FEATURE: Leading Ladies: UPIS Women Student Leaders’ Journey
To wrap up International Women's Month, now would be an opportune time to shine a spotlight on our young female student leaders at the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) who are making their mark by overcoming obstacles and inspiring others to dream big and reach for the stars. Join us as we delve into the stories, experiences, and aspirations of these remarkable young leaders who bring light to our everyday lives at school.
Established in March 1987, International Women's Month has been a beacon of inclusivity and empowerment, advocating for gender equality and celebrating the achievements of women worldwide every March. In the Philippines, former President Corazon Aquino declared the occasion to be a month-long celebration in Proclamation No. 224. 1988 She also declared the eighth of March a special non-working holiday under the Republic Act No. 6949 s. 1990. This effort not only raises awareness but also promotes active engagement in gender equality and appreciating their unique contributions to society.
The spirit of Women's Month remains at UPIS through various initiatives emphasizing the importance of gender equality and the celebration of women's achievements, such as a freedom wall created by the Media Center 2024. It encouraged students to write about their thoughts on women's empowerment, experiences, and female figures who have inspired them in their everyday lives. In addition to this, the Media Center also handed out purple ribbons to students, teachers, and staff to wear in honor of International Women's Day. Lastly, the Pamunuan ng Kamag-Aral (PKA) organized a tote bag-making contest called 'BAGisbis', in which students from Grades 7-11 showcased their creativity while participating in the celebration. And as the community continues to celebrate each woman's diversity and uniqueness in UPIS, this includes its student leaders, whose efforts have inspired others to strive for excellence in all aspects of life.
Mikhaella Christina Mercurio
Tumblr media
Mikhaella Christina Mercurio is a Grade 7 student leader from the Freshman Association. Her leadership journey began in K-2, where her classmates recognized her potential and elected her to various leadership positions. This early honor encouraged her passion and commitment to serving her peers and school community.
“Inspirations ko po is si Mommy ko and si Leni Robredo [My inspirations are my Mommy and Leni Robredo].” Mikhaella shared. Her mother's work ethic and Leni Robredo's groundbreaking impact on society encouraged her to be driven and creative and make a positive change in the Philippines.
But as a student leader, Mikhaella can’t deny that there are some challenges she encounters in her daily life as she fulfills her responsibilities at UPIS. She faces hurdles such as time management and maintaining professionalism. Balancing these aspects can be demanding, yet Mikhaella remains determined in her commitment. Mikhaella’s warm and friendly energy, together with her genuine desire to connect with everyone promotes an inclusive environment where everyone feels seen and valued.
[This is where I am able to express and share my creativity…]” Mikhaella’s leadership roles provide a platform to showcase her creative ideas and build meaningful relationships with her peers and even their parents. While she embraces these opportunities, Mikhaella acknowledges the challenges of being a female leader; some may underestimate her capabilities, but Mikhaella always steps forward and rises above these perceptions, proving herself through her actions and dedication.
As we celebrate Women’s Month, Mikhaella shares a message to other young women who aspire to become student leaders: “Young women who aspire to be student leaders should never let anyone bring them down. Don’t be afraid to show the world the things you can do and always do your best. You must enjoy every step of the process and remember who you're doing it for.”
Chiomi Sophia Eisma
Tumblr media
The Sophomore Association’s Treasurer Chiomi Sophia Eisma described her journey as a leader to be a rollercoaster ride because of the difficulties and problems she has to face. After all, she has to participate in the balancing act between student life, leading, and being a child, while aiming to break through the stereotypes about women being leaders that she finds in her surroundings.
“For me, there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages to being a leader. One of the advantages would be learning new experiences, but the disadvantages, marami din po. May kaya itong gawin [... there are many too. For us Filipinos, if the leader is a man, they think that men are “higher beings”. However, if the leader is a woman, people doubt her, because 'What can she do?' compared to men, who ‘can do something.’]”
“It inspired me, seeing how I could make a difference in our batch, especially from all the problems we were facing, and seeing that I could be aware of the things I can and can't do as a person. I can make a change while inspiring people that surround me, and they’re giving me their full support in return,” said Chiomi.
For her message to young girls who, just like her, aspire to become good leaders, she shares that they should always believe in their unique and capable selves, and to surround themselves with people who will fully support them. “Do not think [about] what other people will say about you, whether negatively or positively, because we are all uniquely made to be ourselves to do the things we are capable of. Always surround yourselves with people that are willing to give their full support towards us.”
Indah Hannah Wadi
Tumblr media
Junior Association’s President Hannah Indah Wadi recalls her exciting beginnings as a student leader back in K-2 as the president of her class. This early experience ignited her passion to continue her journey, leading her to take on various roles in elementary, including becoming a homeroom officer.
“I’d say it would be my parents who inspired me the most, they give me the courage to lead a bunch of people.” Hannah happily shared. However, navigating the path of her leadership also came with challenges, such as the need to completely find and understand herself to effectively help others. Some have also found her intimidating due to her role as a student leader. Despite this, Hannah’s passion and dedication earned her respect and admiration.
Hannah emphasizes the importance of providing a safe space for all students, particularly women student leaders who play a significant role in setting a positive change within the school community. She hopes that this compassionate environment will continue to grow in order to empower more students to take on leadership roles fearlessly.
To wrap everything up, Hannah shared a few inspiring words for aspiring women leaders who want to take the same path as her. “It’s normal to have those days where you just don’t feel like yourself and you feel burned out and tired; that’s really normal. After overcoming that, that’s when you realize that other side of yourself. Those bad days are needed for you to see the happy days and the happy side of you! So definitely, if you think that you have the heart, or if you want to try it out, you should go for it because it really teaches you a lot, and you learn a lot about yourself.”
Justice Christian Aguinaldo
Tumblr media
When the President of this year's PKA Justice Christian Aguinaldo was younger, she had a childhood dream to become the president of the Philippines— although she states that it was just in the past.
“When I was in Grade 3, there was a teacher who encouraged me to run for Pamunuan Ng Kamag-Aral, and at first I was scared because I didn't know everybody. I had to gain votes, and I didn't know how to do that, but my teacher taught me to be part of a party list that welcomed me and helped me run.”
This encouragement would be the catalyst for a years-long journey to lead Batch 2026, and later the PKA here in UPIS. It helped her to understand how the guidance of adults around her would affect how she could learn to lead, because only through the grown-ups could children learn to handle complicated things, like legal or financial issues in an organization.
As a female student leader, she says that she has never experienced anything undesirable from the school itself just because of her gender. She points out that the leadership roles here have never placed emphasis on who can and cannot lead, and that not only are the ratios between female student leaders and male student leaders almost equal, but they are more dominated by female students sometimes! However, she does recall an experience when a younger student assumed she was a man, and it made her wonder if it was because of her name, appearance at the time, or if the student had just assumed that she had to be a man because of the leadership role she had taken on. If so, she hopes that the school can continue to educate and promote inclusivity to its younger students, so that they would not adhere to stereotypes about leadership.
As a final message to the readers, Justice urges people to take the plunge towards leadership if they want to. “Just go for it. Run for the position, kung mayroon ka talaga ng pagmamahal sa pamumuno at paglilingkod sa kapwa mo. I hope na magkaroon din sila ng person that will encourage them to run. [Run for the position, if you really have love for leading and serving your fellows. I hope that they will also have a person that will encourage them to run.]”
Alexandra Sophia “Alex” Blasi
Tumblr media
For Alexandra Sophia Blasi, what pushed her to be a student leader at a younger age was the lack of guidance and leaders in her batch when they were in elementary. “I wanted to step up. I already had roles pagdating sa homeroom, so I felt that I could escalate to a bigger platform, for PKA, pero for my first year na tumakbo ako, hindi ako nanalo, pero I decided to try again [for the following elections], and nanalo ako for that term and the next year, back in elementary. [I already handled roles in my homeroom, so I felt like I could escalate to a bigger platform, for PKA, but in the first year that I ran, I didn't win. But I tried again next year, and I won for my next two terms back in elementary.]” When the student organizations returned in UPIS during the pandemic, she decided to run and got elected as the vice president. A year after, as a Grade 10 student, she became the president of last year's PKA.
When she was new to leading, she found it hard to establish her authority among her peers, especially because they were still young children at the time, and on different occasions had struggled with communicating and reinforcing the school rules to her classmates. Since the school consists mostly of females and female leaders, she felt that she could share her own thoughts and feelings freely, and she learned to be empathetic towards what other people feel. While Alexandra rarely faced inquiries about leading as a young woman, she proudly says that this sentiment was only more prevalent in elementary school, and that the school has mostly been supportive and empowering towards her and fellow girls.
“At present, very supportive naman ang community dito. It would generally be better kung magiging participative yung mga students, lalo na sa mga events. [At present the community here is very supportive. It would generally be better if the students were more participative, especially in events.]” She hopes that aspiring student leaders would participate as much as possible in school events, and to be proactive in the advocacies that are present around them.
“Don't be afraid to take on leadership roles no matter what people say. Don't let them invalidate what you feel, because if you feel that spark, then you should go for it. Marami ang naniniwala at sumusuporta sa iyo [a lot of people will believe and support you,]” Alexandra says.
Rachelle Nicole Torralba
Tumblr media
Lastly, Rachelle Nicole Torralba is the current Editor-in-Chief of ‘Ang Aninag Online’, under the Media Center 2024 and a representative of the Social Sciences and Humanities Track. She is also a former Year-Level Organization (YLO) officer of the Sophomore Association (SOA), Junior Association, and Senior Council.
Rachelle’s journey into student leadership started back in elementary when she actively participated in various clubs and student councils, which eventually blossomed into something greater when she transferred to UPIS. “It is definitely challenging to manage my time for academics and leadership tasks but it is bearable with the help of my co-leaders and members especially in Media Center as they are all very reliable and hardworking.” Rachelle shared. Despite the difficulties, she remains certain that every effort, no matter how tiny, contributes to a meaningful change.
However, Rachelle believes there's always room for improvement. She suggests that UPIS can further empower its women leaders by providing them more opportunities to learn and develop their leadership skills, not just within school boundaries but also in community settings where they can also help and participate to be actively aware of the real-life societal issues we are facing.
Finally, Rachelle shared a heartfelt message to aspiring young women leaders: “Being a woman in the field of leadership is no easy task. Aspiring to such a role will undoubtedly provide challenges, but I hope you don’t get discouraged and afraid to step up because who says women can’t lead? We can and we will definitely be effective leaders. Keep in mind that we, young women, have the potential to do big things, and if given the right opportunities and platforms, all of us can bring a huge and effective change not just inside the school but also in society.”
Grateful for the supportive environment at UPIS, these young women emphasize the significance of providing a safe space for all students, particularly female student leaders who play an important role in creating positive change in the school community. They believe that this compassion should continue to grow, allowing more students to take up leadership roles without fear.
They note that while stereotypes may exist outside of school, UPIS supports inclusivity and equal opportunity regardless of gender. The emphasis is not on which gender one should be to lead, but on giving all students an equal opportunity to thrive and make a difference. They hope that UPIS will continue to encourage equality and provide opportunities for students to share their advocacy, ensuring that no woman feels constricted or limited because of her gender.
To conclude, it is evident that these women are more than mere leaders in our school community; they are also our partners in changing, empowering, and inspiring youth for a brighter future. Their dedication and passion for making a change shine as a light of hope for everyone. Let us continue to promote and empower women leaders, acknowledge their significant accomplishments, and make sure their voices are heard and valued. We hope you had a happy Women's Month celebration!

mimi di ko alam if nasagot mo na ‘to pero sino sinu-support mo na team sa basketball (if meron man) HAHAHAJSJJSKSJS both sa pba + uaap 🥹 this question just came to my mind kasi i’m rewatching the uaap match between admu and upd (yung clutch moment ni jd) and it gives me goosebumps every time
also, i just wanna say na i’m sooo happy to come across your fics and blog and felt so proud nung nalaman ko na filipino ka rin like shet pls (insert that filipino pride meme) THAT’S MY KABABAYAN WITH HER AMAZING STORIES 👏 i’m just generally glad to come across poc writers cos it makes the whole reader-insert stories feel inclusive as opposed to when (whether intentionally or unintentionally) the “reader” is 90% of the time white/white passing (like when the author describes skin and most of the time in smut scenes reader’s pussy is pink).
i got way off track from my original intention of asking you about basketball i’m so sorry 🥹
— coj 🩵
Hiii omg I love this question haha. 😂 I actually don't watch PBA anymore. Probably 20 years ago lol and I cheered for San Miguel, as in Siegle-Ildefonso-Racela era. For UAAP naman, syempre ADMU 🦅 bc school pride keme haha. But I was such a huge blue eagles fan, as in I watched live games after school, had photos with the players, was part of the 1.0 second Doug Kramer shot vs. UST crowd! College basketball is truly insane and I miss the feeling! But I stopped being updated post-COVID.
I'm a huge NBA fan though. Phoenix Suns is my top bc of Steve Nash and idk, I just always feel it's his team even it isn't haha and I can't let it go. But I'm a Boston Celtics and GS Warriors fan as well. And I perpetually root for the teams I grew up cheering for like Kings, Mavs, and Jazz. Ikaw, what are your teams??
And thank you! I also get happy when I come across Filipino and other POC writers. Like, yes it's more of an OC story but it's still a reader-insert and how they are envisioned is important, so coming from a non-majority background and presenting characters in a certain (not white/white-passing) way has been great for me. I know I can still do better though, and so I appreciate this! I'm just glad I'm able to share my work and also say that yes I'm Filipino, hi! 😊😊
But yes, no worries. Thank you for dropping by! 🫶🏼

BulSU E-Library: Student Satisfaction Level and Feedbacks Untold
by Camille Alejandrino, Cristine Camacho, Ann Sheika Salazar, & Nash Villena A prized establishment and the most recently erected infrastructure in Bulacan State University’s (BulSU) Main Campus, the 7-story BulSU E-Library towers with other buildings in the City of Malolos to showcase the university’s advancement and progress throughout the years.
The facility is known for its various services on each floor including reading areas, individual rooms, study tables, SMART area where computer access is available, and even a relaxation room.
But a year after it was opened to the public and the BulSU community, a question now stands: are the BulSU students satisfied with its services and accessibility upon new implementation of policies?
The BulSU E-library orientation
The current university librarian of Bulacan State University is Dr. Maria Pretty Lay Abdala, aiding her are 20 librarians deployed at different sections within the library.
Along with the opening of the current academic year last August, the E-Library management have since then implemented an orientation for students, faculty, and non-academic personnel.
In an interview, Dr. Abdala revealed that 75% of the 42,000 student population of BulSU have been oriented. All freshmen students have already been oriented since they required it to each college.
“[With the library orientation] so that they will be aware of the policies and procedures kasi if you’re not aware to the policies marami kang rant. Marami kang reklamo because you are not aware bakit ganon yung situation”, Dr Abdala said.
The university librarian further expresses that she is aware of the rants from the students through social media saying that the E-Library is inaccessible to all students despite the fact that the establishment is not built to cater all 40,000 students of the university in one-sitting.
“It’s a matter of how you will be informed and through library orientation malaking bagay yun for you to empower”, she expounded.
When asked what improvements they have observed since implementing the library orientation, Dr. Abdala says: “Most of our students now know how to behave properly.
She also added that through the orientation, students are now informed that they can avail their services and the library’s collection virtually, even outside the university.
“Kaya nga ang library high breed ang approach natin in delivering services, we have the face-to-face, and of course, we have the virtual services”, Dr. Abdala added.
“Ang design ng E-Library is diverse. To cater the needs of the stakeholder. Wala ng masyadong post sa library which is good kasi tatandaan niyo, kami kakampi niyo dahil nandito kami becaue of you, our stakeholders”, she emphasized.
The survey population
Based on a conducted survey of 150 students this November, it shows that most of the library patrons are from the College of Education (COED).
Given their massive population, it can be interpreted that young educators are in need of a space to study their lessons and deliver quality materials in their presentations and report whether in the classroom or at their field study deployment.
Aside from COED, there are also other college participants on the survey such as those from the College of Arts and Letters (CAL), College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), and College of Science (CS).
Going by the numbers
The survey shows 96.6% of them have entered the E-Library while 3% of them haven’t entered the facility.

In relation, when asked if they have attended the E-Library orientation from the past four months, 96 of them (64% of the respondents) have attended the BulSU E-Library’s Orientation. While the remaining 54 (36% of the respondents) haven't been oriented.

Following the implementation of the E-Library orientation, also comes the establishment of a system called SLIC (Student Library Identification Card).
“Kasi once you have the SLIC … you are aware na already to our policies. So yung mga pag-utilize ng mga services natin and then also yung ating collections, aware na sila”, Dr. Abdala explained.
Out of 150 students, 69 of them have already acquired their SLICs after going through the orientation. In comparison, 81 of them haven’t received their SLICs yet since their attendance at the orientation.

The common perspective of students
Jeibhine Turla, a third-year BSEd Major in English student from the College of Education (COED), is a library patron since its opening last year.
He says that although he can access the computer lab for online sources, it is still different from having a physical book.
When it comes to the overall academic experience of the students, 62 of them strongly agree that E-library positively contributes to their academics; 58 agree; while 20 are neutral; 5 disagree, and 5 strongly disagree.

Figure 5. Answers gathered from the question, "Do you agree that E-library promotes information literacy while providing a wide variety of print and non-print materials, other learning resources, and services?"
“Hindi lang tayo nabigyan ng chance na i-settle lahat, as you can see may mga nakahiga pang research diyan. Bakit? Kasi hindi pa siya natatapos ma-encode”, Dr. Abdala on her defense about certain learning materials’ unavailability.
“Ulitin ko coming from the different unit library is pinagsama-sama here, of course, we need to re-encode all the materials accordingly na aalisin na yung by college, but instead by university ang approach”, she added.
The “E” in the E-library
“Tatandaan natin the library is a growing organism. No, dapat tuloy-tuloy yung development natin because ang needs ng stakeholders nag-iiba yan kaya dapat sinasabayan mo”, Dr. Abdala said.
The E-library is known for its SMART area located on the sixth floor wherein students can use the computers for free and if availability permits.
In line with this, 67 students strongly agree that the E-library promotes learning with changing technology through its facilities and equipment; 58 agree; 21 are neutral; none disagree; and 4 strongly disagree.
Tumblr media
Figure 6. Answers gathered from the question, "Do you believe that E-library promotes learning and implements changing technology through its staff, facility, equipment, and programs?"
One of the virtual services the E-Library also provides is the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog).
A feedback from the survey reads: “There is simply a scarcity of materials, as I observed that thesis and dissertation materials, for example, are out of date, as is the OPAC. At times, I find it difficult to navigate”.
When it comes to the accessibility of the OPAC: 43 strongly agree; 54 agree; 37 are neutral; 11 disagree; and 5 strongly disagree.

Student general experience
Among the notable services of the E-library is its free Wi-Fi connection for its patrons at the establishment.
“We keep on follow-up sa MIS (Management Information System) … as much as i want to kasi ako din talaga gusto ko mabilis na internet, because nowadays internet is important sa student, [and] sa faculty pero it's beyond my control already. Ang magagawa ko lang is to keep on follow-up doon sa mga bagay na gano’n”, Dr. Abdala followed.
When it comes to the student’s satisfaction with the E-library’s internet access: 41 strongly agree; 39 agree; 43 are neutral; 16 disagree; and 11 strongly disagree.

Figure 8. Answers gathered from the question, "Do you agree that internet access offered inside the E-library is strong enough for you to review and study your lessons?"
In relation, to answer the question about why smartphones are not allowed to connect to the E-library’s Wi-FI, Dr. Abdala says it was to maintain the speed of the internet access of those who are studying their lessons.
“The MIS advice us not to connect to the phones of student, kasi some of them nakikita ko naman sa CCTV they’re just playing kaya bumabagal, so sabi nila talagang yung laptop at PC doon nalang talaga gumamit yung mga student”, she explained.
As for the approachability of the staff at the E-library: “We continuously improve naman in terms of staff masasabi ko naman talaga, everytime na we conduct meetings and then yung mga strategic planning namin … we keep on saying doon sa mga staff natin na how they should approach [the students] saka kung paano natin sila bibigyan services, even the security sinasabihan natin”, Dr. Abdala disclosed.
When asked if the librarians and library staff provide helpful, approachable, and responsive aid to its library patrons: 62 strongly agree; 66 agree; 14 are neutral; 3 disagree; and 5 strongly disagree.

Figure 9. Answers gathered from the question, "Are the librarians and staff in the E-library approachable, helpful, and responsive?"
A feedback from the survey reads: “I'd also like to commend the librarians and other library staff for being approachable and accommodating. It's just that one of the guards there is being provocative at times”.
Turla from COED also added: "All of the staff are approachable and helpful because they exhibit very approachable behavior and are always happy to answer any queries”.
The accessibility of the E-Library
The survey shows that 48 students strongly agree that the E-library is accessible to all BulSU students; 48 agree; 22 are neutral; 17 disagree; and 15 strongly disagree.
Tumblr media
Figure 10. Answers gathered from the question, "Do you think that the E-library is accessible for all the students here in BulSU?"
“The E-library is hard to access because of the new rule, especially with the 3rd to 4th-year students, a.k.a [sic] the generation who have not yet learned about the orientation system of the E-lib”, Turla expounded.
“Yung library natin, it is not designed to cater the 43, 000 students in one-sitting. That is why we have services, virtual”, Dr. Abdala reminded.
Thus, the university librarian herself reiterates the importance of attending the library orientation.
“Napakahalaga non kasi from then [on] mae-empower ka at mai-inform ka. Tatandaan natin na yung mga may alam, if you will not attend the orientation, therefore ano ka, may kakulangan. Kasi you don’t have the idea ano ang pwede mo i-avail. Naka-limit ka lang dun sa mga information coming from mga natatanungan mo which some of them naka-attend, some of them hindi”, Dr. Abdala expresses her worries to unoriented students relying on unreliable sources.
She also pointed out that the real enemy for them is the false information. “Akala nila [unoriented students] once they request ng isang facility, for example yung function hall, akala nila may bayad ‘yon pero hindi nila alam libre lang ‘yon.”
Although they simply have their policies of ‘first come, first served’ basis in processing the request letters, the E-library management assures the students that most of their services and facilities are for free.
Other concerns introduced
With the matter about the absence of close-circuit television (CCTV) at the baggage area: “Even me nagulat talaga ako, kaya nung nakita ko ‘yun, yung action taken ko ay to request additional CCTV which is approved already, na deliver na nga diyan. But then, we need to secure [a] budget for the installation because mahal siya."
She further explained that the E-library is not built for having its walls drilled with holes, likewise, plumbing as it can possibly result in the loss of the building’s warranty given it is still under the contractor’s name.
That also explains why there are only a few bidets at the restrooms from each floor. “So hindi tayo pwede magpa-install ng bidet as much as we want, as much as we like na magkaroon lahat ng bidet yan, hindi kasi nga [dahil] yung warranty ng building mawawala”.
Regarding about student request for more furnitures at the E-Library, “Paparating na, actually meron na tayong tatlong table diyan kaya lang di pa natin malatag kasi, ilalatag [pero] walang upuan”. Now kasi hindi pa yan bayad kasi inaantay pa natin yung ibang kasamahan niyan”, she added.
The university librarian wishes for the next year to hopefully have sets of chairs and tables that students will soon use because she says all the current furniture at the E-library will be replaced.
“Marami. I have many plans for the library, and tandaan niyo ‘no na hindi lang ako puro plans. I take action for my plans kaya suportado ko si president Teody. Kasi Pres. Teody ang thinking niya kasi kailangan action, kailangan hindi ka lang puro plano and even chancellor ganon sila”, Dr. Abdala exclaims with her plans for the E-library.
She also shared why she thought of incorporating the SLIC to the IDs of the students: to eliminate the use of library cards and the possibility of the students forgetting or losing them.
Na-deprive yung student sa pag gamit ng library which I don't like the idea. So ako talaga yung nag-paalis ng library card”, she explained.
Like furnitures, table, na pinag-isipan natin na nakita natin na talagang matutuwa kayo at gugustuhin niyong stay at the library”, she shared.
The survey judgment
Rating from one to five (the least value digit as the lowest, and the high value digit as the highest), the 150 students of Bulacan State University marked their satisfaction level accordingly: 4 as the highest with 51 students; followed by 5 with 48 students; caught up by 3 with 25 students; 1 with a few amount of 10 students; lastly, 2 with only 6 students.
Tumblr media
Figure 11. Satisfaction level of 150 BulSU students about the E-library services and accessibility.
Yet despite the data, the improvements are still expected by the students to the E-library and its management.
Turla shared one thing he would like to recommend: “It's not about the service but about the orientation. I don't think there was an announcement about the schedule for orientation - at least in my area. I feel they should publicize about that system because some of my classmates do not know how we can attend the orientation.”
In her management’s defense, the university librarian says, “Actually you know we already have the mechanism eh. We have the different platforms on how we can communicate with our stakeholders. We have the Facebook page, [where] we keep on posting sa fb for them to be updated sa mga new services or kaya mga new collections natin or new databases. We keep on posting that dun sa ating FB page”.
“Lahat ng mechanism pinasok na natin in terms of how we can inform the students dun sa mga policies and guidelines natin sa library and of course for them to update dun sa ano nila information nila, with regards to our services and collections”, she expounded. Furthermore, “Nakipag-tie up tayo sa SG kasi they are the ones to disseminate doon sa LSC (Local Student Councils) kung ano yung mga schedule nung mga student within the colleges. But then na-stop nga dahil tapos na yung dates kung hanggang kailan tayo mag-oorient dahil walang umattend”. “So I don’t think na may kakulangan tayo sa part na yon”, Dr. Abdala claimed.
Bridging the disconnect
In conclusion, the survey and the interview with the university librarian have concluded that it all boils down to the disconnect and the poor communication between the students and the E-Library management, as well as their own shortcomings along with matters out of their own control.
Hence it is crucial for the two parties to take the steps forward to thoroughly understand each other and make compromise: eliminating the miscommunications and even misinformation about the library and its services.
At the bottom of things, the E-Library belongs to the BulSU community, and everyone has their parts in establishing a harmonious relation to one another to genuinely show that Bulacan State University has indeed come far as an educational institution, beyond landscape developments, fostering conversations within its community ready to soar above greater heights and achieve progress with no one getting left behind.

The Storytelling Continues: Inside the Minds of Cinephiles
Watching a film is probably among the simplest joys of life. Whatever its genre, format, storyline, or actors, the audience watching a film is bound to feel something that makes their mind think and process what the film has to offer. On the one hand, some people are understandably not fond of it, but on the other hand, there is also a large population who simply cannot get enough of watching a single film from time to time— they are what we call cinephiles.
Cinephilia is the term used to describe the passionate interest and enthusiasm for films. One can consider themselves a cinephile if they have a strong appreciation for film as an art form, as the definition can be loose and cannot exactly be put into a box.
In the context of the present, there are countless ways one can watch a film aside from the usual way of going to movie theaters and watching on the big screens. This can either be through televisions, with TV stations broadcasting films within their airtimes, or through countless streaming websites and platforms with their convenience for the viewer to watch at any given time.
It is important to take note that regardless of where the film was shown, a person’s enthusiasm for films is certain to develop if what they watched truly resonated with them and the film has something they can remember for days and even years to come. This is how a cinephile is born.
Dorothy, a 17-year-old, enjoys films about mysteries. At a young age, she came to love film watching, and her favorite is the Bollywood film 3 Idiots, released in 2013. What she likes about it are the moral lessons, the actors, and the jokes certain to tickle people’s funny bone.
Iya, a 19-year-old, loves films with a touch of romance and tragedy. For her, it does not necessarily matter whether the films are local or foreign-produced, as long as the reviews or synopsis are fine. She looks forward to watching the recently released 2023 Summer Metro Manila Film Festival entry film Yung Libro sa Napanood Ko, directed by Bela Padilla.
“As long as the storyline is justifiably delivered and the moral of it is well messaged, that is how long the movie should be”, she said when asked how long a film should run. This was evident with her favorite film, The Day After Valentine's, released in 2018, as the film has a runtime of less than a couple of hours and perfectly explores the complexity of being in love.
“The main characters there tend to fix each other while they themselves are broken. This kind of plot got me [a] big time as it shows how consuming it is to pour on a cup from an empty glass”, she added.
Mary, a 21-year-old critical cinephile, says she doubts watching the 2022 film An Inconvenient Love, starring Belle Mariano and Donny Pangilinan, also known as the popular loveteam “DonBelle”. She said she tends to watch films based on people's reviews of the film, and with that DonBelle film, some say it is heartbreaking, and she doesn't want sad endings.
As for Mary’s favorite film, she is certain it is Finally Found Someone (2017), starring Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz, because she said the film portrays the reality of being in love, getting hurt, and what it feels like to fall in love again. “Their chemistry on screen felt so natural... they can make you feel “kilig”, she emphasized.
Truly, films, regardless of their language, length, actors, or target audience, are bound to make people feel something. It tells stories where they feel they are seen and felt one way or another; likewise, it makes people experience what it’s like to be in situations they haven’t been in. And that indescribable magic alone is probably the reason why cinephiles keep and will keep watching films for as long as there is a story to tell. | via Cristine Camacho and Nash Villena, BA Journalism 2A

Counselling
A Performance Task Script About Counselling For Disciplines and Ideas in Social Science
Written by Melonny Grahams
Ayaw niya talaga magpa-awat oh.
ADVISER: Class, ano nangyayari dito? Dinig na dinig may nakikipag away. Sino yun? ADVISER: Class, totoo ba yon? JONJON: Yes po maam.
ADVISER: Okay. Everyone go back to your proper seat. Since exam natin today, after class ko na kayo kakausapin Mr. Jay-r and Ms. Shiela.
If you’re going through something, i recommend that you seek help from our school counselor. Wala kang kailangan ikabahala dun. Is it okay with you if dadalin kita ngayon sa counselor?
NASH: Magandang araw Shiela, I am Mr. Nash and i will be your counselor today. Please introduce yourself.
SHIELA: Nice to meet you po Mr. Nash.
Unless under certain circumstances na may kailanganin silang malaman tungkol sayo, then that is only when I can disclose the information needed to them. But we will also let you know kung ganito man and hihingin namin ang iyong permission.
NASH:  You are free to express youself here. I am here to guide you sa mga bagay na nahihirapan ka and to achieve your goals. You may start sharing know, kamusta ka ngayon?
NASH:  Anong nangyari before non?
NASH:  How does it make you feel nung binubully mo siya?
NASH: So wala silang katotohanan?
SHIELA: Yes po, wala.
NASH: So ikaw po ay nagagalit dahil yung support na meron si Jay-r now ay hindi mo po nakuha despite both of you trying out the same thing.
NASH:  Can you identify kung ano yung talagang gusto mong ma-achieve?
NASH:  It is very good that you are able to identify kung ano yung pinaka pinagmulan ng emotions mo and the reason behind your actions. Also, you discovered what it is that you truly want. But in order to achieve what you want, it is a process. Kakailanganin ng intervention. What are the other things about yourself that you want to work on?
NASH:  Para sa intervention I suggest the following process goals namely: Improving Relationship and Facilitating your Potential. You’ve mentioned that the main reason why you bullied your friend ay dahil sa galit, which is caused by the fact na he’s work is supported and appreciated by others especially your classmates.
Being in a healthy environment and being surrounded by people that can motivate you and teach you new things will influence you to do good things and further learn what is right and wrong in many different situations. NASH: Second is Facilitating your Potential. Dito naman ay gagamitin natin ang mga previous achievements mo and skills mo to motivate you sa goal mo. You can also ask help from your classmates and your friend para mag improve ka Do you have any questions about sa process goals?
You said it yourself na ayaw mo na itong maulit pa and that is good kasi ina-acknowledge mo yung nangyari. But ask yourself also, how would you feel if that were you being bullied and targeted by false information.
NASH: Tama. When you apologize,  you have to admit what you did and acknowledge the effects of it to that person. NASH: That is very good. Let us have a recap of the whole session. The reason why you bullied your friend ay dahil nagagalit ka na siya ay nakaka kuha ng support and appreciation sa content niya, meanwhile ikaw ay hindi? Tama po ba? SHIELA: Yes po.
NASH: And ang gusto mong ma-achieve ay magkaron ng support and appreciation yung gawa mo at hindi na maulit ang nangyaring pambubully. Tama po? SHIELA: Yes po. At ito po ay maabot ko through Improving relationships and Facilitating my Potential.
NASH: Tama. We’re going to work on the things about you that needs improvement and may kinalaman sa goals na gusto mong makuha. NASH: The negative emotions that you felt which pushed you to bully your friend can be turned into something positive, pwede mo siyang maging motivation to do better. And bago ka gumawa or magsabi ng kahit ano…
Do you have any more concerns or questions?
NASH: Yes po, babalik ka dito every week for follow up.
NASH: I am very glad to help you. So I’ll see you next week but if you have any concerns, you can come here anytime during weekdays, okay?
SHIELA: Yes po, see you next week po. Thank you so much po.
SHIELA: Jay-r, Im sorry binully kita. I’m sorry.
So ganto yung nangyari…..
NASH: It seems that you’ve already achieved your goals and effective ang interventions. SHIELA: Thank you po sainyo.
NASH: You're welcome, I am very glad to help you. Before we terminate this counseling process I’ll just evaluate the whole counseling. Then ang root cause no’n ay negative emotion which is inis. After three months of doing them ay na-achieve mo ang iyong goal. Tama po ba? SHIELA: Yes po.
NASH: Congratulations Ms. Shiela on your successful counseling journey. Keep on improving and if you need help, you can come here anytime. SHIELA: Thank you so much po.

music recs?
/reviewing the first 10 songs i got when i shuffled my downloads jfdfhskjfd
doing something a little different :p
1. Dying Star - Ruston Kelly: 7.3/10. I like the guitar, it doesn't drag on too long, the harmonizing with the other vocalist towards the end is very nice and it feels honest and worn down which matches the lyrics. not super outstanding just a peaceful angsty song.
2. All For Love - Jukebox the Ghost: 8.5/10. I really like this one. they're one of my favorite bands tbh and Safe Travels has a lot of their best music. the piano is beautiful as always and it feels very wintry which I like a lot.
3. Goodmorning - Bleachers: 8.9/10. extremely catchy, I like the callbacks to Wild Heart and the scattered feel of it. the instruments are really pretty in this one!! I don't think it's a *masterpiece* + I don't like the one-sided music in places, it is a bad sensory experience lmao. but very good song.
4. pajamas - Garrett Nash: 6.8/10. see I have had this in my downloads for a million years and it mainly gets points docked for being super basic and a little cliche. but I think it's sweet and it sounds nice so it's not a *bad* listen.
5. Don't Go Slippin' Away - The Brook & the Bluff: 8/10. the album- Yard Sale- is one of my favorites and has been since I think December? but this song isn't the best on the album. it is a little repetitive. still sounds super nice though.
6. Tomorrow - MIKA: 9/10. ok this has everything to do with when and how I found this song bear with me. I love MIKA and I found this song 1 1/2yrs ago, midsummer, when I had an absolutely untamable crush. the atmosphere was perfect. also it's a very pretty and polished song with an immaculate aesthetic. would recommend.
7. One More Time - Jon Bellion: 5.8/10. I downloaded all of The Separation at once so this is just in my library now. the only upside to this objectively bad and unsexy song with unnecessary amounts of panting in the background and what seems to be the aesthetic of a stadium (????) is that it is so goddamn funny.
8. What'd I Do With All This Faith? - Bleachers: 9.4/10. I want to be fair and unbiased even though this is my favorite song atm (save 45 from the same album) but I absolutely adore this song. without getting too personal I know this song is about politics but I project a different meaning onto it and it makes a great crying song FDHSGFHDJ. I love the saxophones, I love the varying volume, it's just about perfect imo.
9. The Photograph - The Night Game: 7.8/10. good concept, good execution, good vocals, but not super outstanding in any of those categories. what I find more interesting is the artist in this case actually, you should check out his stuff it is wild. super inconsistent and unique lmao-- with a couple songs that can only be described as "yung gravy if he was an art major" (looking at you Magic Trick.)
10. Good Wife - MIKA: 9.6/10. I think this song is fcking outstanding just in concept alone lmao. it sounds nice but it's also surprisingly funny and relevant, general gay anthem. would absolutely recommend.
