Sick Leave
It’s that time of year again- Flu season!  I write this with a bucket in my hand, and my lunch in my bucket, so won’t be posting until I’m better.  Sorry about this, I know that I’m not really putting my best foot forward, but it’s like they say;  Life is like a box of chocolate, you sometimes get strawbery filling.

NOTE:  I’m still a bit under the weather, but we’ll see if I’m up to the task of writing Saturday’s article in the morning.  If not, we’ll scrape by with a decklist and a few notes, and I’ll fill it in later.  Thanks for your patience!

Spell Slinging:  Knights of New Benalia
Tumblr media
I hefted the ancient blade high in the air.  My father’s sword, my grandfather’s sword, was magnificent.  The weapon embodied their legacy, the holy order to which they belonged, and which I soon would join.  The first trial began the next day, and I had no doubt that I would pass.
I swung the sword, slicing the air in well practiced moves, strikes and parrys, lunges and fakes.  The sword was perfectly ballanced, it’s blade honed to a perfect edge.  Generations of use had not dulled the relic, nor the sense of purpose it radiates.  My father had died in battle against the Cabal, murdered by lifeless shambles, because he was too honorable to kill even the vile necromancers who guided the zombies.  Though I honored that sentiment, I swore not to make the same mistake on my quest for justice.  I swore to avenge my father on the day I received the sword, and I would let nothing, not the Cabal nor my trials, stop me.
The Knights are a formidible order, by far the strongest part of New Benalia’s army, but without their armor and weapons, they are but men.  Diciplined and honorable men, but still mere mortals.  So let’s help them out, shall we?  First off, we want some Equipment cards:
Tumblr media
                                                   Short Sword
Next, we’ll need some Aura Enchantments:
Tumblr media
                                              Daybreak Coronet
Finally, we might need a few Instants in case things get rough:
Tumblr media
                                                       Holy Day
Normally, I’d write more, but I’ve gotten a bit sick and I’m not really up to it today.  I’m sure I’ll be fine by Saturday for Come Together, and either way I have the Card of the Days picked out for the week.  I’m planning on finishing this one up when I’m better.  See you in a bit!

In the Trenches:  Knights of New Benalia
Tumblr media
I stood at attention, rigid and ready.  My commander was giving a speach to rouse us to battle, but I couldn’t hear him, for I was paralised with fear.  This was to be my first battle, and I was not ready.  Of course, I was prepared; I had trained my entire life for this.  But what I had not practiced was what I feared most: killing.  I would gladly serve and die for New Benalia, for my freinds, my family, but I was not certain that I could bring myself to take the life of anyone, for any reason.
The speach must have finished, for my compatriots raised their swords and gave a rousing battle cry.  I did not.
For our knight decks, we need three kinds of creatures.  Those are creatures that care about being equiped/enchanted:
Tumblr media
                                                 Skyhunter Cub
Creatures that help equip/enchant the first ones:
Tumblr media
                                        Danitha Capashen, Paragon
And last but not least, creatures that care about Knights in general:
Tumblr media
                                                 Knight Exemplar
With those categories in mind, we now need to find the CMC ratios ideal for this deck.  To keep them fast, we’re not going to let any creature cost more than 3.
For the first category, we want plenty of 1-drops.  Now, the only CMC 1 knight that cares about equipment and/or enchantments is Novice Knight, so were’s going to have four of him.  If you want to, feel free to add a Kitesail Apprintace or two, but to keep the flavor as tight as possible, I’m leaving them out.  To round out the costs here, we’re adding one Puresteel Paladin and three Skyhunter Cubs.
For the next category, we’re going to want more two- and three-drops.  We already have more than half(32, to be exact) cards, including lands, so we’re going to want three Auriok Steelshapers and two Danitha Capashen, Paragons.
For the third and final category, we don’t really care what CMC these guys come in, so long as it’s below 3.  We’re going to put in four War Falcons, as they’re both cheap and they add to our lacking airforce.  Last but not least, we add four Knight Exemplars, as they’re super potent with this deck, and if you have two of them they give you an invicible army.
That about wraps it up for today, but one more thing before we part:  The ratios present here may not be final;  I’m goung to keep playtesting and editing the deck until saturday, so I may find more effective combinations.  Don’t forget to look for today’s Card of the Day, keep an eye out for Thursday’s Spell Slinging post to see what Enchantments, Artifacts, Instants and Sorceries will be in the deck, and check out last Sunday’s Lay of the Land if you’re wondering what in the worlds I’m talking about.  Until then, keep on shuffling!

Looks good, but try adding firebreathing, and reduce P/T if you have to.  The reason for firebreathing specifically is the high synergy present(one dies, boost another at your convenience) with multiple copies or other dragons.

One of the nice things about Treasures is that they’re useful to every deck. Some decks use them better than others, but even so you can be confident that an effect like this won’t be totally one-sided.

Lay of the Land:  Knights of New Benalia
Tumblr media
I look to the west, where the coming hordes shamble toward my troops.  Creatures of darkness, lifeless husks whom’s only desire is our demise.  They outnumber us, ten to one, but we have something that they do not.  My gaze shifts to the east, where the shine of my glorious homeland can be seen even from here.  My mind snaps to a firm resolve.  I cannot let those creatures take my home.  Steeled to a new resolve, I unsheath my sword and turn my steed to face my compatriots, every face shining with the same sacred light.
“The time is now, Brothers and Sisters, for us to uphold our vows.  You and I swore to protect our home, our families.  We each knew we would be called to serve our time.  We trained together for years for this very moment.  We are the morning light, and as we ride forth the darkness of night shall be destroyed.  Are you ready, my friends, to prove your honor?  Ride fourth, Knights of New Benalia, for the day has come!”
The Knights of New Benalia are a truly noble order.  They are the last and strongest line of defence guarding the sacred land.  Trained from an early age, they hone their skills to a razor edge, and their loyalty to New Benalia finer still.  They are indeed a force to be reckoned with.  But what is a knight without a sword?
Tumblr media
                                                  Novice Knight
We seem to have stumbled upon the knights’ mechanical identity.  You see, the knight cares about his tools.  Of course, these tools can come in many different forms.  We have Equipment, like swords, shields, and armor:
Tumblr media
                                                   Short Sword
Enchantments, like Auras or global effects:
Tumblr media
                                                 Knight’s Pledge
And beastly companions, such as Horses, Griffins, and Birds:
Tumblr media
                                                     War Falcon
This proves to be quite a potent combination: stating with small, fast creatures and building them up to be giants.  With Novice Knight and Knight’s Pledge, you can quite frequently have a 4/5 by turn two.  Not to mention it’s pretty cool to trounce your opponent with the holy forces of New Benalia.  The result is a competitive modern deck with strong flavor.
That should give you an idea of what we’ll be working on throught the coming week.  Don’t forget to check out today’s Card of the Day, and keep on the lookout for Monday’s In the Trenches.  Until then, keep on shuffling!

Hey, Mark! I'm one of (probably) many who missed out on GDS3. What's the likleyhood of another one happening within the next few years?
Next few years? Low.
Eventually? Good.

Welcome Aboard
Welcome to Board the Weatherlight, the one-stop source for top-down deckbuilding.  Here we’ll talk about flavor based decks, with a different theme every week.  By the end of each week, you’ll have the knowledge to construct a flavorful deck playable in Modern format, and each one stong enough to win with some frequency.
You’ll find Lay of the Land articles on Sundays, where I will introduce the week’s topic and give some insight into a few strategies that work well with it, In the Trenches articles on Tuesday, where we talk about what creatures to include in your deck and in what quantities, Spell Slinging articles on Thursday, where we round out our decks with meaningful instants, sorceries, and enchantments, Come Together articles on Saturday, where we compile what we’ve learned throught the week into a playable decklist, and Card of the Day entries every day, where I’ll show you a card that works well with our deck and why.  Feel free to ask for your favorite style in the Requests sections, but remember that it may take awhile for me to get to your requests.
Keep an eye out for the first article coming out Sunday!  Untill then, keep on shuffling!
