us sidekicks gotta stick together
an// okay, so this is an au, where superheroes exist. zuko is the blue spirit, who was the sidekick of the dragon of the west, who happened to be his uncle iroh. suki is a sidekick to avatar kyoshi. due to iroh and kyoshi teaching them to keep their hero and personal lives separate, they never found out about each other.
title from the quote, “things get dark and you need someone to talk to, I'm always here. after all... us sidekicks gotta stick together.” said by donna troy to dick grayson in titans.
Suki sighed comfortably while laying down in her bed. She had been security for Ba Sing Se station, and had just gotten off work, “Suki, is that you!” Called the soft voice of her roommate.
The auburn-haired twenty-four-year-old sat up, “Yeah, it’s me. How was your day, Zuko?” The Kyoshi Warrior asked while absentmindedly looking at the uniform hung on her wall, a reminder of who she really was.
Her attention was drawn to the door when her dark-haired roommate walked into the room. They were comfortable enough that they could just visit each other any time they wished, “It was okay, Uncle gave me a new tea recipe to try out, though. Those are always exciting.” He answered with a small smile, Uncle Iroh always knew how to make him feel better after a below-average day at work.
Suki hummed while lowering her head on his shoulder, “That’s nice of him.” She commented before looking up at her roommate with a raised brow, “What kind of tea?” The auburn-haired young woman asked with a grin, knowing the tea would be great no matter what flavor.
The dark-haired twenty-six-year-old looked over at her, his features softening even more, “Jasmine infused with honeysuckle. Uncle says it’ll calm your fears.” He answered softly while nuzzling her head with his own.
The auburn-haired twenty-four-year-old giggled slightly, she could always count on her best friend to lift the mood, “Great, maybe we could have some after dinner?” She suggested with hope, each time they planned a meal, they always enjoyed a nice cup of tea before bed, so their minds could be at ease.
Zuko nodded before squeezing her thigh gently, “That sounds nice, Suki.”
~~~
For dinner, they had ramen noodles mixed with egg drop soup, and now they were laying on Suki’s bed, cuddling up to one another with two cups of tea on the bedside table. Their nightly ritual, “Do you ever wonder if there are people trying to save our world? Like individual people who protect certain towns?”
“Like a vigilante?” Suki supplied, curious as to where her roommate was going with this.
The raven-haired young man cleared his throat, signaling that she was right, “Yeah.”
The auburn-haired young woman started tracing an imaginary pattern on his wrist, “I think they’re helpful. The Kyoshi Warriors are kinda like a team of heroes, remember when we helped Appa and protected him from Azula all those years ago.” She answered while using her hands and wrist to stay on track.
A small smile appeared on Zuko’s face, “Yeah, you are.” He complimented before he heard a yawn from his roommate, “Ready for bed?” He asked while looking down at her, his features turning to an understanding one.
Suki nodded her head before lifting off of Zuko’s chest, “Yeah, Zuko, I’m ready.” She yawned, covering it up with her hand. The auburn-haired-twenty-four-year-old then got up and stood by her bed, “Goodnight, Zuko, sweet dreams.” She called when her roommate stood on the other side.
The raven-haired-twenty-six-year-old nodded back with a yawn of his own, “Sweet dreams, Suki.” He whispered before walking in the direction of his own room.
~~~
Suki woke with a jolt, she had dreamt of falling, but instead of lying on the ground, she was safe in her bed, “Zuko?” She whispered before sitting up, “Zuko, I’d really like some more tea now.” The auburn-haired young woman mumbled to herself while rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
Suddenly, she heard a thump and jumped into action, hands raised in a defensive stance, only to find out it was some kind of bird.
Once she relaxed, the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors decided to check her best friend’s room, to make sure he was safe.
~~~
Zuko ran on top of the buildings of Ba Sing Se, dressed as the Blue Spirit. He had been doing this ever since he got banished at the age of twelve, although back then it was just practicing with his swords, taking down imaginary foes, but now, he was on a mission to keep the town he called home safe.
Just as he was about to leap down, he noticed something was off about the shop across the street, the door was slightly opened.
With narrowed eyes under his mask, the Blue Spirit jumped to the side of the building he was on and crouched down, crawling quickly to the side of the off-putting building, stopping under a window.
Once he peaked inside the window, he scanned what was inside, then ducked back down again. There were four guys in what seemed to be a bakery, but it was too dark to know for sure.
Suddenly, one of the men walked over to the window and looked down, causing the Blue Spirit to flatten himself, hoping to blend in like a black cat would against the darkened streets.
~~~
After Suki had discovered her roommate was gone, she immediately got dressed in her armor, “Alright, Zuko, where’d you go?” She muttered before stepping out of their apartment, trying to look for any footprints that would tell where he went, but there were none. She knew he was a theatre kid, but she didn’t anticipate on him being that sucked into a character.
Suddenly, the same bird from earlier flew past her, just about knocking into her face, “Hey, watch it.” The twenty-four-year-old hissed before swatting it away, “Leave me alone!” The auburn-haired young woman growled as it left.
As she watched it fly away, she noticed a black shape out of the corner of her eye, “Hey, I guess they left me a trail to follow.” She wondered out loud as she bent down to pick up the feather, thankful for her gloves.
Her blue eyes followed the trail, “So, this is where he went.” She muttered before finally following the trail.
~~~
Zuko crawled around the corner of the building, staying low as he peeked around it, the man was now scanning his surroundings, sure he saw something below the window.
As the Blue Spirit silently slid his swords out, he quickly jumped into action, crossing the twin swords over the man’s neck from behind, “One wrong move, one cry for help, and I’ll end you.” He threatened in a raspy voice, taking a page from Katara’s book all those years ago.
~~~
Suki reached the end of the trail, and quickly hid behind a building, a few doors down from where her roommate was, So this is where you led me… she thought with narrowed eyes before she caught a glimpse of a shiny sword, Wait a minute, those look like….. Zuko’s swords! That must be Zuko! I gotta save him! The auburn-haired young adult gasped silently as she pulled out her twin fans, ready to protect her best friend at all costs.
~~~
Zuko narrowed his left eye before letting him go, “Tell anyone, and you’re not escaping next time.” He threatened again, before pointing one of his swords at the man’s throat. Uncle Iroh taught him not to kill since he swore revenge to lock up Zuko’s father for what he did to the boy. Iroh taught him at the age of thirteen to scare his targets, then send them to jail, to never severely injure or become a murderer. To never be as cruel as his father was. So, Zuko took his uncle’s teachings to heart, and never killed, only captured.
The man’s eyes grew wide as he trembled, “P-please don’t hurt me.”
Just as the masked young man was about to speak, a figure dressed as a Kyoshi Warrior appeared from the shadows, “That’s not our policy, bud. You’re going to jail.” She promised before moving her fans in an attack position, ready to take him down if necessary.
Zuko’s left eye widened under the mask, Suki…. he thought before his eye narrowed to the criminal, “Stop the men inside, I’ll see to this one.” He spoke in the raspy voice she knew so well.
Suki nodded silently before jumping on the roof, then jumping down through the opened side window.
~~~
As the criminals were taken away, Suki looked around for her masked roommate but found footsteps leading up to the roof instead. Of course, he’d do that. Such a drama king. She thought before disappearing back into the shadows, ready for a good night's sleep.
~~~
Zuko entered his shared apartment with Suki, and groaned, “How was my cover blown? I was careful!” He growled before ripping off his mask, making the straps break, Damn now I gotta fix it! His mind yelled before walking over to the couch and sinking, all adrenaline leaving his body, resulting in a shell of the sidekick.
Suki walked in a few minutes later, “Why’d you keep this a secret from me, Zuko?!” She yelled while stopping in front of him.
The dark-haired young man pointed to himself in shock, “Me? Why have you been keeping your secret? You kept being a hero even after you left? I thought we told each other everything!” He scoffed while crossing his arms, chest heaving with anger, making the temperature in the room drop. He always sucked in heat whenever he was angry.
His auburn-haired roommate shivered, then started to rub her arms, but the anger never faded from her dark ocean blue eyes, a shark ready to pounce on its prey, “Avatar Kyoshi taught me to keep both lives separate! When I moved in with you, I thought I could finally settle down for a while, but apparently, I was wrong!” She seethed, words dripping with venom. She deserved a quiet life too, didn’t she?
Zuko rubbed both hands over his face, hoping that would calm him down and bring the temperature back to normal, “Look, The Dragon of the West told me to do the same. He didn’t want me to lose myself in the chaos of being a vigilante all the time.” He explained, causing the temperature to return to normal.
Suki sighed, a mix of relief and tiredness, “Wait, so The Dragon of the West is Uncle Iroh?” She pieced together, “And he’d been training you ever since the incident?” She asked, causing her tired roommate to nod.
She sat down beside him, all anger leaving her body, the shark once again at bay, “Huh….. that makes so much sense.” The Kyoshi Warrior then looked over at her vigilante roommate, “You were pretty good with those swords.” She commented with a smile, “I always thought you just kept them around because they reminded you of your thespian days.” The twenty-four-year-old whispered before leaning back, playing with her fingers in appreciation of the time Zuko revealed how much he adored theatre.
Zuko hummed, “Thanks. I thought your fans were badass.” He complimented back, “and the way you jumped on that roof with so much grace.” He then pieced everything together right then and there, causing his golden eye to widen, “Your Avatar Kyoshi’s sidekick?” The dark-haired twenty-six-year-old asked while staring at her in disbelief, “How did I not notice that sooner? You practically use the same moves as her.”
Suki laughed before putting a gentle hand on his shoulder, “Let’s talk about this tomorrow, I don’t know about you, but I’d like to sleep for the rest of the night.” She commented while stretching her tired limbs.
Her roommate nodded in agreement, “Yeah, night, Suki.” He whispered before getting up from the couch and heading back towards his room. He definitely deserved to sleep for a couple of days.
The auburn-haired young woman hummed before walking back to her room, where she dreamed of what other superheroes could be running around Ba Sing Se.
Maybe its just me, but The Blue Spirit really reminds me of Nightwing (Dick Grayson) and Suki reminds me of Wonder Girl (Donna Troy).
Okay, so I made this comparison which inspired me for the title and concept of the superheroes au.
tw for mentions of child abuse
