he wants him to have at least a chance at a childhood, one that Vegas likely never got. Either way, no one has bothered to ask Macau what he wants and he is simply pushed aside and left to his own devices. So, with his simmering resentment at already being left out of the important meetings, in comes a random bodyguard, Macau takes one look at him, sees the uniform and pin of the major family bodyguards, and decides not to waste his time on someone who serves the family he belives is the root cause of his father’s neglect of him (as Ta explains in his character story). But then this bodyguard decides to step out of his boundaries and push him, asking where his parents are (Macau hates his father, and his mother is dead) and if he was the maid’s son (a further insult to his already fragile ego and understanding of where he stands in the Theerapanyakul hierarchy that even a bodyguard can talk down to him). Macau does ask to be left alone but Porsche ignores him and continues to egg him on, so his reaction seems fairly excusable leading to him falling into the pond and running to tattle-tale on his dad.

But what’s interesting here is that Macau cries out for his dad but Gun does not comfort him. He turns away and begins to scold Korn and Kinn. Even when Porsche says he thought Macau was a maid’s son, Macau once again whines to Gun, and yet Gun doesn’t do anything. He doesn’t reassure or defend Macau that he is in fact his son, a Theerapanyakul. Instead, it is actaully the minor family bodyguard that reacts to defend Macau by pulling out his gun on Porsche. After Kinn chokes Porsche, Gun and Vegas glare at Kinn whilst Macau’s gaze remains on Porsche. But he doesn’t look satisfied or angry, instead he looks shocked and guilty. Almost like he didn’t expect this, he didn’t want this. Macau just wanted his father to comfort him, to be seen by his dad and to be taken care of. But instead, he just watches everyone around him respond with violence so he can’t help but mirror their actions when he walks past Porsche and kicks him.
