Wood Warping and Flying Brooms

Back in the day before Air Control was a thing flutes had this little quirk where they would sound different depending on the weather and season. This is becuase in hotter weather the wood would warp changing the shape thus changing the sound. Now Metal flutes were also a thing as well but would also experience warping. This is why a lot of instruments require specific storage conditions.

So what if it applied to brooms?

What if during the summer you got longer, looser, and slippier, control(Such as most turns ending up with more drift) but faster speed while in colder weather maybe things got more tighter?

Maybe some broom brands look to counteract this with built in heating and freezing charms? But in turn maybe the wood chips and looses it's enchantments faster causing more flying issues.

Or how about some brooms try less of a spell solution and more enchantments; carving out the middle to carves small runes for more stabilizing enchantments that would belong inside houses, then sealing up the inside hoping that it'll keep shape from inside to out?

This might cause other issues such as weight and doesn't deal with warping on the outside which could affect shape thus doesn't maximize the efficiency.

You could counter act that by making the runes 3d through metal castings(Like letter magnets but for magic symbols) that are then put down in interlocking order to make only certain runes interact with each other in the desired way? But then you might have to worry about the runes themselves warping or again, the weight issues. Plus the upkeep of the inners could pose a challenge for far less experienced broom riders and owners.

Some perhaps look at flutes for a solution, ending up with a glass handle broom? A cool design for the more fancy acrobatic type. This however could cause many problems, as sitting on heated glass or crystal in the summer is Not Great.

Well you could always put the crystal or glass as the base of the broom and then added wooden "furniture" for better writing.

But if you play Quidditch then this becomes a hazard. Instead of snapping due to hitting a blunder the broom would shatter. The shards could get caught in the wounds and while magical healing can fix up the wounds themselves the removal of shards is not part of standard healing. You better hope the following 'Accio Glass Shards' doesn't cause so many cuts that you're dead before the healing spells and potions can be given to you and work their magic.

Maybe that's what the different brands fight over, why some have preferences to certain kinds of brooms, why some might be cheaper than others outside of some just being "Newer Brooms".

one of the v. important things the movies missed about ron is just like, how down to fight he was at all times. like not even duel just he was always ready to physically beat the shit out of people who insulted his family or friends and WOULD if no one stopped him.

there are so many points in the books where its just casually dropped in ‘and so Harry and/or Hermione had to physically restrain Ron’ usually from Malfoy but if Harry or Hermione weren’t paying attention it became ‘and so Ron punched Malfoy in the face’. 

Like, Ron cursing Malfoy for calling Hermione Mudblood wasnt just a one off thing like every time he did that in the future when Ron was there it was like ‘ron had to be stopped from ending Malfoy’s life’ just thrown in there. Same for any other severe insults.

My absolute favorite instance of this is in the first book when they’re just watching a Quidditch game and Malfoy just starts bothering Ron and Hermione during it and is finally like ‘man its pretty funny how the Gryffindor quidditch team is recruited based on pity like y’know Potter has no parents, Weasley’s brothers have no money they should include Longbottom for having no brains” and Ron just flings himself at Malfoy and starts punching him and rolling around under the bleachers and Neville is like “uh shit i guess i better fight CRABBE AND GOYLE BOTH AT ONCE so they don’t go after him” (very underrated moment of courage from Neville he knew he had no chance but he just went for it honestly almost more impressive than confronting Voldemort in book 7)

and they’re just fighting for like twenty minutes and Hermione doesn’t even notice because she was so focused on tuning Malfoy out and watching the game and when its over she looks around like “where’d ron go” and then later its mentioned “Harry sees Ron and his face is covered in blood and he’s like “GOOD JOB WINNING THE GAME HARRY I GAVE MALFOY A BLACK EYE SO WE BOTH DID GREAT THINGS TONIGHT oh btw i have detention for a week and neville’s unconcious but they say he’ll be fine”.

Ron is ride or die and will fight u for $0 y’all

I've had like 200 words of this written for like literal months just sitting there mocking me but i finally got it to something I'm happy with!

Oliver wasn't sure when it happened exactly– Maybe it’s just always been there simmering under the surface waiting for him to notice it. If only he had done so sooner. Percy has always been fun to be around in his opinion, them being the only two Gryffindor boys in their year would of course lead to them getting to know one another fairly well.

It’s not until Clearwater joins the picture that he starts to understand what he’s really feeling but by then it’s too late. Oliver shakes his head in an attempt to clearer his thoughts. It’s not even like he particularly dislikes Penelope because he doesn't. She’s nice, intelligent, even funny, having that dry sense of humour that Percy has but that’s just it isn't it? She’s perfect for him isnt she? 

Watching them interact, Oliver can see it clearly. The way she seems to hold Percy’s attention like a light would a moth. The way she seems to enjoy listening to him speak–like Oliver does and he can’t hate her as much as he would love to. Instead he throws himself into quidditch to avoid thinking about the pain in his chest everytime Percy speaks of her with that gentle smile on his face.

Hence why he’s currently sitting on his broom and circling the quidditch pitch as fast as he can manage. In a desperate plea to take his mind off it. Feeling the sun on his skin and the wind in his hair he can at least pretend he’s happy.

Weeks and then months go by like this. Weeks of Percy rarely being around the dorm. Months where Oliver knows where he is and wishes he didn't. Oliver never says anything about it to him, it's not right for him to. It’s not Percy’s fault Oliver’s a jealous prat. Percy seems happy, really happy and Oliver wouldn't dare do something that might change that. He will always support him–even if he feels like he’s breaking inside.

When near the end of the year Penny gets petrified Oliver is there for him. Staying by his side as much as possible, holding him in his arms as he cried quietly. When mere hours later Ginny was taken into the chamber Oliver helped him send letters. When after Penny was cured and Percy went right back to her side it still hurt but the unnecessary little thank you gifts Percy would leave for him left him feeling light. Little notes here and there, small trinkets he saw at the odd shop in town. Small things Oliver would treasure as much as his broom.

During one letter over the summer Percy told him that Penny and him broke up. 

‘She needs to focus on herself after what happened and I do as well.’  

Laid out in front of him in Percy’s neat script. Oliver was conflicted. 

Happy that it was over. 

Happy that his last year with Percy won’t include him laying in bed, wishing Percy was around.

Happy that his best friend got hurt– and that's just it isn’t it? That's not an okay way to feel, at least that's what Oliver thinks. 

Sending a letter back is harder that time. Finding the words to say that don’t immediately out his horrible thoughts. Percy’s smart he could see right through him if he wanted too. So he tried his best to be supportive. To not give too much away about his real thoughts on it and once it was sent went right back outside to get back into the air. 

When school started back up again he thought it would be easier. That he would tell him the truth. That’s not what happens though. Everytime he tries during those first few weeks something stops him. 

The twins interrupt them.

He looks at Percy’s face and sees how dark under his eyes are.

One time a dementor even just came around the corner leading to an impassioned speech from Percy about how dangerous the school has gotten.

Not exactly the best time to look at your best friend and tell them how in love with them you are.

So he just doesn’t… and in a flash their last year passed him by in a state of simple indulgences. Oliver taking small touches whenever he could manage it. 

Pulling Percy into hugs whenever he seemed to need it. Listening to him talk on and on about how little the teachers are telling them about Sirius Black. Holding him when Ron ended up in the hospital wing again. 

He’ll always be there for him no matter what else may change, that never will. 

Even without words he surely knows that right?

I've been claiming that I would Make a Percy clay sculpture for a few months and finally got the itch to do it!

He's not perfect And as weird as it sounds i think i like the wip more even if hes naked faces just hate me sadjhfksdjh

His eyes were easy enough since i got these little eye sticker things specifically made for working with clay that are very nice and i really like them though i did have to repaint them because Percy to me just has blue eyes and the only ones in the right size I had were brown but i think it worked ok

but def a learning curve with them because they are not as easy to use as I thought they'd be

also doing a mouth tried to kill me i wanted to give him the typical like lopsided o mouth i normally give him in picrews but i just couldn't manage it g;h'g[;h

anyway overall probs my favorite clay piece i've ever made but It might just be because its Percy

Pre- perciverus body swap au

But like it's not all three of them

Like just two of them switching body's leading to the third losing their mind(horny)

ok so like 12 hours later but

Specifically this morning my brain was thinking about Marcus and Percy switching with Perciver already being a thing

and it being what leads to Oliver and Marcus happening because talking to him with Percy's face causes the initial "I want to fucking punch you" initial feels to not be as strong

as well as when they hang out together (because this lasts like a week) Percy keeps accidently acting the same as he always does when alone with Ollie by habit and it's making Oliver's head spin because yes it's his boyfriend but it's also not his boyfriend

Meanwhile Marcus is is losing his mind for very different reasons

namely does breaking a vow of chastity for your future wife count if you are not even in your own body? on top of his continuing spiral of internalized homophobia and god Percy is pretty and Wood keeps acting fucking weird and him blushing is making his chest feel weird and he hates it but in Percy's body he can't fight him (more like Oliver refuses)

Anyway!

i can't remember anything else i thought about this

A Pre-Perciverus scenario where they have to take a professional style photo together for some reason or another that i don't care to invent

where they have to be like dressed up and stuff point is as their standing in front of the camera Marcus's tie is messed up so Percy fixes it for him because obv they're both in this photo and if Marcus looks bad it will make Percy look bad too but fixing it makes Oliver feel jealous which is made worse by Marcus looking at him challengingly over Percy's head leading to Oliver messing up his own tie and hair in an attempt to get attention too

Which does work because then Percy turns to him and exasperatedly fixes him too even if he's now a little peeved that neither of them seem to have taken this seriously before turning back towards the camera all the while the other two are glaring and flipping each other off before actually standing still for the photo

Point is this event is now what the new photo repeats over and over because I think its fun
