Since you know a lot about birds, I wanted to ask you this. Is it okay to share my own food with my parrot? Whenever I eat she gets really curious and tries to take a bite out of my food. Is there food I absolutely should not give her under any circumstances? Is it okay to give her things with cheese on them?
This is a tricky question because there's the Right answer and there's the Reality answer.
The Right answer is that your parrot should only eat what they'd eat in the wild, and pellets because it's difficult to actually provide the right balance of vitamins and minerals in captivity.
The Reality answer is that they're going to get their beaks on everything. And you're going to be tempted to share with them. And it's okay to do so in moderation.
For example, Mango freaking loves potato chips. She hears anything that remotely sounds like a potato chip bag crinkling and she loses her mind. The joy she gets from the occasional potato chip is immeasurable. I'd say she gets a potato chip once every few weeks, and she CHERISHES it. She eats it slowly, savors every little bite, even closes her eyes to (in my mind) devote all of her senses to enjoying it.
Is it good for her? Nope. Is she going to get one sometimes? Yup.
There are some things to avoid at all costs, especially including but NOT limited to chocolate. There is a lot of alarm around chocolate and for good reason! Cacao is bad for everyone, including us, in large enough doses. I will, however, admit that Mango has had an M&M before. Since it's milk chocolate, it wasn't cause for alarm—the cacao content is pretty low in a single M&M—so I didn't take it away from her. And oh boy, did she think that M&M was the greatest thing she'd ever had.
Some other no-nos would be anything with caffeine, because their hearts are already working at a high level. I've also read that onions and garlic are toxic, and I avoid them just to be safe.
Since you called it out specifically, for the record, cheese and other dairy products are going to risk giving them diarrhea because they can't process lactose. It's not going to kill your bird to have a bite of something with cheese on it! You just want to make sure she doesn't have too much.
Now, if you want to provide some fun "people" food, warm noodles are always a big hit. Birds have a poor sense of taste because they use their beak for everything, so tasting everything would be pretty awful. What they love is TEXTURE. Unflavored/unseasoned/plain rice cakes can also be a fun treat!

So, I've been working for the past couple months on Harvest Chat, mostly to see if I could make a game with just buttons and emoji—turns out I could, and I'm really proud of what it's grown into.
However, marketing a game that doesn't live on Steam or in an app store has turned out to be incredibly difficult, so I'm hoping you'll excuse me for this intrusion on your timeline as I try to find a way to reach people.
If you want to know more about the game, you can check out the official website at https://harvest-chat.com. Thank you for reading this far and I hope you have a birdtastic day! ❤️ Reblogs to help spread the word are extremely appreciated!

me, standing in the todaysbird follower crowd, wearing sunglasses to hide my happy tears
How could you link that Squakoverflow game?!? It's too good, don't you know how much your followers love birds, it's been one day and I have over 1,100 fake birds and this is all your fault, sir. You can hatch *eggs.*
Join me in my new addiction. Oh, and if you hatch a duplicate egg you can gift the bird to someone who has it on their wishlist, it's literally such a sweet game.
I love that game, I’ve done some art for it too :)

i love your birds and its great to see people spread out bird welfare!
ahhh thank you!! i get nervous about being preachy on a soap box but it's something i deeply care about 🥲 especially living with it, and seeing the impact of captivity on them firsthand

Hey I think I just saw your post about parrot ownership, and I’ve been having a similes dilemma about turtles. There are two deformed box turtles at a nature center (people kidnapped them from the wild, didn’t take care of them as babies, dumped them on nature center) that I could adopt, but I worry about the same thing as you mentioned with parrots. Also, I’m 27 and they’re both under 10, so I’m probably going to die before them, which means someone else will have to take responsibility for them. I get what you’re saying about the parrots
poor turtles, i hate that that happened to them!! 💔
if you think you could give them a good and healthy life, then my personal recommendation that you didn't ask for is to pretend you've adopted them. build the care for them in your routine with imaginary or plush turtles! see how it might impact your daily life even if it feels silly. make a spreadsheet of theoretical costs, upfront and recurring, and if you have the ability to open a second checking/savings account, actually move that money over. pretend to schedule regular vet appointments and make the time to drive to a vet that handles exotic animals and sit in the parking lot for 20-30 minutes. then you can have a really thorough understanding of the impact before making the commitment!
as for outliving... i worry about that with my parrot, a lot. i have money for her written into my will, and instructions for her to go to a sanctuary if no one surviving me in my life can take her. i don't think she'd get along with other parrots at this point, so if she does go to a sanctuary, the money i will have set aside for her will be for her to have her own enclosure and toward what i hope will be loving care.

Hey I just saw your post about how parrots shouldnt be pets, and I was wondering if you could make a list of which kinds of birds would be better as pets? I would like to have a bird one day when I'm more financially stable, but there's so many kinds with so many different needs I don't even know where to start researching, so some tips from someone that knows so much about them would be great! Thanks <3
hello!! so here are my top 3 recommendations. i encourage anyone to share their thoughts, even if they disagree with me!
- PIGEONS. domestic pigeons have been bred for captivity and fare very well with good, loving humans. feral pigeons have such a bad reputation, but we used to keep them and cherish them and they deserve that love!! there are so many beautiful breeds, interesting breeds, just all around highly recommend the underappreciated joy that is pigeons.
- budgerigars! they also do well with loving human care. it breaks my heart how many end up in bad situations when they are capable of being sweet, playful companions. they are considered domesticated and are suited for life in caring captivity. they are also treated as expendable and cheap which makes me angry, but i don't get the impression you'd be one of those people.
- cockatiels would be my fourth place recommendation. these guys can be so variable in their temperament, that they have a bit of a biting reputation but treat them with love and they can be your best friend. note that they love to mimic shrill noises and whistle, and they are messy, notorious for lots of dust, so be aware of potential noise and allergies!
definitely keep in mind every bird is unique and has their own temperament that may differ from what is "normal" for their species. they are intelligent individuals!
and i would always recommend rescues because there are so many birds that people get, don't like, and discard. they may be more work, they may come with baggage, but don't we all deserve a second chance at a happy life?
(disclaimer that there are lots of reasons that birds are surrendered, and not all of them are from negligence or lack of love. sometimes they outlived their owner and no one could take them, or they became aggressive when a baby joined the family, etc.!!)
one thing you can do is search youtube for things like "screaming cockatiel", to try to get an idea if the bird at their loudest is tolerable for you.
i hope that list helps someone! and if there are any corrections, please don't be shy!

to clarify it's a miso soup but i knew she'd only take like maybe 2-3 sips and go into destruction mode, which is why i put it in the bathtub! it is not something she gets on any regular basis, just this one time to pique her interest (she ignored it with water, bc i guess water is too boring to bother with)
okay so i normally avoid videos/pics of my rescue parrot in public spaces for several reasons, but this is quite possibly the funniest video i've ever taken of her and it would be selfish of me to keep it to myself!!
happy holidays everyone, here is my gremlin princess Mango having absolutely 0 thoughts in her pretty little head.
