Questionnaire of Laruku from B-PASS magazine (March. 1995)

Another translation of a translation from Russian. This "interview" was translated for Russian l'arc fan-club in 2018. I haven't found any other English translations on the net, so I decided that it will be interesting for you to read something like this. All credits are down below, big thank you to the original translator, what a great woman! 

The original Russian text has some typos plus English isn't my first language, that's why text might seem a bit of strange. About special signs: (translator's note) - notes of an original translator; "*" - my own notes; (?) - neither me nor the original translator understood the context. Please, enjoy!

Interview:“HYDE: Modern pirate”. InRock. 8th of March, 2021

Right below there is an exclusive interview with HYDE for Russian magazine “InRock”. In original article there is also a brief description of HYDE’s projects. Hope that you will enjoy it. 

2020 was a hard year for the whole world; I’m sure that you should’ve canceled or delayed a lot of events. How have you spent your time during the pandemic?

I started to live more measured life in order to reboot myself, in some sort of. Since I couldn’t go on tour, I’ve spent more time on composing songs. But for now, I can’t say for sure when the new releases will be out, because right now I have no opportunity perform live [in their support] how I would like to.

For 30 years of your successful career you’ve been constantly creating new “you” and your new style. How do you manage to be loyal to yourself and have some changes in the same time?

Recently I concluded that it’s all thanks to my voice. I consider that if a person is a vocalist – he’s a vocalist from the moment when he was born. Sure, you can improve your skills with practice, but a lot of people can’t sing, no matter how much they train.

When you’ve just started your solo career, was it easy to work alone or harder without a band’s support?

[To work alone] can be both good and bad. Because in the band you need to consider opinion of all of the members. For example, if you decorate a living room, common space in a house, where all of the dwellers have equal right to decide, everybody can give an advice about furniture, technique, decoration… That means that the combination of the outcome might be so amazing that I could have never imagined if I made it all on my own. It means that I can’t decorate it according my own taste though. For example, you live in a house with a light living room, but you would like to see it in dark gothic shades. And even if the living room looks very cool, you still are going to muse about at least tiny, but your own room that you can decorate however you want. That’s what working with solo project is. It isn’t necessarily hard, but when you work alone, it’s difficult to impress yourself. Sure, in head I already have a plan, a draft, that I can evolve into ideal song. And in a band, there are many surprises, you can never be sure what the result will be in the end.  

In your early solo works there are a lot of slow and melodic songs, and now it seems that you prefer to create heavier and more rock compositions. Is there a chance that you will return to your old style or even find your new way?

I really want to make something in acoustic style, like in my first album. It’s interesting, how it would sound if I composed it now.

You fully lay yourself out on a stage; are you practicing or do you have any precautionary measures in order to save both of your voice and body during the performance?

Actually, I don’t practice anything in particular. I’m just trying to live without a stress. Oh! Now, when I thought about it, I understand that maybe concerts ARE my way for stress relief.

In your opinion, which life lesson is the best and well learned that you got during your work both in a band and solo project?

Nothing will be done if there is no actual leader. (Laughs.)

Your performance in native Wakayama was so touching. Especially “Memories”, it couldn’t be listened without tears. What memory from your childhood was the best and, if you could change something in it, what would it be?

I was very lucky to have good friends and live a carefree life. I can honestly say that I would change nothing in it.

You have very modern and fashionable style of clothes. How would you describe it to those who haven’t seen photos?

Modern pirate that wears mostly black.

The decoration of the scene and musicians’ masks remind me of Slipknot. What’s your attitude towards comparison with other famous performers?

I like Slipknot, but I don’t think that we look like them. If the reason is in us wearing masks, then there are a lot of other bands like that. Of course, it’s complicated to be fully unique. But I think that making our masks light up is pretty unusual, isn’t it?

Russian fans were very delighted to see you collaborating with Yoshiki and Miyavi that are also popular here. What’s your experience in work with them?

Both of them are outstanding and strong [musicians] for sure, that’s why working with them was a big honor for me, source of strengths and inspiration. I want to stay that kind of artist for them, with whom it will be a pleasure to work with.

In which themes of songs are you interested right now? What’s the inspiration?

Earlier I was interested in themes that are connected with death. Now, I think, I’m more interested in questions of the modern society, its problems and conflicts. After I managed to live in USA for some time, it’s easier to see differences with Japan [and write about them].

In Russia you have big loving fanbase. Do you plan to perform one day in our country? What are the conditions?

I don’t have any specific plans right now, but in Russia there are a lot of pretty girls, that’s why I definitely want to go there. It will be easier to do so when I stabilize my career as a musician, and there will be enough of my fans [in Russia], in order for me to be invited to play in your country. So, I will do my best.

What massage would you send to your Russian fans?

Thank you for supporting me all of the time. Even though I don’t have a lot of opportunities to come, you have a special place in my heart. I hope to come to Russia soon.
