From my experience with several friends who are Eva fans otherwise not familiar with the genre i conclude that the way they see mecha fans is as toddlers who giggle while watching an Elsagate-esque show with several multi-colored gundams dancing around a turd and playing with toy robots
That said, the way many mecha shows are advertised really doesn't help the situation, neither does the way we often describe them when trying to get people into the genre.
do you know what was the origin of "unlike most mecha, (x) is about the people"
if you mean the meme, it was making fun of NGE fans who got into mecha through it and would confidently repeat more or less that exact phrasing without watching other series. if you mean who said it first, I don't think there's necessarily one specific place it started

I need an Origin-esque anime about Cima Garahau's past. Her and her harem's space pirate adventures must be way more fun than Gato's uninspired bullshit.
