I'm trying to ask a question delicately and may not do it well. I'm truly asking respectfully and curiously with an open mind. The line is:
"And Joel has never noticed that she has sunspots across her knuckles."
I feel like there's a stigma in this world against normal aging in women (aka sun spots, aka age spots, aka liver spots). It feels weird for joel, a man probably with his own sunspots, hones in on that in a woman. Probably I'm missing?
hello there, interesting question - personally, i think the line in context changes how it's can be viewed. the full passage is:
"Lips purse and pucker around final sips of wine, and then... and then Rachel reaches across the table and places her hand atop his. And Joel has never noticed that she has sunspots across her knuckles. Never noticed that she wears a ring on her pinkie finger, one with a dark emerald stone in the middle. Never noticed the thin white scar beside the nail on her index."
the point of this part and these descriptions is to show that he's never been this close, this touchy, with rachel, and that there are things about her he has never seen [or looked for] before -> not that he is critical of signs of her aging.
i agree that there is plenty of bullshit stigma around women aging - i'm not really sure what you're question is here though. hope this helps x
