As the famine took its toll on the island more and more, Anatu tried her best to find happiness where she could. It seemed like new bad news arrived each day. A failed crop. Sickness among the animals. Another death.

On good days, Anatu would lose herself in the mundane tasks of caring for her family, skipping more meals so that her children may fill their bellies.

On bad days, it was getting harder and harder to get out of bed. She would dream of the Cowplant's promise and hold the hope in her heart.

That night at ceremony, Caradin sneaks away from his family and visits the shrine of the Cowplat just as Saelua told him.

He places his offering of salted fish among the other tributes and approaches slowly. "I have come to ask about my dreams and their purpose."

"Yesssss." A voices whispers both loudly and quietly at the same time.

Caradin's knees shake as he kneels before the Cowplant. His eyes stay glued to the floor, unable to make eye contact. "Am I right in believing they are more than mere dreams?"

"Come closer so that I may share my secrets, child."

Caradin did as he was told. As the Cowplant spoke, a deep knowing planted itself inside his heart.

One day, it would be his job to save the people of the island.

But for now, he could sleep soundly knowing that time was on his side.

Caradin can't seem to shake the recent bad dream he's been having every single night. Something just isn't right.

He decided to visit the Wise Woman, Saelua, to ask her advise.

"Saelua! Oh, I'm so glad I caught you." Caradin waves ecstatically, a bit out of breath from his trek through the woods.

The elder sits beside the fire in front of her house, staring out at the ocean. At the sound of her name, she sets her eyes on the boy and smiles.

"Caradin! Wonderful to see you today. Are you feeling better since last we met?"

"No...yes... actually...that's why I'm here. My dreams are getting worse and even more troubling, they feel so...real."

Saelua stands and approaches, her eyes kind unjudging.

He swallows. "I think they may be visions of the future."

"The future, hm." Saelua considers his words. "May I ask why you believe them to be?"

Caradin shrugs, feeling a little silly now that he's actually said the words aloud. " I don't know. Just a feeling, I guess."

"Explain them to me."

Caradin tells her everything. The terrifying roar. The sea of fire. The innumerable death & destruction.

Saelua is silent for a moment. Then she nods and rubs his arm. "You were right not to ignore these visions, young one. Here's what you must do..."
