and also the question of where in the world the dead poets society even came from especially name-wise? i can see the idea of it springing up but like what if keating’s group wasn’t the first dead poets society?

like okay maybe we’re getting a bit cultic here but y’know what? poetry and art in general is the bulk of everything we indulge in and i’m not taking any criticism.

somewhere out there keating’s group huddled together to not just read poetry but to reach for the stars even when their bodies were still on earth, to envision dreams, explore halls in the mind that bring out humanity, prance in meadows and dive in waterfalls and twirl in the rain, and actually breathe in the spirit of life right from the earth’s core even when everything around them seemed hopeless. their little world in their cave drummed around them with passion. someone somewhere also did the same before them and keating’s friends trailed right behind along with neil’s group just after them and perhaps someone else after that.

We talk a lot about the dead poets society. But think about the original D.P.S., where Mr. Keating was a member. Imagine their poetry , imagine their ideas...imagine what made Mr. Keating as Mr. Keating that influenced the new D.P.S.

i love the dps fandom but i feel like some of you guys misinterpret cameron just for the sake of villainizing him

the way i have a rant draft about this written and it low key is so long that i could probably unravel it via constitutional ass scroll and use it as a carpet

I think it is very telling that in the opening scene Cameron carries and represents the pillar of tradition, Knox the pillar of discipline and Neil the pillar of excellence.

I‘d write an essay abt this.

— but my other interpretation is definitely that heavy generational trauma comes into play.

if we assume that mr. perry grew up in the great depression (since a lot of the fathers there are very old most likely due to the history with the vietnam war and getting drafted etc), he most likely had a not so bright childhood. even just the traditional view of raising men in 1920s-1960s conservative america alone is enough of a struggle growing up—

now add the great depression in—an environment where most fathers abandoned their families entirely in search of jobs (and most likely traveling so far across the country just to never get one), mothers typically gave their babies away for free because they couldn’t raise them anymore, dustbowls were an unstoppable force that absolutely shredded through towns and farms and left barely anything left in its paths, and masses of desperate people were in breadlines in order to feed themselves. would a child growing up in this environment thrive in any sense? absolutely not (plus this adds a type of class/poverty trauma to an unimaginable level for those who grew up in the roaring twenties).

so just growing up in that era and that environment with most likely traditional parents for that time period is what made mr. perry the man he is—he forces opportunities on his son that he was never able to get in that time period. now did he take away neil’s creative expression, individualism, and confidence to argue against him/criticize him in the process? absolutely. did he have bad intentions? not entirely.

this type of trauma most likely stirs up somebody to push themselves to survive. there was never room for passion and art and romance and creativity. the only essential part of life is living, and to live means to make a living. america’s society has purposefully bred a country where nobody can express themselves freely and survive at the same time. we need to worry about money constantly in order to purchase the necessities we need to survive.

by all means, i absolutely think mr. perry wants neil to be successful and happy and loves his son to no end. however, he projects his own responses to his trauma on neil (and it’s not his fault! all generational trauma, societal pressures, and no mental health help available!!!!). he wants neil to succeed, have a high paying job, and make enough money to survive, however, he leaves no room for neil’s free expression. his automatic response is to decline neil’s participation in theatrical art because he was raised only to see the importance of surviving when he doesn’t realize that art is part of surviving— that although getting the money to buy food and shelter covers your important material needs, it never truly calms down the soul.

mr. perry never grew up in a household where art and expression was appreciative- only survival was.

—now imagining mr. perry growing up in modern society and having neil within the 80s/90s or 21st century, i picture him being a father that pushes his son but is definitely someone who’s more open and aware. i think modern mr. perry would’ve been more comfortable with letting his son do his own thing as long as he also made a good living.

—also imagining modern mr. perry being accepting of todd and neil makes me wanna sob

Okay another unpopular opinion, I think Mr.Perry loved Neil. Ik, ik he was still very evil and I do think that he is still a terrible parent but I feel that he did love Neil. He wanted the best for him and in his own cruel and twisted way, loved him. Maybe he was never shown love so he didn’t know how to show it to Neil but I think this is even more heartbreaking. And in the end I do think he mourned Neil like a father would. He wasn’t a good father but he still loved his son.

And I think the poets understood, they still hate him and felt incredibly angry whenever they saw him knowing what he did but at least at the funeral they all said their polite greetings and mourned together.

cuz i keep seeing those videos with my love mine all mine on my feed with consistently ugly-sob-inducing stories and roman empires so now i have this long list i wanna share

its kind of a 50/50 since bro barely has screen time, yet i see his character oftentimes being portrayed as the class asshole

i think it’s clear that him and his friends commit tomfoolery and are overall jerks but to think that he’s the more sensible, level-headed guy makes a lot of sense to me—kinda similar to charlie in a way

like he knows limits and when to not push them even if he doesn’t come off that way. all bro does is chill in class and stare off into the windows daydreaming (as shown in the whole ripping out the poetry intro scene). bro doesn’t wanna be there. he’s just chilling and honestly same💀

• spencer’s actual treatment in the movie

ik we love this man, and our headcanons (or at least what i’ve seen and my own for the most part) say that people treat him well but low key everyone be on his shit

like it brings up the question of whether or not this is considered bullying cause any scene i see he’s either blatantly shoved around or even the guys around him purposely steal his medicine and pass it around so he can’t have it (including stick participating in this)-

like i think there’s some limits to being a jerk and idk how spencer really feels throughout the movie cuz he’s a background character :////

• the fact that ginny’s character just gets completely cutout. like she has a few lines to begin with and then the movie comes out and she ends up being a non-speaking extra in the play like i’m- what happened???

let me explain cuz i love them but also feel bad for their characters

like low key they’re just used as experiments for the cave (implied by charlie in a deleted scene that wasn’t recovered although i think this part is in the original script as well if i remember correctly)

although he brings them back a second time in a deleted scene where they’re all dancing around outside of the cave on the night of the play only for him to make out with one of them in another deleted scene that wasn’t recovered… (( this was revealed in an old interview on someone working behind the scenes btw ))

so like i kinda feel bad for them. like y’all just there for show but i wish you had more lines and other purposes besides possibly not passing a bechdel test ://////

^ lowkey this same concept is kinda seen with chris’s character too. like all she’s there for is a romantic interest for knox. like cmon now she’s one of the main female characters and THIS is what she gets. i wanna know more about my girl chris!!!!

and i kind of understand why it’s set up this way since y’know it’s an all male boarding school in the 1950s—how do you fit female characters in and how are they viewed? it’s not the greatest setup of all time

this is so real. i’d also like to add on even the actors looked at the movie in a more reality-abiding way.

although we all appreciate our fantasies and delusions and fanfics and interpretations, i do appreciate how they took the more realistic route—not just the writers but the actors as well.

there was a video call interview on a youtube podcast that included dylan kussman (plays cameron), gale hansen (plays charlie), and allelon ruggiero (plays meeks). kussman made a point saying that they all talked about what would happen to their characters after the entire neil incident and charlie’s expulsion—basically after welton when they’re all adults. they all agreed that for those who went against the system that’s been made, it mostly had a bad ending or would bound to become one, cause the system is always there. it was always in-standing, and it always won no matter what. and only those who conformed to it fully or followed it closely like cameron (whether they truly believed in it or just followed it to stay out of trouble), would reap benefits cause the system was originally made rewarding for those who followed it the way it wanted.

kussman thought compared to the futures charlie and meeks would hold due to the trauma from that incident and also a combination of their parents’ expectations, cameron would most likely be the one that actually lives out a normal life. he’d be able to get a steady job and live a steady life simply because he chose to follow the rules and the system that wasn’t catered to the dead poets. and hansen and ruggiero agreed upon this, even saying how charlie was most likely to live out a life of being a banker that he didn’t like and meeks would probably be sent out to vietnam (keep in mind this is the 60s now) as a radio man and possibly die there. now would cameron actually feel satisfied by this way of life and going about things forever, always following conformity (and maybe a hint of realism similar to nolan and mcallister’s beliefs as hinted in the movie) is a completely different story. but nevertheless, cameron would continue to live on as someone who follows the rules, and the system appreciates that.

reality is, all the characters would go their separate ways. this was the event that shaped the rest of their lives, and they couldn’t go back in time and fix it no matter how hard they tried.

and nobody else outside of their class would know what happened unless they talked about it. life goes on, and the system lives on to be forever powerful and reigning.

it’s so hard to change it that only a historical revolution could spark something—could change ideas and move ways of life. but even then, there’s still a remnant of the past trauma the system has caused, and continues to live on in different ways—both subtly and not so subtly.

the dead poets society represented this revolution of ideas and wanting to get more out of life and youth. but for it to escape the way it did, it didn’t become historical... not even one bit—that part is up to you now.

so i'm in the middle of a dead poets society breakdown/spiral/hyperfixation/etc, and something I really love about the movie is how nothing changes, if that makes sense. it's a story about a system, and it says, "this is the system. this is who it hurts. the end." there's no happy ending. there's no fix. the characters are left broken by the corruption around them, and by the time someone stands up for what's right, it's too late, the damage has been done, the people have been hurt, and nothing can undo it.

i think that's what i find so fascinating about it. in a lot of modern movies and tv shows, when confronting conformity and the systems that perpetuate it, they tear it down somehow. they make history, if that makes sense. dead poets society isn't history. nothing astronomical happened, truly—it's just a blip in time, a sequence of short events that really weren't important to anyone or anything. it won't be in any history books. no one will remember it fifty, sixty years down the line.

but it happened. and it mattered. and now that you know, now that you've been warned, it's time for you to make history:)

my long list of random dps headcanons

+ includes spencer and stick !! :))))

• neil only has problems with reading in one eye and still to this day cannot figure out why. he assumes it’s genetic atp

• meeks and pitts do not like excessive gore in movies although pitts is more prone to dislike body horror— they won’t get physically sick from looking at gore they just generally don’t like it and get easily squeamish from it

• pitts likes pink lemonade simply cause it’s pink

• whenever knox gets a fortune whether from a fortune cookie or one of those mechanical tellers, he takes it so seriously for the next two weeks

• meeks and todd are slow eaters

• neil is the pickiest eater out of all the poets although he’s slowly learning to get over it and try new foods. cameron and meeks try to encourage him little by little since they used to be picky as well but got over it

• todd has sensory issues when it comes to texture. if he feels something he doesn’t like for a long period of time, he could possibly get anxious and start crying from it. example: he absolutely hates the feeling of shedded snake skin and will never ever stick his hands in those “guess what you’re touching” boxes at those wilderness exhibits— bro is traumatized from it

• despite popular belief of neil hating roller coasters, i think he has a neutral opinion on them and there’s some he can tolerate and some that he does like. although he’s very picky with roller coasters and there’s some he absolutely refuses to go on even with todd

• cameron actually likes trains a lot and hyperfixates on them (and yes there’s a bittersweet story behind it from his childhood)

• pitts loves anything s’mores flavored

• stick knows how to bake really well and the dps always ask (more like beg atp) to be his personal taste testers cause they know the finished product will be delicious

• meeks cannot eat spicy food for the life of him. he tried cajun food once and he loved it but some of the cheyenne peppers knocked him tf out- like his face was redder than his hair

• knox loves rooftop dining (rich bastard)

• charlie has a personal barber that he always goes to even when he becomes an adult

• todd’s mom is a lesbian (( i wanna post my dps family headcanons so bad cause this deserves context😭 ))

• pitts grew up with a compromised immune system and spent his days inside a lot during late elementary school and a little bit into middle school. since meeks was also pressured to do good academically at such a young age and ended up staying inside more often, the two bonded over that and meeks didn’t mind taking care of pitts when he got sick<3

• charlie and cameron are really good at golf

• cameron prefers taking chewable pills whenever possible since he has trouble swallowing larger pills

• meeks can name the 50 states in alphabetical order off the top of his head

• todd and pitts have that friendship where they always support each other no matter if they both know what they’re doing/saying is dumb and absolutely wrong by all logical standpoints

• pitts is better in biology and anatomy. the only reason why he’s passing chemistry is cause he’s good with remembering chemical reactions and organizing his work during lab projects. otherwise stoichometry fucks him up badly

• todd chews on the ice whenever he has certain cold drinks

• stick crochets in his free time— he even crocheted a blanket for spencer and spencer still uses it to this day :(((

• spencer can get really invested in dramas or sports shows and end up having really dramatic reactions at the things that happen on tv— stick has witnessed this once and bro was dying laughing the entire time. every since then, the duo watch tv together and it feels like a therapeutic bond between the two

• ^speaking of spencer and stick, they’re childhood besties!! they have that bond where even when they separate for long periods of time, they’re able to reunite and catch up/have nothing change between them

• because todd loves bird watching and meeks loves stargazing, they invite each other whenever they’re doing those activities and hype each other up whenever they spot something rare (ie. rare bird species or a rare celestial event) <3

• because stick likes to feed hummingbirds around the campus from time to time, todd sometimes joins him so he can also appreciate the birds

• whenever he reads up that an eclipse is coming up, meeks gets all the poets together on the rooftop to watch it

• pitts actually knows how to play a few songs on piano but hasn’t touched a piano in a very long time

• charlie learned to play clarinet in a orchestra/symphony that played for the town and raised money for local charities—that’s right. he’s so rich that his parents didn’t enroll him in private lessons but rather a more professional band class with other kids. he originally wanted to try out the oboe just cause (he also secretly loved the oboe solo in that one tchaikovsky piece) but his parents obviously made him do clarinet instead. he would later teach himself saxophone

• charlie has an immunity to ibuprofen and some other over the counter drugs (don’t ask why. he’s probs the type of person that gets headaches or body aches easily- whether self induced or not- and took so much ibuprofen over the course of a month that it doesn’t work anymore)

• cameron has sensitive teeth and gets toothaches easily from cold foods like ice cream. therefore, he’s careful with his portions when eating certain desserts, takes smaller sips when drinking water at restaurants (or he just asks to have no ice in his drinks), and he prefers drinking room temperature water

• stick is scared of butterflies- like i’m talking bro has a full on phobia of them cause of some traumatic childhood incident- but still thinks they’re really beautiful :(((

• ^because of this- when walking outside, spencer will make sure there aren’t butterflies nearby for stick. he’ll either swat them away or gently pick them up and make them fly away elsewhere like the true best friend he is🫡

• no matter the circumstance, spencer just does not give two fucks about true crime whatsoever. you can make him watch a true crime doc and he’ll either get bored or be like “really? that’s all the killer can do?” “…couldn’t they like- i don’t know- not enter a complete stranger’s home??” “i could’ve beaten up that guy you know.”

• knox and spencer have a brotherly relationship and have known each other since middle school. knox would invite spencer to tag along with him and charlie, obviously tease him in the middle of class, and he’d ask for help on school work. plus knox and charlie have stood up for him on multiple occasions and help raise his confidence in social situations

• stick has hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) episodes from time to time. sometimes they sync up with spencer’s random nosebleeds and they both sit in the nurse’s office together.

i’m about to do another quick educational post on bleach blonde hair color and why people’s perceptions of haircolor get messy.

~ different types of lighting exposes undertones that make your hair look a different color but also gives us an idea of what natural hair color you have or possibly artificial (ie. most of the time, brown hair has red or orange undertones unless it’s a more golden brown hair color/blonde hair has yellow or golden undertones most of the time unless the hair has cool or neutral tones with artificial haircolor/sometimes natural level 1 black hair can even expose blue undertones because it’s so dark). we also use this knowledge to pinpoint what haircolor someone starts off with and what they want to change it to if they ask for a haircolor service.

i haven’t seen anyone say todd has bleach blonde hair so far but i’m telling you rn that’s absolutely wild. natural level 10 bleach blondes (which is the highest level you can go with most haircolor manufacturers) is pale white hair with very little yellow undertones.

however i will say this- bleach blondes for certain (not all) manufacturers may not be as bright as a pale white color or will include more yellow undertones in their formula which may lead to some people thinking todd is bleach blonde. but traditionally saying he’s naturally a bleach blonde/close to that hair color is not a good guess and i’m telling you a lot of hairstylists rn including myself will politely disagree with you.

lemme show you visuals cause that always helps set the scene.

definitely not a bleach blonde. however, like i mentioned above, certain manufacturers have a different swatch for level 10 blonde which may match todd’s hair color.

here’s an example from the brand wella (i apologize for the quality but you’re still able to see what i’m talking about):

their idea of level 10 lightest blonde is not what most manufacturers have and is not what’s conventionally taught in beauty school. their level 10 for most manufacturers is another two maybe even three levels down. therefore, if there are people who constantly look at manufacturers like this (which it isn’t their fault. not everyone has the same amount of knowledge about haircolor as others) then they might go out thinking traditional bleach blondes aren’t like the pictures i’ve put above.

to add onto my point, here’s another brand and how they set up the level system:

wella’s level 10 would be a level 8 for this brand and considered dark blonde rather than lightest blonde.

overall, clients (unless knowledgeable) always have a different view on what hair colors/haircolors look like versus how hairstylists conventionally view haircolors the way most of us were taught if we’ve gone to beauty school—and of course we’re properly taught how to work around these misconceptions.

just keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to do research or question what’s out there<3

lemme just start off with the fact that this boy is very beautiful but not only is his anxiety making him look like a confused ass goldfish at times but also it’s making his hair confused cause like in some shots, he does look like a bit of a brunette-

but then there’s other shots especially when he’s outside or under a lot of bright lighting where i see more yellow/golden undertones seen within blonde hair

so ofc i had to whip out more photos from other movies and like…

he looks more like he has brown hair but there’s a few blonde streaks in there like- give me a goddamn break

overall, i’m judging by the level system (as hairstylists are usually taught in school) and of course overall knowledge of undertones and other colors out there. there’s multiple conclusions i’ve come to:

1. he has lightest brown hair (level 5) ( i can’t put a link to the exact image i’m using but you can search up “level system hair color” if you wanna see what i’m referencing to, however depending on the brand of hair color/company the level system is from, there might be slight alterations due to the way that brand formulates their haircolor and how it interacts with the natural colors so not every image will match the names i’m using )

from certain shots, he has overwhelmingly more red undertones in his hair which is the undertones that are exposed more in brunettes. it looks more like a golden brown or possibly coppery brown color in some instances.

2. he has dark blonde hair (level 6)

if my eyes aren’t tricking me, there’s also shots where the undertones that are exposed are more orange-coppery/yellow-golden-leaning which indicate more blonde hair but it’s definitely a darker blonde no doubt.

3. bro has mixed melanin

yes there are people who have hair that naturally has more than one color. the most common example we see is those who have grey recently coming in or salt and pepper hair, however, this can also happen with other natural hair colors like browns, blondes, and gingers. he very well may have more brown hair but then there’s streaks or even patches of dark blonde hair mixed in there.

4. he has changing hair color ⭐️

there are people i’ve met whose hair color has changed overtime and typically blondes are more susceptible to it. especially when seasons change, sun exposure can affect hair color and make it so your hair lightens in the summer but darkens in the winter (just look up sun bleaching like why tf does a star from that far away have that effect??). however, this still means he has some sort of hair color whether it’s more blonde or brunette leaning—that’s up to you to decide from the hair colors above.

as you can see, i starred it cause i personally believe this the most. ( i also believe this happens to his brother jeffrey as well to a different extent )

5. he could’ve had his hair dyed

i don’t personally believe this but it’s a possibility i put on the table from a hairstyling perspective (plus the actors could’ve gotten hair done before shooting the movie which i mean they did get their hair cut so who knows what else they could’ve gotten touched up on their hair- maybe even chemical services🤷‍♀️). it could possibly be highlights that are starting to fade but even then it doesn’t look like it to me.

^ this conclusion is hard to tell just from photos at times and lighting/editing/cameras used in movies could mess around with it more :/

it’s much more accurate to just analyze hair in person.

~ so that’s my take + other options if you can’t come to a conclusion or believe something else.
