Yuri On Ice Analysis: The Portrayal Of Love

Hi everyone!

Yeah, so I'm not sure if anyone has done this before, or if anyone has realized this but the 2016 anime Yuri!!! on Ice actually portrays different forms of love very elegantly and I thought I would make a post about it. It took me a while, I know, I've honestly been thinking about this a lot though, so here we go (Let me warn you that this post briefly talks about sex, it's nothing explicit but I like to warn people!):

Familial Love: I think one of the major plot points actually revolves around Yuuri's journey in understanding that he has a huge support system, the first thing he does is go back home to his family after he had a really hard time with skating. Not to mention there are numerous times when he's supported by relatives throughout the series. Besides that, we also see how much Yurio loves his grandfather. It's as though Yurio unlocks some hidden part of himself as he is trying to figure out what Agape really means to him, and the first person to come to his mind is his grandfather. I thought the portrayal of what a strong familial support system could do was inspiring and comforting to watch. In this category, the Italian siblings Michele and Sara could also go. Michele loves Sara to an unhealthy degree, but, anyway, there is a specific quote that Yuuri said that also comes to mind: "I now know what love is and am stronger for it." In this scene, I think he's talking about more than Viktor, he's talking about his friends and his family as well.

Platonic Love: There are a variety of different portrayals of platonic/friendship love. There is obviously Yuri and Phicit who have a very close relationship. You could argue that this is also true for Otabek and Yurio (but it's okay if you want to see them as romantic too!), Otabek is a huge inspiration for Yurio's strength. I feel as though this is the only kind of love that wasn't 100% explored in the show, but we can say that Yuuri's family and instructor were always very loving and supportive towards him and his dream. They never stopped believing in him even when he stopped believing in himself.

Self Love: The most obvious character this type of love was prevalent for is JJ (he even refers to himself as a king, that's how much he loves himself). There's even a scene where JJ literally leans down on the ice to kiss his reflection. He also has an entire song dedicated to himself! Besides JJ's borderline narcissism though, we have Yuuri, Yuuri who struggles so much with loving himself and believing in himself. Yuuri is more of an enemy to himself than a friend in the beginning, as the show goes on however we see him believing in himself more and more! Especially when it comes to wanting to prove to Viktor that he's good enough to be by his side, his confidence in himself increases when he realizes there are so many people around him who also believe in him and love him.

Unrequited Love: We all know who I'm about to talk about. That's right, Georgi! I found his story to be a little hilarious, but besides the obvious comedy that comes with him, he actually shows us what happens when love is not returned. I'd say he's pretty bitter and jealous that the love he has for his ex-girlfriend hasn't returned. We see him borderline having a mental breakdown because of it, it gets to a point where he designs entire routines for this girl! He even falls down because he is so distracted by the fact that she left him all alone halfway through his routine. He feels abandoned and rejected. I think it's important to portray the darker sides of love, or rather, what a lack of love can do to people, quite frankly I have always found unrequited love the most interesting.

Sexual Love: Okay I'm sorry but can we just talk about Chris for one second?! This man is super horny first of all, but he really has no qualms about expressing how sexual he really is. Sex is a huge part of who he is (it's to a point where he orgasms on the ice not once, but twice.), he's so incredibly unhinged and I love him. Besides this, sexual love is actually one of the reasons Yuuri is able to believe in himself and gain confidence. He realizes that he can be sexy, this is a major plot point, it's honestly kinda of wild, he has a whole routine based on Eros! The sexual tension between him and Viktor motivates him.

Fan/Hero Love: Okay let's talk about Minami! The little ball of joy is a wonderful representation of what the love of a fan can do for someone. Yuuri at first borderline dislikes him because he knows how talented Minami is, but this doesn't stop Minami from showering him with praise and telling him that he was one of the big inspirations for why he skates! It's honestly such an adorable exchange when Yuuri stops being jealous of Minami and decides to cheer for him instead, this gave the little guy some confidence, and Yuuri learned something too! He learned how to be compassionate to those who look up to him. Yuuri and Viktor is another example of this, another reason Yuuri wants to become good at skating is he wants to be good enough to have Viktor by his side and he works incredibly close to keep the man that he's praised for most of his life by his side. I think it's another one of the reasons Yuuri becomes so inspired.

Country Love/Pride: Okay, on to everyone's favorite, Phicit! One of the reasons Phicit skates is because he has an entire country cheering for him. He takes on a lot of responsibility. One of my favorite scenes is how focused he was during episode 7, and when he finally ended his FLAWLESS routine he just lays down on the ground and covers his face with both hands (LIKE ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? MY FUCKING HEART!!!) he skates for more than himself, he skates for an entire country that believes in him, and he's just such a beautiful character (yes I'm giving him all the props, Phicit is my favorite boy!) I guess you could say all of the skaters have this kind of love and it's a pretty good reason they all skate but Phicit takes the crown for it. It's heavily enforced in the show for him.

Romantic Love: Okay we're finally at the big one! I think the way romantic love is portrayed is just, beautiful. In the very first episode of the show we watch Yuuri recreate Viktor's skate routine for a childhood friend that he had a huge crush on. When Viktor brings up that he's been rejected before, he gets really angry. Then there's the elephant in the fucking room, Viktor and Yuuri's relationship. Now, you can interpret their love however you want, but me personally, I definitely think they're more than just a coach and a trainee. There are many moents where not only Yuuri, but Viktor is changed by the love that they have of one another. They support each other, and in the scene in episode 9 it's shown that they rely on one another based on the way the ran into each other's arms after being separated for a short while. Viktor kisses Yuuri, they share the same bed, they even have something thats's closest to a proposal. And once again, Yuuri mentions at the end of the first episode that Viktor helped him realize what love is, and how he's stronger for it. I believe Yuuri did the same for Viktor, he helped him out of the creative slump that he was in, and gave him a reason to love skating once again.

This post is very unserious and written in 100% hypothetics. I stated, several times, that I know nothing and any opinion I may have (which I followed up with several times by saying that I don't have an opinion; the only reason I'm on Harry Potter Tik Tok in the first place is because of Percy Jackson) is dogshit.

Moreover, this isn't me agreeing or disagreeing with the points made here, this is me saying it is funny how these two persons have such wildly different views and opinions on Hermione. And I'm not criticizing them either, because their interpretations of her character are based on their lives and beliefs. A Jewish Woman said she sees Hermione as Jewish coded; the only other person who could disagree with that is another Jewish woman, who can't argue with the previous's opinion because it's an opinion. A white man said he sees Hermione as jkr's self insert, and I can't debate that, because I have no knowledge of the series. But you all do.

Been trying out this tiktok filter where you put your birthdate and someone else's birthdate to see if the moon from both of those days match so I put Ash's birthdate August 12. of 2000 and since Eiji is 2 years older than him I started putting random dates to see which one will match with Ash's moon perfectly and came up with this
