Beware, first world problem incoming.

In Germany, we have a thing called Pfand on our plastic bottles, Soda cans et cetera. You buy them and there's a 25 cent plus on the price, and after you're done, you can bring the empty bottles/cans back to the store where they have machines that scan the bar codes and take them back. You also get those 25 cents per bottle back (with glass beer bottles it's eight per bottle btw) so naturally, we collect all the cans and bottles to bring them back to get our pfand money back. That is essentially to prevent waste and assure that the recources can be recycled.

Now I have a polish water bottle at home. There is no Pfand on polish water bottles. It's standing on my nightstand, it's empty, and I do not know what to do with it, because throwing it away feels unnatural but I won't get Pfand for it because it doesn't have the code. What do I do?

What that implies is the gradual degeneration of brains and the tendency to consume without thinking. Nowadays, the standard of a good book is that it doesn't have a consistent plot, fleshed out characters or good world building, but it's loaded with "romance" which is very superficial in most cases, and of course smut (bdsm type of thing obviously, because shame on you if you're okay with vanilla sex)

That is so people can consume these books without having to really think about anything. I stand by my opinion of It's not a good book if you didn't need to stop and think about it at least a handful of times. But people are too lazy to think, so we standardize shit writing with the same tropes over and over and over again. It's easier to digest than say, a book that mirrors the society of its time by cleverly incorporating it into characters and storyline.

It's the same pattern everywhere. Other media? Look at movies and series. Netflix has managed to land several hits with really mediocre series that make no sense whatsoever, don't have an interesting plot or good characters (RIVERDALE FFS) but people love them nonetheless, because it's about consuming media, not about thinking.

Since the Enlightenment, entertainment media have steadily lowered their standards as consumers have lowered their expectations. The majority of people are satisfied with colorful pictures and simple, clear formulations. God forbid an author or filmmaker uses symbolism or metaphors these days, most readers or viewers wouldn't even notice.

Call me crazy, but I've noticed that a lot of Rhysand stans have a tendency to like overall shitty books that are just regurgitated YA novels, aka booktok books of the months. Not entirely sure what that implies but I think its interesting
