wait.. i’m literally on here or weibo almost 24/7 ( as you can tell lol ) but I feel like i missed something. i’m seeing clowning related to xz’s photos and how it looks like he is a groom and it’s a wedding photoshoot. the place is also famous for wedding shoots ( allegedly, idk. i’m not from there ) so turtles are imagining again. lol. freakin coincidence that wyb’s GRA photoshoot was done at a wedding shop. plus the “wedding outfits” for weibo night. which is all clowning and galaxy braining.🌌

now, we’re joking around, like where’s yibo? he should be taking photos with his partner.

then i see comments that there is this one song WYB recently listened to. meaning, as recent as when XZ flew to singapore which is called 超人不会飞 (superman can’t fly) by Jay Chou. i know WYB and everyone else is a big fan of Jay Chou but the clowning comes from the timing of when he listened to it. let me get to that first.

here is the song if you wanna listen to it. 🎶

turtles are interpreting it as WYB longing to “fly” to where XZ is and be with him but he can’t because of all his work commitments. he wants to take a breather. thinking about what his life is and the constraints, and at times like this, when they spent days in Beijing, but now they have to be apart, it affects him even more.

however when i read the lyrics, it could also be because he can relate to what jay chou is singing about. here’s the english translation i found here. i have bolded the ones i felt like WYB relates too. literally no need for explanation. just read it. It fits with his status in life so much that it’s almost scary.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with how cpfs are relating this to cpn cause that’s just how it is. But sometimes, there are other reasons why they do what they do.

SO MY CONFUSION COMES FROM HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE KNOW WHAT HE RECENTLY LISTENED TO. I can’t seem to dig up how or maybe it’s something we don’t talk about. I have never experienced this kind of tidbit related to them before so I wanna know the source. cinderella chef [萌妻食神] (2018)

Hsu Thassapak is a snacc.

Just needed to get that out of my head. Anyways, Cinderella Chef is a Chinese historical drama that enters around Ye JiaYao as she is transported from modern day Shanghai to ancient China. She’s a chef, which is what first drew me to the drama. I’m a stickler for those food centered ones, but I stayed for the beauty that is Hsu Thassapak. 

Now, like many longer dramas, this once can be divided into two parts. It was disappointing seeing how they completely scrapped the first half. They almost completely changed the plot in the second half. I really don’t understand why they couldn’t just keep it going. I was surprised that I actually liked the female lead. She wasn’t completely useless like the usual female leads in dramas. 

In terms of the story, it did drag. I’m not going to lie here. The middle just dragged way too much and the ending left more to be desired. However, I just had to continue. There was just too much gross revenge and everything was just tied up in a neat little bow. The second half really wasn’t too believable. Also, Chinese humor is a bit odd for me, but I’m used to it. 

Overall? Solid 7.

Xiao x Lecteur (F) : Qui es-tu? (Part 1)

Note de l'auteur:  Comme pour Diluc, je compte faire plusieurs chapitres décrivant la relation de Xiao avec le lecteur. Je veux un Xiao doux  <3  et puis quand on a Matsuoka Yoshitsugu comme seiyuu, comment peut on ne pas l'aimer ?! (même si ça sera sûrement compliqué pour lui de comprendre les émotions qui le traversent !).

Qui es-tu?

Le dernier gardien Yaksha était effondré au sol, blessé, épuisé. Son dernier combat contre les ténèbres avait duré une bonne partie de la nuit, alourdissant davantage le karma du jeune homme aux cheveux sombres parsemés de mèches émeraude. Les voix de ceux qu'il avait tués embrumaient son esprit, causant d'atroce douleur à son âme et son corps. Allongé sur le ventre incapable d'ouvrir les yeux, sa main chercha difficilement sa lance de jade ailée tombée à terre avec lui. Un gémissement de douleur racla sa gorge au mouvement.

Le jeune homme sursauta brièvement en entendant des bruits de pas approcher de lui rapidement, sentant des mains saisir ses épaules pour le retourner prudemment. Il tenta à nouveau d'ouvrir ses yeux, sa vision était floue et brumeuse. Il n'arrivait pas à distinguer les traits de l'humain qui l'avait saisi, sentant simplement sa main caresser avec douceur ses cheveux dans une tentative d'apaisement. La voix qu'il entendait l'appeler avec inquiétude ressemblait à celle d'une femme, douce et chaleureuse.

Une lumière apaisante enveloppa la jeune femme, le garçon ne comprenait pas ce qui se passait car dans la seconde qui suivit, son corps s'allégeait, ses douleurs s'évaporaient, rêvait-il ? Bien que sa vision soit toujours floue, il réussit néanmoins à distinguer un peu mieux les contours de la jeune femme aux longs cheveux (couleur).

« Qui es-tu? »

Sa voix était marquée par la fatigue. Il réussit à distinguer un fin sourire sur le visage de sa sauveuse. Il répéta plus faiblement:

« Qui es-tu... ? »

Ses yeux s'affaissèrent, la forme éthérée de la jeune femme lui rappelant des souvenirs lointains, une chaleur soudaine fit irruption dans son cœur. Des larmes perlèrent dans le coin de ses yeux.

« Gui...zhong ? »

Le paysage autour de lui s'assombrit, le menant tout droit dans une douce torpeur.

Xiao se réveilla en sursaut. Où était-il? L'auberge Wangshu ? Oui, il reconnaissait ses appartements, mais comment était il arrivé jusqu'ici? Il se souvenait encore de son combat contre la horde de monstres qu'il avait terrassé. Il leva sa main droite vers son visage, l'examinant de plus près. Il n'avait plus aucune blessure, plus aucune douleur ce qui le ramena à la jeune femme qu'il pensait avoir vue. Avait il halluciné ? L'avait elle vraiment soignée? Tout lui paraissait flou. Il se leva du lit sans difficulté, se dirigeant directement vers le balcon qui se trouvait au dernier étage de l'auberge. Il observa les alentours, espérant trouver la femme qui l'avait aidé. Le soleil commençait à se coucher, il avait donc passé la journée à se reposer ici. C'était inhabituel pour lui, n'étant pas humain il n'avait donc pas les mêmes besoins qu'eux, dormir, manger, vivre avec autrui, tout ça lui paraissait ridicule. Il s'en voulait presque d'être resté inconscient si longtemps, frappant l'une des colonnes en bois du balcon. Xiao s'en retourna, se dirigeant vers les escaliers, descendant rapidement les marches pour rejoindre l'aubergiste de Wangshu, Verr Goldet.

« Verr. »

La jeune femme porta son attention sur Xiao.

« Bonsoir seigneur Xiao, vous êtes vous remis de votre dernier combat? »

« As-tu vu qui m'as amené ici? »

Verr ne s'offusqua pas de son ton brusque, secouant simplement la tête pour lui signifier que non. Xiao claqua la langue, agacé. Il avait besoin de savoir qui était cette mystérieuse femme qui avait prit soin de lui. Le souvenir de la chaleur qui émanait d'elle lui serra de nouveau le cœur, ramenant ses pas vers la sortie de l'auberge. Il heurta brusquement un jeune homme aux cheveux blonds, accompagné de son agaçante petite créature.

« Xiao? »

Aether regarda Xiao avec de grands yeux ronds, il n'avait pas pour habitude de le voir avec une telle expression. Il était déboussolé, frustré et en colère, voilà toutes les émotions qui traversait le yaksha depuis son réveil.

« Xiao n'est pas de bonne humeur »- Paimon virevolta autour de lui- « Tu devrais venir manger quelque chose avec nous, rien ne vaut un bon repas pour... »

« Je n'ai pas besoin de ça ! »

Paimon sursauta, se cachant derrière Aether. Xiao tenta de se calmer en inspirant un grand bol d'air, passant à côté du voyageur sans dire un mot.

« Attends Xiao! Où vas tu? »

Aether l'arrêta, empoignant son bras sans trop de force pour ne pas le brusquer davantage. Xiao donna immédiatement un coup sec sur son bras pour se dégager, il regrettait ses mots brusques, il détestait ça. Avant de connaître Aether, il n'avait jamais eu besoin de se soucier des autres ni de la façon de se comporter avec eux, il était seul et ça lui convenait. Tout ça était trop... humain pour lui. Lentement, il tourna son regard vers le voyageur.

« Aether je... suis désolé. »

« Xia...! »

Sans dire un mot de plus, Xiao disparut dans un courant d'air.

Lorsque vous aviez débarqué à Liyue depuis votre terre natale, Sumeru, il y a quelques mois de ça, un combat terrifiant s'était déroulé au port de la ville. Un ancien Dieu qui avait été autrefois scellé par le seigneur de la roche s'était libéré de sa prison, tentant par la même occasion de détruire le port de Liyue, fort heureusement il avait été stoppé rapidement.

Depuis ses évènements, vous aviez commencé à voyager sur les terres du géo archonte, étudiant la faune et la flore locale. Les fleurs vous avaient toujours fascinées, leurs formes, leurs odeurs, leurs significations ou leurs bienfaits, vous étudiez absolument tout, notant et dessinant dans un carnet tout ce que vous croisiez.

À Sumeru, vous aviez rejoint la prestigieuse académie de magie pour y perfectionner votre art et approfondir vos connaissances. Plus d'une fois vos professeurs vous ont répété que votre manipulation de votre vision dendro était exceptionnelle, certaines cités états cherchant déjà à vous recruter en tant que chercheuse ou soigneuse, mais vous aviez toujours refusé, préférant rester libre de vos mouvements. Une fois vos études terminées, vous avez rapidement décidé de quitter votre patrie, souhaitant apprendre davantage de vos voisins. Vos pas vous menèrent finalement à Liyue.

Vous étiez partie très tôt ce matin, vous dirigeant vers la forêt de pierres Huaguang depuis le marais Dihua. En chemin, vous aviez croisé un jeune homme grièvement blessé portant des tatouages couleur émeraude sur lui. Son visage, malgré les blessures, était magnifique et lorsqu'il avait ouvert ses yeux, la couleur ambre vous avait immédiatement fascinée. Vous ne pouviez pas le laisser comme ça, blessé et meurtri, faisant appel à votre vision dendro pour le soigner. Lorsque vous l'utilisiez, elle projetait sur vous une aura couleur jade et une zone fleurie poussait autour de vous, libérant l'énergie qui vous permettait de soigner les blessures, même les plus profondes. Il avait tenté à plusieurs reprises de vous demander de vous identifier, ce que vous aviez fait, mais la fatigue apparente du jeune homme avait fermé ses sens.

Guizhong, voilà la dernière chose qu'il vous avait dîtes. Qui était-ce? Il vous semblait pourtant avoir déjà lu ce nom dans un des livres que vous aviez empruntés à l'académie. Vous n'aviez pas pu lui demander, la fatigue l'emportant loin de vous. Vous saviez que non loin se trouvait une auberge, ça allait être difficile mais vous deviez l'y emmener pour qu'il puisse se reposer. Lorsque vous l'avez relevé, entourant son bras autour de vos épaules pour le soutenir, sa lance posée au sol disparu d'elle-même. Vous aviez ajusté votre prise avant de commencer votre marche.

Après plusieurs minutes à vous remémorer ces évènements, vous remarquiez que vous étiez enfin arrivé devant les hautes falaises d'Huaguang. Prenant votre courage à deux mains, vous vous préparée mentalement pour escalader la falaise. Là haut se trouvait une fleur que vous souhaitiez absolument étudier, la fleur de Qingxin. Elles poussaient exclusivement sur les plus hauts sommets de pierre, évitant chaleur et humidité, une fleur solitaire et difficile à atteindre.

« Ça va aller ! »

Vous retroussiez vos manches, posant vos pieds et vos mains là où ils pouvaient s'accrocher, lentement vous avez commencé votre ascension.

La nuit était tombé sur les plaines de Liyue et c'est au sommet du pic de Qingyun que le Yaksha s'était réfugié, observant les étoiles plus brillantes que jamais. Assis au bord de la falaise, le souvenir de la jeune femme le hantait. La douleur dans sa poitrine lui fit serrer les poings, jamais il n'avait ressenti ça, il ne savait même pas quel nom mettre sur ces sentiments. Xiao était un adepte vieux de millier d'années, les sentiments humains ne le concernaient pas, alors pourquoi? Pourquoi une telle souffrance à la simple pensée d'une... inconnue? Mais était ce vraiment une inconnue? Cette femme lui avait rappelé une ancienne amie, Guizhong, morte durant la guerre des archontes. Pouvait elle être revenue sous une forme éthérée? Ou peut être était ce un nouveau tour que les démons avaient trouvé pour le torturer un peu plus.

Au loin, Xiao aperçut une faible lumière couleur jade provenant de la forêt de pierres d'Huaguang. Il écarquilla les yeux, se souvenant de cette lueur qui lui avait sauvé la vie. Son cœur se mit à battre furieusement dans sa poitrine.

« C'est... impossible... je t'ai trouvé. »

Sa voix tremblait à la vue de la douce émanation. Elle le réchauffait, l'apaisait, les voix qui constamment le martelaient se turent et son corps habituellement douloureux était désormais léger. Enfin il comprit son obsession pour vous, lorsque vous l'aviez soigné plus tôt ce matin, un lien entre vous s'était établi, un lien aussi fort que celui qui l'unissait à Morax pour qui il vouait le plus grand respect et la plus grande dévotion.  Xiao se leva, regardant dans la direction où vous vous trouviez. Il disparut dans le souffle du vent.

Vous étiez enfin arrivé en haut de la falaise, repérant tout de suite deux-trois fleurs de Qingxin. Vous vous êtes immédiatement agenouillée au côté de l'une d'elles, sortant votre carnet et votre crayon. Vous commenciez à dessiner cette fleur magnifique sous toutes ses coutures, notant ici et là les caractéristiques que vous pouviez observer. Satisfaire de tout ce que vous aviez pu voir, vous vous êtes enfin tourné vers le paysage plongé dans l'obscurité de la nuit. Le ciel de Liyue était parsemé d'étoiles qui brillaient de mille feux. Assise en tailleur au centre du sommet de la falaise, votre regard c'est de nouveau tourné vers les fleurs de Qingxin, vous rappelant soudainement le jeune homme que vous aviez secouru. Lorsque vous aviez plongé votre regard dans le sien, ses yeux vous paraissaient si tristes, si seul. La douleur qui semblait émaner de lui vous avait heurté au plus haut point.

Vous détourniez de nouveau votre attention pour la diriger vers les étoiles. Votre esprit était obnubilé par ce garçon et c'est en pensant à lui que vous commenciez à chanter un ancien poème de Sumeru. Les paroles, bien que chanté dans votre langue natale, étaient à n'en pas douter triste et mélancolique. Vos mains se placèrent devant vous, paumes vers le ciel, les yeux clos, activant ainsi votre vision dendro. Un cercle vert jade encercla toute la surface de la falaise, des particules de lumière s'échappant du sol. Peu à peu, des fleurs bleues luminescentes commençaient à pousser autour de vous, suivant le rythme de votre chant.

Ce fut un violent courant d'air qui vous coupa, ouvrant vos yeux de surprise. Vous sursautez lorsque vous constater que devant vous se tenait le jeune homme aux yeux ambrés. Il était essoufflé, raide comme un piquet, ses yeux ne quittant jamais les vôtres. Quelque chose en lui vous paraissait différent de ce matin, dans ses yeux vous pouviez y voir... de la paix? Il s'approcha prudemment de vous, s'agenouillant devant vous pour se mettre à votre hauteur. Il prit l'une de vos mains dans la sienne, la serrant délicatement. Les particules que vous aviez créées virevoltaient autour de vous, illuminant la scène. Votre cœur battait la chamade maintenant qu'il était en face de vous, vous le trouviez encore plus séduisant sous la lueur de la lune. Ses yeux brillaient d'un éclat incroyable, ses tatouages luisaient eux aussi d'un doux éclat émeraude.

Votre voix, votre apparence, tout lui semblait doux à ses yeux, rien d'étonnant à ce qu'il vous confonde avec Guizhong, vous lui ressembliez sous certains aspects.

Ses lèvres tremblaient légèrement alors qu'il continuait d'examiner votre visage, une question semblait vouloir franchir le seuil de ses lèvres. Sa main libre monta jusqu'à votre visage, plaçant l'une de vos mèches derrière votre oreille.

« Qui es-tu? » -Son ton était plus brutal qui ne l'avait voulu.-

Vos yeux s'écarquillèrent à la question. Bien sûr vous n'aviez pas pu vous présenter ni apprendre qui il était, son nom, ce qu'il faisait. Vous vouliez tout savoir de cet homme qui avait marqué votre cœur. Voyant que vous ne répondiez pas, il reposa sa question dans un doux murmure, vous faisant rougir.

« Qui es tu? »

« (V/n)... »

Et pour la première fois depuis votre rencontre, un sourire étira ses lèvres, un silence accompagnant votre réponse. Son sourire disparut aussi rapidement qu'il était apparu, sa main  lâcha la vôtre.

« Xiao. »

Vous le regardiez intensément, le visage complètement rouge alors qu'il se redressait sur ses jambes.

« Tant que tu seras à Liyue, je te protégerais. Appelle-moi et je serais là dans la seconde qui suit.»

Vous avez lentement hoché la tête, fasciné par cet homme qui n'avait décidément rien d'humain. Il vous observa encore quelques secondes, ses yeux envoûtés par votre présence avant de disparaître comme il était apparu...

« Xiao... »

Finally watched the first episode of Challenges at Midlife.

Impressions (with spoilers) below:

So, since I don't speak Mandarin Chinese at all, am entirely reliant on the provided English subtitle. The first thing I noticed was that the subtitle can be a bit wonky at times. Thus far, seems like it's mostly "squeezing" Chinese grammar structure into English (this is purely a guess based off awkward sentences and such) as well as putting "your" when contextually it should have been "my". Example:

The "your" instead of "my" translation mistake occured several more times throughout the episode. It's still easy to overlook though, and even with the aforementioned wonky sentences (that happened less than the your/my switcharoo), I was still able to follow the story along without getting too lost (for the most part). Idk if this will be a consistent thing with the subtitles, I just hope it won't get worse. (LOL.)

Next. I went into the drama completely blind. I didn't know the premise much less the plot; I just knew ZYX stars in it as a supporting character and that's about it. (LOL) So I was a bit surprised when I realised the story follows a mixed timeline.

The opening takes place during the early 90s, before jumping ahead to the year 2018. Then it comes back to 1998. Even during the scenes that take place in late 2010s, there's some flashback to the 90s sprinkled throughout — mostly presented as the character(s) thinking about the past.

For me personally, this non-linear storytelling with constant jumping back and forth is a bit hard to keep track of, mainly because am not used to it. Because of my personal lack of experience with this storytelling format, I can't exactly say whether the way they do it is fine or is to the detriment of the story. That being said, now knowing this is the format they chose to go with, am at least more prepared before watching episode 02 onwards.

Third thing I want to comment on is the camera work. More specifically, the way they shoot the scene during the confrontation at Jian family house after the funeral of Jian Zhi Guo (played by Jian Baixuan):

Look, am not a technical gal, all right. I know very little about filmmaking or videography, but I know that I like something when I see it. Here are several things I can list that I like about it:

I like the natural lighting. I feel like a lot of live actions (movies and series both) nowadays rely a bit too much on artificial lighting and recolouring. Challenges at Midlife at least seems to be mostly shot with natural lighting, and I really love its usage in this scene in particular because it feels a lot more immersive. It really did feel like being in the same room as them.

I like the way Minmin is standing separated from the rest of her family, even including her husband. It's a pretty basic composition setting am pretty sure. But even without any addition of stark contrast between where she stands and where the others sit, you can just feel the emotional distance she keeps. (God, who knew you can act just by standing? Dan Ni is such a queen for that.)

Additionally, here's something I just noticed as I took the screenshot: Notice how small Lixin, Mother Jian, and Hongchen look when we're seeing the shot from Minmin's side. At this point in the story we're already aware of her ambition to be the legitimate successor of Zhi Guo's business. Also in this scene, it's revealed how much Minmin feels she has contributed and supported her family, yet also feeling like she's underappreciated. Those emotions combined with the shot, makes me feel like Minmin actually not only resent her family (including her husband, Lixin—from whom I get slimy, slimy vibes) but also look down on them. Mwah. Chef's kiss. Character development through visuals alone? Love to see it.

(Wouldn't it be funny, though, if later on in the story everything I've said about Minmin is proven to be entirely incorrect and that I am, in fact, just reaching? LOL.)

The last thing I want to say is I adore the acting from Xia Meng and young Ning Shu (alas, yet another actor whose name I can't find). I got past teary-eyed and went straight to crying when Ning Hui came home and both kids started asking for their father. Absolutely gut wrenching. Everyone's acting in the drama is good! But these two kids—oh, lord, they made me bawl.

Anyway, I think that's all I've got to say about Challenges at Midlife ep01. Funny enough, though I watched it for ZYX I don't think I have too much to say about him or adult Ning Shu, LOL. But I take that as a W for the drama: it's so incredibly good that in its entirety it totally sucked me in instead of just focusing on one actor.

Maybe I'll make this a regular update every time I finished watching an episode. Idk.
