C'mon Yo-Kai Let's be friends! Chapter Five - Getting Down to Business..
Current Word Count: 3,615 words 20,214 characters
The air filled up with huffs and grunts as the two kids raced towards the town hall, with Ellow close behind them. If anyone else was around at the moment, they’d think the kids were running away from some sort of unseen monster, which would be ironically speaking, as Ellow was close behind them, but more so following them.
“Just a little further guys!” Momoka wheezed, and Taki replied with a wordless, determined nod.
He has a gut feeling that something is amidst, and that feeling was confirmed the moment he heard Momoka let out a shocked exclamation the moment she turned the corner. Taki and Ellow followed, and their eyes grew wide at the sight:
The town statue was demolished. Rubble scattering among the decorated stone pavement. The only thing that seemed to remain is the plaque, but even then it was obscured by chunks of rubble.
Ellow whispered, horrid at the sight. “Oh, my enma…”
As the group inched a bit closer to the statue, and took a moment to gaze at the statue, a sudden cry grabbed their attention.
“Momoka!”
The pig-tailed girl sharply turned her head towards an approaching figure; it was Sumiko! Equally terrified and shocked as they were.
“Sumiko!” Momoka shouted, the group rushing towards the head-band kid to meet her halfway. “What-what happened??”
“I have no clue!” She responded, turning towards the destroyed statue. “I was on my way home after running a quick errand for my mom - then BAM!”
Sumiko frantically waved her arms toward the destroyed statue. “Azalea’s prized statue DESTROYED!”
“Huh?” Taki furrowed his eyebrows. “Prized statue??”
Sumiko and Momoka gazed at Taki with a somber look, the pig-tailed body facing towards the boy completely.
“Yes, well, it’s considered a prize to many of Azalea Height’s residents, even us. It had a history..” Momoka started—
Although the history behind its origin and creation remains a mystery to this day, it still served as a source of courage, compassion, and hope, past and present.
In the past, Azalea Height was in the middle of a war, and although the people from that time didn’t involve themselves in that war, they still suffered from it. On top of that, illness ran rampant during that time as well.
So, the people of that time came to the tree, to pray or even get a glimpse of it, even if it was just an ordinary statue. But, it wasn’t, no. Because somehow, in some way, the people became struck with newfound courage, as if it was magic.
Because of the statue, the people of Azalea Height decided to end the wars themselves - by forcing the two opposing groups to surrender and compromise. As for the rampant illness, one day as a farmer served water to his bedridden wife, she suddenly started to feel better! It was as if the water was not only purified but had healing properties!
And thus, everyone had grown to truly value the statue, regardless of its origin. —
“Or as told by our schools and parents, but I believe them to be true.” Momoka finished.
Taki blinked, awed by Momoka’s tale. To think a statue would have extreme value to its citizens. He let out a hum, a finger tapping against his chin as he took a glance at the statue, thinking to himself.
The others watched in silence, curiously and questioning themselves on what Taki could be thinking about at this very moment. But as Momoka inched closer to snap the goggled boy out of his thoughts, Taki gleamed sharply.
“We need to confront Haruto,” He exclaimed, turning towards the others. “And we need a group of yo-kai to do it!”
As Momoka's face scrunched with uncertainty and Ellow gave a determined nod, Sumiko stood there with confusion plastered on her face.
“Yo-kai???” She queried, and Taki and Momoka stood there with wide, blank faces, realizing they left a small detail from Sumiko.
“...Right,” Taki muttered, before clearing his throat roughly, unsure of how to, once again, explain the existence of yo-kai to another human. “Yeah, so, I explained it to Momoka, but yeah- Yo-kai is real..”
There was a pause in the air for a moment, and the two other kids winced as they felt they had made Sumiko uneasy with a horrifying fact. Or had concluded that both of them are nuts.
But, She stood there, her eyes wide as if she was trying to process something.
Momoka mumbled. “Sumiko…?”
… “...I think we broke her Mo-”
“YOKAI ARE REAL!?!?!?!?!”
The others jumped as the headband girl squealed excitedly, her eyes now beaming with absolute joy.
Not the reaction anyone was expecting, BUT at least she did not freak out.
“Ah-” Taki muttered, before lowering his arms in defense. “Uh, yeah!”
Taki rubbed the back of his neck, chuckling as Sumiko continued to be excited about this new information.
“So wait!” She put her index finger up, squinting her eyes. “Are you saying that mythical creatures such as the kyubi and Bakekujira are real!?”
Before Taki could say a peep, Ellow piped up, a finger held up. “There is a species of kyubi in the yo-kai world! Known for its manipulative but charming  personality!”
Sumiko’s gaze became unfocused, an eyebrow tilted down as they darted in all directions in confusion. “Who said that???”
Momoka and Taki give each other glance at each other, the same statement inside both of their heads:
Huh. Not sure how Sumiko could hear her.
But, with a huff Taki slowly took off his goggles, inching it towards the stunned headband kid. “Here, use this - You’ll be able to see Ellow!”
Sumiko nose wrinkled with further uncertainty “Ellow?”
“Yeah,” Taki exclaimed. “She’s my yo-kai maid!”
“Ghost maid? - OH!” Sumiko then turned towards the ghost maid's direction and pointed her index finger. “You mean her, right?”
The ghost maid blinked her eyes as the two other kids gaped their mouths open, shocked by the minor action that occurred. Taki stammered for a brief moment, pointing back and forth between Sumiko and Ellow.
“You can SEE her?????” Taki blubbered, and Sumiko replied with a nod. “How???”
“Oh! She might be one of the few humans to have the ability to see other yo-kai, Master Taki,” Ellow spoke up, her tablet whipped out as she scanned through an informational Wikipedia page. “Either by being the descendant of a psychic or sorcerer, or having a deep connection to yo-kai!”
The boy became stunned at that information“Wait- people can have that ability??”
The ghost maid gave Taki a soft nod. “Yes, but it’s still a rare occurrence. It seems that perhaps we are just lucky to know someone that can see yo-kai!”
“Hey wait- you’re right!” Taki beamed as realization hit him, glancing at Sumiko. “Sumiko! Do you think you can help us search for the other remaining yo-kai?”
And for a moment, Sumiko let out an excited gasp before a thought hits them. “Hey, wait- Aren’t yo-kai dangerous?”
Taki hummed for a bit. “Probably- but the good news is, you CAN befriend them! My GramGram told me it’s a little complicated!”
And with that, Sumiko, once again, let out an excited squeal, her eyes beaming as their hands clasped together. “YOU CAN BEFRIEND YO-KAI TOO!?”
Taki gave her a smirk as he raised his left arm, flexing the yo-kai watch on his wrist. “Yeah, with the yo-kai watch Delta!”
“Created by the mysterious Professor. Kazumi, I might add!” Ellow added, watching as Sumiko stared at the watch in awe.
“Wow, that is so cool!” She awed, scanning the watch. “Are there any more watches like these?”
“Actually,” Taki started, lowering his hand. “Professor Kazumi said that there are two other watches, like mine. But, we don’t have time for that!”
Sumiko furrowed their eyebrows and slightly frowned at the boy, annoyed and confused.
“We need to find Haruto and stop him!” Taki carped, his nose wrinkling.
Momoka quavered. “But, Taki, we don’t know for *sure* that he and Hon Kage are the one’s doing this!”
He thought for a moment and let out a sigh. “You’re right, but, since those two are our prime suspects, we have to face them!”
Taki frowned for a moment. “And better yet, we can figure out exactly WHY he chased off that other yo-kai.”
The pig-tailed girl somberly stared at the ground for a brief moment. But, she soon shakes off those feelings, her face shifting into a more serious, determined look.
“I understand Taki.”
Taki gave her a nod, forming a half-smile at her.
He understands that it may be slightly difficult for her to (probably) fight Haruto after some unknown problems with him. But with all the evidence stacked against them, it needs to be done.
Taki let out a sigh. “Alright, I have to take Momoka home (because I promised my mom) BUT- tomorrow we need to meet up and search for those other yo-kai!”
The others gave Taki a determined nod.
“How about we meet up at my papá’s bakery?” Momoka spoke up. “We can, meet around 10:15 am.”
“Sounds good!” Taki replied. “Alright, let’s head off for the night and get some sleep! We got a big day ahead of us….”
As the group talked for a bit further and said their goodbyes for the time being, unbeknownst to them, the hooded figure was watching them from a distance, standing on the rooftop of the city hall building.
The whole time, they could hear them from afar, eavesdropping. Learning some interesting detail about the goggled kid having a yo-kai watch, and although having a yo-kai servant, seems to have a lack of actual yo-kai companions.
Heh. How pathetic. They briefly chuckled.
And then their eyes grew wide at an internal realization, and a mischievous grin formed.
Those stupid humans and idiot yo-kai are going to find those two, the ones who drove the other yo-kai away, to a fight….
Oh, this is going to be AWESOME.
---
The next morning, the alarm on Taki's nightstand rang, waking Taki up from his slumber. He made a mental note of the time as he shuts it off.
*9:30* it said.
'That should be enough time to eat breakfast, get dressed, and gather a few essentials.' He thought to himself, yawning and stretching his arms to get the sleep out. He papped his cheeks to get himself to wake up, and with gusto, hops out of bed.
He nearly bumped into his sister and her towel as he rushed down the stairs, whisper-yelling a 'sorry' as Junko let out a half-tired 'Hey!'. Junko gave the boy a drowsy scowl as he disappeared into the kitchen, before rolling her eyes as she entered the bathroom. She's too tired to care what Taki got in his head at the moment.
In the kitchen, Ellow was putting the finishing touches on Taki's breakfast; A bowl of Okayu, known for being a comforting dish that soothes the body and restores energy, with a side of egg and 2 pieces of bacon. Perfect for the day ahead of Master Taki and the others. She gave the boy a soft smile as he entered the room.
"Morning, Master Taki," She greeted, placing his breakfast before him as he sat down. "I checked on your other family members, Your parents and grandmother are still asleep so I'll write them a note!"
"Thank you! I'll let Junko know I'm leaving as soon as we head out." Taki muttered as he grabbed his spoon, and started to devour his breakfast.
The ghost maid nodded as she washed some of the dishes left in the sink, humming melodically as she did so. As Taki looked around, he started to notice that the house was a little cleaner, and the boxes had now been folded and packed neatly.
*Did...Ellow clean up the house while everyone was asleep* he wondered, swallowing his food. He let out a sigh to himself, proceeding to ponder a few things.
'Mom and Dad will think that either I or Junko cleaned the house while they were asleep, but really, it was the work of a yo-kai. Sometimes I wonder if I should explain the existence of yo-kai to my parents and Junko, but I also think about the cons if I ever go through with it: At best, my parents will play it off as me being a kid and my sister making fun of me for it. At worst, they might blame GramGram and send her to the hospital for no actual reason. Maybe.'
Taki gulped down the last of the food he could muster, letting out a relieved sigh. "Thank you for the food, Ellow!"
Ellow gave her master a nodding reply, putting the last dish on the rack for it to start its drying process.
She went and grabbed Taki's plate as he raced up the stairs to get ready. As he does so, Ellow pulls out a pen and a lined note card, proceeding to write a note for the other family members to see, of course, writing as if she's Taki himself;
*Dear Family members, By the time you wake up, you'll notice that I am already out and about hanging out and making more new friends. Do not worry about me too much, we'll make sure to steer clear of streets with no power and buildings that seem to be on the verge of crumbling and overall stay out of trouble. A son's promise. If you'd need me, you can call me on my phone
Amid the note being written, Taki placed his afro pick down in favor of donning his goggles, looking into the small mirror on his desk and giving himself an approving nod.
'Although, I probably won't answer a few times, as I am busy hanging out with friends. They're pretty great, and they think I am too. I'm hoping to make even more friends, cause I guess I'm just a natural. Love, Taki.'
Taki gently knocked on the bathroom door, the sound of running water still clear to his ears. "Junko, I'm heading out!"
"'Kay!" Junko replied, albeit slightly uninterested.
The boy beamed as he swiftly skipped down the stairs to put on his shoes. The ghost maid floated towards him, her expression soft and ready to go.
"The letter is all set and placed on the fridge." She reported.
"Thanks again, Ellow! Ah, I don't know what I'll do without you."
The ghost maid's cheeks flushed at the compliment, rubbing her arms sheepishly.
And with his shoelaces tied, he and Ellow head out the door, ready to run a couple of errands and then to Momoka's family bakery.   – About 30 minutes later, the duo made it to the meeting place on time, behind the bakery. Momoka was there, setting down a few drinks on the picnic table. Most likely refreshers. The pig-tailed girl gave the duo a greeting wave as Taki let out a grunt as he set down a peculiar grocery bag, earning a curiously confused eye from Momoka.
She queried, an eyebrow raised. "What's in the bag?"
"Well," Taki started, digging his hands into the bag. "Before hitting the sack, I and Ellow searched the yo-kai web for befriending yo-kai quickly, and as it turns out..."
Taki paused in his words, letting out a quick huff as he pulls out...food? Not 'food food' but more so..light meals, like packaged rice balls, ramen cups, a wrapped-up sandwich, and even some candy!
"And apparently, we can feed yo-kai, its favorite food to increase our chances of befriending it!" Taki finished, and Momoka let out a soft 'ah' and gave him a slow nod.
'Kinda sounds like bribing though..' Momoka thought to herself. But a couple of questions appeared in her mind, an eyebrow furrowed down. "Okay, but why get so much food?"
The ghost maid floated forward. "Well, you see Mistress Momoka, just as a yo-kai has a 'favorite food', they also have a 'disliked food', which will decrease our chances of befriending a yo-kai if we were to accidentally feed it to them."
"Oooooh, I see!" The pig-tailed girl mused, placing a finger on her chin. "So, like humans, Yo-kai have their taste in food! Interesting!"
The ghost maid nodded, as Taki stuffed the food back inside the bag. Finishing, the boy took a moment to look around, noticing that a certain someone was missing.
"Where's Sumiko?" He quizzed, and Momoka whipped out her phone. "We're gonna need to go on our yo-kai search soon..."
"I don't know," She replied, her thumb dragging down rows of messages between her and Sumiko. "They said that she's gonna be *slightly* late, but should get here before we head out.."
As if on cue, a loud 'hey!' can be heard behind them, and there was Sumiko, waving her arms and seems to be wearing a light aquamarine backpack. Curious. But before anyone could query what was in the backpack, they all jumped as the headbanded kid slammed the backpack on the table, followed by a heavy ‘thud!’.
“Sorry for being a little late, I did some research on how to deal with yo-kai and, if we fail to befriend any yo-kai that can help up, created some sort of a backup plan! Interestingly, I found out certain items were sold in shops here!”
And with that, Sumiko unzipped one of the main compartments, flipped it over, and poured the items onto the table.
‘Somewhat carelessly making a mess, but okay.’ Ellow sighed to herself, the other two curiously browsing amongst the items.
Among the assortment, there was: A plushie of some sort, suspicious-looking syrup containers, a few bottles of what appeared to be medicine, a book with the word ‘GUARD’ written in bold, and…a makeshift bat weapon.
“Sumiko, I’m not 100% sure we’d need to use a bat on a yo-kai…” Momoka stated flatly, staring at the weapon with half-lidded eyes.
“Well, I mean,” Sumiko sheepishly started, “We’re also sure that Ellow cannot fight (No offense, but she doesn’t look the type) so how are we supposed to combat the yo-kai to befriend it?”
Someone spoke up “Really simple really,”
Taki’s eyes grew wide at the familiar voice and swiftly turned around to confirm it. And there in both spirit and flesh, was Nekogi. “You need a yo-kai friend that can fight with you.”
“Nekogi!!” Taki let out a hearty laugh as he quickly hugged Nekogi. The Cat-Rabbit yo-kai was briefly uncomfortable for a moment, but let out a soft sigh as he slowly accepted it. “You came back!”
The cat-rabbit yo-kai sheepishly stared at the ground. “Yeah, I did. I was thinking about your words, and I admit, while still not even fully courageous and strong, I’ll still fight alongside you,” He glanced at the human boy, his eyes sparkling. “As a friend.”
The goggled boy smiled at that word. “Right back at ya!”
Nekogi gave him a soft nod, before extending a paw out. “You’ll need this, a sign of our friendship.”
Taki let out a gasp as he saw the object in his paw; A medal, which had a drawing of Nekogi on it, adorned with a red color around the border and a symbol at the bottom middle. His eyes sparkled as he took it, a sense of euphoria washing over him.
“Wow, my very first yo-kai medal…”
It was until he heard a ‘AHEM’ from Sumiko that he realized he was kinda leaving the other two humans out of the dark a bit.
“Oops. Ah, my bad!” Taki chuckled sheepishly, rubbing a hand behind his neck. “Momoka, Sumiko, this is Nekogi! Nekogi, Momoka, and Sumiko! Of course, Ellow is here too!”
The ghost maid curtseyed the cat-rabbit yo-kai as Momoka waved and Sumiko let out a ‘hey!’. Nekogi responds with a short nod.
‘So that’s the creature Taki was talking to, he’s so cute!’ The pig-tailed girl internally cooed.
“Alright,” Taki exclaimed, clapping his hands together. “Let’s get down to business..”  — “...And that kid with the goggles is blaming *you* entirely!” The hooded figure exclaimed, pretending to seem enraged.
They were talking to another kid with green hair and a half-shaven head, leaning against the concrete wall of the alleyway. A pocket watch attached to a necklace of chains dangled.
But all he did was let out a scoff. “So *what* if they think I’m the one going around and ruining things for everyone? They need to rent a few brains..”  The hooded figure piped up, secretly masking a faux-worried tone “Exactly what *I* intitanaly thought too, BUUUT! You and Hon Kage are the ones responsible for the other yo-kai fleeing! What if they plan to do whatever it takes to bring him down!”
The boy went silent as he proceeded to side-eye the yokai beside him. A creature of dark colors and red accents was dozing away, it’s head resting on big, broken chained claws.
“And who knows,” The figure continued, trying to hide a smirk. “They could go as far as killing it…”
He then sharply glared at the figure, clearly peeved at the being for saying that. “You’re a humongous prick…”
The figure simply shrugged. “I’m just trying to help you..”
Haruto fell silent, and let out a grunt. “Alright then, if those sacks want a fight, *they are getting a fight*...”
Haruto pushed himself off the wall to head deeper into the alley, letting out a whistle to signal Hon Kage to wake up. It’s six eyes opened, the color of red glowing slightly in the shadows as he followed his friend.
The hooded figure remained behind, letting out a cold chuckle. “Let the fun begin~...”

C'mon Yo-Kai Let's be friends! Chapter Four - Second Thoughts
Current Word Count: 2,365 words 13,481 characters
Me thinks trouble is slowly starting to brew… both outside the mindscape and INSIDE the mindscape
Dawn had turned to night as a couple of hours went by, and all the lights shined brightly, from stop lights to handle the drivers that have places to go at night to street lamps that guide pedestrians home for the night. Despite all the lights cutting out the star in the skies, the moon continues to light up in the sky.
A figure was one of those said pedestrians, a hoodie covering their face as they walked through the night, an earbud playing music in their left ear. Two girls were walking home after a day of after-school studying a couple of blocks before them, chatting away in exhaustion and giggling as carefree teenagers usually do. The stranger, although practically invisible to them, tsked and scowled.
They paused in their steps, noticing something as their head slightly turned.
A statue in the middle of the town square depicts an injured ancient warrior, an arrow pierced through bits of marble armor while being shielded by a dragon, tears carved on the dragon's marbled cheeks. The stranger raised an eyebrow at the peculiar statue.
"A dragon protecting a human…?" they paused, sharp teeth baring before letting out a soft scoff, a silver-colored flow of magic curling around their fingers. "What a silly concept for a statue, but nothing a little fixer-upper can't solve~…."
---
Taki was slumping on his bed face-down, his body limp as the peach bread remained on his dresser, untouched. In the meantime, Ellow was cleaning up his room, organizing his belongings alphabetically as she quietly sang an unfamiliar but catchy song.
f the clouds were to dance, then the wind would sing~~
The human turned, clutching the pillow with a solemn expression. "...Ellow?"
The ghost maid paused in her cheerful melody with a 'hm?' turning towards her master. "Yes, Master Taki..?"
He thought momentarily, gaping his mouth open once or twice before deciding to speak.
"Do you think I'm kinda unworthy to be making friends with yo-kai???"
The ghost maid's eyes grew wide, seemingly shocked by the boy's question.
"Master Taki, OF COURSE, you are! Otherwise, the watch would've hopped right off!" She placed her feather duster down in favor of sitting next to her master. "But why would you ask…?"
"..." The boy let out a sigh. "I… might've been too quick to try to befriend a yo-kai…and if that's how I am, will I creep other yo-kai out!?"
"If they ever come back.." Taki pressed his pillow on his face, legs curling as he let out a strained grumble. "I am not good at this detective stuff…."
"Now, now, Master Taki," Ellow conjured her feather duster out of existence, crossing an arm as she placed her remaining hand on her cheek. "For starters, I'm one of those yo-kai, and I'll be frank, you haven't creeped me out! Although you did slightly surprise me in the beginning-"
The ghost maid excitedly clenched her fists. "And you did find out who we're looking for A human named Haruto Saito and a yo-kai named Hon Kage!"
She paused, reeling in on what might be going on with Taki. "But - Perhaps you're tired from the events that conspired today. Maybe a cup of tea will help you re-fuel?"
Taki thought for a moment before softly nodding. "Yeah, that sounds good!"
Ellow smiled at him and nodded, turning towards the door to prep some tea, rambling that she might make some 'famous family cookies' as she phased through the door.
And then Taki was left to his own devices. Sitting up, he bit the inside of his cheek, reaching towards the laptop on his nightstand.
He writes a new digital diary entry, starting it up and wiggling his fingers.
'Hey, it's me again! So today has been somewhat eventful- well, for me, at least. The good news is…I found a couple of yo-kai today and became friends with one of them! She's a yo-kai butler named Ellow; she's chill! However, the other yo-kai, Nekogi, who I felt like I was *close* to befriending, kind of…ran away. He was so cool, though, and mysterious! But, the bad news is that we don't have a yo-kai to help us fight whoever is causing destruction around Azalea Heights, who we believe to be Haruto and Hon Kage- and we don't even know what they look like or even where they are!'
Taki sighed, hesitating a couple of times before he resumed writing.
'I'm having second thoughts about this whole 'befriending yo-kai and saving the town' thing, or even the idea that…I belong in Azalea Heights. Everything is just too…different. Well, besides my family, of course. Maybe, I'm not cut-'
"Taki!" His mom called out from his door. "Someone is here to see you! A girl around your age, I believe?"
"Huh?" Taki leaped from his bed, rushing downstairs to the front door, only to see Momoka standing outside. "Momoka?"
- The pigtailed girl was situated on a tatami chair, a spare Mrs. Oshimo happily lent, in Taki's room, her face scrunched as if she was troubled. Taki sat crisscrossed with arched eyebrows, gaze full of confused worry.
"Is something the matter, Momoka?" Taki asked, removing his legs from the crisscross position.
"No, no, not really. But," Momoka paused, staring down at the floor for a brief moment. "I was outside when I heard you talking to…someone?"
Ah. So Momoka heard him talking to Yo-kai. Hopefully, she won't see him as weird…
"But then, I heard you mention the name 'Haruto Saito'..." She looked down, a glum expression contrasting with her usually cheerful demeanor.
"...Yeah, I did say that name, but, What about it?"
Momoka fell silent, letting out a sigh. "Haruto…Haruto kind of went…missing? Or at least, ran away…"
Taki lightly gasps, his eyes wide in shock. "Haruto ran away? …Why?"
"..." Momoka's eyes glistened with somber. "They had it rough during our elementary school days, and trouble kept bothering him. And on the day we were supposed to start middle school that started last month. He ran off somewhere.."
Taki's face molded with sobering shock. "Does…Does his family know where he is?"
"Well," The girl started. "His parents have said that they come home sometimes, but then he's gone again the next day. No warnings or anything."
Taki tapped his chin in thought, letting out a slight hum.
Maybe…Hon Kage is influencing Haruto into doing bad things?? No, no, don't blame the yo-kai yet…well, GramGram did say that yo-kai can influence humans into doing bad things…maybe this was the case?
Counterpoint: Nekogi says that Haruto summons Hon Kage, and those who are inspirited might not SEE the yo-kai at all…
"By the way, Taki?"
The boy's eyes rapidly blinked as he broke out of his train of thought, snapping back into reality.
"Ye- yeah?" The boy stammered
Momoka tilted her head slightly. "Who exactly were you talking to? It didn't sound like you were talking to yourself.."
Ah. The moment has come, time to lose a friend probably.
Taki cleared his throat, slowly removing his goggles from his curly hair.
"So…how do I put this…" He tapped his fingers, a nervous sweat rolling down his cheek. "...I was talking to yo-kai..?"
Momoka blinked, her expression very telling that she was in disbelief. "Yo-kai..?"
Taki mumbled a soft 'yeah' as he handed over his goggles. "Here, put these on!"
The girl's face scratched in confusion, but slowly, she reached for the quirky accessory and put them over her eyes.
Taki pointed towards his door. "Now, look over there."
And so she did- she let out a frightful gasp as she flipped over her chair. A ghostly maid holding a tray of piping hot tea and cookies floated before her eyes, a sense of eeriness shrouding the paranormal being. The young girl let out a loud gulp, clenching a part of her shirt for comfort.
"Oh, Master Taki!" Ellow exclaimed. "I didn't know we had a guest!"
The human boy gave her a smile, his head turning towards the frightened teenage girl. “Momoka, this is Ellow.”
---
Nekogi was walking down the bare streets just west of Taki's house. The few humans that remained outdoors in the nick of night paid him no mind. He is a yo-kai, and of course, humans can't see the paranormal that walks among them.
He turned a corner and walked into the park. The breeze rustled against the branches and flowers as he entered, greeting him as he walked along. A mile later, his eyes met his destination;
A large tree, with a few azalea shrubbery surrounding it, practically hiding the tree. Nekogi walked off the trail and headed towards a said tree, sighing in relief as he slumped down into the grass, purring in contentment. He eyed a small hole not far from the tree, inching towards it.
He called into the hole. "Hey, I'm home!"
A few minutes later, a couple of baby rabbits and a mother crawled out of the hole, greeting the cat-rabbit yo-kai with nose boops. Nekogi chuckled as he watched his rabbit siblings wrestle each other before their mother let out a stern squeak, halting the mock battle. She then pushes them towards the hole, signaling them to 'go back to bed.'
Nekogi positioned himself on his feet as his mother approached, letting out a puzzled chirp.
"Oh, today was…different."
The mother rabbit tilted her head curiously. 'How different?'
"Well.." The Cat-rabbit yo-kai drawled. "For starters…I got chased by a human and his ghost maid. He had..a yo-kai watch." The mother rabbit's ears flinched, and she let out a purr. 'A yo-kai watch? Does that mean you made a human friend?'
His ears slumped down. "Well, no…He wanted me to fight alongside him against those guys. The ones whom the other yo-kai were trying to fight.."
'Well, why not join him?' the mother rabbit chattered.
Nekogi didn't say anything, repositioning himself in a fetal position as he leaned against the tree. "Because I'm scared, Mama…."
The mother rabbit let out a soft whine, hopping towards him. Laying a paw on his own, she stares at him with kindness in her beady eyes.
'My son, it's okay to be scared. Those two... seem like they're causing a lot of trouble and danger to others and our home. They are a confirmed danger, so that is a valid reason to be scared of something..'
Nekogi let out a soft 'hmph,' staring elsewhere.
'But, you can be scared and also be brave. Brave enough to fight alongside people who are willing to protect our home! Plus, having a friend has kind benefits.'
The yo-kai eyes grew wide at those words, and he fell silent as he stared at the barely visible stars, and his mother chirped a 'goodnight, son' as she hopped into the hole in the ground, leaving him be with his thoughts.
--- "So, let me get this straight," Momoka started, putting down her emptied cup. "So, For starters, yo-kai are supernatural creatures from our country's myths and legends, and we can't see them?" Taki nodded, mumbling as he chewed on a cookie.
"And yo-kai have been trying to fend off the culprit causing chaos around Azalea Heights, who are said to be Haruto and a yo-kai named Hon Kage?"
"Yes, that is correct," Ellow said, holding the teapot towards Momoka's cup in a wordless question. She gave the ghost maid a nodding reply. "The yo-kai Nekogi has confirmed it."
"But still," Momoka paused, sipping her freshly poured tea. "I don't think Haruto is going around town and causing massive damage.."
Taki gave her a slight nod. "That is a good point, but there is the matter that they are driving a ton of yo-kai away.."
The teenage girl let out a sudden sigh. "And you're sure, besides Nekogi, that no other yo-kai is around to help?"
"Well, actually," Ellow piped up, wielding some Ipad but with ears arched dog ears on the top. "According to this yo-kai sensor app I just found (and paid ¥5401.90 for), It says here that at least five other yo-kai remain, including Nekogi and Hon Kage!"
The two humans glanced at each other, promptly getting up to observe the screen;
It showed a digital map of Azalea Heights, the blinking dots presumably marking the yo-kai.
"Look!" Momoka exclaimed, pointing at one of the dots. "One of the yo-kai is around my tia's greenhouse!"
Taki beamed. "That's great! We can check there in the."
The boy halted as music went off, a pop jingle rumbling against a fabric.
"Sorry, that's me!" The pigtailed girl rushingly apologized, reaching into one of her pockets to pull out her phone.
"iSoy Momoka!" She greeted. "Sumiko! How are you-"
Momoka paused for a moment; a panicked shouting could emit from Sumiko's line, Taki and Ellow watched as Momoka's expression turned to shock and terror.
"...what do you mean someone destroyed the town hall statue!?"
Suddenly, the casual atmosphere dropped, and the other two stared at each with widened eyes, shocked at what Momoka just said.
"....Okay," Momoka breathed out. "I'll be right there! And I'm bringing a friend! Bye!"
The girl quickly hung up her phone, roughly placing it in her pocket as she rushed for the door, gesturing the others to come along. Taki gave a determined nod and grabbed his iconic orange jacket and his goggles, Ellow going on ahead with Momoka.
As they rushed down the stairs, Mrs. Oshimo gave the girl a curious look. "Heading home?"
"Uh," The girl paused. "Yes, and Taki is walking me there!"
"I'd hope so!" The woman huffed. "I heard it's been getting dangerous at night! Well, you two be safe now!"
Momoka gave a quick 'Yes, Mrs. Oshimo' as she saw Taki skipping down the steps, proceeding to stretch her legs for the running ahead.
"And Taki," Mrs. Oshimo said. "I want you back in *at least* 30 minutes!"
The goggled-wearing boy panted as he quickly put on his shoes, nodding swiftly, and tied his shoes. "Gotta go!"
And that's when Momoka and Taki quickly booked it out the door with Ellow in tow.
"Follow me," Momoka said through breaths. "I know where the town square is!"

C'mon Yo-Kai Let's be friends! Chapter Three - The cat-rabbit yokai!
Current Word Count: 3,866 words 21,499 characters
Taki goes around, and eventually almost makes a yo-kai friend! (also i meant to add that- this is for general audiences but eventually there *might* be chapters with forms of Graphic violence in them-)
After what seemed to be an hour, Taki finally made it out of the labyrinth of the alleyway, thanks to Ellow showing the way, although they did end up in a couple of dead ends, no harm, no foul. But now there is the issue of solving the crisis, which involves both the town of Azalea Heights and yo-kai.
The human boy walked down the street, a finger on his chin, and his face scrunched up from kept-in thoughts. Ellow looks on, worry and confusion currently combined on her facial features, wondering if she should try to break her master out of his mindscape or leave him be.
After a minute, Taki finally spoke up. "Okay, so, Allegedly, there is a yo-kai going around and causing mass chaos, correct?"
Ellow nodded.
"So, the logical solution would be to fight fire with fire- in this case, yo-kai with yo-kai!"
"Yes, that would be a logical solution!" Ellow replied.
"YES, LOGICAL SOLUTION!" Taki shouted, pumping his fists and making the ghost maid jump from the sudden shouting.
And then, there was silence for a few moments, so much that cars that passed by became audible to the naked ears(??). Pedestrians even gave Taki weirded-out looks as he remained in place.
"...Except, the alleged yo-kai troublemaker scared off a lot of yo-kai, meaning…we can't find a yo-kai who can help us fight…." Taki let out a disappointed sigh. "Unless you can, Ellow-"
"Oh no, no, no," The ghost maid waved her arms rapidly, her eyes bulging with slight fear. "Yo-kai maids and butlers only act as mere supporters; We may give advice one might find useless, giving useful items and blurting out tidbits..."
"So, what you're saying is…." The boy paused for a moment, ready to become disappointed. "You can't fight?"
"Correct." Her shoulders slumped with self-disappointment as she sighed.
Taki sighed at the answer, shoving his hands into his pockets. "We might need to ask around…." — An hour later, after a quick return home to grab a notepad and pencil, he scoured the block in search of answers.
First, he went to a bus stop.
"So, when exactly did blackouts start happening???" Taki quieres an older woman in orange-brimmed glasses and a shiba inu puppy curled on her lap, sleeping away, unaware of a ghost maid staring in awe of its cuteness.
The elder hummed in thought. "Well, it started at the beginning of the week, so Monday? No, Sunday!" She quickly corrected herself, Taki nodding along as she continued her story.
"It happened when twilight started to set on the horizon, so imagine everyones' shock when the sudden blackout happened. A few car accidents happened that day; luckily, no one died, but a few were heavily injured. What was even stranger was that it seemed the power station had been tampered with, despite workers being present!"
"So are you saying a worker might have caused the blackout that day?" Taki furrowed his eyes, jotting them down.
"I said present I didn't say they were working!"
A soft, vibrating hiss signaled the bus' arrival. The elderly lady got up with a huff, the sleeping inu pup remained in her arms, and all the ghost maid could do was wave a sorrowful farewell. She's going to miss the puppy.
"Wait!" The boy shouted, "Is there anything else you know?"
The lady stared at him momentarily, only giving him a shrug and nothing more. As the bus closed its doors and drove off with a hum, Taki looked down at the notes he got so far, scanning the paper for a quick review.
Still not enough to work with…
He glances at Ellow, who seems to have recovered from the inu puppy leaving, moving on to not just one, but a whole group of puppies out and about on a walk. Their owner is oblivious that the pups are being petted and cooed at but a ghost maid. Taki smiled at her.
"Alright, moving on!"
— Next, he decided he needed a second opinion from an expert, a dabbler in the spirits and folklore. Someone who had a great sense of knowledge. And it led him to a book shopkeeper.
"Sooo, Mx. Yamamoto, in your opinion, would you say that all the chaos happening in Azalea Heights might be the work of a yo-kai?"
The shopkeeper let out a hum, furrowing their dark eyebrows as they gave it a thought.
"Well, my uncle told me about yo-kai mythology and mythos and how they caused trouble for humans a long time ago…."
Taki nodded slowly, not entirely pleased with the response, but he was not about to scowl at a stranger.
"And to be fair, a lot has changed- I mean, imagine you're a creature of mystery and thrillers, used to the past that was present, and then suddenly- electrical poles, giant buildings that seem to touch the skies from the ground view…it would seem rather scary."
Mx. Yamamoto curled a piece of their ivory hair as if to stimulate or release some form of stress.
"Maybe this yo-kai is causing havoc because everything feels…too new. It wants to return to how things used to be, so they want to damage everything because they want the old back but can't get it."
Taki paused in his writing, taking in the musing-eque answer from the shopkeeper. In a way, he can relate to the troubles the yo-kai might have. Such as missing something from their lives.
"Um," the boy paused, still somewhat dumbfounded. "Thank you for your input."
"It was not a problem." The shopkeeper flashed a soft smile.
Taki gave them a nod, turning towards the door, ready to leave and continue with his detective work. The ghost maid put down the book she was reading to follow her master. But before they could leave…
"But may I ask," The shopkeeper spoke up, their head cocked. "What do you intend to do? I mean, you're just a kid, no offense."
Taki paused, biting the side of his cheek as his brows furrowed. He took a deep breath, facing the shopkeeper, determination gleaming in his eyes.
"I am going to stop the disasters around town," he paused before lowering his tone to a whisper. "And befriend yo-kai."
And he left, the bell ringing to signal his departure.  — Finally, he talked to a civilian in a green cardigan and brown khakis. You would think he'd be somewhat decent, but he proved otherwise…
“HA! Yo-kai???? There is no such thing as a yo-kai kid! That's a folktale your parents told you to keep you in place!"
Taki blinked, startled at the strangers' sudden shouting. He side-eyed Ellow for a quick second, and by the looks of it, she seemed annoyed, probably because she happens to *be* a yo-kai herself.
"Ookaaaaaay," Taki drawled, clearing his throat and pressing his pen against the notepad. "So, if you don't think it's a yo-kai, what might it be?"
The man raised an eyebrow at him before letting out a 'psh' as he waved a dismissive hand.
"Everyone knows that it's the town council trying to dismantle a part of the city for a tax deduction," The man seems confident in his answer. "Alternatively, the reason why the council is taking their sweet time is that they are greedy! They don't want to fix stuff because they don't want to spend money!"
Taki gave the man an unsure frown, with Ellow, although invisible to the man's eyes, looking more annoyed than she did before. But although he might have a point, the council might have…some ulterior motive…
"Could it be that they aren't 100% sure what is causing this? And maybe they are just trying to figure things out before they launch an investigation?"
The man gave the boy an aggravated scowl, his arms crossed. He looks ticked for some reason.
"Listen, kid, if you're not gonna listen to an adult, I suggest you skedaddle!"
Taki grimaced at the man's sudden change in attitude, "Sir, I've been talking to adults before you, and they seemed more adult than you-"
And now the man was ticked, so much that he was about ready to throw hands at Taki. Luckily, Ellow managed to pull Taki away before the rude stranger could do anything.
"So, Master Taki," Ellow breathed as she led Taki down the street. "From now on, avoid that man."
"Understood."
— Taki and Ellow sat on the park bench, surrounded by trees and bushes. It was an excellent spot to take a break and decompress.
The ghost maid's worry returned as she watched the human boy flip through his notes, apparent frustration in his eyes. He mumbled the notes out loud, unaware of the ghost maid's gaze.
Blackout. Water pipe failures. Broken light poles. Car Accidents. Yo-kai only causes trouble because they're upset. Not a yo-kai but more like the city causing these stuff to happen because they're greedy.
The boy squinted his eyes before groaning, hitting the notepad against his face, and slumping back into the bench. "Nothing adds up, Ellow…."
The ghost maid frowned at the boys now depleted tone.
"At first, it started to make sense, and then it didn't, and now it feels like…I don't know…."
"Master Taki-"
"But," the boy interrupted before Ellow could say anything, and he gazed up at the blue sky. "I'm not ready to throw in the towel!"
The child raised himself from his spot; his fist clenched shut as he continued to sky-gaze with confidence and hope. "Azalea Heights is my new home now, and before me was the yo-kai that lives here!"
He turns to face Ellow, her mouth gaping in awe as her eyes shone, inspired by the boy's sheer determination.
"So, whatever is causing them to flee AND causing destruction around my new home…." He paused, thrusting a fist into the air. "Then, no matter what, I will stop it!"
Ellow clapped at the boy's confident bravo, a bright smile on her face.  She picked a good master to serve. But then, the atmosphere faltered as a deep rumbling became audible, and they both fell silent.
"...Master Taki?" Ellow whispered. The boy's eyes widened from surprise and shock. "..Do you need to eat?"
The boy shook his head slowly. The ghost maid faced the right master, gasping as she covered her mouth.
Something is with them right now. "Master Taki…." She audibly whispered. "Use your goggles or the yo-kai watch on your left…."
Taki cocked his head before slowly turning towards the left side and donning the goggles. He yelped as the vision became clear;
A cat-like yo-kai stood behind them. Their pupils are sharp as they remain in place. All three of them remained, not wanting to make a sudden move.
Was this the yo-kai going around and causing disaster??? Taki thought to himself, staying still. He mentally debated whether or not he should talk to it to gather more info. Still, when the human stepped towards the mysterious yo-kai, it BOLTED towards the park exit.  "Hey, wait!!" Taki shouted, running after the yo-kai. Ellow eyes grew wide in panic, following her master.
Taki chased the mysterious yo-kai down the street as they exited the park, the boy letting out huffs of breath as his feet pounded the ground as he ran, the ghost maid behind him trying to keep up.
The boy exclaims 'sorry' and 'excuse mes' as he accidentally bumps into other pedestrians, some giving him aggravated looks at others giving him glimpses of confusion; all the while, the boy sharply tries to focus his gaze onto the yo-kai, who seems to be at the crossroads.
"Please stop!" The boy pleaded. "We just want to talk to you!"
The yo-kai glanced at the human boy, alert and suspicious in his gaze. Then it looked out into the ongoing cars, making it seem like it had nowhere to go. But as the two moved closer, the yo-kai jumped onto an on-moving car, its feet light as a feather as it hopped from one car into another until it reached the other side of the street.
The boy panted as he tried to catch his breath, looking on in amazement and frustration. Although the yo-kai is wearing a scarf and on the other side of the street, Taki could feel like the yo-kai is giving him an icy smirk before running off.
They will lose track of him if the lights don't turn green Taki ranted to himself, sweat rolling down his cheeks.
"Come on, Master Taki!" Taki sharply turned his head at the ghost maid, who had her hand extended. "We'll lose him the moment the light goes red!"
For a brief moment, the boy only stared at her in evident confusion. But he had to give it a shot. So with a confident nod, he took the ghost maid's hand…
And suddenly, they were hovering in the air! The boy gasped as his hands held onto Ellow's, the ghost yo-kai not even breaking a sweat, her face filled with determination.
Taki looked down at the ground, trying to spot the yo-kai from before. It wasn't until he spotted a brown blur running down the right side of the street, a few inches ready to take a sharp turn into an alleyway.
"Right there, Ellow!"
She nods at the boy, hovering down to the ground close enough for the boy to hop onto. The yo-kais ears cringed the moment the human child's feet hit the ground, staring back briefly to see the human kid and ghost lady, it *thought* shook off, are now catching up to him.
"He's heading towards the alleyway! He's probably trying to enter the alleyway labyrinth!" The ghost maid shouted
The yo-kai bolted into an alleyway, ready to finally escape, but his eyes grew wide as he found a brick wall instead. It 'watched' as it turned around, only to gasp as the human boy and ghost maid finally caught him. Its ears flattened and let out a hiss, a warning of what would come if they tried anything funny.
Taki raised his hands in defense. "It's okay. We are not trying to hurt you."
The boy raised his orange goggles, now having no use for them as he could see the yo-kai just fine without them, giving it a sincere, friendly smile.
"We just want to ask you a few questions."
The yo-kai remained still, his posture continuing to remain hostile. It is not entirely convincing. The boy pursed his lips together, unsure of what to do…
"Master Taki," Ellow whispered, with some… iPad in her hands. "According to this, we can give it something to eat, and it'll most likely become friendlier!"
The boy gazed at the screen, nodding. "So, uh, little guy-"
The yo-kai glared at the two, stepping back as the boy moved closer.
"...Are you hungry?"
And that's when the yo-kai changed its demeanor. Its ears shifted, facing forward and close together as its eyes grew wide. Although Taki could still sense an aura of suspicion, it's best to take it one step at a time.
"I know a bakery that sells delicious peach bread, from what I heard from a friend. If you follow me, I can get you one…."
The yo-kai squinted his eyes in thought, very hesitant to take the boys' snack offer. It took a minute before the yo-kai straightened his posture and lowered its arms, giving the boy a nod as a sign he was willing to go with.
The boy gleamed and smiled, Ellow giving him a thumbs up.  — Although the yo-kai remained an inch behind them, and it took at least a mile to make it to the bakery, the moment Taki brought three pieces of bread from Momoka, the atmosphere seemed to have been lifted from heavy weights.
Both Ellow and the mysterious yo-kai ate their own bread, content with the snacks that Taki provided. Although the boy hadn't eaten his yet, he still smiled contently at the two yo-kai before him.
"So, uh…" He paused in his attempt to ask the yo-kai a question, but it occurred to him that he didn't know its name. "Sorry, I don't know your name."
The yo-kai furrowed an eyebrow at him as the boy nervously chuckled. "...Nekogi."
"Huh?"
"It's Nekogi." He repeated, albeit in annoyance.
As the yo-kai stated his name, the boy thought he could see some sort of tag that spelled out the yo-kai name before fading out of existence.
"Right, Nekogi!" The boy exclaimed, fiddling his thumb. "So, uh, If I may ask…why are you called that?"
The cat-rabbit yo-kai stopped before taking another bite of his bread, giving Taki an annoyed look as if he was saying, 'Really?' to which the boy gave him an apologetic smirk.
"According to the yo-kai encyclopedia…." Ellow started, her index finger scrolling down on the screen. "Nekogi is a cat-rabbit yo-kai, as his name is the combined words of cat and rabbit!"
"Really?" Taki mused, his eyes darting up and down Nekogi's figure in confusion. "You.. don't look like a rabbit."
"Well, compare me to a cat yo-kai, and you'll think otherwise.." The cat-rabbit yo-kai gruffed.
"It's true, Master Taki." Ellow rebutted, showing him a screen of an image of an average-looking red-orange cat yo-kai and an image of Nekogi.
"Oh, yeah!" Taki's eyes grew in amazement. "There's a huge difference!"
Nekogi let out a huff, putting his half-eaten peach bread to the side. "So, you said you wanted to ask me questions earlier while you were giving chase?"
The boy perked. "Oh, yeah, I did! But I figured you didn't want to answer them anyway. We chased you down a block or two after all."
"You did," Nekogi replied straightly. "But you brought me a treat, so that would mean I have to comply, Taki."
The boy beamed. "Thank you! Now, the first question," He paused, pulling out his notepad that he had almost left at the park.
"Are you the yo-kai causing the others to flee or leave Azalea Heights?"
Nekogi's eyes froze open, his ears pinned back as he folded his hands together for comfort. "I am not, but I know who is.."
Taki's eyes grew wide, slowly nodding. The mystery is almost close to being solved.
"Actually," Nekogi started. "It's a duo, A human and a yo-kai working together."
“Human and a yo-kai..” Taki softly murmured, focusing his gaze as the cat-rabbit yo-kai continued.
"The human's name is Haruto Saito - they made sure of that. And the yo-kai," Nekogi paused. "None of the others knew what kind of Yo-Kai it was…all I know is that it's terrifying and incredibly powerful!"
Ellow crossed her arms tightly, suddenly feeling a chill down her ghostly spine.
"The yo-kai partner is like a beast from the shadows, fighting in place of his human partner."
Taki clenched his mechanical pencil, his lower lip curled down as he could feel a fear of sweat dripping down his chin. "...So you think Haruto Saito and this…what is the yo-kai's name..?"
Nekogi paused, glancing down. "Whenever the human summons him to fight a yo-kai, he shouts the name: 'Hon Kage'..." his paws clasped tighter. "I know that because I watched as it beat a group of strong yo-kai down in an attempt to get them to leave…Their soul wisps shining brightly in the dark night to signal their ultimate defeat are all I remember…."
Taki paused in his note-taking, taking a quick glance at the cat-rabbit yo-kai, unsure if he should ask a question relating to the experience, but he moved on.
"Do you think they are the main cause of all of Azalea's disasters?"
"I am not 100% sure, but that would mean that if it's not them, then it must be something else. And if that's the case, that means it's out of our hands.."
Taki frowned at the state, looking up at Nekogi with a hard stare. "Maybe we could…Try talking to Haruto?"
The cat-rabbit yo-kai scoffed at the question. "The kid doesn't seem like the one who likes to talk to people, especially considering the evidence of him summoning his yo-kai friend.."
"Well," Taki clasped the pencil onto the wires that piece the notepad together. "It won't hurt to, at least, try, and besides, there are three of us! If they decide to fight, we can hit back!"
The cat-rabbit yo-kai arched his eyebrow before shaking his head.
"There is no 'three of us.' If you and the ghost maid want to," he paused as he held his pawed fingers up, prepared to use quotations. "'Talk it out' with them, then be my guest."
The boys' frown continued to remain, especially after the statement. "But, your one of the few yo-kai left in Azalea Heights that can help-"
"Yes, 'can help,' but have you considered that one might not want to help?"  Although Taki was keeping himself in check, Ellow could see that the boy was closing his fists tightly. The boy took a deep breath in and out, like a breeze rustlingly against the wind.
"Nekogi," Taki said softly. "I may understand why you don't want to fight; You said you saw yo-kai get pulverized, and I understand."
Nekogi gently folded his hands, solemnly looking away. "... I'm glad you do."
"But," The boy continued. "Our home, Azalea Heights, it's a place worth fighting for, to risk even your life for, even if you lived here all your life or just moved here."
The boy kneeled down, slowly placing a hand on Nekogi. "You and I love this place. I just know it! And as my parents would say, if you love something, you have to fight for it!"
He stood up, "So, what do you say," his palms now opened, a gesture for Nekogi to take his hands. "Friends?"
Ellow looked on from behind them, waiting alongside Taki for the cat-rabbit yo-kai to take it. Nekogi let out a sigh and slowly inched his paw toward the boy's opened palm. However, at the last moment, the cat-rabbit yo-kai's body started to shake, shoving the human boy lightly to the side as he ran off.
"Nekogi!!" Taki shouted, his arms raised towards Nekogi as he ran off.    Ellow solemnly stares at the now saddened human boy, helping him off the ground. The boy rubbed the side of his arm as he stared at his feet. The ghost maid folded her hands, giving Taki some space as he silently thought to himself.
"You know, Master Taki," She empathized. "With words like that, I'm sure Nekogi will eventually come through."
"...Yeah." He uttered, staring off into the sky. "It's almost sunset now. I think it's time we head home."
Ellow slowly nodded. "As you wish."
Ellow kept her hands as she waited patiently for Taki as he grabbed his own bread, as well as Nekogi's half-eaten piece. He looked at it, letting out a sigh as he covered it back up.
Unbeknownst to them, as they started their walk home, Momoka peeked her head out from the doorway to the bakery, giving the boy a saddened look.
“Haruto…” she uttered.
Looks like someone has been listening…

C'mon Yo-Kai Let's be friends! Chapter Two - Introducing: The Empty (?) World of yo-kai
Current Word Count: 2,351 words 13,165 characters
The second chapter, in which Taki continues his pursuit for yo-kai friendship.
The next morning, Taki was shoveling pieces of fruit salad into his maw, in a hurry to try and find yo-kai to befriend. All the while his sister looks on, weirded out but his weird behavior.
“I’m pretty sure mom and dad taught you how to chew your food…” She snarked, taking a sip of water.
Taki pauses, staring out into the open space, muffling as fruit remains in his mouth. “Mom and dad also said: ‘Don’t slow down, even for a second’!”
Now Junko is even more disgusted, rolling her eyes as Taki took a heavy gulp, rushing towards the door to get ready. But before he reached for the doorknob, he noticed the tv was on, his gram gram watching (or rather, listening) to the news reporter giving her local reports.
“Azalea Heights continues to suffer from damages from yesterday's ‘Building Breakdown’, as debris is yet to be fully cleansed from the street, causing a lot of traffic. Meanwhile, another blackout happened around Clover Avenue, and many buildings seemed to have suffered from it,”
Taki grimaced, a sinking feeling surging within his stomach,
“With freezer products melting from the general stores and ice cream shops and the hospital scrambling to look after its patients, who without proper monitoring, can deliver disastrous results.”
“That’s enough tv for today.” Gram Gram sharply commented, shutting off the tv with the remote, letting out a remorseful sigh, and rubbing her temples. “What a horrible week this town has been having…”
Taki stared at the floor grimacing for a moment, before walking behind Gram Gram, giving her a firm but warm hug. Gram Gram returns the warmth by giving him a broad smile.
“I’m heading out, family!” He shouts, letting go and heading out the door
“You be safe out there now!” Gram Gram shouted back, watching him head out the door. – Taki spent the entire morning and early afternoon, looking for some sort of yo-kai, big or small, mean or nice. He even double-checked the areas he looked at last evening, though some areas were blocked off thanks to the damage that occurred last night.
He groaned as he slumped on a bench, lifting his goggles before proceeding to fumble and his hands in his pockets. He can feel pieces of lint and the change he hasn’t used yet, allowed to keep them after attempting to give them back to his mom, which she declined.
Maybe I can grab a snack at one of the open convenience stores or something
With a huff, he lifted himself up and walked off to find an open convenience store, assured that there might be at least one store open. If only that optimism lasted after the FOURTH store he headed off to turn out to be closed, as told by the shop owner.
“Now this is just nuts!” Taki stated, throwing his hands up in the air.
The old Cashier gave him an apologetic nod. “Yeah, but the city council is working fast to restore the electricity and repair buildings. And to be frank, it’s probably a work of a mischievous yo-kai!”
Taki's lips pinched together, the statement echoing in his mind as the old man walked off into the building, mumbling incoherent words.
He has a point, but I’m also not so sure. Yes, gram did say they can cause problems, but usually, they are minor, to the point of causing no real harm. Or…was gram gram just sugarcoating it..?
It took Taki a moment to realize he walked down an unfamiliar alleyway, with very little light reaching in despite it being in the middle of the day. He rubbed his arms as he felt a chill against his skin, and his teeth clenched.
“It’s so cold here…” He thought to himself, attempting to find a way out of the alleyway. As he walked through a broad alleyway, following the light, he shimmered and outlined the ‘exit’. Only problem? He is led into a bigger alleyway, with a giant circled pattern in the middle, and five other paths. Taki let out a disappointed sigh, scratching his head as the architecture continued to confuse him.
How did I even get here- OW!
He let out a grunt as he stumbled into something, slightly jabbing him in the stomach. He let out a pained hiss, his squinted eyes slowly opening to make out what he walked into:
It was some sort of gacha machine, with prize capsules inside. Strangely though, the machine gave out a spooky yet taunting vibe, beckoning the boy to make a gamble. Taki paused for a moment, before digging into his pockets, hesitantly holding them in his palms.
Come on kid, he thought he heard it say Give it a shot
He took a deep breath, in and out, popping a coin into the slot and twisting the knob, until he heard a clink! Taki held the capsule in his hand, examining it. The lid was a red-maroon color with a wisp logo etched on it. He was almost close to not opening it, and yet…he was compelled.
With a strained grunt, he pried the lid off, only to become overwhelmed by a blinding light. “Augh!”
He dropped the capsule as a shadow figure leaped out, floating in midair as it gave him an eerie grin. Taki gulped, his hands and legs trembling as his eyes froze with fear.
“W-who…who are you…?” He whimpered
The figure let out a creepy giggle. “I am…”
They pause, leaving Taki in suspense as she clears her throat, and bows, revealing herself as a maid-like ghost. “Ellow!”
Taki's mind went into a blank state, his entire body flopping down as life flashed before his eyes, and yet he cracked a smile. The ghost maid gave him a worried and panicked expression, approaching him and fans with a handkerchief to get him to come to his senses.
“I am so sorry! This is my first day as a yo-kai maid! If I knew humans had weak hearts, I would have accounted for it!”
Taki lay there for a moment, shaking his head before sitting up, giving Ellow a warm smile in the midst of her panic. “Don’t worry about it!”
“Eh?” The ghost maid paused, cocking her head as she gave the boy an unfocused gaze. “But- with the way I came out of the capsule, I would’ve given you a heart attack…”
The boy shrugged. “You were only making an entrance! I gotta respect the commitment at least.”
Ellow flushed, a sheepish smile forming as she curled a piece of her wavy, wisp-like hair strand. “If you say so…”
A moment passed, and Taki was back on his feet, pondering a few things as Ellow brushed off the dust from his clothes.
“So…you say you're a yo-kai maid???” He queried.
“Yes, that is correct, Sir…”
“Taki.”
“Ah yes, I apologize,” Ellow said with a sigh. “But yes, I am a yo-kai maid.”
Taki hummed quizzingly. “So, if I am right, a yo-kai maid is kind of like a human maid? As in cook, clean, do laundry?”
The ghost maid nods. “Not only that, but like yo-kai butlers, we are to help you befriend yo-kai, giving you hints, looking up yo-kai and what they are if our knowledge is a bit below average..”
Taki beamed, leaning forward towards the maid. “Wow! So, can you help me befriend yo-kai!?” Ellow cheerfully nods, endeared by the boys’ eagerness. “Correct! But…”
She looks around in worried confusion, with Taki watching her movements with patient confusion. “I don’t see any yo-kai here…”
“Oh!” Realization hits him, and he rubs his head. “I’ve…been trying to find yo-kai myself, but…I haven’t gotten any luck.”
“…” The ghost maid stares at him in plain confusion again. “How can you find a yo-kai without a yo-kai watch…?”
The boy paused for a moment, and it became clear that Taki owes her an explanation. “Ah! Well…” He puts the goggles on. “I used these goggles I got from my gram gram- she made these herself and apparently she used this to see yo-kai!”
“Oh😯!” Ellow clasps her hands together, in awe of a human’s feat. “That's wonderful! I never heard of a human being able to craft yo-kai seeing goggles!” She pauses for a second.
“Then again…another human did invent a yo-kai watch model around 60 years ago..” she muttered under her breath and cleared her throat. “Sir Taki, while I applaud your grandmother for crafting something wonderful, I feel like it’d be more, in polite terms, efficient to use a yo-kai watch!”
Taki hummed in thought. “You have a point, but the problem is…” He holds up his dominant arm. “I don’t have a yo-kai watch…”
Ellow peers closer, examining the empty wrist from a reasonable distance. She simply gives Taki a smile. “Well,”
She floats towards the gacha machine, gesturing to the machine with a single, presentative hand. “You always have the Crank-a-Kai!”
“Oh!” Taki steps closer. “Is that what it’s called?”
The maid nods. “Long ago, Crank-a-Kai’s were used to imprison yo-kai and any items related to the supernatural!”
Taki grimaced at the imprisonment statement. “Why were yo-kai imprisoned?”
Ellow looked off into the distance, a sad expression on her face. “There was a time when both humans and yo-kai were…not on good terms with each other. Humans imprisoned yo-kai and yo-kai relentlessly tormented humans. Eventually, the leaders of humans and yo-kai concluded that we had to live in separate planes for some time…”
The boy felt his body droop, bummed out by that explanation. That was before Ellow perked up and gave him a reassuring smile.
“But even then, yo-kai still wandered the human realm, and humans and yo-kai eventually learned they could co-exist! Although, yo-kai will still be prone to mischief, albeit minor. “ She chuckled knowingly.
Taki perked up again, his smile returning.
Ellow let out a sigh as she came down from her infectious giggling. “Anyway, rumor has it that an unknown benefactor has been placing watches into Crank-A-Kai around this city! I bet with enough luck, any money, you can retrieve one!”
Taki dug into his pocket to hold out a single yen coin, looking at the crank-a-kai and back to the item in his palm.
One coin left. With enough luck, I’ll get a yo-kai watch! But, no luck at all? You might get something that's NOT a yo-kai watch. Will I risk it?
He took a few minutes, his thoughts wavering as his eyes shut tightly. Ellow looks on, worried. As he opens his eyes, he grasps the coin, before firmly putting the coin in the slot, turning the knob with determination.
Clank!
He heard something fall and retrieved to capsule, and Ellow returns to his side. They looked at each other, a small, nervous sweat droplet forming on both their cheeks, and gave each other a confident nod.
Taki quickly retrieved the capsule, examining it before opening it. Instead of a wisp, it had an eyeball design etched on the lid. Although hesitantly, he firmly grasps the lid and pulls it off, his eyes shutting as he holds his breath.
“I can’t look,” He breathed. “Is it a yo-kai watch?”
Ellow peered over his shoulder to examine what was inside the capsule. “Oh! Yes indeed, Sir Taki!”
Taki uttered a relief groan, his eyes slowly opening as he took the watch out. It had an octagonal inner base, the colors being green, blue, purple, and pink. The outside of the base was mostly white and dark gray with orange accents.
As he strapped on the watch, a light blue pixelated screen pops up, although it showed no image or video screen, only audio waves.
Hello, My name is Professor Kazumi. What you have on you right now is one of my yo-kai watch creations, The delta watch.
“Oh! So this MUST be the rumored watch model!” Ellow whispered.
Now, I will be frank, these watch models have a certain ability that connects both humans and yo-kai. But, since they were… not approved by the government of the yo-kai world, I had to place only THREE of the completed watches where they least expect them. Although imprudent in practice, my mission is to further the relationship between yo-kai and humans in a positive light. Human, I hope you find this special item quite useful in your quest to befriend yo-kai, and may your connection blossom into something beautiful. Best of luck.
And the screen blinks out, the message is completed. Taki and Ellow remained silent, still in awe that the apparent creator would give them a message.
“Well,” Ellow beamed, clasping her hands together. “We can finally go and find yo-kai to befriend!”
“You're right, Ellow!” Taki responded, his smile faltering as he slowly remembered something. “But…you know what I said earlier. About how I couldn’t find any yo-kai?”
“Correct Sir Taki.”
“…I don’t think it has something to do with the goggles OR the lack of a yo-kai watch.”
Ellow stared at him, puzzled. “What do you mean, Sir Taki?”
Taki went silent for a moment, his train of thought racing. “Before I released you from the capsule, Azalea Heights have been suffering from a lot of things, like power outages and buildings being destroyed overnight!”
Ellow gasped, clearly in genuine shock. “It…could be the work of a yo-kai…”
Taki stares at her, nodding. “That’s what I think, too. Not only that…But, I got a gut feeling. A feeling that the hypothetical yo-kai…has also been driving yo-kai away from Azalea Heights…” —
The camera pans out into the city, and in the distance, sirens can be heard, blaring throughout the corners of the town. From the shadows, a yokai comes into view. His appearance, while that of a cat, isn't make the standard nekomata yokai that populated the yo-kai region. His ears twitched, signaling that he can hear something from the distance. The sounds of thuds and violent scraps, signaling a violent yokai is near.
Time to skedaddle
and with that, the mysterious cat-rabbit yokai, hopped building to building in, away from a unknown threat.

C'mon Yo-Kai Let's be friends! Chapter 1: Exploring the heights
Current Word Count: 2,453 words 13,449 characters A Fanfic about ocs and fankais, mostly a origin about how *this specific* group got together. Updates might be slow but hopefully I'll complete it eventually!
It was around late afternoon in the town of Azalea Heights, Japon. The air was crisp and clean, and yet the aftermath of a suddenly destroyed building was still fresh, with remains of debris covering sidewalks and streets, and caution signs and ‘keep out’ lines surrounding the premises. But in another part of the city, a family had just moved in and arrived today around early noon.
Although, the house itself wasn’t brand new, no; It belonged to the paternal grandmother of the family, an elderly woman in her early 70s who gave her son a scare in terms of medical care. As the family proceeds to remove stuff from luggage and boxes, however, there was a boy who was currently typing an online diary entry, venting out his feelings, as he said them out loud
‘Taki Oshimo here, today we have moved into my gram gram's place in Azalea Heights. I know I'm supposed to finish unpacking my belongings, but to be honest; I am WAY TOO EXCITED to finish unpacking!’
The boy paused, tapping his fingers on the desk, letting his fingers rest for a moment before resuming.
‘I mean, don’t get me wrong- I miss everyone back at my old home, but say- nothing can go wrong with trying to make new friends here! Besides…’
He spins his computer chair, looking at a suitcase of various going away gifts; ranging from flowers, a homemade scrapbook, a few childhood toys given to him by old friends, and a couple of photos. He smiled softly as he turned back to his laptop.
‘I have their memories here. Anyway, gotta go and finish before my mom gives me the business!’
The boy closes the book, taking a deep breath as he heads to finish unpacking, humming a tune akin to ‘September’ by Earth, Wind, and Fire. As he got into the groove of putting his clothes in drawers and organizing his other belongings, he heard a knock at the door.
“Hey dork,” his older sister Junko teased, leaning against the doorframe like a chill person. “When you're done, Gram Gram wants to see you, something about a gift????”
“Oh, neat!” Taki beamed, putting his stuff away in a hurry as he raced past Junko. “I wonder what it is?”
“Well, it’s probably better than my gift,” Junko holds up a stack of cards, bound by a rubber band, her face sour. “I’ll make use of this somehow…”
Taki skipped down the stairs on the way to gram gram's room, nearly bumping into his father in the process. “Sorry, dad!”
“Taki, be careful when entering your gram gram’s room, please! I don’t want her to get into a coughing fit!” He fretted, Taki nodding in understanding as he walked ahead.
Slowly creaking the door open, he takes a good look at the room;
The room was lit up by the ceiling light, showcasing the room for all who entered to see.
While the floors were clean and furnished with a large crochet carpet, desktops, and surfaces were cluttered with photos, yarn, old-timey trinkets, and old, dusty antiques. Taki lightly gagged at the smell of mothballs and coconut. Not a pleasant aroma combo.
An old lady was sitting on the bed, humming a tune as she stared down at a photo, a soft smile curved on her lips.
“Gram Gram?” Taki whispered, closing the door quietly but loud enough so Gram Gram could hear. She perked up, giving him a warm smile.
“Hello dear,” she said as she put down the framed picture, gesturing to Taki to come and sit by her. The floors had a slight creak to them as Taki took a few steps, sitting down on the plush bed next to his grandmother. “Now, I have a gift for you..”
Gram Gram opened the bottom of the bureau with gentle precision, and took out a small box, with detailed carvings etched onto it. Taki leaned in closer, focusing his gaze on the box in curiosity,
“What is it, Gram Gram?”
Gram Gram let out a hearty chuckle. “Just an old accessory from my childhood.”
She unlatched the padlocks and opened them. Inside, was a pair of goggles, the color of orange slightly desaturated with years of being kept away. Taki let out an impressed whistle as she carefully took them out, holding them out for Taki to take.
“U-uh, you sure gram gram?” Taki quizzed, a hint of unsureness in his tone. She gave him an approving nod.
With the go-ahead, he took them in hesitation, giving them a closer look. “Wow, you know, this matches the color of my jacket!”
“I thought so too.” Gram Gram chuckled, her dimpled smile never fading as Taki carefully put them on with playfulness, gently reminding her of her youth. “You know, those goggles weren’t just a simple fashion accessory..”
Taki pushed the goggles up, giving Gram Gram a confused look. “They weren’t?”
She gave him a playful nod. “Let me ask you something.”
Gram Gram fixed her posture, giving Taki her focused gaze. “Have you heard of the creatures called ‘yokai’?”
“Yokai???” He confusedly repeated. He tapped his chin in thought. “They are supernatural creatures residing in and around japon..?”
Gram Gram nodded, relaxing her posture as she collected some old memories. “When I was your age…I made friends, each one was different.” she picked up the picture frame she placed down before, handing it over to Taki.
The picture itself included four kids, including a younger Gram Gram. Yet it only confused Taki further. And Gram Gram could tell.
“You see, Taki,” She paused, her train of thought pausing as she took back the framed photo. “Some of my other friends were yo-kai.”
Taki's eyes grew wide in shock and he hopped off the bed. His mind? Blown.
“H-how is that possible!? I thought yokai were only folk tales!?!”
Gram Gram let out a hearty laugh as Taki started to stammer from both confusion, fear, and excitement. “My boy, please calm down! Your folks will think I'm having a fit.
“But Gram Gram! This is exciting! Humans and yo-kai can be friends!?! How did you do it!?!?!”
Taki covered his mouth as she shushed him, gesturing to tone it down a little bit. Taki slowly sits back down on the bed, mouth still covered.
“You see- I didn’t have a device that allowed me to see yo-kai at first. Sooo I made a pair of yo-kai seeing goggles.”
The boy gasps in realization and excitement, putting back on the goggles as he quickly scans the room. “...I don't see any yokai here.”
Gram gram gives him a knowing look. “Perhaps they are somewhere outside, there are usually a few of them causing some sort of trouble.”
“Trouble?” Taki inquired. “I thought since you were able to befriend yokai they’d all be good or something.”
Gram Gram waved a hand at the statement, scoffing. “The yokai were known to be mischievous creatures in myths, and they are in real life. But, it’s just in their nature. Sometimes, they don’t even mean to cause an inch of harm”
Taki let out a soft hum, nodding in understanding. Sorta. “Alright Gram, I’m heading off!”
Taki gave her a goodbye wave as he opened the door, closing it as Gram Gram waves back.
Taki rushes to put on his shoes, nearly making it out the door before anyone notices. However, a figure appeared behind him before he even touched the doorknob.
“Hold up! Where do you think you're going?” His mother called out to him, her hands on her hips.
Taki paused, an invisible sweat dripping down. It’s not good to lie to your mom at times, but at the same time, if you’d told her that you were going to look for yo-kai, she’d probably think you went nuts.
“I was going,” he drawled for a second ”... on a walk.”
She crooks her eyebrow, not convinced quite yet. “A walk?”
“Yes mama, that is correct.”
She hummed in thought for a minute. “Well, I did take a peek in your room and I saw that you've finished unpacking your belongings…..” she continued humming, leaving Taki on the edge of his toes for an answer.
“Alright, you can go,” Taki let out a soft ‘yus’ as he pumped a fist in the air. “However, I need you to run a quick errand while you're out!” She steps towards the nightstand, and takes out a pen and a notepad, writing something on it. “I need you to go to the bakery on 121 Clover Avenue and buy some bread for your father’s dinner plan.”
She hands Taki the note and a few yen bills, about 1347 JYP. “If you end up having change you can buy a little something for yourself.”
“ ‘Kay mom!” Taki exclaimed, heading out the door. — As Taki walked through the streets of Azalea Heights, he scanned every nook and cranny of the area he was currently surrounded by. From under parked cars, to the corner of buildings, to the light poles. But so far, every single place was yo-kai-free, and the judgemental looks of strangers weren’t helping either.
I’m starting to think Gram Gram was playfully messing with me…
Taki let out a sigh as he entered the bakery, the bell softly alarming people of his presence. The smell of fresh goods wavered through the air, calming him down a little bit. He lets out a deep breath as he walks to the counter. He’s kinda surprised that there isn’t a line. Actually….
Taki took a quick look around. The place is almost like a ghost town, the only people that seem to be here are a few bakers in the back, a girl who just walked in, and a girl right behind the counter.
“Hello,” the counter girl called out, giving Taki a soft smile as he turned around. “How can I help you?”
Taki took a moment to reach into his pocket, grabbing the note his mom gave him. “Yes can I get some,” he paused, squinting his eyes as he took a closer look. “...Shokupan..?”
“Of course! Let me get it ready for you!”
She hummed as she went into the back, leaving Taki alone. Although he isn’t COMPLETELY alone. There is a girl right behind him, But it seems like she isn’t much of a talker. And then, the whole room is filled with awkwardness.
Taki fumbled and played with his thumbs for a bit, before taking a deep breath. “So, is the bread here good?”
The girl thought for a minute and then nodded. “The peach and melon bread is really good! But I mostly come here to simply visit my friend Momoka.”
“Momoka…? Oh! The girl who works behind the counter!”
She nods. “Yeah, she’s recently graduated from elementary school, so she and I usually hang out here or whenever she is free. Although, she might get out early thanks to slow business and…a few accidents.”
“Accidents?” Taki queried, a hint of worry in his tone. “What kind of accidents?”
“Like,” she pauses for a moment. “Street-wide blackouts, buildings breaking down, monsters in the sewers-”
“Monsters in the what?”
“Oh?” She gives Taki an eerie look. “Haven’t you heard? There is a monster living in the sewers. Legends say, that if you get too close at the strike of midnight, the monster comes out and drags you into the sewers, intending on having you for breakfast ....”
Taki felt his legs wobble, his mind going blank as his heart sank. “UUUUUUUUUUUUH-”
“Sumiko!!” Momoka called out, scolding the girl. “You gotta stop scaring people with that fake story!”
Oh, it was fake.
Taki sighed in relief as Sumiko chuckled mischievously. “I can’t help it~ Besides! People should think twice before believing in those stories, but I am sorry. I guess I should’ve given you a heads-up.”
Taki waved his arms assuring “No, no, no! You're all good! All though to be fair, I did get a sense of fear..”
And I’m glad there is no such thing as a sewer yokai...
A few moments later, Momoka comes out with Taki’s bread, packaged with gentleness and care. “That’ll be ¥1077.48 please!”
Taki, while not having divided change, gave her the entire bill. In exchange, he received change back.
“Thank you, and have a nice day!” Momoka shouted
“Thank you!” Taki replied as he walked out the door, the bell announcing his departure. Momoka and Sumiko paused for a moment, with the latter speaking up.
“That kid has some cool goggles.” — It was nighttime now, and Taki was dressed in his pj’s now, writing a last diary entry for the day, and of course, talking as he typed.
‘So far, no luck finding and befriending yo-kai. The good news is, I made two new friends already! I think. I dunno, we seemed to hit it off well but we’ll see. Through, Sumiko mentioned stuff about blackouts and destroyed buildings. Could it be the work of a yokai? Maybe I’ll start investigating soon, but answers could show up at any moment, so for now, Peace ✌️’
Taki closed his laptop, stretching as he let out a huge yawn and made his way towards his bed, slumping against it as he lazily pulled the blanket over him, sighing in contentment as he drifted off to sleep
----
Meanwhile, in another part of Azalea Heights…
A Gokudō was in the middle of getting a beatdown from a monstrous creature, his fellow gang members beaten and unconscious before them. And his weapon broke in half. The creature was striking him left and right, giving the yokai no area to breathe. Eventually, the creature whipped him with its tail, flinging him and causing him to crash into a concrete wall.
The Gokudō breathed heavily, grunting in pain as he tried to sustain his injuries.
“You guys got some nerve attacking us from behind…” A voice behind the creature called out. “Then again, most of you yo kai would do ANYTHING to try to get rid of us what…”
The Gokudō growled, spitting out a mixture of saliva and blood against the concrete ground, glaring at the two in contempt.
“The yokai of Azalea Heights all agreed: Neither of you belongs here…”
The human walked out of the shadows, his arms crossed as a yo-kai watch dangled with movement, bound by a chain around his neck.
“That’s strange…” They paused, before the yo-kai next to him growled, prepared for a final attack. “Because last time I checked Unless you know what we went through…”
The monstrous yokai launches forward, its arms raised for the finishing blow.
“You don’t get to dictate where we go…”
