Studio 8: Bumping In
Relocating a creative space is much like moving house, just on a smaller scale.
There is decisions to make about what is worth taking and what should be left behind. What will people be interested in seeing? and ultimately what is going to fit in my car.
One day I’ll hopefully have a space where I can just tidy up and throw open the doors to the public, but for now I am making the move again this year to be a part of 4017 Bayside Open Studios.
Making It Feel Authentic
For me it is important that whilst I’m sharing my artwork in a temporary space that my visitors feel like they’re getting a true insight into how I work. So it means I bring not only my current paintings, my paints, brushes and easel. I also bring some of what inspires me, my older artworks and also my failures. Because as an artist its all a part of my story and the stepping stones to the successes.
Organised Chaos
It took the better part of a day to turn the piles of materials, artwork and furniture into something that resembled a workspace but the effort was definitely worth it. When you visit my corner of Studio 8 I hope you’ll find a burst of colour and joy which infuses so much of my artwork.
Sharing My Techniques
I’m always happy to share my processes with whomever would like to learn. I’m going to be breaking out the sewing machine on both Sundays from 2pm until 4pm so visitors can see how I paint with threads to embellish my artwork.
Get a reminder on Facebook here: GET A REMINDER
On Thursday 19th of October I’ll also be running a still life drawing session where you can experience the fun that comes from combining different materials together when you draw. If you love to play with art supplies then this is definitely the event for you. All materials are provided as part of the ticket cost.
Tickets can be found here: PURCHASE A TICKET
CREATING ARTWORK
Over the time the studio is open I hope I’ll be able to get some new artwork created and be inspired by the amazing artists I’m sharing my space with.
I’m hoping I’m organised enough to share more over the coming few weeks on my blog with you.
Hope to see you there in person if you can make it.

Naming An Artwork
Naming an artwork can be a challenge.
A Name Is So Important
Coming up with something catchy that evokes the story of the artwork and is relatable to its audience can be a challenge.
Songs, Poems or Numbers
I’ve heard of artists using song titles, going with numbers and using favourite lines from literature. For me though my titles often come from the word that pops into my head as I’m painting the work itself. Sometimes the title does end up changing but ultimately its rare that I’m not happy with the final piece and its handle.
I look for the name to spark a memory, lead to a story and prompt a description.
GETTING YOUR ATTENTION
If the goal of an artist is to have the artwork capture the audience’s attention, then the title is a way to dive in to the next level.

Regeneration
Introducing my latest artwork and its a biggie….at 97cm x 152cm its the biggest painting I’ve completed to date and its been an abosolute joy to create.
Inspired by the treeline from a photo I took many years ago at my sisters property in the Yarra Valley in Victoria, the artwork has come to represent much more than its literal landscape that inspired the work.
Title: Regeneration
Medium: Mixed Mediums on Canvas, Stretched and ready to hang.
