save zilker park in austin
Tumblr media
got this email today & passing it along to any fellow austinites -- or anyone who’s been to austin and enjoyed zilker park for music, picnics, riding bikes, flying kites, or just hanging out:
---
Back in 2002, the ACL Music Festival kicked off in Austin’s Zilker Park.  Since then, the festival has grown tremendously, from 43,000 attendees in 2002 to nearly half a million over two weekends in 2022.  In 2014, the ACL Festival lost its local ownership when C3 Presents was acquired by Live Nation, a monopoly in the music industry that is under investigation by the Justice Department for abuse of its power.
As things stand today, Austinites have already lost access to a large portion of Zilker Park for much of the fall when major commercial events take over the Great Lawn and other parts of the park.
Despite this loss of public park space, special interests including Live Nation are now pushing a plan to transform Zilker Park into a year-round entertainment district to service commercial events and their wealthier patrons.
The City of Austin is considering a $200 million dollar plan to completely redevelop Zilker Park which includes:
3 Parking Garages within the park -- representing a 90% increase in permanent parking spaces within the park
A 5,000-seat amphitheater located on the Great Lawn
A large welcome center and terrace above the Barton Creek spillway
If this plan is enacted, the park would become something like a playground for the well-off, with expensive parking garages servicing pricey music festivals, weddings, and other events with VIP tickets and packages.  It is a costly and environmentally destructive plan that would make Zilker Park much less accessible for most Austinites.
A recent Public Policy Poll shows clear citywide opposition to this plan – across every one of Austin’s ten Council Districts – in stark numbers:
76% of Austinites like Zilker Park the way it is
79% are opposed to paid parking garages within the park
83% are opposed to an Amphitheater on the Great Lawn
Unfortunately, City Council appears poised to give approval to this plan on July 20th.
You can help stop this misguided plan by writing to the City Council, and by speaking against the plan at City Council.
You can also help by donating to the Save Zilker Park PAC, which is activating Austinites to oppose the plan.  You can donate to the PAC here.
---
One thing this email didn’t mention is that when Austin gets hit by particularly severe spring flooding, many of those years it’s Zilker Park that acts like a catch-basin or flow-over from the river. But if Zilker Park’s 350 acres get paved over with impermeable surfaces like parking garages and an amphitheater, you can bet they’ll put in some kind of barrier to prevent the park from flooding.
So on years when Zilker Park would’ve been covered in 2′ of water, that ~30,492,000 gallons of water will have to go somewhere else: into the city on the other side of the river, but more likely downstream to drown East Austin (the poorest districts in the city) even more.
As in, there are literal downstream effects from Austin losing its biggest river-side greenspace.

They shut down that laser tag place, did you hear? The one off Ben White, yeah. The one with a big UFO and a bunch of aliens sticking out of it. Man, that place ruled. I went there for a birthday once, played a couple games of tag, hung out in the arcade. I won the jackpot on one of those spinning light games. You know those things are rigged? Doesn't matter how fast your reflexes are, the machine's programmed to only allow the jackpot space to be hit every so often. I just got lucky. That's just how life is sometimes, I guess. You're at the right place at the right time, and suddenly you've got way more tickets than anyone else at the arcade. Anyway, it's a shame that place is closing down. It really feels like a lot of the places that kids could hang out are going away, you know? Malls are mostly obsolete and you see videos of nearly-abandoned ones all the time. Arcades, too. I mean, what do kids nowadays have, huh? Chuck E. Cheese, I guess. Yeah, and Austin's, but who wants to go out to Pflugerville just to hang out? I just think a lot about it, you know? Not to sound like an old fogey, but I really do think it was better to be a kid when we were growing up. It was definitely easier, that's for sure. Kids these days are already worrying about shit like climate change by the time they're eight. Yeah, I know I was too, but that was for a science fair project, and I placed second citywide, so it was worth it.
Anyway, I got us a bag of corn. Humidity's not too bad today, so you wanna go down to Zilker Park and find some ducks to feed?

Will gladly be taking Texas recommendations if you're feeling it! Any tourist areas to restaurants (specifically beef if you can bec I've been meaning to try 👀)
I’ll be the first prideful Texan to admit that the only good part of Texas BBQ is our brisket (beef). Other states beat us on chicken and pork, if that’s more your style. But we know beef. God, uh, if you want good brisket specifically I’m going to recommend Black’s BBQ or Kreuz Market (which are actually both in Lockhart), Stiles Switch (BBQ). Of course, the best brisket is actually from some random friend of a friend of a friend of the family that just has the most insane brisket rub imaginable and they would kill to keep it a secret.
Austin-specific recommendations for food: Culinary Dropout (The Domain), Jardin Corona, Clay Pit, Quality Seafood, Dirty Martin’s, Top Notch, Home Slice Pizza, Kerbey Lane Cafe, Torchy’s (though that went from an Austin original to a chain real quick), Texas Chili Parlor (hear me out; the food isn’t what it used to be, but it’s the spot all the Texas legislators go to after session, so if you want a weirdly intimate knowledge of our state’s goings-on, it’s funny, however, legislature must be in session and Texas does not have a full-time legislature).
Austin-specific recommendations for visiting: Blanton Museum of Art, Texas Science & Natural History Museum, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, Mount Bonnell, seeing the bats fly out from under Congress Avenue Bridge at sundown (best in summer), walking South Congress Avenue, the Capitol Building, any of Austin’s hike & bike trails, kayaking or taking a paddle board down Lady Bird Lake (aka Town Lake), Zilker Park, and Austin’s biggest attraction for decades has been our live music scene once the sun goes down and the lights come out!

Travel guide for the US GP in Austin, TX
Going to the race in ATX and have some downtime during the weekend? Here are some tips from a local about how to enjoy the city on a budget.
So I thought it would be fun to spend a bit of time putting together a brief guide about low cost options of what to do in Austin if you have extra time over the weekend to spend in the city. Even if you're not going to the race, this is just a general guide to Austin so feel free to save this if you plan to travel here in the future.
My goal is to not recommend most of the generic things from travel sites and instead explain my favorite hotspots. I tried to include low cost things that don’t really require any preparation or reservations.
Please ask me you have more questions about places in ATX, I love answering.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
General tips
Avoid driving as much as you possibly can. Traffic here is insane. Public transportation in the city is lacking, so plan to spend extra time traveling. I recommend taking the busses. Yes there are also Lime scooters and bikes that you can ride.
Most restaurants offer live music in the evenings and I would recommend staying if you want to enjoy a bit of the city’s classic charm.
Rainey Street (an area with bars and food trucks) is amazing but if you choose to go, I do warn you that it might be really busy. Same with South Congress.
Parking is a nightmare so prepare for that. Again I recommend taking the bus (or Uber if it fits your budget). Download the CapMetro app on your phone.
Don’t go to Zilker Park unless you’re going for Austin City Limits. The festival is happening all weekend at the park and you need tickets.
Try out as many food trucks as possible. Almost all of them are delicious. They offer BBQ, tacos, Tex-Mex, a huge variety of international dishes, desserts, ice cream, etc.
Touristy things that are worth it (in my opinion)
Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail - perfect for the outdoors. Fun fact: Bottas went on a bike ride on some trails here during last year’s race, I bet he’ll do it again.
Barton Springs Pool - may be a bit chilly depending on the weather but worth it
SoCo (South Congress) - essentially a strip of shops, restaurants, etc. that are the heart of Austin
Swap the Mount Bonnell hike for the 360 Pennybacker Bridge outlook. Better views.
– Must Do’s –
6th Street - If you love nightlife or want to go clubbing or bar hopping, this is the place to be. I don’t have any specific recommendations because I guarantee you’ll end up having a great time.
Reminder: Drinking age is 21 here and every bar does check your ID so don’t think you can slip past if you’re not 21+.
Coffee shops and cafes - Similar to the 6th Street advice, you can’t go wrong with any coffee shop here, I promise. But a few of my favorites are:
Hank’s - boho aesthetic, lots of space indoors, also has good food
Easy Tiger - this place is a cafe, bakery, bar, and beer garden all in one
Mozart’s Coffee Roasters - Service isn’t always the best, but you make up for that with the incredible lake view. Worth it. They also offer live music in the evenings.
Cafe Medici - vibes and good drinks, you’ll also probably find lots of students here studying and enjoying a break from classes
Lucky Lab Cafe - There’s a location that’s by the university with an outdoor patio. If the day isn’t too hot, it’s nice to sit outside.
Austin City Limits - If you can find last minute tickets for a day, then I highly recommend it! The festival goes on the entire weekend so you can pick the day(s) you go.
Outdoor favorites. Be active. Take pictures. Enjoy life.
360 Bridge outlook - perfect photo spot, gorgeous view of the lake, preferably at sunrise or sunset
The Oasis - restaurant with the best views, about a 40 minute drive from downtown Austin
Nature Trails - Barton Creek greenbelt, Mount Bonnell (short hike with a view of Lake Austin), Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail (view of downtown Austin skyline)
Rowing Dock - offers paddleboard rentals if you want to glide down Lady Bird Lake see the downtown city skyline from the water
Lake Austin, Lake Travis, Lady Bird Lake
Eat food in beautiful places. Food here consists of mainly tacos, BBQ, and Tex-Mex. Enjoy it.
The County Line - great BBQ with a bonus of being by the lake
But stay away from BBQ places downtown like La Barbecue and Franklin’s which have long wait times.
The Oasis - Expensive/mediocre food, but gorgeous view of the lake at sunset
The Hula Hut - Tex-Mex and a bit of everything on the menu, by the lake. It’s super crowded but they have a bar area outside where you can seat yourself without waiting.
Chuy’s - the best Tex-Mex you’ll ever eat
Torchy’s Tacos - some of the best tacos in Austin
Jet ski or rent a boat on Lake Travis - if you love the water, head down to 360 bridge boat ramp and ask about rentals. This is the one thing that might require prior preparation, but I highly recommend it if you're able.
Mansfield Dam Park - great lake views, areas to hike and swim even if you don't have a boat. 45 minutes from downtown. $5 cash entrance fee per person.
There are so many more as well. Austin is a great city and you can't go wrong with any activity that you do.
