I used misting bottles filled with rit dye for this part of the project. I rinsed it until the water ran clear and then let it dry completely. I was thrilled with how it looked and put it in the washer.
It came out looking like this:
I was crushed last night.
It's actually a super pretty color now in person, there's hints of light yellow, pink, and Peach in it. Too bad it's completely not what I wanted for this project. 馃槙 I'm going to try to dye it again using a different method, and if that still doesn't work I'll break out the acrylic paint and fabric paint medium.
Legs and feet were added and allowed to cure for an additional 2 days.
Then I sprayed it with white primer and started painting.
I used one of my favorite techniques which is called drybrushing. It involves slathering every nook and cranny with the darkest shade of the color you want that area to be, letting it dry, then getting a fan brush or something similar, putting paint on it and blotting out the excess until it's laying down a light dusting of color, then lightly brush over the dark area. This technique can make things with texture look amazing. I usually do 2 layers, one with the actual color as a midtone, then a lighter color as highlights. It's a super east, quick technique that gives results like this:
Then after that I started blocking in other colors and adding markings. I used a pearlescent, color shifting white paint for the body. Unfortunately it doesn't photograph well with my phone, but it looks amazing in person.
This is the latest progress photo I have:
Now I need to seal it, carefully pry the foam clay off the tube, put the fabric on the tube, then reapply the foam clay design. Should look nice and neat in the end.
I also have to make the case lid match and attach some form of ribbon so I can tie it to my sash.
Right now I'm working on a human version of Mitzutsune from the Monster Hunter series. I plan on having a folding fan that has bubble wands on the ends that will release a tide of bubbles when I unfurl it. I needed something to hold the fan in though, but thankfully some lovely coworkers saved this shipping tube for me.
I thought for a bit about what design I wanted to do, and settled on having a tint Mitzutsune winding around the tube on a purple fabric background.
I wound a measuring tape around the tube in roughly the path I wanted Mini-Mitzu to take, then used those measurements to make a rough pattern of what I wanted to wind around the fan case, then taped saran wrap over it.
I used foam clay, which was something I've never tried before. It's got a nice long work time but its a little hard to melt seperate pieces together smoothly (a little water helps though).
Added a crystal into his eye socket for an extra bit of sparkle.
It took me about four hours to finish, but here's the unpainted version:
I left the legs off to attach them later (because I wasn't entirely sure my plan would work.)
In the meantime I glued a layer of craft foam around the shipping tube and taped saran wrap over it. The plan is to wrap the foam clay around it, paint it, then slide it off the tube using the saran wrap so that I can then put on the fabric cover and reapply the foam clay. I didn't feel like trying to paint this on fabric. >_<
The aim of this blog is to share cosplay tips and tricks I've learned while doing this amazing hobby for over 15 years, as well as post pictures of my own work.
My three-legged cat G'raha will also likely make an appearance.
My artwork is all posted over at @inkimpart
