New and Updated Harrison Mayes Markers and Signs
Since I began documenting Henry Harrison Mayes work online, I knew I would rely on people who know more than I do and visit places I will never be able to visit. I found that the people who conserved the most knowledge before internet posts on blogs or social media were a thing were three women. Eleanor Dickinson, who documented the Mayes in the 70s and 80s, Catherine Mayes who wrote a book…

Highway Mile Marker 0: Cardboard Sign
I found references to Mayes markers in the book Mountain Holiness: A photographic narrative from 2003 which can be ordered via the UT Press website or borrowed digitally over at archive.org. It features markers in Ewing, VA, Harlan, KY and this cardboard sign by Mayes.

A Mayes Sign at Finster's Paradise Garden
Last year I found out that Henry Harrison Mayes and Folk Art legend Rev. Howard Finster knew each other and Mayes even influenced Finster with his sign ministry. The first clue about this relationship I found in Norman Girardot’s book Envisioning Howard Finster: The Religion and Art of a Stranger from Another World. And digging deeper, I learned about Eleanore Dickinson and how she brought the…

The Appalachian Storyteller - Appalachia's Sign Man
The YouTube Channel “The Appalachian Storyteller” features Harrison Mayes story. Found my Conway, AR sign in there, so I assume one or another image was sourced from here as well. Which is cool and would be even cooler if referenced. But I found a few more leads in the comments so maybe I’m able to add more to the map.

It's hard to tell if this is a genuine Mayes cross.
I've seen images of crosses with a similar typeface attributed to him. Those were older, and given the bad paint job and the time frame, this might be one of those older crosses, painted over by someone who “took care” of the cross.
Another interesting fact about this cross is, that the official Ferris print I found, has a slightly different angle, with visible buildings in the background. And it got cropped in the bottom. The photo used in the Lucinda William album is basically from the same shot. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the credits for the photos, but it's by William R. Ferris.

July 1937. "Georgia road signs." Photo by Dorothea Lange, evidently a connoisseur of juxtapositional humor.
I don't think the "Prepare to meet thy god" is a Mayes sign, but who knows.

Killer track by Cager McQueen and the White Tower Gospel Singers.
McQueen's records are hard to come by, and if, they are quite pricey. I don't know why. But the music is really good, and it's all original songs written by McQueen.
TO ALL OUR FRIENDS Once again we come to you by means of recording and again with all new songs taken from our big selection of new songs, that Brother McQueen has composed by the help of the Lord. We have tried to pick the most requested. I hope your choice is on this record. If not, we would like to hear from you as to your choice. I am sorry to say that the words to these songs are not available at this time. We don't have song books, but might in the very near future.
Well, we have the White Tower Gospel Singers with us on this recording, singing and playing. I am very proud of these fine singers. They are all saved boys and are a great blessing to us. When we are in revival, they often visit singing and playing. They are also a great blessing to our church at White Tower, Kentucky, ten miles south of Covington, Kentucky, on KY. 16, where you will find a warm welcome from our Pastor, Charles R. Gulley and the whole church. I have been here as a member for better than ten years. We here at the church, along with the singers and pastor, join together in hoping this record will be a blessing to you and a spiritual up lifting.
Seeing the late hour that we are living in, knowing the hour of the Lord is nigh at hand, let us present our body as a living sacrifice unto the Lord for the winning of lost souls and be looking for our Lord who has faithfully promised to keep us and deliver us in that great day of the Lord.

A rabbit-hole too deep to go down further, but by researching the Ohio Bluegrass and Gospel scene I came across the Preacher, Businessman and hustler, Kash Amburgy.
Kash D. Amburgy was a Pentecostal preacher who promoted the ministries of members of William Branham's campaign team.[4] Amburgy was well-known for his open support of snake handling in the church, which drew great skepticism from the general public — especially after faithful congregants were injured, and fought to oppose laws created by the Kentucky State Legislature to protect innocent victims in the snake-handling churches. -- Source

Harrison Hayes (sic!) and Middlesboro, KY mentioned in the book “The Serpent Handlers: Three Families and Their Faith” by Fred Brown, and Jeanne McDonald
Middlesboro, KY connects two topics that this website tries to investigate. Harrison Mayes and his road sign ministry and serpent handling in Appalachia. I was hoping to see Harrison Mayes mentioned in the book “The Serpent Handlers: Three Families and Their Faith” by Fred Brown and Jeanne McDonald, which portraits the well-known Coots family and I was not disappointed. Interestingly, the author…

December 1940. "Religious sign on highway between Columbus and Augusta, Georgia, indicating revival of interest in religion. This sign was painted red, white and blue." Under "God," we see that these "Bible Signs" were the work of "David Brinkman evangelist" of Augusta. Medium format acetate negative by Marion Post Wolcott. (via O America! | Shorpy Old Photos | Framed Prints)
Harrison Mayes signs weren’t that wordy, but certainly an inspiration to other evangelists.

All for Jesus Singers
The book The Persecuted Prophets by Karen W. Carden, Robert W. Pelton mentioned the existence of a music group called the All for Jesus Singers that went “on tour”. This is at least the second mention of a named music project out of the serpent handling community, beside Tommy and Lou Coots. Although only the Coots formally released music on record, back then (as far as I know). The All for Jesus…

The Singing Proffitts: "Didn't It Rain"
---
Tell of His Wonderful Love
Since the beginning the ears of man have been thrilled by the blending of the sounds of the wind, the birds, the water and the beasts, and the harmonies emitting from the human voice accompanied by some musical instrument, and the most beautiful sound is voices singing songs of praise and devotion to the almighty God. The Singing Proffitts are one of the most thrilling to hear as they lift their voices in songs of the Gospel. Dewey Proffitt was born in Clay Co., Ky.. his lovely wife Thelma was born in Hamilton, Ohio, they have two lovely daughters, Darla, age 8, and Tammy age 13. Darla has been singing with her parents since she was two years old. She does a wonderful job in "Walking in Jerusalem Just Like John". The Proffitts have been singing for quite some time in churches around the Tri-State area, where they get many, many requests for records. Due to this and their devoted love for hymns and gospel songs they decided to record their first LP album. After hearing only one song on the album, I am sure you will agree this will not be their last. They are not only wonderful singers but compose some, beautiful songs. The title song "Tell of His Wonderful Love", "The Walk to Calvary”, "Beautiful Gates of Home", "When I Walk Down the Streets of Gold", and "Human Enough to Know", were written by Thelma Proffitt. The Proffitts are members of the Westside Pentecostle Church, of Hamilton, Ohio, Rev. Pearl Robinson, Pastor. The Proffitts, Rev. Jones and myself wish to thank The Laurel Co., partners, and J. D. Jarvis for the wonderful work they did in making this LP album possible.
