Langblr Word of the Day Challenge - July Edition
So… because langblr’s been a bit dead lately (and once again I’ve been awful at creating original content), I thought I’d bring this challenge back! You can read about the challenge here. It officially starts on the 1st of July, but of course you can start later (or earlier!) or do it a different month. The point is just to give you a little inspiration to work with :)
This month’s words are:
jewellery
question
farm
emergency
recipe
children
music
distance
ancient
date
health
proud
habit
human
pond
sense
wonder
street
material
crime
home
language
help
feeling
achievement
ink
electricity
space
nature
opposite
history
There’s also a list from February (in the original post) and April. Feel free to do one of those lists instead, or mix and match!
Remember to tag your posts with #langblrwotdchallenge :) Good luck!

Lesson 1
The verb ‘to be’
Lesson 1 Vocabulary

быть: The verb ‘to be’
быть, pronounced byt is only used in past and future tense. That is to say, if you are saying ‘was’ or ‘will be’. When saying ‘is’ the word is not used and is sometimes replaced by a simple dash ( – ) in text.
To give an example, when you introduce yourself, with “I am [name]” you use я (ya) which just means ‘I’ or ‘me’ and then your name. My name is Alma, so I would say “Я Алма” I am Alma.
Sometimes in written text, the exclusion of this verb in the present tense is pointed out by using a dash –. For instance, a textbook may tell you that Peter is an actor, it could be written as “пётр - актёр” (Petr aktor) but “пётр актёр” means the same thing. There are rules to the dash, but they will be talked about another time.

Sources
I am a cheap-ass but I’m sure that I know enough about the wonderful ways of the internet that I can find some good, free, online courses. As of right now:
https://www.russianforfree.com/   (Goes into detail about grammar and includes audio clips. What I am basing my syllabus around, my main source)
http://www.russianlessons.net/ (More vocabulary heavy with short explanations. Includes seperate sections for grammar. For cross referencing with the first source and filling in any gaps)
https://app.languagedrops.com/ (for vocabulary and for memorization. I chose this one because it is available on mobile and pc, though it has a time limit per day)
https://www.duolingo.com/ (Ahhhh, the classic. Vocabulary repetition, quizes to check up with my abilities and for listening to sentences)
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/language-learning-with-ne/bekopgepchoeepdmokgkpkfhegkeohbl  Language learning with Netflix and Youtube (Pretty self explanatory. It’s a chrome extention that lets you have subtitles in your target language and your 1st language. If you run your mouse over a word it will give you a dictionary definition. For the lazier days)

Hi
Alright, so! Reasons for doing this? Keeping me responsible in my language learning by assuming strangers on the internet will peer pressure me. Also Tumblr does have a surprisingly strong Langblr community. But anyway, as it goes, I wanted to learn a language with a different alphabet and a history. I went for Japanese. Then whaddaya know! I find out that Russia! Has free university education! I have 2 years to learn the language to a point of proficiency, I will be using this as a way to take and share notes as well as document and keep all my resources in one place. And of course making it look nice :)
