listen I love Soriku as much as the next person (as long as the next person is a huge Soriku fan) and I’m not trying to undermine the main point of this post, since I definitely agree that Riku is in love with Sora and is going to continue to be central to the story, but--
I keep seeing people reference Riku’s “no need, got my own”, and I really, really want someone more fluent in Japanese than me to check this line, because to me the JP scene sounds like it goes like this:
Aqua: I struggled my way to the far shore of this dark ocean, earnestly continuing to wait for rescue. But no rescue ever came. As I had lost my keyblade, I had no way to turn back and fight the heartless. Therefore, all I could do was earnestly wait. [the camera focuses on Riku] Can you understand this loneliness? [Riku gasps] Can you understand the anxiety and fear? I will share the despair of the one locked deep within [my] heart with you, too! (心の奥底に閉じ込められた存在の悲しみをーおまえたちにも分けてやろう)
Riku: There’s no need. I have enough. (その必要はない 間に合っている)
The scene then immediately changes to Riku and Repliku.
The fact that Aqua specifically mentions “the one locked deep in [her] heart” and that the shot then cuts to the internal scene of Riku and Repliku makes me think that these lines might refer to the fact that Riku does, in fact, have someone locked away in his heart at this point, rather than to his emotional state. It could also be both - maybe Riku’s saying he’s at capacity on despair and heart-prisoners? This is why I’d like a second opinion, haha.
Literally just saw a gamerant article about how riku's character arc is done and he is probably going to take on a more mentor like role for yozora who is now going to act as sora's "rival" and Riku is gonna be a bit less relevant....why does literally everybody think Riku is done as a character??? Cannot wait for the next game announcement to confirm Riku is still the deuteragonist of kh lol
Lmao well that article certainly aged like sour milk after khmom came out...unless this is a new one in which case...even more yikes.
The reason people think Riku is done as a character is because they can’t see beyond his redemption/darkness arc- which is for the most part complete. But Riku has a whole other thread to his character that is far more fundamental to understanding him and is still unresolved. I think there are two main things about Riku that people miss and therefore can’t imagine a major role for him:
1. Riku is gay. He is in love with Sora. And this isn’t just something incidental that has no bearing on the story, it is actually arguably the most important thing to understand about Riku as a character because it makes sense of his actions and motivations from the very beginning. If you don’t understand this, you don’t understand Riku, period. Riku is keeping all these feelings locked up and hidden from Sora, and it’s /painful/ for him. “All that’s left in my heart is misery and despair, and now you can share it!” “There’s no need. Got my own.” This wasn’t just a throwaway line. Combined with the fact that Sora is simultaneously stating his own confusion about romantic love and also not being able to define what Riku is to him, not to mention Sora losing memories of his sacrifice, I think it’s clear that Riku’s feelings will not remain hidden forever. Not from the audience, and not from Sora. The failure to see that Riku is in love with Sora and/or not believing his feelings will actually be explored is why people can’t see where the story could possibly go for Riku.
2. Riku is the light. There is a reason Riku being “the light” is being so heavily hinted at through the entire series, reaching absurd levels of obvious in kh3, only to be seemingly ignored by the narrative (and consequently missed by the audience) This is a quintessential narrative set up, and I can almost guarantee it will have a major payoff. I don’t have the answer for what exactly this will be, but I strongly believe it will play a huge role in his upcoming arc, just as learning to accept the darkness was a fundamental part of his first arc. As Nomura said all the way back in CoM, the question of /what/ Riku is has yet to be revealed- but it will.
people actually talking about Lio like he’s chill or tsundere or ANYTHING but absolutely gone on Galo baffle me
really?
really?
Lio “the mech isn’t cool enough for you? let me fix it!” Fotia? Lio “oh, you need your Matoi? I got you, babe” Fotia? Lio “I’m literally being crushed to death, but here, take my flames, you need them more” Fotia? Lio “you wanted the mech to be named Galo de Lion? Absolutely, anything you want” Fotia? Lio “Let’s burn the world together” Fotia?
do you ever think about the fact that the music playing during The Bonding Moment™ was called “to go home” and then seven seasons later Lance and Keith form the wings of voltron
Our DM forgot that we have no Magnus Burnsides in our party, so they legit spent an hour trying to convince us to go down a path that is Clearly Dangerous.
I think we’re way too sensible to be adventurers XD
I’ve seen people worrying about this and I am here to reassure you that there is no way Keith could be 21 if Lance is still 17
that’s right
I’m not leaving the math to Pidge
Things We Know:
Keith’s birthday is October 23rd
Lance’s is July 28th.
They were in the same class at the Garrison.
At the start of the series, if we’re going by guidebook ages, Keith is 18 and Lance is 17.
The only way all these things can be true is if Keith was born in October of the calendar year preceding Lance’s birthday. This makes Keith nine months older than Lance when the Blue Lion was found and everyone went off to space. That’s right, there wasn’t even a full year between them before all this crazy time dilation business! (This also puts the start of the series somewhere between October and July, since any later than that would have had either both of them being 18, or Lance 18 and Keith 19, but that’s neither here nor there at the moment.)
I don’t have the source, but I’ve seen people claiming that someone(?) involved in the show has stated that Keith was 19 prior to the start of season 6. Okay, let’s take that into account! Given that Lance isn’t a full year younger than Keith, he must have turned 18 before Keith turned 19. Therefore (assuming that Keith and Krolia had some way of accurately measuring time in Earth years on the back of a space whale light-years from our solar system, which is a whole other question) if you assume that the two years put Keith at 21, that means he started at 19, and Lance would be 18 already. It’s even possible that Lance turned 19 already, too, depending on how much time passed after Keith’s birthday!
In conclusion, there is no way their current age gap can be four years. It is, if we take the series at its word, two years and nine months, and could in fact be less than that, given that Keith and Krolia’s equipment on that mission seemed to mostly consist of knives and a brand-new wolf friend, neither of which are known for their timekeeping skills.
