Listen as much as Neil’s big mouth and hot temper gets the Foxes into trouble, the times that he goes off on a rant in defense of his team (especially in defense of Kevin) are so important and necessary. 

Like, on Kathy’s show, Kevin needed someone to speak up and defend him. Andrew defends him physically and uses distraction to deflect Riko’s attention, but Kevin needed someone to defend him as an Exy player, as an athlete struggling to reclaim his spot at the top. And there is nobody better suited to do that than Neil, who has suspected the truth that Kevin surpasses Riko in both talent and skill for years now and has the knowledge necessary to knock Riko down a peg. 

Sure, the consequences of Neil coming to his defense scared the shit out of him afterwards, but it was so incredibly necessary to both Kevin’s confidence and his growth that somebody break him out of that mindset that Riko would always be better than him. 

Neil’s words come at a cost for all of them (RIP Seth) but Kevin wouldn’t have gotten to where he is if he didn’t have someone like Neil who so fiercely defends and believes in him. The whole team wouldn’t have gotten to where they are if Neil hadn’t decided to start believing in them too.

aftg fandom shout out!!!

PSA: lots of rambling and kinda just word vomit

Anyone else ever just feel incredibly grateful to be a part of the aftg fandom? We are literally so lucky to have such a close and small fandom that creates such amazing content nonstop. I mean, there are way bigger book fandoms that I am a part of but none of them have this many people that are so active within the fandom.

And not only do we have so much content being made but it's all good??? like?? how are we so blessed to have this little community of artists and writers and creators who are willing to spend their time making content for us.

Like there's no other book or show I can think of with a fan base so dedicated to what they make. I mean, for a lot of us our aftg blogs are our lives. I can't imagine my life without this tumblr and my instagram. But, I also can't imagine dedicating so much of my time and energy to any other books. I love trc or s&b or soc but none of those are something I could make content for 24/7 and I feel like that's how a lot of our incredible bloggers and fandom masterminds(lol) feel.

I just think we are also so lucky to have found ourselves such a great book fandom to be involved in and all you creators deserve a huge thank you for making our fandom what it is.

I reference stakes several times in my meta and have a few more meta planned with them, so I figured I’d create a master post explaining how I came up with the stakes. And create a list of them.

I don’t think I’ve heard anyone talk about it before, but I really love Nora’s writing style in how unique it is about revealing and describing things. We didn’t know neil’s natural hair and eye color until the end of the Raven king. Before that, it would mention him checking his roots all the time as he made sure none of it showed, but we were never told what color it actually was until it became a permanent part of his appearance. We didn’t know his height until the king’s men when compared to an opposing backliner. I know it’s easy to forget, but we didn’t actually know that his father was named Nathan, or that Lola was a person that existed (+ everyone else in Nathan’s inner circle, or that he even had an inner circle) , until their first scenes where they’re present. There are a lot more instances where this happens in the series, and I haven’t actually encountered another book that’s done this before and it’s really interesting.

It’s not a bad strategy, keeping Neil to distract Kevin. Because when Kevin’s attention is on Neil, he’s less focused on Edgar Allen and the Moriyamas. And if Neil is Kevin’s new Exy project, then Kevin isn’t as likely to harass Andrew over his wasted potential.

It’d be a great strategy, really, if those were Andrew’s only reasons.

Unfortunately…

Neil is interesting. He’s a problem. He’s a lost cause who wants to run from everything except Exy. And if Andrew lets Neil run, he’ll never solve him. Andrew said he would, didn’t he? He keeps his word.

“You’re lying,” Neil said at last, because he needed that to be the truth. “Kevin hates me.” “Or you hate him,” Andrew said. “I can’t decide. Your loose ends aren’t adding up.” “I’m not a math problem.” “But I’ll still solve you.”

He can’t let Neil run, or he’ll never know why Neil isn’t afraid of him. He’ll never know how Neil is able to see through him. Or what Neil finds of worth in him…in Neil’s jealousy over Andrew’s protection of Kevin…in his belief that Andrew could be something.

Of all things, why does the soul crushing conviction that you are nothing have to be one of the things they have in common? Why does that knowledge carry greater meaning than a value he can plug in for ‘x’ in understanding Neil?

And then Andrew really gets himself in trouble…

“We were just talking about you,” Riko said. “With your fists, it seems,” Andrew said. “Don’t touch my things, Riko. I don’t share.” He reached back without looking and pushed at Neil’s shoulder. Neil took the hint and skirted around Andrew and Riko.

He claims Neil as one of his, even if Neil doesn’t understand what that means yet. 

Andrew knows Neil won’t survive if he runs. With bloody knuckles and shattered glass, Andrew doesn’t know if he’ll survive if Neil stays.

He knows better than this. But there are cracks in his apathy.

- “I’m not in trouble. Oh captain, my captain.”

- “Neil, you wouldn’t know what to do with a god-fearing minister. You can barely stand to be around Renee. There’s no way you could last a sit-down with Luther. He’d end up exorcising you when you snapped.”

- “A tear for your discomfort” Andrew said, completely unsympathetic. 

- “Is your learning curve a horizontal line?”

- “What about Abby?” “You can’t bandage a zombie and she wouldn’t let us execute the infected”

- Andrew refused on the grounds he wouldn’t wish you on anyone except a mortician.

- “What are your doing with a Maserati?” “Driving it”

- “The only trick is figuring out how to pry Kevin away from the court” “I have knives,” Andrew reminded him.

alright here's the not at all finished, very Sketchy sketch of the first page of the aftg manga/comic/graphic novel/whatever the hell i impulsively decided to work on and that i'm scared shitless of thinking about in terms of the amount of effort and time it'll take me.

like this alone took me 7 hours (without counting the hour i spent trying to design neil's face and the other hour i spent researching stadium pictures). and then i'll have to do the actual lineart, detailing and shading and then i'll have to scan it and edit it.... perhaps death is a smarter decision to take than doing this when i'd drop to the floor crying if it doesn't turn out Perfect 😃

I would have to say my favorite character of all time is Andrew Minyard, my favorite *main character* of all time is Neil Josten. There’s an important distinction.

Andrew is one of the best characters I’ve ever seen written. His moral compass is skewed but it also makes perfect sense once you understand him. He’s deeply complex and layered and for someone always portrayed as strong he’s also kind of a mess. His past is so disturbing but it makes his values in different relationships clear and healthy and he communicates that well. He’s violent and dangerous and GOOD to his core, he protects everyone and he had an impossible hand dealt to him in life but somehow he makes it work. He has major trauma and ptsd and touch aversion and he works to better himself, he has one of the best relationships with the team psychiatrist and one of the most interesting sibling/family dynamics out there. Add to that the fact that he’s funny and he’s the best goalkeeper in his sport without even trying and you have one of the most thought provoking and beloved characters of all time.

Neil as the *main character* was absolute perfection. He’s a liar and a fraud and he has little to no remorse for his actions especially at first. He loves one thing so strongly (Exy) but has one of the best character developments ever written as he learns to trust the Foxes and Andrew. Watching him fall in love was comedy gold given his obliviousness and demisexuality. He’s so lovable right from the start and he’s FUNNY as fuck. He’s also brave and he grows so much over the course of three books as he learns to protect others and stand up for himself. He’s such a great narrator and his character is so consistent and simultaneously unhinged. His backstory pulls you in and makes you keep reading long past any plot holes or timeline inconsistencies. He’s so instantly lovable and was the perfect pov to experience these books from.
