Riverdale Recap 2x07

This week we discover that Riverdale has so many new and interesting townsfolk. We meet Creepy Farmer and a beret-wearing wheelchair-bound German drug lord (and it totally makes sense because this is Riverdale).

BEST DRESSED

Riverdale pulls out all the stops when dressing their minor characters. Last week we had the delightful ghoulie dressing gown and who can forget ye olde hospital outfits from 2x01? 

This may be the one and only time when the aviator effect* (* a phenomenon whereby even an unattractive person will appear attractive while wearing aviator sunglasses) failed.

100%! So eloquently summed up. Love your analysis of the body language in the final scene. I think it’s spot on. They definitely have a ways to go before before everything is resolved.

i'm so disappointed in the bughead reunion. they're together again? just like that? we know betty confesses but we don't get to see it. and what about jughead???? does he confess his secrets too????? i really wanted to be excited for this episode but it fell flat for me :/

I’m sorry it didn’t quite hit your expectations - it’s why I try not to have too many lol. Did the *episode* fall flat for you, or was it bughead that fell flat for you? Because I don’t think this was supposed to be an episode of resolutions. It showed so many shifts in power dynamics, particularly the reclaiming of control. Cheryl over Penelope, Jughead over the Ghoulies/as someone who wants to build the Serpents up, B & V back together again, Betty over the Black Hood, Veronica stepping up towards the same level of her parents. It was a transitional episode, in which gears shifted (ayyyy) and new things were set in motion.

Sure, to see Betty explain everything is the stuff of dreams, but I think it would pretty much be a repeat of the storyline we’d already seen through Betty’s eyes. It was a jump cut for Veronica’s explanation too. Explanations don’t necessarily equate to resolutions, not immediately anyway. We know from interviews that the kiss hasn’t been disclosed yet, so we still have that resolution to come, it hasn’t happened yet. It’s been *set in motion* but not really happened.

I think what we did see was something from Jughead that I enjoyed watching. When talking to Betty he didn’t fire his vulnerabilities at her in the form of insults like he did in 1x10. He literally said she was the one thing that could still hurt him, she basically loved him and left him - just like he’s used to. You can see how much he’s willing to fight for Betty, how much he loves her, simply from the way he laid out his feelings rather than weaponised them this time. Think about the way he’s always willing to let FP back in, even after the countless times he’s hurt him. This is something Jughead does when he knows people want him. Yes, he’s got some truths of his own to share, but I’m pretty sure Betty’s explanation was a relief that he could only ever dream of and he wanted to hold onto that for a while. Not to excuse his withholding of information, but I get it. Even from the way they were sitting, Betty leaning again Jughead but turned away from him signalled something to me, that they’re on their way back but there’s more to come. It will come out eventually, we know this, and hopefully we’ll get the resolution scene we didn’t this time around.

Riverdale Recap: 2x05

Chapter 17: The Town That Dreaded Sundown

There was no competition in this episode. Everyone bow down to the greatness that is Alice Cooper and her scene-stealing outfit. I actually burst out laughing when she walked out because it was so over-the-top and so totally and completely Alice. When she told Hal to "shove it", I may have snorted. This guy knows what's good:

"It's all just recycled banter and plunging necklines and throwing shade to distract us all from the fact that there is really nothing going on underneath. " Way harsh, but I thought it was a good line.

"We can walk it back later". WE BETTER BE WALKING THIS ALL THE FREAKING WAY BACK TO SEASON 1 BUGHEAD.

OMNOMNOM: FOODIE MOMENTS

Unfortunately, there was not a lot of omnomnoming going on this episode. Some dull looking canapes at the SoDale party and this 1-second grab of identified Serpent food that caught my eye. Onion rings? Tim Hortons?  We may never know. 

I will add that the picture of Pop with a plate of hamburgers at the Diner was absolutely adorable. I'm so glad we are seeing more Pop Tate this season. He is a gem! 

SHIP OF THE WEEK

Bughead only had one scene together but what a scene it was. It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch and I think we all knew how it was going to end (even if we kept telling ourselves that nothing could break these two apart because they are totally endgame). So thanks for a little bit of (bitter)sweetness before stabbing us in the heart, twisting the knife, ripping out our hearts and stomping on them. Thanks soo much. 

I will add that I did like seeing more of Archie and Betty's friendship (please don't hurt me, fellow Bughead shippers! Just hear me out). Archie and Betty have always been friends first, and that's the way I would like it to stay. Despite high school drama and them each having their own relationships, it's nice to see that their friendship is still solid and that Betty can rely on him to drop the dumbells for a second and help her. I know Jughead would help her in an instant too but he was a bit busy being bitten by rattlesnakes and screaming at people, so it was nice to see Archie step-up and help our number #1 girl.

INSIGNIFICANT BACKGROUND DETAILS

I don't hang out at biker bars on the reg, so I'm not sure if it's normal for money to be hanging from the ceiling.

QUESTIONS

Is the Red Circle business really over? If it is, I'd be asking for a refund on that t-shirt right about now.

 Will you ever be able to listen to the Lollipop song the same way again?

Can someone please explain to me what season it is currently?! Betty had a fan on in her room making me think it was warm, but then the Sinclairs waltz into the hotel wearing wool coats and furs. Continuity people! There was another fan at the school but Nick was wearing a chunky cream knit. I don't get it - does he have poor circulation?

Are there two black hoods? Keller said the letters weren't a match, meaning that there is a copycat or two black hoods (possibly working together?) Do we believe him or is this just another example of shoddy detective work?

I'm sorry, this might just be my Bughead shipper bias rearing it's ugly head, but what makes Jughead think he can step up as a leader of the Serpents? There would be gang members who are much older and have much more influence than him in the ranks. As if a 16-year-old boy (who just joined!) is going to have any sway over the direction the gang takes. Bless his cotton socks for trying.

How long do you think it will take Veronica to forgive Betty for her outburst? We know that grudges don't last very long if previous experience is anything to go by (e.g. Kevin).

Does anyone else want to see Josie and the Pussycats regularly kick-ass and take names?

What were they thinking having the waiters dress up in hard hats and denim at the SoDale launch? It was so tacky! I thought Hermione and Hiram were classier than that.

Were you surprised how quickly Archie went from "no drugs for me" to "give me all the jingle jangle please"?

Did you notice that Hal's had his hair done? Probably not. Life must be so tough for Hal living in the shadow of Alice Cooper.

How angry were you when Toni called Jughead "Juggie"?

Riverdale Recap: 2x04

This episode of Riverdale is brought to you by a cypher (I learnt a new word this week, kids), high school boys making shitty decisions and the reinforcement of librarian stereotypes (Tsk! Tsk!).

BEST DRESSED

Veronica is always pretty stylish but this week, in particular, I thought she killed it. First with her cute fuschia mini skirt and embellished collared black top, and then, of course, there was the red circle top she designed. If she's hard pressed for money again, she could probably make a decent profit selling t-shirts. 

TALKY TALK: FAVOURITE QUOTES

"I want to support you and your comely crew". We can add this one to my list of 'Veronica quotes that make me cringe'.

"It'll be like a little code-breaking party". 

"Betty's ponytail is iconic and beyond reproach." Preach. Have I mentioned today how much I love Kevin? I must state my love for him at least once a day.

"You're Betty Cooper. You're like Nancy Drew meets Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". It's about time you said something right this episode, Jughead.

OMNOMNOM: FOODIE MOMENTS

I'm deeply concerned that Jughead is crushing his ranch tortilla chips. No one wants to eat tortilla crumbs.

What cereal do you think Jughead eats? Do you think he is more of a Cheerios or Cinnamon Toast Crunch kinda guy?

LEVEL OF ATMOSPHERIC FOG

Extremely low visibility.

I'm surprised that anyone could see anything in this episode. Nearly every scene was hazy and dimly lit. The townspeople of Riverdale should really invest in higher wattage light globes. We also got an abundance of cloud shots as the perfectly timed thunderstorm rolled in to coincide with the rumble between the Serpents and the Bulldogs. 

INSIGNIFICANT BACKGROUND DETAILS

What is in the bowl on the table at the Cooper residence? Napkins? Warm towels that they give out at fancy restaurants? I never know if I am meant to wipe my face or hand with those things. 

Are we actually meant to believe that the "Town of Riverdale" issues its own Driver's License? That's one way to get around identifying what state Riverdale is in. Also, this looks like a copy and paste job on a cardboard business card. Props to the props department. 

QUESTIONS

Where is Kevin's mom?  I want to meet the woman who gave birth to this angel. I'm so glad that this episode cleared up my questions about the Keller's unusual home decor / missing mom from last week. 

I wonder why Archie and Veronica weren't invited to the code-breaking party? I'm sure with their combined brainpower they would have cracked the code in no time.

Why does Hiram want to cause chaos and confusion in Riverdale? What is his end game? And why do creepy/rich people always have a wooden chest on their desks? What do people keep in them?

Do you love seeing Fred and Alice fight? I  sure do! Although, admittedly Alice fighting with anyone is great.

Why was there an owl at the library? WHY??! 

Are you angry at the writers for making Toni get between Bughead? I want to like Toni and I want to see more of her character because she seems pretty cool, however, I'm going to pretty annoyed if her only purpose on the show is to split up Bughead.
