there was this trend in the 80s of making horror movies with really prettyboy-type male leads getting absolutely battered and bashed and gored up by cheesy practical effects and gross monsters. bring that back

As someone who has pretty much only seen the Shining and loved it, can you recommend so horror movies?
*cracks knuckles*
aight homie
Also sorry this reply is late i’ve only just stopped screaming bc you chose to ask me for recs and honestly im dead
Ok so the shining is a great start for horror (u have great taste btw) but i don’t wanna just assume that you prefer a certain horror genre over another so imma just scratch the surface of a couple of categories and ones i personally recommend and just kinda go from there–also i apologise if this list gets long..i have way too much time on my hands and am way too passionate about this shit so im sorry that you’ll prob regret asking me in the first place..
I’ll ‘*’ the ones that are my personal favourites
Since the Shining is a classic i’ll start with the classics/well known horror that i loved
-Psycho* (1960)- one of my all time favourite films although i wouldn’t bother with the sequels, i only generally enjoy sequels if an actor that owns my ass is in it but in this case the 2nd and 3rd Psycho films are just…..no
-The Birds (1963)
-Misery (1990)
-Rosemary’s Baby(1968)
-The Exorcist (1973) (Again really couldn’t get with any of the sequels)
- Carrie (1976) -prefer the original to the remake
-Poltergeist (1982) (I didn’t enjoy the sequels and the remake sucked so just stick with the original lol)
-Silence of the Lambs (1991)
-Red Dragon* (2002)
-Creepshow (1982)
- Night of the Living Dead (1968)
-The Devils (1971)
-Dracula (1931) (This film has been redone a million times in a million different ways so basically any Dracula film with Bela Lugosi or Christopher Lee are the ones to pay attention to, Bela Lugosi is my personal fave)
-House on Haunted Hill* (1959) -the remake is a mess
-House of Wax (1953)
-Tales of Terror (1962)
Slasher movies:
-Texas Chainsaw series (I tend to watch the remakes if i’m choosing but all are good also warning in the 2003 remake I believe, there’s a nail breaking sceneand honestly literally nothing makes me squeamish anymore but scene where nailsget broken actually make me want to die oh my fucking god)
-Friday the 13th series (there’s a shit ton. I’d just watch the remake with Jared Padalecki tbh (2009))
-Nightmare on Elm Street (Again there’s a few, my fave is the original w/ Johnny Depp (1984))
-Halloween (1978) again there’s a fuckload and they’re all basically the same
I fuckin love my demon/ghost movies so a few that I thought were good:
-The Last Exorcism 1 & 2* (2010/2013)
- The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
-The Devil Inside* (2012)
-The Rite (2011)
-Devil (2010)
-Demonic (2015)
-The Possession (2012)
-The Entity (1982)
-The Amityville Horror(1979) i prefer the remake (2005) bc Ryan Reynolds
Some horror I personally enjoyed and continuously watch:
-The Descent* (2005)
-The Conjuring* (2013)
-Annabelle (2014)
-Vacancy (2007)
-What Lies Beneath (2000)
-The Eye(2008)
-The Hills Have Eyes 1 & 2* remakes (WARNING rape scene in both movies)
-Evil Dead (2013)* (WARNING mildly disturbing forest violation scene// v brief and not as bad as the original)
-Sinister 1 & 2*
- The Tortured (2010) (WARNING child abuse and a nail breaking scene)
-Insidious 1, 2 & 3
-Orphan (2009)*
-I Spit on Your Grave (2010) (WARNING centered around gang rape but extremely satisfying once BITCHES START DYING. REVENGE CAN BE SO BEAUTIFUL) the sequel isn’t worth watching
-1408 (2007)
-Gothika* (2003)
-The Woman in Black* (2012) (the sequel was utter shit so i wouldn’t bother lmao)
-Oculus* (2013)
-My Bloody Valentine (2009)
-Daybreakers* (2009)
-Wrong Turn 4:Bloody Beginnings
-You’re Next* (2011)
-The Strangers (2008)
-American Mary (2012)
-the original Evil Dead series bc Bruce Campbell
-Hellraiser (1987) (I’d just stick w/ the first one)
-The Uninvited* (2009)
I don’t believe in ‘guilty pleasures’ as such but if there was a category that’s basically ‘pretty bad recent horror films that no one really enjoyed but i watch anyway because it’s better than nothing/daytime tv’ then this would be a list of that…:
-Unfriended (2014)
-Fright Night (2011)
-Curse of Chucky (2013)
-Mama (2013)
-The Babadook (2014)
-the VHS series
-The Quiet Ones (2014)
-Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
-The Grudge (2004)
-The Ring (2002) (just don’t waste your time with the sequels…)
-Devil’s Due (2014)
-Deliver Us From Evil (Eric Bana’s arms are the best thing about this film js)
-The Unborn (2009)
-As Above So Below (2014)
DISCLAIMER really only consult this list if you’re bored or you see them on tv or something…i wouldn’t waste your money buying them
Some J Horror:
-Ju On* (2002)
-Ringu* (1998)
-Noroi (2005)
-Dark Water (2002) there’s an american version (2005) but you already know which one is better..
-Audition (1999)
-Teke Teke* (2009)
-Carved: The Slit Mouthed Woman (2007)
Foreign Horror:
-Dead Snow* (2009) (the sequel is even more ridiculous than the first one and i couldn’t get w it)
-Goodnight Mommy (2014)
-Nosferatu (1922)
-The Devil’s Backbone (2001)
-Eyes Without A Face (1960)
-Inside (2007)
-The Human Centipede (the 1st was ok, the 2nd was dreadful and the 3rd is a trainwreck)
Some horror anime// I found out about these from a rec list i saw on tumblr but can’t find it, but that list is more extensive and prob better for recommendations:
-Another* (2012)
-Deadman Wonderland (2011)
-Corpse Party (2015)
-Shiki (2010)
-Hell Girl (2005)
-Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (2006)
-Yami Shibai (2013)
Not really horror movies but more thriller with creepy vibes that I really enjoyed:
-Se7en* (1995)
-Hide and Seek (2005)
-Silent House (2011) (WARNING child abuse)
-The Gift (2015) (WARNING rape)
-Sixth Sense (1999)
-Vertigo (1958)
-Rear Window* (1954)
-Shutter Island* (2010)
-Cape Fear (1991)
-Breakdown* (1997)
SIDENOTE this list is nowhere near all of the films in these categories but just ones i would recommend as starters. ALSO this list was p much off the top of my head as were the trigger warnings, i don’t know what particular things you may be sensitive to, so if you want me to be sure about certain trigger warnings about certain films then please let me know and i will be more than happy to double check for you beforehand- the last thing i want to do is expose anyone to any triggers because of a film i have recommended and forgotten to mention any tw beforehand!! (this applies to Sam as well as anyone reading this list pls don’t hesitate to ask me)
I hope that leaves you with enough to go off for now? :’) Thankyou for asking me omfg this gave me something to do and actually took my mind off things for a bit, so thankyou
