Oh, it’s just me in my happy place after an eventful morning. I haven’t posted many pictures of my face lately. Partly, I guess, because my hair is growing out and my skin is having re-entry culture shock and I feel like I don’t look my best. Partly, also, because I’ve been doing deep inner work and taking pictures of my face hasn’t felt resonant with that work. But this does. My face, with its acne and blotchy redness. My weird shaggy hair. My hairy legs and busted pedicure. Enjoying a moment in the water, beaming with joy and gratitude despite 3.45am wakeups and dogs that go missing as they chase bush turkeys. A year ago, I wouldn’t have stopped to have a swim. I would have raced home to cry and panic and berate myself. My current favourite thing is walking the dogs along the river. We walk down along the grass, get to this sandy shore and have a splash, then do a slow walk back along the path. Even though it’s the same route, every day is different thanks to the tides and the sky and who is out playing on the river. I spend a lot of time teaching Poppy to watch the birds, not lunge at them, and reminding Winston that he needs to walk on the left. But then we figure it out and keep walking. Coming back to Queensland has been wonderful. Hard. Some days I feel like I should never have left. Some days I feel like I’ve made a huge mistake. I’m caught between remembering to rest and recover and feeling desperate for the next chapter of my life to start. I’m on a threshold, in a liminal space, the in-between. It is both the most uncomfortable place I’ve ever been and exactly where I need to be.
