#4: Frances Gibbs

Universe: The Glass Scientists (You can read it here, it’s an amazing comic!)

Gender: Genderfluid

Age: 32, born Sept. 17th, 1853 in Marseille, France

Height: 5′9″ (175.25 cm), they are like 90% leg I stg

Eyes: Dark blue

Gibbs is one of the lodgers at the Society for Arcane Sciences, and works as a tailor, with their official title being “Experimental Textilologist”. They fashion clothes out of scientifically peculiar fabrics with even stranger properties (such as magnetic and luminescent cloths) and dabble in other abstract sciences such as sewing with the fabric of time and experimenting with cloth from voodoo dolls.

They are flamboyant and often over-dramatic, but have a composed and sophisticated air and posture. Their state of dress is normally very formal, eccentric, and fashion forward. They fluctuate between wearing gowns, suits, or androgynous clothing, and there is a betting pool within the society on what their sex is (no one has determined a way to actually determine the winning bet). They are helpful and congenial to the other lodgers, often making them fire-resistant and chemical-resistant clothing to keep them safe and lower poor Jekyll’s heart rate.

Frances was born female. Their father, a wealthy Romani silk merchant from France, married their mother, the daughter of a wealthy family of English aristocrats, in a business arrangement. Hoping to gain a son in order to have an heir to the business, they paid little attention to Frances, and sent them to boarding school at an early age. It was during these years at school that Frances learned the basics of sewing and science, and yearned for a higher and more independent education. After years of being tended to by school teachers and nannies, Frances became sick of being silenced and ignored, and ran away, presenting as male and changing their name to avoid being found by their family. 

They made small money as a tailor, and used their new freedom to begin experimenting with different fabrics and chemicals. However, they weren’t accustomed to working independently, and soon found themselves bankrupt and on the streets. It was at this point that a French travelling circus had made its way into the town where Frances worked, and, desperate for a job, Frances offered their services to the circus to make elaborate and fire-proof costumes for the performers. The ring leader agreed, but only under the circumstance that Frances joined the troupe as a performer as well, which Frances did willingly. Frances trained and performed as an acrobat, beginning to present as both male and female in elaborate costumes for each performance, and they ate up the attention that the audience gave to them.

However, the rigorous performances and poor conditions of the circus left them little time to continue their experiments, and Frances disliked being treated like a stage act while being forced to perform incredibly dangerous feats. So, when the circus travelled to England and Frances’ work was discovered by Jekyll (Hyde was the one who actually went to the circus), Frances gladly took up a position at the Society.
