Trigger warnings: The twins’ trauma, talk of abusive parents

“Don’t open it. It’s not worth it.”

Tam’s voice was barely above a whisper, but filled with exhaustion and unspoken grief. He had been through this before. Another letter, another complaint, another shift of blame. It was Groundhog Day in the most torturous way possible. It was too hollow to be emotional, but too emotional to be empty.

“But it’s the third one this week.” Linh twisted her fingers slowly, staring at the letter. She sat there on her bed and tried to keep her tears at bay. Although crying didn’t make her weak, and nothing really could, it made her vulnerable. Out in the open, easy to prey on. Easy to manipulate, with no free choice in any matter. That was the worst feeling of all. “I didn’t know that they knew where we stayed.”

Tam paused, picking at an empty Prattles candy wrapper. “Well, they do. But that doesn’t mean we have to answer them, or give them any time of day.”

Linh nodded. Her hair cascaded down as she hung her head low in dejection, further obscuring her view in the low moonlight. “I don’t want to go through this again. If they visit-”

“They won’t. Tiergan won’t let them in.”

“That doesn’t mean anything. They have their ways of getting what they want.” Linh sighed. “What I’m trying to get at is that I’m… conflicted, I guess.” She stopped again to let Princess Purryfins settle on her lap. “Some rational part of me knows that this isn’t my fault, that I don’t deserve any of this. But you know what they’ve said. How we’re ungrateful, how our pent-up trauma and feelings and mental issues ‘aren’t real,’ or if they are, then it’s our fault for refusing those stupid, stuck-up therapists. It’s so damn hard to keep fighting the Neverseen when I can barely win the fight against myself.”

Tam scooted closer to her, so that he was leaning against the bed. “I know. Believe me, I get it. It’s hard for me to not, you know, put myself out of my misery. It’s hard to… find a reason to keep going. And there’s no secret key that’ll open a door to paradise, whether we live or die. But we’re not alone. We have each other.”

She hummed. “Two broken siblings in a broken world. I wonder where that gets us.”

“Safety. Maybe freedom. But we’ll survive.”

“I don’t want to survive. I want to live. I want to heal and not have this heaviness in my heart and this demon on my shoulder telling me I’m not enough. I want people to stop looking at me like I’m weak and helpless, but I don’t want them to fear me either.” She turned to look at him. “How do you do it?”

“Do what?”

“You’ve dealt with all of this and embraced the fact that people are scared of your power by purposely being intimidating. How do you do it?”

“I haven’t dealt with it, Linh,” he mumbled. “I’ve just pushed it down. Suppressed it, then called on it every time I needed to look strong. They still underestimate me, but not as much as they do for you. That’s a mistake, you know. You’re stronger than they’ll ever know.”

“I shouldn’t need to be strong. Not when I’m this young and I don’t know what I’m doing.”

“No, you shouldn’t,” he agreed. “But now that you are, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. And you’re still allowed to feel weak and scared and angry. It’s the least the universe can give you for all that you’ve been through.”

“You’re talking about Exillium, the Black Swan, and our parents as if they didn’t affect you, too.”

He shrugged. “I’m not saying they didn’t. I just don’t like talking about it. I prefer to listen.”

“Well, you can rely on me if you ever need anything. I’m here for you, just like you’ve been there for me. I care.”

Tam turned his head away to blink some tears away. “Thanks.”

“Anytime.” Princess Purryfins rolled over and fell onto the bed sheets softly as Linh wrinkled her nose.  “Ugh, what is this? We’re siblings, we’re supposed to pretend to hate each other, not emotionally support each other.”

“We’re also twins with shared trauma living under the same roof,” Tam pointed out, getting up to leave. “You’re not getting rid of me anytime soon.” Right as he left, he chucked the Prattles wrapper, which hit her forehead and landed in her hair.

“Hey!” Linh yelled in protest.

“Catch you later, loser!”

She scoffed. “Dork.”

A blanket of silence fell over Solreef once more, and the moon illuminated the dreaded letter. Linh was aching to read it, to at least browse its contents to see if they carried even a hint of remorse or concern. It was tempting, but Tam was right. It wasn’t worth it. They weren’t worth it.

Maybe this was healing. Cutting harmful people off, and letting your real family find you along the way.

She locked it in her desk drawer with the rest of them, where she vowed she’d never turn back to them. It was a graveyard now.  A graveyard of empty promises and trapped emotions.

Fanfic writing is spending an hour trying to figure out a specific model of a car that you’re only going to mention once and then researching specific freeway maps for another detail before keysmashing in frustration when you can’t find the writing flow and i think that‘s very beautiful 💜

1, 5, and 39 for the ask game?

1. How long ago did you start reading fanfiction? Writing fanfiction? Tbh I don’t read a lot of fanfic, some exceptions are when I really want to see content for some of my fandoms or when a friend has a fic they really want me to read, so maybe in the late months of 2020 or something like that. As for writing it, coming up on a year? It hasn’t been p consistent tho, so I’ll make sure to make up for that!

5. What are your fanfic pet peeves? Do they have a huge effect on whether or not you decide to read something?

Not a lot of pet peeves, I guess no paragraph breaks, major tagging errors (basically anything that makes it difficult to tell who‘s talking), and pure direct statements throughout the entire fic? I guess what I mean by the last one is like blatant “Brianna’s 17, and she just started her new classes, but she had no friends!” Instead, I rather a little imagery and show not tell with something like

“Another year to waste. She sat in the corner of the bleachers as unfamiliar faces rushed by, chatting excitedly without a care in the world. Brianna sighed, the wind keeping her company as she checked her phone. Not even a happy birthday text. No ‘Happy 17th!’ She wasn’t worth that to them. Brianna could fade with the breeze right then and there, and no one would know the difference.”

(Obvi I’m no professional writer and I wrote this in like 60 seconds but I feel like that gives a little more depth and emotion to it!)

My only major pet peeve is unnecessary or insensitive descriptions - like, pls don’t tell me this person of color has “caramel skin” or randomly throw in a “the Latina girl walked over,” there are other more appropriate ways to let the reader know what your character looks like!

39. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

I think I’m p good at dialogue! I don’t find it difficult to have character’s speech bounce off of one another. I think I’m improving a little on imagery and describing setting too
