2036: Lyric Morales

Why Does Lyric Matter?

Lyric stays true to herself despite being one of the only Deaf, Black individuals in her community. She looks for the positive in every situation, and isn’t afraid to voice her needs. In addition, she learns to be organized and stay on top of things as she frequently travels- whether it be the long bus ride to her school each morning, or to another country when she visits her friends and family in Toronto.

I finished the next GOTY OC!! She will be posted sometime tomorrow morning, East TN time

Are you going to continue you’re American girl OC series?

Yes!! I’m actually working on one right now :)

They’re coming out slower right now because I’m a stem double major, and helping my school establish a NAMI chapter, as well as a disability pride club.

But this one should be done in the next week? My chem prof lets me draw/read/whatever while everyone else is taking quizzes/tests because I take them in my campus’s disability center, so suddenly I have some free time!!

I also have a few photos in the process of editing.

At sunset, Cécile and Papa slipped from their quiet house onto Dumaine Street. They walked a few blocks in silence. Cécile noticed that many houses were dark, with their shutters fastened tight. It seemed that yellow fever had sent half the neighborhood fleeing out of town.

I’ve got an ongoing project expanding Cécile’s collection based on what she wore in he books, but was never produced by American Girl. My latest creation is this blue dress and lace-trimmed apron illustrated in both Troubles for Cécile and in her paper doll set, which refers to this as her "work dress". Cécile wears this outfit when her brother Armand becomes ill with yellow fever, and she helps care for him. Armand is one of thousands of people who contracted the illness that devastated New Orleans in 1853.

In the first illustration, visible behind her are the clouds of smoke from burning tar, which at the time was believed to combat and clean the "bad air" that people assumed caused the disease. What they didn't realize is that they were right, but for the wrong reason. Yellow fever is a virus spread by mosquitoes. Burning tar makes bad-smelling smoke, and mosquitoes don't like the smell any more than humans do, so it actually can repel mosquitoes. It would be another few decades until people understood the true cause of yellow fever, and how viruses are transmitted.

I've been wanting to make this iconic dress for my dear Cécile for so long, but tracking down a good match for the fabric was surprisingly difficult! I could find blue with white stripes, and blue with a white diamond shaped print, but nothing with both stripes and a pattern. I did eventually get lucky enough to stumble across this fabric. The dress itself is pretty basic and lacks a lot of elaborate details, making it super easy to sew. The apron as well came together quickly and easily.

Why Does Austin Matter?

In addition to being undeniably cool, Austin shows how girls can live WITH their disability. She’s neither ashamed, or overly positive, and still goes through all the trails and tribulations of early teenhood, whether it be friendship troubles, or sports anxiety.

Austin’s Vibes!!

Austin had a pastel aesthetic that focuses more on texture. She loves candles, perfume and body lotion, because she can smell them, and crystals because she can see the sunlight reflect off them. She loves all genres of music, and collects fluffy stuffed animals. She’s very sporty, and plays goalball at her boarding school. On the weekends, she and her friends get a pass to go to the local candy store to stock up on sweets!! Austin loves how the store smells.

I got the cool donation presorter at my job to start hiding all the potentially American Girl things that come through in our warehouse!! Now I get to look at them before they get priced and put out. Is it allowed? Ehhh. But I’ve found a lot of cool PC items, and things I pass up on get more reasonable prices.

So on today’s episode of perks of being a thrift store employee- I got Samantha’s PC bed frame for $9!!

The only thing is that we had to throw out the bedding. It was molding and possibly infested (disgusting).

So I’m looking for her bedding!! It can be partial or tlc (just not a biohazard). I have a mattress I can use on the bed- though it would be nice to have hers considering it’s fancy. I’m totally willing to pay and fund shipping.

I’m also potentially looking for one of the metal balls on the top of her bed posts. The bed came in with all four, but somewhere along the lines one fell off. I don’t expect anything to come of this request, and it’ll probably turn up in the warehouse but just thought I’d ask!!

Love to hate her, but she came through my thrift store today with her accessories (they’re in her backpack- not shown!!). When pricing expensive items, we divide the original price by three, so she’ll probably be around 32 dollars!! Such a steal, I couldn’t resist.
