“Thank you so much, Inspector Ingleton. I look forward to working with you.” Perrine says as she takes Pembrooke’s hand and gives a firm shake, delighted to be accepted.

“I look forward to it as well.” he says as he rises to his feet.  “I can likely give you a quick tour of the place…though some parts are going to have to wait for the last bit of background clearances.  Procedure stuff.  But! I can at least show you the important places like the main offices, the cells, garage, the break-room with all the goodies…sadly there is no more tiger on the tour…that will have to wait till the dormitory tour. Hee hee hee…” The way he says it sounds like he’s joking and yet… Pembrooke gets up and starts leading Perrine through the corridors, pointing out some of the various doors as confiscated goods, some of the labs, the gun range, the kennels and the stables and such.  Considering the background check he had seen so far, the inspector was pretty confident she wasn’t an agent for one of the gangs looking to get a scope on the building.  Either that, or she was impeccably good at her job so kudos. At some point he’d show her to the requisition room to help grab a few uniforms.  “I realize you’ll be undercover most times, but never hurts to have one and a badge just in case you know miss…” there is a pause as the name eludes him.  “I meant to ask, do you have a preference for how you’d like to be called.  Or have you considered a cover name while on the clock?”

Perrine scans the papers, making sure to be as thorough as she can with it and nods. All the basic stuff, sounds good, no problem. She’s sure she can handle such a job, otherwise she wouldn’t have applied for it in the first place.

But oh! A dormitory sounds rather interesting.

“A dorm, huh?” She says. If sensitive information is what she’ll be dealing with, then having a sort of second home where she can keep all that separate from her personal life sounds perfect. Perrine skims through the documents and finally looks up,

“I’d like that! I feel like that might help me be more organized with my work. Not to mention, a nice way to get to know fellow officers as well.” She says with a smile.

He nods. “The idea for the dormitory was one part safety in numbers in a location we can secure…but also to sort of help bridge comradely and friendships between officers.  I suppose it is a hopeful optimism on my part, but I imagine being able to see one’s fellows officers as friends and not just the coworker you see two hours a day will help forge bonds.” A pause.  “The organization aspect is rather helpful too.  Especially for officers who deal with undercover operations.  In any event, I highly recommend having a small unit for a just in case.” Organizing the papers, the inspector gives a warm smile.  “We can work out some schedules since you mentioned an interest in keeping your mail-work employment as well.  And start setting you up in the system.  Chances are your first few weeks are going to be rather boring…” as he says this, he knocks on the wooden desk.  “…will likely just have you work alongside other agents as you get used to everything.” With that, he stretches out his hand to her.  “That all said, welcome aboard! If you have any questions yourself, by all means ask away.”

Perrine listened intently as Pembrooke explained and nods. She can see how being a civilian dressed officer can ease her into working with the law, and is she could continue doing her deliveries as well then she had no complaints whatsoever.

“I can work with that, inspector.” She says, “Sounds like a good way for me to get started and learn the ropes.”

Perrine thinks hard on Pembrooke’s question, tapping lightly on her cup. “As for martial expertise, I’ve taken martial arts classes before if that counts. I assure you, I didn’t apply for the job without preparing any means of self defense training. ”

“Excellent.  I expect that will be a good start, most things can be learned and practiced upon as you go.”   Pulling out some papers, Pembrooke slides them over to her.  They look like what one would expect in regards to a job contract.  Some non-disclosure agreements that pretty much equate to ‘keep cases confidential, don’t tell the press things without permission, if you get caught accepting bribes or telling case secrets that’s going to be real bad k’.  Things one would expect from a job that involves very sensitive information. “There will likely be a couple entrance tests. Mostly physical tests like running an obstacle course and getting looked over by a doctor for a clean bill of health.  As well as some basic codes of conduct and rules.  Though I expect that will not be that much of a surprise.” You hold out another paper. “An optional thing for you to consider is if you would prefer to live within a dormitory set up for the local law enforcement.  It comes as part of your officer package, though I will understand since you are doing more covert work if you would rather not live in Cop Central.  The option will remain open to you should you ever desire it.  It was established to try to make a secure location for officers to reside in.”

What if you knew there was something dangerous in an unopened letter or package you were to deliver?

Well that’s easy, I simply won’t deliver it. Despite my pledge as a mail carrier to deliver.

Though if anything, being able to know if a package contained a dangerous item makes my job a little easier. Postal inspections are a tedious process, you see. But necessary for safety reasons.

What would happen is that the dangerous package will be confiscated and/or destroyed. I would even file a report to the authorities regarding such a package if need be.
