Glad to hear it, honestly. Once I simmered down a bit it struck me "trying to find the happy medium" is probably what's going on.
Was going to write this as a reply to something but realized it needed its own post.
The tl;dr is that, from the looks of it, Automattic absolutely has every intention of turning Tumblr into a marketing media platform.
I work for a marketing company. I build websites.
Specifically, I build websites on Wordpress.org, which is operated by the Wordpress Foundation.
The Wordpress Foundation is the non-profit counterpart to the for-profit company Automattic.
Automattic, as we know, is the company that currently owns Tumblr.
Now, the thing about Wordpress.org (not to be confused with Wordpress.com) is that it's very, VERY popular amongst small businesses. Not only can you build a fully-customizable website with relative ease, you can also add an online shop using another Automattic product: Woocommerce.
Not too long ago, I noticed a new feature was added to Woocommerce: A button next to each Woocommerce product which allows you to Blaze them to Tumblr right from the comfort of your dashboard:
Tumblr media
This is what I get when I click that little "Blaze" button...
Tumblr media
As someone who understands these tools, I understand the potential implications of these features:
The Blaze feature is basically an up-and-coming ad campaign system that's directly integrated with Woocommerce websites, which I think is the first ad marketing system of its kind. You don't have to log into a social media account to advertise your products, use a second-party integration, or even pay another service to manage your social media ads. It's all baked right into your business's website.
THIS is their planned money-maker, folks, not the rainbow checkmarks or crab armies. And the reason why Automattic would do this kind of thing is simple: Businesses are wealthier than individuals. By implementing a B2B service, Automattic can make more money off of Tumblr than user subscriptions and shoelaces will ever provide.
It's all the same song and dance. Businesses can now shove more ads into your face in a new, convenient fashion. It'll be ads that don't look like ads disguised amongst ads that do look like ads, just like it is with Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and literally every other marketing media service that calls itself a "social" media.
(Tumblr's new video feature? My guess is that it's there to prepare for video-format Blaze campaigns. Influencer-style videos are the only kind of ad format Gen-Z is receptive to, which is why you're suddenly seeing videos on every platform.)
All they really gotta do now is make Tumblr look appealing to the normies so they can draw in a userbase that isn't trying to escape the onslaught of commercialism that plagues other sites.
Tumblr is one of the last true social medias we have; a place where content is made purely for the sake of talking about it. But given the writing on the wall...I doubt it'll stay that way.

It will change what kind of content people create, actually.
Right now, the stuff that gets attention on Tumblr is stuff that's interesting, original, and kind of oddball.
Users emulate this when creating new content because emulating the culture around us is how we feel included, and also how we demonstrate participation and receptiveness to the social environment we're in.
But the kind of content that becomes popular on marketing media platforms isn't the stuff that's interesting—it's the stuff that's sensational. Because sensational is what sells. Marketing media platforms need "sensational" to be the popularizing factor for all content because that's what makes it effective as a marketing device.
So even if you block and ignore the ads, you will still see a change in what gets popular, which will change the nature of the content people produce, which will change the culture.
It's actually very fucking terrifying how much psychological manipulation is behind marketing and advertisement, and it needs regulation because it's causing some very serious problems.

"Just get an ad-blocker."
My sweet summer children, the issue is not whether you see Blazed content or not. It's about Tumblr becoming a marketing media platform, which will give you a completely different and far less fulfilling user experience than a social media one does.
Everything Tumblr's current userbase loves about Tumblr has to do with the fact it provides real human connection. People make jokes, goof around, have meaningful conversations, read crazy tales from other people's lives, and form oddball holidays about Caesar getting stabbed. You see content you opt into seeing and don't see content you haven't, and any content that becomes popular does so because it's interesting, not because you managed to hit the jackpot on the algorithm slot machine.
You know what Tumblr has? Culture. Tumblr is one of the very few websites where a public-facing culture grows organically out of human interaction. I get to see people being people rather than the idea of being people.
But this will all gradually dissolve as Automattic adds more features on Tumblr that cater to the needs of businesses. Why? Because the marketing needs of businesses and the social needs of people are inherently incompatible. You can't have a hybrid marketing-social media website without it being kind of shitty at both, and "being kind of shitty at conversions" is not what gets businesses to shell out for your ad services.
I've love to be wrong, by the way.
It's possible this is why we're seeing so many different avenues of revenue from Tumblr; it's an attempt to try to retain this site's culture while providing some kind of competitive edge in the (critically out-of-control) advertisement market. (There's literally too much content out there to make SEO work for everyone and it's only going to get worse as time goes on.)
But whether it's to keep Tumblr afloat in the chaos, or to smokescreen some larger commercialization of Tumblr, it looks bad. And as someone who loves this website and hates advertisements, I'm upset about it.
Was going to write this as a reply to something but realized it needed its own post.

I've been told ADHD may have had some kind of evolutionary benefit, but it just struck me earlier this week what that benefit may have been: To be a highly-effective Night Watch.
For most of our history, humans have lived in small social groups that needed constant protection, including at night. It would make perfect sense that a small subsect of humans would be specialized in this and evolve traits unique for nighttime living.
Think about it.
The night is not a time for getting manual work done because humans have comparatively poor night vision. So it makes sense that a nighttime-specialized brain wouldn't be configured for doing manual labor. Instead, its executive function is used for other things: Rapid problem-solving, innovation, creativity, and other forms of social enrichment. As social creatures, these are as essential to humanity as food and shelter is.
ADHDers are quick to distract with noises. This is clearly beneficial for nighttime living. You could be deep in conversation/thought, and the slightest noise would suddenly direct your attention. Your rapid cognitive skills would allow you to assess if it's game, a predator, or something else. This specialty wouldn't be needed in the daytime, when nocturnal animals sleep and the noise of human civilization will drive other critters away.
I imagine the "hyperactivity" of ADHD is a positively magical tool for persistence hunting. For example: You realize the sound in the bushes was game, and the next thing you know, you're in hot pursuit. The persistence hunter is effective because of adrenaline and hyperfocus.
Hyperfocus is also good for rapidly sorting through and producing unique data—something the daytime people might not have the time or energy to do with their daily workflow. Perhaps one of your nighttime buddies has a special interest in developing a better irrigation system, which he'll educate the daytime people about in the morning. Perhaps another night person has spent literal hours coming up with a story to tell at the evening fires and is collaborating with a friend to act it out. This is the highlight entertainment of each day.
I've also noticed ADHDers tend to gravitate toward spirituality quite a bit, which makes sense if the ADHD brain is the nighttime brain. Nighttime people would have the time to develop spiritual practices, so they'd most likely be the ones fulfilling their social group's spiritual needs.
This overall specialization in cognitive labor may also be why Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria is a thing in ADHDers. Because this brain is designed to think, it's designed to understand, and emotions are a huge part of understanding.
As a final thought: I've not met a single ADHD person who didn't want to sleep at weird hours. Many are night owls. Many say they're most attentive before the day has started or after everyone has gone to bed. This may very well be by design.
All of this is just me speculating, but I dunno—the more I think about this, the more it seems to check out.
(I do want to say that I don't intend this to be used to deny treatments like stimulant medication for ADHD; it still has its downsides. But at the same time, I think it's time to stop pathologizing it and to start considering its function.)

Let’s talk about Odinism.
Despite claiming to be an “indigenous European religion,” Odinism is neither ancient nor remotely harmless. It grew out of the original Nazi movement and fully retains the white nationalist ideals it was built upon.
Research psychologist Arie Kruglanski says white nationalist radicalization is comprised of three things: A need for significance, a narrative that permits violence, and a community that validates that narrative.
Odinism messaging exploit the first part by projecting sentiments of self-empowerment and anti-authoritarianism out into the public, attracting “lone wolves” who resonate with this messaging. This is something I’ve noticed with Odinist memes.
There is a website called Life After Hate. It was founded by former extremists members who escaped the white power movement to help people leave hate groups. They can also provide information for those witnessing the radicalization of a family member or friend. Please keep them as a resource and contact them if you need.

It would be an extra damn shame if you used:
#whitelivesmatter #alllivesmatter #bluelivesmatter
Because that would give it consistency and focus, which would be even more detrimental.
It would be quite a shame if every Heathen on here were to mobilize on Twitter for #WhiteoutWednesday 😉 and white supremacist hashtags were completely overtaken with BLM messaging.
REMEMBER - this is about focusing on Black Lives Matter and Black voices and needs- not just provoking Nazis. Keep to the mission! Feel free to use other dog whistles in the hashtags.
