Hi my name is Emily and I love musical theatre and this is my blog about it because it can make me smile even when I think I can't. Also this blog is all of over place but it's all mt xoxo
Hamilton: An American Musical portrays the founding fathers in a far more positive light than they deserve and neglects to mention the horrific impact these men had on both African Americans as a collective and the individual Black people they interacted with and portrays America through rose-tinted glasses
AND
Hamilton : An American Musical was instrumental in igniting a new wave of musical appreciation and modern musicals that sparked a generation's interest in history while also giving recognition and roles to incredible Actors and Actresses of color and is a musical masterpiece
Are opinions that can and should coexist. It's okay to be critical of the things you consume. It's encouraged even.
listening to bandstand and just thinkin bout how welcome home is rewritten to be this hopeful, happy song about a woman waiting for her love to come home and basically glosses over the horrors the guys faced and how julia’s voice is more high and sweet but during the finale her voice is more low and more gravelly and you can tell how emotional she is because that’s how julia originally wrote it and everyone that came home is still fighting their own war they said fuck making people comfortable they need to know what really happens
Since we’re all stuck inside and bored, I’ve put together some underrated and under-appreciated musicals to discover while you’re inside!
& Juliet
Plot: A jukebox musical about if Juliet hadn’t killed herself at the end of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, writes Juliet her own story and gives her some new friends. Shakespeare, however, isn’t willing to let his wife take over the story entirely, and he has other plans. Has a canon non-binary character, a canon pansexual character, and a canon bi character, along with songs that are absolute bops and a kickass female empowerment message.
Emojiland
Plot: No, this is not “The Emoji Movie: The Musical”. Emojiland is a completely different story about emojis in a phone who take one another at face value. For example, there’s a smiling face with depression and a nerd face who’s too smart for his own good. While it may seem cutesy and simple on the surface, Emojiland has a much deeper meaning than it appears to. Has canon wlw, Lesli Margherita, Lucas Steele, and more absolute bops.
We Are the Tigers
Plot: A high-school cheerleading team is having their annual team sleepover. However, the night turns deadly quickly, and soon the cheerleaders are left with three of their friends dead and the murderer still at large. A great whodunnit that blends the slasher genre of the 80s with a teenage drama. Has canon wlw, many strong female characters (only one male character is ever shown onstage), power ballads, a murder mystery, Wonu Ogunfowora, and girls belting their hearts out.
Jagged Little Pill
Plot: I’ve seen this musical compared to RENT quite a bit, which is fair. However, Jagged Little Pill is more than just RENT 2.0. It’s a jukebox musical containing the music from Alanis Morissette’s iconic 90s album. The musical focuses on the Healy family, and their individual struggles. While it is a pretty heavy musical, it touches on important topics such as racism, sexual assault, sexuality, and addiction. Has a canonically bi character, strong female characters, and absolute bangers.
Starry
Plot: If you’re a fan of Starkid, you’ll probably notice a few familiar faces in this cast. This is a pop-rock musical about the lives of Vincent Van Gogh and his brother Theo, all the way up until Vincent’s death. The music is beautiful, the story is touching, and Dylan Saunders is singing his lungs out. What’s not to love? Features Mariah Rose Faith, Dylan Saunders, absolute bangers, Jaimie Lynn Beatty, and Jeff Blim.
If you have any other underrated musicals you want to shout out, add them in the rbs!
So today I had to drive by the Pentagon on my way to do things and as soon as it came into view “38 Planes” from Come From Away came on shuffle and it was such a perfect moment so shoutout to the Spotify shuffle feature for making that happen
