HOMERIC HYMNS TO APOLLO
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How, then, shall I sing of you who in all ways are a worthy theme of song? For everywhere, O Phoebus, the whole range of song is fallen to you, both over the mainland that rears heifers and over the isles. All mountain-peaks and high headlands of lofty hills and rivers flowing out to the deep and beaches sloping seawards and havens of the sea are your delight. Shall I sing how at the first Leto bare you to be the joy of men, as she rested against Mount Cynthus in that rocky isle, in sea-girt Delos -- while on either hand a dark wave rolled on landwards driven by shrill winds -- whence arising you rule over all mortal men?

The Book of Druidry by Kristoffer Hughes
Tumblr media
This book is PACKED with information. There is just so much. And it's got a bunch of question and answer sections to fill out inside so it kind of functions as a beginner druid workbook and text. The author's background is primarily Welsh but also OBOD trained. I picked this specific title because my ancestry is Welsh and that's how I wanted to approach this subject. So if you're looking for Irish or generic Celtic this isn't the book for you.
I'm going to try and give an overview of some of the chapters but some are a bit hard to explain out of context so I'll mostly be doing the easier to explain bits. There's a fair amount of mythology mentioned, mostly The Mabinogi and it's various branches.
The history of druids is touched on, but resource book lists are in the back for greater historical details if you want them. Traditional druid orders often have various levels typically makes bards, ovates, and druids. The differences are explained. There is a whole section on if it's relevant to be a druid today.
A chapter on triads as it's a reoccurring theme in Druidry. The chapter on the concept of Awen (a passive creative force in the universe) was quite illuminating. The section on ancestry was dutifully read by me despite thinking it had no relevance, and Hughes was the first author to change my mind on that. It was thought provoking as someone with abusive family as far as the eye can see.
We come next to deities, devotion, offerings, and basically all things worship. I'm still flailing around blindly in this area but it gave me things to think about. A chapter most interesting to the skeptics among us entitled the art and science of magic comes next.
Chapters on some more typical topics like the seasons/holidays, meditation, prayer, ritual, and so on fill out the latter half of the book. A druid question and answer sections comes before the conclusion of this book. A multitude of appendixes including Welsh pronunciation (highly appreciated), glossary, suggested reading and research, bibliography, and index take up the last 40 pages or so. And a small area at the back for notes.
Overall I really like this book with a few caveats. My main issues would be the use of Aleister Crowley as a source a couple of times and the use of the word shaman (once I think) with various European practices. So like, not great but not super awful, and it took half the book to see more than one thing I was not thrilled with.
I actually ended up flagging whole chapters to go back to and make notes about verses a typical book where I might flag a small section or specific spell. There was a lot of material meant to make you contemplative your own ideas about things and I'm definitely planning to do that. I think we have a new addition to my favorite witchy books list.
I also ended up actually using the resource sections in the back and doing research on various local (on my continent at least) druid orders and curriculum they offer for study. I think I actually ended up cobbling together my own personal course of study that's pretty comprehensive. I did end up modifying the physical tasks and things I know I won't necessarily be able to do, or made them more flexible because I have a sun allergy and develop heat stroke at the drop of a hat. But overall I was really pleased with the ideas I was able to gather and I'm interested to implement them. This book has given me a lot to think about.

Other people have these elaborate rituals around their tarot cards. Like you have to consecrate them before you use them. Sleep with them under your pillow. Smoke cleansing... So many things.
Whereas I get them from the mail, check them to make sure all the cards are there and everything is in good shape. And then immediately start using them. Yes, even if I trade them and they were used by someone else.
I've never done anything at all to my cards. And I've never had even the slightest issue. Like I find the idea of 'bonding' with cards interesting I guess in theory? But in practice I just... Use them. Is this my bonding? I don't know. 🤣

daily practice ⋆·˚ ༘ *
❃゜・。. ・°゜✼ ゜°・ . 。・゜❃・。. ・°゜✼ ゜°・ . 。・゜❃
the act of daily practice if often very misunderstood. a daily practice does not mean to do spells and rituals every single day in order to be a witch. it is not necessary for a daily practice to be huge or something specifically special.
you may even find yourself so distant from your craft that you put it on pause for weeks, yeah even months. does this make you any less of a witch? does this make you any less powerful? no, absolutely not!
we are human beings. it is absolutely normal to put certain things last, especially when there are more important things for you at the time. perhaps you can't practice witchcraft while studying for exams or during stressful and difficult times. or you just can't bring yourself to practice it for no specific reason at all.
just know that this is so damn normal. you should never feel bad about yourself for pausing your craft. there might be a reason for that you don't yet understand! so don't push yourself too hard.
a way to keep the magic in your life, even after pausing your craft for a while, is by incorporating daily practices into your everyday-routine, even when you're still practicing actively at the moment.
now what does daily practice mean?
daily practices are the things you do on a daily basis, regularly. we'll soon get to how some of these practices can look like.
it can help you to stay in touch with your craft, with your power, you spirit guides, deities, etc. even on days you're not drawn to do actual magical rituals—which is NORMAL and absolutely OKAY.
a few examples of daily practices:
1. stirring intentions in your drinks and foods
2. wearing crystals
3. enchant your jewelry and wear it
4. dress according to today's planet ruler
5. put spell oils on your body or clothes
6. use glamour magic (this can be as simple as drawing sigils or runes on your face with your moisturizer or makeup)
7. light an ancestor, deity or spirit guide candle (if you have one)
8. divination

Does anyone have any book recommendations on solar and lunar magic? I tried Diana Ahlquist’s Moon Magic and really didn’t connect with it. I’ve got a few titles picked out to potentially try (though books on sun magic seem to be pretty limited), but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations before I commit to buying anything.
From looking at reviews and reading the samples online, I’m thinking of trying:
Moonology by Yasmin Boland
Moon Magick by DJ Conway
Beneath the Moon by Rachel Patterson
Sun Magic by Rachel Patterson
Let me know if anyone has any other suggestions, or if there anyone didn’t vibe with the books on this list 🌙☀️

To my pagan/polythiest friends, heres a reminder to actually sit and chat with your deity about what you want/need and what would make life easier for you. They cant read minds most of the time (when you're not actively quietly communicating with them) and communication can only strengthen bonds. Go say that thing youre terrified to say or admit that you dont like some aspect of your practice. 90% of the time life gets easier when you do. And they're genuinely happy to see you succeed how you want to.
I see u, you're doin great

something I don't often see pagans talking about is smelling random things that associate with ur deities even if that thing is nowhere near you. sometimes I'll smell the perfume I use for Aphrodite when I'm not wearing it, or the ocean, or the Pirates of the Caribbean ride water (iykyk), or the Soarin' smellitizers. I feel like Lady Aphrodite uses this olfactory skill the most but others stop by too in this way and it's always a nice lil reminder that my deities are always with me :)

Mighty godess of the hearth hear my prayer
May the fire in my home burn bright
May my family laugh loudly

May there always be a warm place to come home to.

Thank you for this addition!! This is my first book on heathenry (most of my knowledge lies in the Hellenistic realm), so this was all very helpful and beautifully put ✨
Tumblr media
I don’t usually do book recommendations/reviews on here, but for this one, I had to. This was an incredible read, both because of the depth of description of this specific Norse Pagan practice, but also because of how well-researched it is and the author’s firm stances on inclusion and anti-fascism. There’s an entire chapter section devoted to identifying and condemning fascist movements trying to co-opt Norse Pagan practices, and some of the literature cited to explain fascism are texts that I have used in my grad program (I specialize in Holocaust and Genocide Studies), which was really awesome to see! Definitely highly recommend this book 👍🏼
Also, I’d love to hear your book recommendations! I keep a running wishlist for my books, so let me know what should be added to my list!!

prayers don't have to be perfect by the way.
I pray to the gods in the middle of my classes, my shifts at work, and in the shower.
I pray waiting at the bus stop.
I pray looking for something I lost.
I'm not always the best at consistently praying and leaving offerings at my altar. most of my worship is quick prayers on the go and devotional acts.
that's ok. I'm trying and the gods don't hate me or anything.
they don't hate you either. practice in a way that fits into your life and your needs. that's enough I think.
