HOW TO BREAK YOUR READER: EP 2
✩°。⋆⸜ 🎧✮ EPISODE 2:HOW TO BREAK YOUR READER BY A PLOT
TAGS: @chocobeese @reyna-obsessed @periwinkle-the-11th @loife1m @mxnkeydo @auttumnsayshi @summersblooms @aylin-hijabi @yourtwistedlies (if you want to be added, plz dm me or send an ask. if you want to be removed, dm me or send an ask.)
*taps mic* Hello, writer friends! Thanks for being here today <33 welcome to the second episode of HOW TO BREAK A READER. ignore how I haven't been regular at all Today, we will be exploring a plot process which is guaranteed to make your reader cry. This only works for some types of characters, but it’s alright–I can help you adjust it.
The best way to explain is to break it down into pointers:
1-> YOUR CHARACTER’S MORALS
Your character’s morals.I have only one question, does your character accept help easily, or does it not? And other than that, what are the morals of the character, the things that matter the most to them? To demonstrate, let me pick up some random character and assign some morals:
My character’s name is Alessia. Her morals are that she should never settle for something less, she should be able to have a control over her decisions/
I am guessing your character has even more morals, but I’m just going to come up with two to set the stage.
Got your morals in your hand? Superb. We can move on to the next step.
2-> SOMETHING THAT THE CHARACTER DESPERATELY WANTS
So, I’ll cover emotions in a book in another time in the ‘PROSE PERFECTION’ series (episode 1 of prose perfection is released here.)But here is a rough rundown: it has to be something that connects with the character, that could solve all their problems or grant all their wishes. It could be both as well. To create something like that, you should think of 3 things:
WHY DOES MY CHARACTER HAVE ___ PROBLEMS?
HOW CAN I SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS?
WHAT IS THE SPECIFIC THING THAT COULD SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS?
 Here are my answers, Alessia wants to leave her native homeland since she hates it.
BECAUSE SHE NEVER SETTLES FOR SOMETHING LESS
SHE CAN MOVE TO A FOREIGN LAND
A VISA, A PASSPORT, AND MONEY.
Of course, your character could have something more philosophical, but the same questions apply there.
3-> AN EVENT THAT CONFLICTS WITH THE MORALS
This is the absolute breaker. Your character wants something really badly. Good news: they can have it. Bad news: they have to let go of their morals or beliefs. This event has to seem small or insignificant to other people, but to this character, this is like breaking them.
For Alessia, this would be her parents deciding for her to get married to a foreign man who wants a housewife, and she does want to leave her country, but the man isn’t her choice. The man is also reported to be quite controlling and is expecting someone obedient (idk bro, just trust me), and she’s giving away her morals.
4-> THE CHARACTER GIVES UP HER MORALS
The character gives up their morals, and agrees to do the event because the want that thing that badly. No one gives the character a second glance, but you want them to be warring inside, and trying to tell themselves, “it’s okay, we’re getting what we want…right?”
5-> WHAT THE CHARACTER WANTED IS SCRAPPED OUT OF THE EVENT
MUAHAHAHA.  we are done. What the character wanted out of the conflict–what they gave up their morals for is scrapped out. Now, they’re stuck. This is so, so amazing, and so, so great. Give me a second while I laugh at the character’s depression.
MAUAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
So, yeah. This is the smallest of plot serieses that you can do to add some drama and tears into the story, but I wouldn’t tell this is as a main plot, more of a side plot, to be honest. Alright–see you all in the next episode <33

PROSE PERFECTION: EP 1
✩°。⋆⸜ 🎧✮ EPISODE 1: LIKE CHARACTER, LIKE PROSE
TAGS: @chocobeese @reyna-obsessed (please dm me or send an ask if you want to be added to the tag list, you will be updated each time a new episode releases for this series :D)
*taps mic* Hello, writer friends! Thanks for being here today <33 welcome to the first episode of PROSE PERFECTION. Today, we will be exploring how to write prose which differs from each character, giving the character a unique voice. This especially helps the people who have multiple POVS in their writing, but it helps flesh out single POV as well!
I have decided to effectively break it down to a few pointers:
1-> NAILING DOWN THE CHARACTER’S PERSONALITY
This is extremely important when it comes to wanting to write prose that feels like a character. We want to have the personality turned inside out, so that we can choose the best words for each line.
You would want to know:
-how they look at the world,
- how they feel about certain things that occur in the book
-and what they show to others and what they keep to themselves.
When you know these five things, along with their basic traits, you can start filling out character sheets. You can find them online for free, I’m pretty sure there are a couple of templates on tumblr as well.
Character sheets really help you determine if you really know your character, and to dwell on the things you don’t. Once you have completed the sheet, we know for sure that you have the character fleshed out and ready.
2-> CHOOSING WORDS
Something you would want for character related prose is to have a specific set of words that you always go back to. I’m not saying that we’re going to repeatedly use these words for the entirety of the story, it’s just good to have a base.
For example, my character’s name is Alessia. She absolutely despises her country , and has repeatedly tried to leave with no success. She is also madly in love with a guy called Nathan, who does not support her leaving her homeland. She pretends to love her country in front of Nathan, but secretly hates it.
A few words that I get from this extremely short and vague backstory is: oppressed, secretive, devoted, etc, etc, I can’t get anything because I just created this character just now, but hopefully you have more words than me.
Now, we’re going to be thinking through the character’s eyes. How would she describe her world—maybe with: dark, cruel, grimey, controlling, disgusting…
and maybe for words we can start with some substitutes such as:
walking–trudging (because trudging is taking heavy, slow steps)
a low light alley– dimly (because it means dingy)
smell–stench
Now, we can use some synonyms and some more polished and detailed words to describe some daily actions (which is her ‘world or setting’). For instance, instead of simply saying, "She walked down the street," we can use more specific words that align with the character's perspective.
 Considering Alessia's negative view of her surroundings, we could describe her walking down the street as:
"Alessia trudges through the dimly-lit alley, surrounded by the suffocating stench of decay. Oh, how she yearns to leave, and step into a fresh patch of grass, with dew and flowers hanging by.”
or something like that. Just some words that have some more negative impact instead of walking, and show hesitancy and disgust. I contrast it with something that she does like, but it's very direct. The first sentence indirectly conveyed how much she hated the world.
3->UTILISING DIALOGUE AND THOUGHTS
A very short pointer, but something I really want to add is that adding little gestures when you’re in another character’s POV is very important, flickering of eyes, a voice tinged with something the POV character cant identify..etc.
4->CONSISTENCY
lastly, to truly master writing prose that reflects each character's voice, it takes practice and consistency. As you write and revise your story, pay attention to the language you use for each character. continuously ask yourself if their words and thoughts align with their personality, experiences, and motivations. consistency is key. make sure that the character's unique voice remains consistent throughout the story, allowing readers to truly connect with them and differentiate them from other characters.
5->HELP
I understand that finding these words might be hard, so I suggest looking for synonyms of words to find the right one, or looking at ‘different ways to describe __’ on google. This will help you get the baby steps, and soon you will get used to it.
these pointers should help you write prose according to a character. I hope this helps you. thanks for joining us in this episode, see you in the next one!

HOW TO BREAK YOUR READER: EP 1
✩°。⋆⸜ 🎧✮ EPISODE 1: HOW TO BREAK YOUR READER BY A FIGHT
TAGS: @chocobeese @reyna-obsessed (if you want to be added, plz dm me or send an ask. if you want to be removed, dm me or send an ask.)
*taps mic* Hello, writer friends! Thanks for being here today <33 welcome to the first episode of HOW TO BREAK A READER. Today, we will be exploring how to evoke emotions from the reader, by having a fight between two characters.
I have decided to effectively break it down into these pointers–
1-> BUILDING UP TENSION TO THE FIGHT
Before we give the shock, we want to give them the fear. when two characters the readers extremely love, and also ship very much (it could be a platonic ship as well) start to have small little bickers. if your ship is an enemy to lovers, your reader wouldn’t suspect much, so you have to show how upset it makes your character.
you want them to avoid each other, reducing screen time of the characters together that if the reader doesn’t pick up on it, let some of the side characters to. show how your character replays the small bickers a lot, to show the affects. and if your novel is a romance novel, its a good time to start your side story while your character avoids the love interest, or show them bumping into each other and ignoring each other.
2-> THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THOSE 2 CHARACTERS.
Having a fight between your characters has to be unusual, taking the reader aback. Having two characters who already hate each other fight may give some emotional satisfaction or the signal for the readers to kick back and eat popcorn, but we’re looking for tears.
The best thing to do is to go ahead and give a fight between two people who usually get along. and ‘get along’ can’t be just mutuals, it should be two people who have a deep and happy relationship, and also extremely close. bonus points if one of them is the person who is the most optimistic of the bunch.
fights should be unusual, now we have the shock factor. The shock has started, and the tears will follow.
3-> THE EVENTS OF THE FIGHT
Here comes the big break. the fight. Now this is where you have to make everyone crack into pieces. there has to be tears, and each one of the characters shouting about their feelings. if it’s a physical fight, add some emotional narrative such as:
Bob slammed his knife into Josh’s stomach, plunging through the flesh. This wretched creature–always thinking he’s the best–
You have to make sure the reader sees both sides of the story by the characters yelling, and maybe some child or innocent character tries to break the fight up. if the characters ignore the child, let them continue, with occasional interferences. There has to be someone holding someone back, and some people cheering on the fight. There has to be tears in their eyes. You have to show the cracks in their voices.
The best way to end is one character just leaving, and the other still angry, and too emotionally charged to care. that’s it, your fight’s over (its a cliche way though) or, both of them scream about something close to the character, and it makes one character freeze. That they just give up about the fight. such as:
“I wish I never met you!” Alessia screams into the void. Silence. Only the heavy breaths of Nathan echoing through the air. Nathan freezes, and like a movie, he starts replaying again. Alessia’s breath catches as his fury morphs into sadness.
“Okay.” And he leaves the room.
“We’re done!” Alessia calls, anger filling her blood once again. How can he just–turn her back on her? This is all his fault–
There is no response, just the nasal sniffles from Gianna.
( a weak example, but I don't do romance 🤡 )
4-> CONSEQUENCES OF THE FIGHT
it’s over. you have cracked your reader, but now you want them to cry. you don’t want them to talk for days, the side characters giving dirty looks, and the character crying because they messed up. you want regret and remorse.
it will hurt the reader more if the pair had some plans ahead and one character goes and waits for them in the venue, but the other never comes. and then perhaps another fight for that. That is the confrontation. All of this is optional, of course. there are two paths:
A. THE CHARACTERS NEVER TALK AGAIN.
Easy. Make them ignore each other, and the book ends, with remorse and regret, it never gets past the finish line. You can make this part of the personal growth of the character, developing a bit more.
B. THE CHARACTERS MAKE UP.
This. for this, I suggest a confrontation of the two characters once again, or one character begging the other to just talk to them, or one character getting hurt and–
There are many options and choices you can make. But overall, this should give some distress to your readers, as well as some sadness. Maybe even some tears.
That's it for today. Thank you for joining us on this episode. See you in the next one!
