I've been resource gathering for YEARS so now I am going to share my dragons hoard
Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.
Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.
Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.
Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.
SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.
SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.
Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.
Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.
Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.
Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.
Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

There’s a protest going on against AI art over on artstation, so I feel like now is the time for me to make a statement on this issue!
I wholeheartedly support the ongoing protest against AI art. Why? Because my artwork is included in the datasets used to train these image generators without my consent. I get zero compensation for the use of my art, even though these image generators cost money to use, and are a commercial product.
Musicians are not being treated the same way. Stability has a music generator that only uses royalty free music in their dataset. Their words: “Because diffusion models are prone to memorization and overfitting, releasing a model trained on copyrighted data could potentially result in legal issues.” Why is the work of visual artists being treated differently?
Many have compared image generators to human artists seeking out inspiration. Those two are not the same. My art is literally being fed into these generators through the datasets, and spat back out of a program that has no inherent sense of what is respectful to artists. As long as my art is literally integrated into the system used to create the images, it is commercial use of my art without my consent.
Until there is an ethically sourced database that compensates artists for the use of their images, I am against AI art. I also think platforms should do everything they can to prevent scraping of their content for these databases.
Artists, speak out against this predatory practice! Our art should not be exploited without our consent, and we deserve to be compensated when our art is exploited for commercial use.

Quick Weekend Update:
I have overhauled the Inventory to look just a little nicer I think. My UI is still all over the place, I clearly haven't yet figured out a proper theme or style, though I like this a lot better.
Since my backgrounds are handdrawn I think it makes sense for my UI to also have that inky styling.
Tumblr media
I've also started developing an idea for an interactive menu in the game. This place is for the player to look "Inwards". Here, they might later be able to upgrade their skills or just be able to review what impact they've had on characters in the game.
Tumblr media
It still needs a lot of work but the general idea is this limbo-like space where gnarly trees uphold beating hearts - with fog and feather particle effects.
I've also just done some tiny fixes today, like:
Ensuring the function that allowed traders to randomize their inventory based on item type actually randomizes more than one item. It's still buggy though.
The menu for choosing how long to rest is now separated from the rest object so other objects will be able to call it in the future, and I'll be able to give it more elaborate styling.

can u explain why AI art is bad without fearmongering, moralizing or bootlicking lol
I'm going to answer in good faith, even though the tone you're using sounds like you're harboring anything but. The issue with AI art isn't specifically inherent to the tools used to produce it, because, ultimately, a tool is merely that: something devoid of will which, in the hands of a human, can produce a specific outcome. It's the human element that taints what we could otherwise enjoy for the unquestioningly fascinating topic that is AI art and, by extension, AI software as a whole.
Now, the problem isn't people, period, but the kind of people that are responsible for giving AI the bad rep it's been getting, along with the intent that goes into both the development of AI tools and the things produced by dint of said tools. I'm talking about the tech bros happily rubbing their hands, waiting to provide business moguls with a brand new means to commodify and mass-produce what artists stake their entire livelihoods upon, because when you have enough zeroes lined up in your bank account, your eyes are utterly blinded to the soul and personality that human beings put into their handiwork, and which a machine won't ever be able to reproduce no matter how much stolen art you feed it. Oh yeah, by the way, that's how AI art tools have been making the rounds: by chewing on thousands upon thousands of stolen pictures made by actual people so that they may learn how to ape someone's style and spit out absolutely soulless derivatives, while the original authors don't see a lick of recognition or monetary retribution for any of it. Do I need to tell you why stealing and parading someone else's art as your own is a terrible, vile thing to do?
But sure, you did ask me to refrain from "fearmongering, moralizing or bootlicking", which I guess I've already done. So since you'd rather I skipped straight to the point in a concise manner, lemme offer some quick examples of why the culture surrounding AI art has already developed into one of the most abysmally disappointing displays of how greed and an utter lack of human decency can ruin something objectively brimming with possibilities:
Less than a week after the sudden death of Korean artist Kim Jung-gi, someone trained an AI model to mimic his artstyle, having the audacity of asking for credits if anyone wished to use it. I sincerely hope I don't have to explain to you why this is a ghoulish example of the kind of tone-deafness sported by tech bros who buy wholesale into the AI art craze.
A piece of AI art was submitted to an art contest and won. The "artist"'s work amounted to little more than picking a series of prompts and letting the machine do the work. It's as much art as googling a smattering of terms and making a collage of pictures taken from Pinterest (and even then, you would have put more work into it than this person did). That they won at all says a whole damn lot about how abysmal the respect given to artists - real artists - nowadays is.
There are a multitude of people out there already selling prints of AI-generated art. I could link some of them here, but honestly, type "ai art prints" on a search engine and you'll get inundated by them. I've seen and personally know artists who have had to undersell their works because commissions were the only thin, frayed string they could hang on in hopes of making it through the week without fucking starving themselves, but here we are: any random asshole can now yell "MASSIVE BREASTS, THIN WAIST, COCKTAIL DRESS, HUGE BADONGAS" at a computer, let it mash together a trillion of other people's hard work, and print it for easy bucks that the actual authors of the basic ingredients of their insipid soup will never, ever see a dime of.
It really bothers me that you mentioned "no bootlicking". Whose fucking boots is this side of the debate supposedly tasting? That of the artists who post every day about how angry, sad and terrified they are by the prospects of what the development of AI art will entail for their livelihood and passion? What kind of gall did your mother birth you with that you have the spiteful spunk to type that word, when you've got shit like an artist who had their sketch stolen while they were drawing it on stream, then fed to an AI and posted by someone passing it off as their own art? How does that not ignite your indignation? "Bootlicking". Like anyone's tongues have been tasting leather but those of the same tech bro chodes who kept trying oh so hard to convince us NFTs were the future while ruining the environment to make the absolute stupidest point ever made in the history of humanity.

some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.

New Rooms! Trudging on with early game setup
Progress, I'd say, is slow but steady! I have made a few more rooms that I know will be essential to the early game narrative.
One of those rooms is the storage room. Here, the Player is gonna be able to pick up the oil lamp for the first time, after which the 'tutorial' is well and truly over, and our Player has to go out into the dark by himself.
This comes with a bit of a Puzzle where out helpful friend Edgar abandons us in a pitch black room by ourselves. Yay!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've made small further improvements to some of the cutscene scripts. Now I can decide how loudly to play sounds, which was a big issue in cutscenes before thanks to my un-levelled audio.
I've also fixed a small issue with the character movement script so characters besides the Player can be moved during cutscenes.
The puzzle in this room was very light-weight, so it's technically already functional but I'm planning to extend it and make it a lot bigger, I think.
The other thing I've done is worked up this prisoner in their prison:
Tumblr media
But I won't say much about them just yet ;)
In that room, I got to do some of my own sound effects and voice acting which turned out way better than I expected, and were really fun. I've also figured out a little script to play different bits of audio randomly throughout the scene, so it feels a little more alive. I did the same for the yard! Now that cutscenes are kinda super easy to use, I've been setting them up as I go so these rooms have slowly been drafting the early game story. I am still procrastinating from actually saving the game. One thing at a time!

New Player Sprite!
Tumblr media
Hello to the new followers! Thanks for checking out my progress with this game :D I’ve been busy this week, but to keep things a little more organized I’ll spread my progress updates over a few posts!
Let’s start with updates to the Player. I have now reworked with the look of the player entirely. That means a new walk animation, a new idle animation, and also first appearances of an actual lamp sprite in the player’s hand. I’ve also given him a new portrait to stand in for the ‘neutral’ pose now, and am trying to slowly increase the number of emotes available to him.
Tumblr media
I’m still trying to figure out a name for this character. I have most of the other main characters in the game down to a T, but this one has been a blank-slate player-insert for the longest time, and now that I am hoping to give him a voice the personality is slowly lagging after.
Good news is that I’ve done a lot of story-blocking this week. I now finally understand a proper beginning-middle and end, with four total arcs. I even know what will be revealed at which of these ‘chapters’, and have some clearer ideas of how I might be able to tell that story if all goes well.

If anyone fancies, please come and follow my progress with a new-old game project on my devlog blog!
I have gotten further with this so far than with anything ever before, and whilst that might not mean anything I’m very excited to share semi-regular progress.
First Puzzle drafted, assets expanding...
Tumblr media
It took me quite a while, but the nursery puzzle is now fully playable. There are a few quality of life upgrades it needs, but it works relatively smoothly and I was able to improve on other systems along the way. All of that will come in very useful! The atmosphere at the end when all the children are asleep is also actually quite nice, with a music box playing faintly in the background…
Tumblr media
In other news, I added a bunch of new assets, including furniture and a few more portraits to give dialogues a bit more substance.
I’ve drafted the library room, although I expect this to change significantly if a puzzle might be hosted there later. The test-hallways are linked up with all the rooms now, and doors that are faced from the up-side down now fade in to show where they are. Still need to find a better indicator for side-facing doors.
I have not yet managed to figure out a shader to improve the lighting. After I tried that and thoroughly messed everything up, I appreciate how things are looking at the moment! XD I also still need to find a way to handle interactions when two interaction hitboxes overlap…
