After picking up really cool treats for myself at TFCon I knew I wanted to properly display my Transformers collection. They have now usurped Star Wars and DC real estate on my shelves. I'm really glad to have everything visible again.
What's most dangerous is that I have more room for Masterpiece figures!

Gearing up for TFCon Baltimore! Can you guess who I'll be dressing as...?
This art will make its way onto a new jacket, but I haven't decided how I'm going to do that. The hand painted style would be most fitting, but I'm also tempted to produce this as a vinyl graphic to heat press onto the jacket. I feel a potential to sell art prints and garments of my designs, so I may be trying a few options with this one.

Not pictured:
My 90 minute escapade to transform this beautiful bastard.
Skywarp's pompous strafe attack on a lone Autobot medic.
Said medic running for cover, finding none, then being impaled right between the lock shafts and taken ten thousand feet over Mount Saint Hillary.
First Aid makes his ten thousand foot descent without aileron affirmations.
Suddenly: 'I gotta roll for it!"
Quick waist180 into a Datsun Vanette C120. Four thousand feet until kissing dirt. Skywarp arcs around for another passing strike.
First Aid bounces hard, his four Goodyears doing their damnedest to protect him. Good thing they're actual rubber.
Medic asteroid now becomes medic surface-to-air projectile. Skywarp can't bank quickly enough. The collision is absolutely brutal. You had to be there.
First Aid wakes up feeling like Ratchet all the time: half-dead and grumpy. It doesn't suit him, but neither does a fellow Cybertronian damaged beyond transformation, in need of rapid response. He's got a job to do.

I realized I never officially presented the finished jacket!
Older posts will show my sketching process as I designed the overall illustration, using X-Transbots Paean (my favorite MP Hoist and first MP scale figure) as a model. We were quickly approaching the day of our flight to Burbank, and I had decided to postpone painting this artwork until TFCon in Baltimore later this year.
But my dad graciously offered to take the reins. He excels in this format, having painted pinup art, often of his own designs, on flight jackets for WWII reenactors for more than the past ten years. He found Hoist's vehicle mode a refreshing change of subject.
I couldn't be more pleased and more proud of the work my Dad has given me-- in this single piece, but also more broadly in the art skills he encouraged from me from a very young age. This particular collaboration holds a very special place in my heart.
And then meeting Peter Renaday yesterday, Hoist's best friend, and seeing his appreciation for this jacket and for his signature... It was wonderful.
----
Encouraging words from the writers and voice actors of G1 have instilled in me a new drive to create. I'm so excited to develop more fan art of Transformers that I hope other fans will appreciate this year.

I feel so honored to have met Mr. Renaday, the voice of Grapple. He was very kind and appreciative of everyone at the con!

Yes, I'm quietly playing with Skywarp in the hotel bathroom while @foxxiwaves sleeps. What an awesome gift from them. This has me considering more toy photography when we get back home, but also using masterpiece figures as art references.
For those who are curious, Skywarp is my favorite (more evil-oriented) Decepticon, while Breakdown is my favorite Decepticon overall. Excited to have the two interacting with each other on my studio desk.
----
It's going to take me a while to fully process how amazing this TFCon was for me-- especially with it ending on Peter and Frank's heartfelt discussion about their time together working for Transformers. What a special experience. I'd like to write more about my weekend in a future post.
To those of you who I met in person, it was great to meet you! I'm looking forward to TFCon in Baltimore later this year (which is in my backyard) to do this all over again, and I'll enjoy keeping up with the excitement here as we approach the date.

Great first day! I hope to meet more Transformers fans today between what sound like very cool panels.
I'll still be dressed as Hoist-- come say hi!
Had an excellent first day of our first TF Con! We both had so much sensory overload, but honestly had an absolutely fantastic time! We were dressed as Hoist (@hoistsautobody ) and First Aid. :)
Tumblr media
I was mistaken for Ratchet and Knock Out and "oh, shoot, i know who you are!" a lot, and Hoist got lots of compliments on his jacket, so all around a good time! We love giving some love to the less popular characters!
We'll be back tomorrow too! Say hey if you see us! We'll be hanging around as Hoist and Soundwave for day 2.
We're friendly, just a little shy!

Hoist Goes To Hollywood!!
We got through airport nonsense with no problems, no holdups, our plane was ontime, and no one passed out right in front of me by the bathrooms this trip, so...all in all! A good endeavor!
@hoistsautobody and I have arrived for TFCon LA. Autobot medical B team, reporting for duty!
Say hey if you see us around!

Can you believe TFCon LA is less than 3 weeks away??
My Dad offered to help me paint the jacket design and I'm happy to take him up on it. Here's the sketch laid out with color blocking-- I'm so excited to see the finished product.

The vibes are off on this fine Sunday night, so let's throw ourselves into some easy, repetitive work....
I'm so psyched to have my machine working again and a project to make! (That feel when your day job and your hobbies are kinda the same thing...)
Keep it blastin', Decepticons!,

I'm not happy with the font yet, but it feels great to see the whole graphic now. X-Transbots Paean has been a great model.
Once I've finalized the text, I'll copy the sketch to save it, then prototype the colors in pencil.

The outfit is really coming together now!
We're opting for airport-friendly costumes to dress for TFCon LA, which means I don't have to scratch build a helmet just yet. Baltimore's TFCon in November is less than an hour's drive from our house, so we can bring anything we're willing to carry that day.
I'm really pleased with these shades I found at Walmart. They're a pretty perfect match to Hoist's visor. And I think the duct tape does the trick.
All that's left for March 8th is some yellow knee pads, knitted green gloves that K is almost finished, and the jacket artwork.
I can't wait! Hope to meet and hang with you Transformers fans!

My pants! They arrived! They're just what I wanted!
After a trial run of much of the outfit, we've learned a few things. The Dickies style just works great with the gators and boots. Proper workwear kneepads would look perfect. I'll still go with reflective tape in large bands across my legs. A longer mechanic's apron in Kelly green would be nice and not too difficult to sew. And Hoist's actual head will look so much less goofy.
What do you think?
