May I ask, doc, as a huge admirer of your blog, where you first started thinking about writing certain ships. For example, when you first saw birds of prey, did you automatically think 'wow these bitches gay' or did you look on Twitter and see it, etc etc. And what made you like them enough and inspired you to start writing them?

You're too sweet.

It depends on the ship, but a general rule of thumb is that if two characters are partners in their endeavors (crime, paranormal FBI investigations, etc.) I'm probably gonna ship them. And if two villains are so much as standing next to each other, I'm probably gonna ship them.

For ZsaszMask specifically, the seeds were sown when the earliest rumors and leaks that Zsasz would be Roman's enforcer and bodyguard came out. Those early rumors were saying that Roman would be openly gay and pining and dependent on Victor, while in the movie his sexuality is more ambiguous and while very dependent on Victor, Victor is the one whose yearning is much more obvious. The particular sites that were publishing the supposed leaks and the tone in which they did were, uh, less than reputable, so I had doubts. But I did believe the characters would be working together and was hoping for a bodyguard crush situation because I love that shit.

Then the trailer came out that had that one scene (with an additional shot not actually in the movie) where Roman's got his arm around Victor and they're laughing together about Dinah beating ass outside, and, like, I was already excited about the movie, but then that became at least 65% of the reason I wanted to see it. (That was a great day on Twitter with everyone screenshotting and giffing that scene specifically, lol.) Then I saw the movie, and yeah, these bitches gay. They are exceedingly queer, and they are in love.

As for what gets me actually writing for a ship, either headcanons/meta or fic, that's harder to say. Like, my first OTP, the ship that got me into fandom, was Mulder and Scully from The X-Files, and while I read tons of fic and meta, I never felt compelled to write any myself. Steve Trevor and Wonder Woman in the DCEU movies break my heart, and I just want them to be together, but aside from musing on how this could be possible in the broader universe I set my DC fanfics in, I don't really write about them. Maybe I am just more compelled to be actively creative for same-gender ships or ships where at least one character isn't cis? Maybe it has to be a ship where I'm specifically projecting on/relating to/fixating on at least one of the characters? Maybe the less exploration and content there is on the characters and ship in the canon, the more I want to fill in the gaps? Maybe some of all of it? Who knows. I don't really care much either. As long as I'm having fun and getting my brain to make the good chemicals, that's all that really matters to me.

Again for ZsaszMask, I mean, those two men are some of the wettest little meow meows I've ever seen. Pathetic, heavily queer-coded bad guys desperately seeking validation in the most fucked-up ways imaginable. Just peak babygirl behavior. Of course I was going to be obsessed. I was also just months into realizing I wasn't cis at the time and still trying to work out what that meant to me, and something about Zsasz fucking screamed Gender to me, so he got to be an outlet for that. And I just wanted more of them, and there wasn't, and I wanted to give them a happy ending. So I made them kiss and have babies and put them in a dozen AUs to kiss and have babies and commit atrocities while holding hands.

And I did that for two and a half years and will in all likelihood do it some more. I'm just time-sharing my brain with the gay pirates right now.

Thanks for asking! I didn't expect to write this much in answer. It was fun to think about my boys again.

I love how zsaszmask fanfics are very much split half way in terms of content. There's 50% that is basically just the most domestic shit ever, usually roman having an episode and victor calming him down, or just both of them in some sort of domestic fluffy situation. And then the other 50% is just the most absolutely shameless, kinky, horrificly detailed and violent smut you've ever seen in your life.

And I fucking consume all of it.

I have come to terms with the fact that I literally spend all of my time doing zsaszmask shit at this point. I procrastinate writing so fucking much then end up reading @ronaldrx zsaszmask fuxs for hours until 4am. Honestly it's worth it though, if your looking for the best zsaszmask fics out there, pls go and check theirs out!! One if the most talented fanfic writers literally ever imo, and probably my favourite zsaszmask writer out there ngl.

I've been thinking recently, what would Romans and Victors contact names be for each other on their phones?? Like I can see victor having to have roman as something professional like 'boss' but it definitely would be more than that.... I'm envisioning something like 'boss (roman🥰)'
