in guarani there's a standard greeting that literally translates to "are you happy" (ndevy'apa) and the natural reply is "i'm happy" (avy'a) and as americans learning the language we were so distressed like "but what if we're not happy....." and our teachers were like "that's so not the fucking point"

we kept trying to think of any other way to reply but our teachers kept trying to get it into our brains that it's an idiomatic greeting, it literally is not the time or place to traumadump, and as usamerican english speakers we are not some special exception for saying "what's up" with the reply being "not much" instead of "the ceiling"

but anyway while i was working in paraguay -- the country with the largest population of guarani speakers -- i got sent an article by some friends back home like "look! they're saying that paraguay is the happiest country in the world!"

and the methodology was "we went around and asked paraguayans if they're happy and recorded their responses" and i was like. oh. of course you did. and of course you got a 100% positive response rate.

I have a question for the fanfic writers among you: How do you treat your work in progress when a very similar story is put out there? Do you go on writing - in the spirit that everything is unique in its own way - or do you abandon the piece - in the spirit of preventing 'superfluous' contributions?

Let's add a further wrench into the process by saying the recently published work by another author, so similar to your own, seems so much better written than your own (granted we are always our own worst critics). Where do you go with that?

Maybe this is a question for readers, too. Do you mind reading similar works/story lines?

Something I need to get off my chest before Alecto comes out bc it's something that seemed clear to me reading the books, but I haven't seen many people say this:

I don't think John can currently resurrect people.

We don't know how exactly the resurrection happened, we don't know how he did it back then, I don't think it's something he can currently do. I don't know whether he needs a huge amount of suddenly unleashed thanergy, I don't know whether he needs to chomp down on a fresh planet soul, I don't know whether he needs Alecto to do it for or with him. I don't even know whether it's possible to resurrect house people (people adapted to live on thanergetic planets).

I just don't think he can do it right now, which is why he's avoiding it. Motherfucker would abuse that power if he had it. No talk about godly restraint or some shit like that is going to convince me that he wouldn't just resurrect half the cohort every second Tuesday to conquer planets more efficiently.

To me, John was always a con artist caught in his own con. He's jumping from lie to lie because he has to go deeper in instead of giving up. Of course, him not fully resurrecting Kiriona because it's easier to control her this way is a compelling and well fitting explanation, but until proven otherwise I will maintain that he simply can't do it.

Kind of hilarious to me how poorly the title "Mob Psycho 100" localized to English-speaking areas. To someone whose first language is English, it scans as:

Mob (Yakuza, Mafia)

Psycho (violent person with "crazy" behaviors)

Thus: a particularly violent member of organized crime.

But in Japanese it scans as:

Mob (background characters in crowd scenes in manga or anime)

Psycho (short for psychic)

Thus: a psychic who looks/acts like someone you'd never pick out of a crowd scene in a comic.
