I’ve seen a few reviews of The Secret History tonight and they all fell in the ‘the first half was good but once the mystery was revealed it meandered and didn’t go anywhere’ camp. Which just shows that most people who read The Secret History haven’t encountered Greek Tragedy before.
Unlike familiar heroes journeys or mystery novels of the 20th century, greek tragedies were typically told in two parts - the violent or tragic act shown to the audience, followed by the characters responsible meeting their fates. TSH is a modern retelling of a Greek Tragedy - Richard is the chorus witnessing the downfall of the players for what they did to Bunny, and for all the choices they made along the way.
A tragedy is never about the whodunnit, or the why, tragedies act as a warning of what will happen to you should you follow the same path. It’s why it is so fucking brilliant; it’s satire of everything wrong with academia and fiscal elitism told through the vessel of an academic pursuit typically reserved for those who are a part of that elitist class.
I think you need a basic understanding of Greek Tragedy to realise just how brilliant it is. Thank god for Greek Theatre in second year uni - a semester of Antigone didn’t have much of an impact then, but it certainly helped me appreciate a fantastic novel.

Some boys will let you get a cat even when they don't like cats, and some boys will allow the guy who orchestrated the murder of almost his entire family in a coup and would do it again and also stabbed you personally in the gut to live just because he's your dad and you feel conflicted about it.

The Prisoner's Throne, a summary:
Cardan: So have you noticed that Oak is exactly like me but without a shred of dignity?
Jude: You have dignity?

JUDE, comfortably high after a stressful week, twirling her vape: I have a question about Nicasia.
Cardan: go on
Jude: so she has legs on land and a tail in the water
Cardan: Indeed
Jude: And that's not a glamour. That's actual legs, right?
Cardan, increasingly suspicious: yes
Jude: what about her (eyebrows eyebrows)
Cardan: -_-
Jude: Does she have (eyebrows eyebrows) when she has a fish tail or is it like a cloaca or whatever fish have
Cardan: Jude.
Jude: Cause that would be as weird as switching between legs or not right? Like do merfolk spawn?
Cardan, begging: jude stop
Jude takes another pull on her vape : so did you guys ever fuck when she was a fish

Look I've listened to a lot of audiobooks in my time but BY FAR the most incredible narrator casting I've experienced is Jeremy Irons reading Brideshead Revisited.
Because Scar from the Lion King will read you a book about the DREARY ENNUI of it all and how DREADFUL it is to be rich and gay and have an INTENSE family but also how DESPERATELY you would shoehorn yourself into that picturesque life fucking up everyone in your way including yourself.

Nothing has so clearly showed me the difference between a romantic fantasy and a fantasy romance than the Cruel Prince Trilogy vs Stolen Heir.

Quick shout out to the balls on Jude, Taryn, and Vivi's birth parents for not only sucessfully fleeing faerie but for showing up to a hospital with NO IDEA what a half red-cap baby would look like and no way to glamour hospital staff.
Nurse: Ma'am we'd like to keep your baby in for observation and maybe also to contact some kind of government authorities?
Ava: No she's FINE cat eyes and furred ears run in the FAMILY.

An average morning in the Jurdan bedroom:
Cardan: wow I had the WILDEST trauma dream last night.
Jude: the snake one again?
Cardan: no I was a little kid wandering the empty halls of the brugh calling out for my mother but I was all alone.
Jude: nice. In mine I was having tea with Madoc and I asked him for the sugar and he just straight up stabbed me. Also he was wearing Taryns earrings which was weird and then when I went to hit him I couldn't because we were in the Undersea.
Cardan: so random. Did I tell you about the one I had last week where it was basically a shot for shot remake of the coronation where my entire family was murdered but instead of being drunk under a table I was being beaten by one of Balekin's servants while Locke and Nicasia made out in front of me?
Jude: hahaha, so harsh. Sometimes I'll dream about someone breaking into my bedroom to murder me but he's like a mix up of Valerian, Balekin, and Locke and I can never find my knives.
Cardan, patting her hand: I know how much you hate it when you can't find your knives. Shall I order breakfast?

Jude at some point remembering the curse Grimsen said he put on Taryn's moon and star earrings and thinking she should let her sister know: Hey Taryn you know those earrings I gave you-
Taryn, wearing Jude's favourite shirt without asking: what about them?
Jude:
Jude: nothing.

Princess Floralinda and the Forty Flight Tower is a subversive fairy tale retelling by Tamsyn Muir and I had a blast reading it.
For Locked Tomb fans you have Muir's distinctive voice, blend of horror, humour, queerness, and a loveably toxic relationship. The audiobook is also voiced by Moira Quirk.
For anyone who watched Damsel: you have a princess survival story that's a lot more thought out, grittier, and contains an interesting character arc.
