This is interesting! Especially the part about how different Voldemort and Bellatrix actually are in their approach to life.
The Bellatrix or Sirius/Voldemort dynamics hits different every time because one character archetype is someone who is inherently passionate about life and trying fulfill every second of it yet ready to die abruptly without a second thought for something they believe in while the other character is someone who is desperate to live and not only to live but to live forever because they cannot accept even the thought of death yet cannot truly grasp the essence of genuine living.
Honestly one of the most underrated tropes in fiction.
And while I do think one could explore different things with Bella's and Sirius's characters because their circumstances makes them contrasting due to mostly gender and environmental differences, their characters are essentially built on the same stone and function in a very similar way, in my humble opinion.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk!

Hmm I don’t know. For me personally loving a hated character makes me feel, um, special? Like I see something in them not everyone sees. I try to avoid everything that is hyped (though I did succumb to Game of Thrones) so for me it can be a downside if too many people adore a character. Hating a character the fandom loves is worse because you’re constantly exposed to content about that character and might even have to defend your favorites when the fandom attacks them for doing something to said beloved annoying character.
Ok guys. My sister-in-law and I had a conversation and now I need to know what y’all think.

I had never seen this actress before but she’s very beautiful. What are your thoughts on her as Bella? Something for the HP TV series maybe?

I think that an issue with someone like McGonagall killing Bellatrix would have been that Bella’s defeat then would be a question of being beaten by someone more powerful, whereas in the case with Molly it’s a matter her underestimating Molly and the whole mother’s love thing as well. For me as a Bella fan, I see only Dumbledore and Voldemort as being more powerful than her (and then some other characters being on her level but not superior). Had someone defeated her just on the basis of being more skilled, it would have hurt more than this loop-hole JKR used in Molly’s case. JKR did described Molly as powerful but she shied away from saying that she is MORE powerful than Bellatrix.
Here’s a list of people fandom thinks should have killed Bellatrix, from what I’ve seen:
Neville
Neville’s grandma
Narcissa
Snape
McGonagall
Obviously, either of the Longbottoms are people’s favorites in this contest but it would have been too neat and I don’t see how Neville could take down Bella if he had do it singlehandedly. With Grandma, maybe, but not by himself.
Narcissa- would have been too sad for me. Bella might have been devoted fanatically to Voldemort but she did try to support her sister and Narcissa doing that to her would have been tragic for me, regardless of the context.
Snape- not a lot of emotional impact or poetic justice here. And again it would be a question of power, same as with McGonagall.
So yeah, maybe Molly is the best option if Bellatrix needed to die at all.
Btw, I don’t think Rowling ever said which spell Molly used. There is a lot of fake information about that online with people presenting their own theories as having come from Rowling but I don’t think she’s actually ever said anything about it.
If Bellatrix had to be killed by anyone, Molly was the best choice.
I can't believe I am saying this (and I am sure neither can any of you lol) because of how much I have always hated that plot. It made no sense to me that Bellatrix Lestrange would lose to Molly Weasley in a duel. Bellatrix is the Death Eater par excellence, a prodigy. How can someone like Molly defeat her? It would have indeed been absurd had it not been written the way it is, because the very idea of it is absurd.
Ideally, Bellatrix and Voldemort would have lived, but if Bella had to die, it was far more realistic for Molly to do it than, say, McGonagall. Hear me out!
It is indeed true that Molly could never have defeated Bellatrix in a duel, but they did not duel.
Let's examine that scene.
"NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!"
Mrs. Weasley threw off her cloak as she ran, freeing her arms, Bellatrix spun on the spot, roaring with laughter at the sight of the new challenger.
Molly is clearly enraged, but Bella already isn't taking her seriously. She is laughing at her. She is sure that never in a million years could Molly defeat her.
"OUT OF MY WAY!" shouted Mrs. Weasley to the three girls, and with a simple swipe of her wand she began to duel. Harry watched with terror and elation as Molly Weasley's wand slashed and twisted, and Bellatrix Lestrange's smile faltered and became a snarl. Jets of light flew from both wands, the floor around the witches' feet became bot and cracked; both woman were fighting to kill.
Bellatrix is usually quick to attack, but she keeps laughing at her instead of attacking, and she doesn't even try to kill Molly until Molly throws a spell at her, and only then does Bella start to defend herself. People cite fighting to kill as evidence that Bella was trying hard, but Bella and Molly fighting to kill each other would require entirely different levels of effort as is evident throughout this scene.
"No!" Mrs. Weasley cried as a few students ran forward, trying to come to her aid. "Get back! Get back! She is mine!"
Hundreds of people now lined the walls, watching the two fights, Voldemort and his three opponents, Bellatrix and Molly, and Harry stood, invisible, torn between both, wanting to attack and yet to protect, unable to be sure that he would not hit the innocent.
"What will happen to your children when I've killed you?" taunted Bellatrix, as mad as her master, capering as Molly's curses danced around her. "When Mummy's gone the same way as Freddie?"
Bellatrix is so casual about it that at this point she is no longer even using magic. She is not fighting Molly anymore. She is not cursing her. She is capering — capering! — to avoid Molly's numerous courses. She is still taunting Molly about her children's fate after she kills her. It is a completely one-sided battle. Still, Bellatrix thinks so little of Molly that she is not even fighting her anymore even though Molly is clearly enraged and her curses keep dancing around Bellatrix. It doesn't even cross her mind that one of them might hit her.
"You - will - never - touch - our - children - again!" screamed Mrs. Weasley. Bellatrix laughed the same exhilarated laugh her cousin Sirius had given as he toppled backward through the veil, and suddenly Harry knew what was going to happen before it did.
Molly tells Bella she will never touch her children again, and Bella still only laughs at her so casually. She is completely sure that she Molly will drop dead any moment with a casual flick of her wand, so she is prolonging her jeers, provoking Molly even further.
Molly's curse soared beneath Bellatrix's constreched arm and hit her squarely in the chest, directly over her heart.
Bellatrix is still not even raising her wand to fight Molly. She is just standing there laughing at Molly with her arms outstretched when one of Molly's series of spells hits her heart. Molly is the only one here who is fighting, and the only one who is focusing.
Bellatrix's gloating smile froze, her eyes seemd to bulge: For the tiniest space of time she knew what had happened, and then she toppled, and the watching crowd roared, and Voldemort screamed.
She only realises she has been hit with a spell after it happens. Rowling said somewhere that it was a Stupefy to her heart that made it stop. Bellatrix would not have considered a Stunning Spell that fatal or difficult to avoid.
If Voldemort stood still in front of Hermione, not even trying to defend himself, she would be able to defeat him and the same happened with Molly. It is not unrealistic at all.
I used to think McGonagall should have defeated Bellatrix because she was the only one powerful enough to stand a chance against her, but I no longer do. Kingsley is supposed to be on a similar level to McGonagall and in the Department of Mysteries only a few months after escaping Azkaban, Bellatrix had him writhing in minutes when she was fighting him.
It took Kingsley, McGonagall, and Slughorn's collective efforts to hold Voldemort off but even then, when Bella died Voldemort's emotional outburst caused his magic to explode and sent all three flying through the air. Bella was personally trained by Voldemort.
While it's true that Molly's maternal love was a factor, the most important factor here is Bella's own arrogance. Even if McGonagall was trying to protect a student, Bella wouldn't underestimate her and actually put effort into fighting her, which would have resulted in her victory.
If Bellatrix was to die it was necessary for her to fight someone she would underestimate. She can only be realistically defeated by Voldemort, Dumbledore, and Grindelwald. Voldemort had no reason to fight her and the latter two were dead at this point. So, a protective mother Bella would underestimate was the best option.
The problem has once again more to do with the fandoms' lack of understanding of the text and the movies portraying Bellatrix wrong. Of course, I still hate Molly with all my heart.

God, you were so right about Ginny now that I am thinking more about her! Someone recently pointed out on Tumblr that Sirius is mentioned two times more than her in the books and she's the main character's love interest... Everything about her is told rather than shown and I like some fill-in-the blank moments but barely appearing in any book except the second and sixth is a huge blank for someone who is supposed to be such a major character.
Bellatrix appears in seven scenes but all her scenes are so intense and layered that I think it's much easier to deduce the rest of her life and personality. It's something I love about her, because she still makes a strong impression while being mysterious. Ginny isn't even mysterious because we aren't given enough for the mystery to actually be solvable like satisfying mysteries tend to be. She's also not the main character's love interest and Voldemort has no point of view chapter other than some scenes from Harry's perspective where he looks into his mind.
Even Ginny's 'stolen moments' with Harry at Hogwarts are referenced later in his thoughts rather than actually being shown! I don't think Rowling liked writing her. She doesn't relate to her as much as she does to Hermione or Luna.
Yup, I agree that Rowling didn’t like Ginny as much as she liked Luna or Hermione even if she would claim she does. Ginny’s character is not too well developed aside from her being ”feisty” which in my opinion is an annoying character trait especially when not backed up by any particular skill. Ginny is also the only main young character who isn’t involved in any Horcrux destruction which further shows how JKR liked to keep her in the background and limit her to her role to being a love interest. I like Ginny in the movies which is often the case with people who don’t like her in the books. Whereas those who do like her in the books think the movies destroyed her character.
PS: I’m not indulging in any nonsense like censoring Ginny’s name or posting anti-tags because 1) I don’t consider this post to be bashing and 2) we’re all mature enough here to accept that we like different characters.
