Some music superstars of the previous decades changed in the 90's by getting a different name for that time in order to be heard. David Bowie did something in this vein a few times during the 90's, if I'm not mistaken. For instance, he released the original version of the tune on the link without his name on the single and the latter became successful in clubs. He later covered his own piece under the name Tao Jones Index, which was him and his backing band at the time. Sadly, he only worked as Tao Jones on a couple of gigs, because the song does show this could've evolved into a dance project for Bowie. However, would this have gone the way of Tin Machine? Album Review: David Bowie - Ouvrez le Chien

It takes a lot of skipping around to get to the good stuff on David Bowie’s Ouvrez le Chien.

Recorded Oct. 13, 1995, in Dallas during the Outside tour, the full-show, streaming-only LP also features two tracks from Dec. 13 of that year, leaving it with two versions of “Under Pressure,” which is two too many.

Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) “Teenage Wildlife” and Outside’s “I Have Not Been to Oxford Town” are highlights and find Bowie’s synthesis of post-new wave and industrial hitting the aural bullseye perfectly. Meanwhile, older cuts such as “Look Back in Anger” and “Andy Warhol” sputter in their updated arrangements despite strong performances from Bowie, lead guitarist Carlos Alomar, drummer Zachary Alford and bassist Gail Ann Dorsey, who sings Freddie Mercury’s parts on both versions of “Under Pressure,” one song that could’ve used a reboot but is played close to the original.

Ouvrez le Chien (French for Open the Dog) captures Bowie in a relative and experimental lull as even the usually sure-fire “Moonage Daydream” and “Breaking Glass” fail to catch a spark. That’s the price fans must pay for the privilege of experiencing a career as wildly divergent as his.

The veteran musicians' latest works tend to find them trying to converse with the modern scenes. A great question here would be – should they try to? Check Bowie who was never a big seller, yet I'm sure his influence dwarfed some who had larger numbers. However, he also kept being savvy in his choices with The Next Day showing that. Set aside the music there – the follow-up was much better, I agree – and think of the way he played with our expectations on his comeback. While the surface was familiar – some tunes belong on a Reality bonus disc –, the lyrics moved to the Walker mode of darkness. However, he didn't go fully there, because The Next Day had to serve as an invitation for us to join him again. Yes, he played us again as he always did.
