A Brief Pondering Upon Adaptations Between Two Types of Media, Specifically Focusing on Kaiju No. 8
If you’re anime only, I’m probably not going to spoil much, but I promise nothing, so click under that Read More at your own discretion.
I have been reading the Kaiju No. 8 manga since it was first released, and I am thrilled it has made it to the point of an anime adaptation. To see the action brought to life is great.
It’s sort of a comfort food story for me. It’s not particularly groundbreaking for the most part, but the characters all have something relatable, and I genuinely want to see them succeed.
It’s a story about goals and dreams. Sometimes we have to reassess them. Sometimes we have to settle for only a part of what we originally wanted. Sometimes our situation changes in ways we never would have anticipated. Sometimes the limits that make things harder are restrictions we created ourselves. Sometimes that altered goal is just as satisfying, if we choose to keep going.
I’m also enjoying watching the show as it airs weekly. There’s a certain nostalgia to having a whole week to think about what came before and what might be next. It also airs on Saturday mornings for me, which is even more nostalgic.
Back to two kinds of media.
Manga pacing is rooted in having a specific amount of page space to tell a portion of the story. If you want to use a dramatic double-page spread of an important scene, you have to economize space elsewhere. You can have little written notes throughout or at the end to give extra details. Because the images are frozen in time, they can be combed through for background details. Motion is implied in specific ways.
Anime has similar restrictions, but instead of physical space, it’s about time. What may take multiple panels of manga to show may be only a few seconds animated. Certain levels of detail have to be sacrificed in order to facilitate fluid motion in a reasonable way. Somebody has to decide what everyone sounds like, and it definitely won’t be the same way every individual reader imagined the voices.
Each form of media is a different beast, and when the original source has been around for a while, the adaptation has to balance drawing in new audiences unfamiliar with the source while not boring the established fans by over explaining.
It’s been entertaining to see new fans theorize wildly about things I already know the explanations for as well as hear ideas about things that still haven’t been revealed.
Some of the image choices in the opening in particular seem to have drawn a lot of attention. Personally, my interpretation of the vial is that it’s one of the ammunition canisters used for the defense force weapons. Most of the imagery is about cycles. It represents humans using kaiju remains to improve their weapons, in turn encouraging the kaiju to evolve to be more resilient, and repeat. Don’t let my opinion spoil anyone else’s musings, though!
I feel like in this case, the anime team decided to lean more toward the established fan end of the balance. There are some world building details that are not explained more than glancingly in the anime. I feel like that’s contributing to confusion on the part of some newer fans. Having info from the manga definitely makes a few things easier to follow.
I hope viewers stick around. I could babble for hours about this series, and I’d love to see it do well.

Be the change you want to see in the world. o7
the barren wasteland that is the kaiju no. 8 tag on AO3, specifically the lack of kafka-focused fics, has inspired me to write the longest fanfiction ive ever made before.
ive only got 3 out of the planned 14 scenes done so far and the word count is already 5.6k. wish me luck o7

Why shred my old receipts when I cant forget they’re in my back pocket and turn them into paper pellets after a trip through the washer and dryer?
Truly, forgetting to empty your pockets before doing laundry is a lifelong issue.

Playing with strangers online makes me utterly furious sometimes, so I’m gonna rant and probably no one will read it.
A Luigi’s Mansion 3 Scarescraper Primer
If someone else is stuck, help them. Truly, we have all rounded a corner and been stuck in a rug or opened a fake door while the lights were out. Be kind.
The toads can walk on their own. You do not need to suction them up. Don’t be the person who loses your team the floor because time ran out while you were trying to shoot a toad at the transport screen. If they’re freaking out in the hall, it means there’s a possessed trashcan somewhere.
On every fifth floor, don’t take more than a couple minutes looking for charge ups if someone already found the key. Yes, they help, but if we only have 20 seconds left, they won’t help enough.
If you find a key and can see where it goes, use it. Trust me, it will save time later.
If everyone else is on the green pad calling you over, just join the group. Please. “BuT tHerE’S sTilL OthEr sTufF!” No. You are wasting time. Unless you’re in the middle of catching ghosts, go join the group.
For the love of everyone’s continued patience, stand on the green pad and then summon your Gooigi. If one of you isn’t on there, it won’t work.
Only the red and purple ghosts can be team caught. If you try to “help” on any other ghosts, it’ll interrupt someone else, and that’s kinda rude.
Well, I feel better now that that’s out of my system.

No need to ask for permission, but I’d be thrilled to see a picture of the final result.
saw a post this morning that got me thinking about bookbinding and the inherently transformative and collaborative nature of fandom, so:
edit: i guess i should have clarified: hand-bound books for PERSONAL use, not for profit or resale! i think that's something obvious to me as a bookbinder but not to writers/artists so i thought i'd clarify
