Weight of Living - GenRai
GenRai Week 2017 Day 4: Bodyguard
Man it’s probably gonna be December before I get my shit together and get all the prompts for this week filled.
So I interpreted this as more “failed bodyguard” than an actual bodyguard situation. Sorry. XD

Seven days had passed since they’d gotten the news, and Genma still couldn’t wrap his head around it. Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage, the man he’d pledged to serve and protect at all costs, was gone. It didn’t make sense - none of it made sense. Minato was one of the strongest shinobi Genma had ever met; brave, fearless, willing to kill and die for his people. He was the epitome of a true leader, and Genma had looked up to him, admired him, wanted to be just like him… but he had failed him.
He was one of the Hokage’s Guard Platoon. He was supposed to protect him, but Minato had died on his watch.
Minato’s son had been orphaned on his watch.
He didn’t think he could ever forgive himself for that.

GenRai Week 2017 Day 3: Mission/Training

Warnings: Third Shinobi War
Three months, six days, and five hours into the war, and Genma was beginning to regret his decision to become a shinobi. It was a strange thought - since he was little and he had heard his mother’s stories about her life as a shinobi, he had always known that he wanted to be just like her, saving the world one S-rank mission at a time. Of course, reality had not lived up to the expectations, but despite that, he had always known that he was exactly where he was meant to be.
Until he found himself on the battlefield, a child thrown into an adult’s war, dodging another barrage of kunai as he darted through the trees.
Skirmishes along the border were not an uncommon thing these days, but they usually only lasted a few hours before one side called a retreat, but the battle with the Land of Earth along the border of the Land of Fire had stretched on for three days now and showed no signs of stopping. He’d been separated from his squad hours ago, and while trying to find them again had run into the group of Hidden Stone shinobi that were now chasing him through the forest. He could hear them laughing behind him as he fled, calling him a coward, but he had never been stupid - he was outnumbered, and to turn around and attempt to fight would only end in his premature death.
He had no intentions of dying today. Not for years, really, if he could help it, and definitely not in this war he was decidedly too young for.

Genrai week day 5: scars
Read it on ao3 if you want
Summary: The shinobi life was not an easy one. Genma and Raidou have different scars, endured different hardships and fought different battles. They were still reeling and damaged and cracked. But they had each other.
Raidou had always worn his scars without an inch of fear or a care in the world.
He never covered them up even when the war turned him inside out and shoved him back into Konoha with a raw angry wound carved across half his face like veins and the weight of a thousand deaths on his fragile shoulders.
His scars laced around his torso and reached out like stretching, grasping fingers from his left hip to his waist and spread to mid stomach.
It ached when it rained. Mocking him. The acid had fried Raidou’s skin to almost beyond recognition.

Raido did not enjoy the annual Rinne Festival. It was a bothersome affair, overcrowded and noisy, and this year, he had drawn the short straw and found himself on guard duty. So while his boyfriend was off looking way too damn good in his yukata and likely getting drunk with their friends, he was stuck winding his way through the crowds, keeping an eye out for trouble.
It was silly, really - the most trouble they’d ever had during the festival was a drunken brawl that had started in a bar and ended in the nearest alley, or a child stealing a mask. Still, the Hokage wanted to be prepared, and she had mandated that at least five shinobi be on duty during the festival. He supposed he couldn’t blame her, but he had planned to spend this time with Genma, and he was a little irritated that his day off had been stolen from him.
His irritation faded, however, when he saw Genma coming toward him, cheeks flushed from the cold and what was likely one too many cups of sake consumed, senbon curiously absent and grinning from ear to ear. The sight was reminiscent of a festival several years ago, two years into their relationship, the last time he’d had guard duty during the festival. Raido had been a lot younger then, only twenty-three, but he still remembered it as clearly as if it had happened yesterday.

Genrai Week Day 4: Bodyguard
It’s on ao3 too
The characters Shun and Ume aren’t mine and belong to the wonderful writers of ANBU Legacy and if you haven’t read it you need to. Right now.
Summary: fresh from the Third Shinobi War, Genma finds himself sitting next to Raidou Namiashi’s bedside despite having barely spoken to each other and really needing to be in a hospital bed himself.
Genma moved around on the plastic chair, clearly made for people who hadn’t been almost blown to smithereens a few days prior.
He’d been in the thick of the fighting and the furthest platoon from a medic tent. His two squad mates had been killed and Genma’s body had been pummelled with what felt like every scrap of debris the explosion had to offer.
He wasn’t sure who had grabbed him and practically dumped him on the nearest field medic but all anyone could do was bandage up the worst of it and keep going.
The neglect of his injuries was what had landed him in the hospital practically the second he stepped back into the Konoha.
The nurses had grumbled over the injuries, they would all scar. All of them from the ones covering his legs to ones that had done their best to scrape most of the skin off his chest and arms and the few wounds that now decorated his face.
The only reason he wasn’t laid out on a bed himself was due to sheer stubbornness alone.
Genma peered over at the bed his was sitting next to.
Raidou’s face was heavily bandaged as was his neck and chest. The last week of the war had fucked them all over it seemed. And some worse than others.

Genrai Week Day 3: Mission/Training
Read on ao3 if that’s your jam
Genma’s tanuki mask is inspired by the wonderful ANBU Legacy. Do yourself a favour and read it. It’s wonderful.
Summary:“The life of a shinobi was no easy one, but if Raidou was what he came home to every time, it made everything seem worth it.”Genma gets hurt on a mission, but Raidou eases the damage.
Genma dived to the left landing on his hands, narrowly avoiding a hastily thrown boulder. He let the momentum carry him over into a roll and crouched.
He couldn’t use any more jutsu, his chakra levels already too low. A discarded kunai lay a metre from him, discarded in a patch of grass. His own holsters were empty not, that the other shinobi was any better off.
Genma jumped to the side, grabbing the kunai with one hand and flipped himself upright just as the Iwa-nin charged at him.
The shinobi tried to punch him and Genma pulled himself out of the way of the chakra-infused blow.
He twisted himself coming to face the ninja’s back as the punch pulled him forward and gripped the back of the Iwa nin’s breastplate. He wrenched his arm back, pulling the shinobi backwards and swept his leg out to knock the ninja’s feet from under him.

Things We Lost in the Fire - GenRai
I’M LATE I KNOW I’M SORRY but here it is! My day one contribution for GenRai Week 2017 :D
I am apparently incapable of writing fluff. This got a bit darker than I intended, and then somehow turned into an examination of how fucked up the shinobi system is before we get to the good stuff. My bad. I’m sorry.
also on ao3
Word Count: 4,419
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Semi-graphic descriptions of torture (nothing hardcore dw), vomit, heavy angst, explicit sexual content.
Genma was no stranger to missions going sideways. Missions went wrong all the time, especially in his line of work. He could plan out every detail, but the fact remained that there would always be variables beyond his control - he had told his partner Raido once that the only guarantee on this job was that someone was going to die, and the rest was up to chance. Granted, he was damn good at his job - that was as indisputable as the fact that he was likely going to die on the job someday - but planning and preparation only went so far, and fate could be a cruel mistress.
