In Mulan, Mulan's father is never seen consulting the ancestor spirits, but Mulan is. Now typically from my understanding the head of the household is the one who is in charge of consulting the spirits of ancestors, so with Mulan doing it and not her father it is just another way that she is diverging from traditional norms and usurping the place of her father in the family both spiritually and militarily.
