a big part of it is from post-bw and going into bw2. Hilda did a re-run of all the gyms after getting out of the hospital and hung out with the gym leaders a lot. It was pretty much an open secret within the league that Alder had offered her a position as Champion so she wanted to get to know the rest of the league before she decided and get their opinions. plus, you know, a lot of them seemed cool and were really helpful with all that Plasma bullshit.

She truly, genuinely likes everyone she works with. They are a bunch of esoteric weirdoes and she wouldn't have it any other way. And they've been awesome to her coming into the League.

That's also a big part of why she was so reluctant to involve anyone when Hilbert went missing. Beyond Bianca and Cheren, who she knew would be crazy worried, the rest of the League has their own shit going on and nobody wants to deal with fucking Plasma again. If Hilda can just deal with it before it becomes an issue this time, it'll be fine, right? Right?

Hilda would kill and die for the league. Even if they test her fucking patience every single day.

She's in no mood to argue. A round trip flight is the least she can do for as short a notice as it is. Especially if she was demanding a gym leader's performance out of him. It was no small feat to make that transition, especially not after coming out of retirement.

"Blueberry, yeah. It's a sister school to some old academy in Paldea, I guess? Which also has some kind of fruit name." Still sounded rather stupid, if you asked her. Maybe it was the public school kid in her, but who the hell would take 'Blueberry Academy' seriously?

"They've got a crazy battle program there, I guess. Some of 'em are pretty talented. I've got one of the students doing a League Internship to fill Iris' spot. Clay's kid." Speaking more to herself than to Grimsley at this point.

She runs through the roster in her mind, foot tapping impatiently. How many was that now? Enough to keep the amount of challengers down to a reasonable number.

"Lenora already agreed to help out, too. With you, that's two for Castelia, then we can split off..." She thinks aloud, "If I have Iris fill in somewhere in the southeast, that should create a couple good routes for challengers..."

Still so much work to be done. Advertising the changes, finalizing locations, informing the Rangers Union so they can keep the routes clear... It was going to be one hell of a summer, wasn't it?

Oh, man, she's tired. She's been arguing with the suits about what to do this year nonstop for the past week. Half of the gym leaders would only have time for all of the expected challengers if they literally didn't sleep. Which, evidently, was just fine by the administrative officials. Every other solution she'd proposed had either taken so long to go through approval that it wouldn't even be effective in time or were just outright rejected.

"That fucking school they just built make the expected numbers for this summer skyrocket. I can't get a new real gym set up in time, much less the two we'd need to give Burgh and Elesa a reasonable schedule. So you and Iris are my stopgap right now."

in this house we love and value respectful ttrpg players who contribute to the well being of the campaign by carrying some of the workload (art, inventory management, note taking, snack duty, scheduling, hosting, etc.) and ease the burden on the DM

my biggest beef with d&d (beyond hasbro being hasbro) genuinely is just that like. it's not... easy or even Feels Good to run without a lot of legwork. Like a lot. It puts so much on a DM in a way that is like. Straight up unsustainable for 99% of people. It's not surprising that people can't find a DM. Nobody wants to DM because d&d makes it so goddamn difficult and it doesnt have any really Good methods of player contribution in a way that can reasonably lessen that burden due to the structure of the game. tl;dr theres a reason I refuse to run d&d games over indies anymore, and also bribe your DM, they fucking deserve it. They are putting in overtime for you. Buy them a fucking pizza.
