Yukari blinked, then smiled. “Of course!” she replied, her face turning into one of feigned joy. When the other had said that all Youkai craved the energy of a human, she had clenched her teeth, but retained her smile from earlier. Why? Why was it so common, the existence of Youkai who ate humans and thought nothing of it? Both humans and Youkai were sapient beings - both could exist peacefully, if any willed it.

But no; apparently, some centuries ago, the Lunarians had destroyed the chance of them living peacefully - manipulating the genes of the Youkai, who then were still kami, into shallow, pale imitations of their former selves, who wished nothing more but to destroy humans. Over the centuries, time had slowly fixed it, with some of them even moving beyond their habit, but the genes still remained for some more centuries, from her memories. But once the Youkai had become pure once more - become Kami, rather than the impure beings they were transformed into - then they had stopped eating humans.

Yukari had lived to see that, and the subsequent revolution against the Lunarians. It was brilliant.

The other Yukari looked around the corner as she wiped some blod from her mouth and sighed, “can’t a lady eat in peace?”
