In the video you’ll find some of the people close to me and the things in life they find beautiful. The main voice in the video is mine, and I am featured at the end as well, the last set of eyes. I try to find the beauty in everything and look at others without judgement, regardless of how I feel about myself. And I think it’s important that we acknowledge that beauty isn’t just on the surface of our sins, but it’s everywhere.

So I took my own footage from a PSA project I did last semester about Depression and I sped it up, added Fuck Up by Tana Mongeau over it, and had it reverse the cycle back to bed, then start it again at the end. I think the song fits the message well and speeding up my footage helped keep up the idea of going through the motions. I reversed it mid way through because I wanted to give the idea of like an endless cycle of some sort.

Fair warning! This will probably make you cry!

I saw the Happier music video recently and it had me straight up ugly SOBBING. I had to suffer sooo now you do too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I chose See You Again over it because it fit well. The fading to and from black and white throughout the video is meant to signify that life is better with dogs!

I’m pretty familiar with Premier because I’m a video production major, so this assignment wasn’t too difficult for me, EXCEPT for the fact that youtube blocked the video for copyright content and then the file was too large for tumblr so I had to mess with exporting and find the right one that would get it below 100 MB.

Project #2: The Loop

The source of my inspiration is the film Baraka. This documentary is a non-narrative, however it speaks with a powerful soundtrack.  Featuring sounds that can be heard in the locations focused on in the film. There is a duality of humanity presented in the film. We are visually stunned with breathtaking views of Earth and the people that inhabit it. There is extraordinary emphasis on culture of all varieties.

We also see a darker side of humanity. This is where my interest lies, in the ideas of human industry. People as distribution systems, hurting other living creatures as a way to earn a wage. Then the machines that can replace humans making wages. I hope this is seen as a repeating reminder that life and jobs are not always a glamorous choice, sometimes they are our only option.

This work relates to my previous work and interest in film. I have a passion for unique and honest cinema. When I first saw Baraca as a teenager, I marveled at the brilliant varieties of humans on the planet. The world opened up to me. I’d never seen anything like it. I adore the contrast of natural beauty and the normalizing of industry.

Project 2: Looping GIFs

For this project, I chose to work thematically.  I am a music major studying jazz guitar, and I thought what better way to showcase a series than to pick ten of my favorite jazz guitarists and highlight each of them playing their instrument.  I was initially inspired by the instruction to consider rhythm and repetition.  When I see those words, my mind automatically thinks in musical terms, and I wanted to blend the concepts of musical rhythm and repetition into a set of moving images that also have a visual rhythm and repetition.  I attempted to find clips that would appear as seamless as possible when I looped them, and it certainly worked better for some than others due to severely limited video options for some of the older players.  Nevertheless, I am quite satisfied with how they all turned out.

You did a wonderful job at capturing the mood and emotional tone. It seems very raw and intense. I think you did really well in rendering these gifs without taking away from what would be seen in the video. Super cool that she’s a poet too, and it isn’t just from a music video. Well done. (:

Project #2: The Loop

For this project, the series of ten GIFs that I chose is from a video from one of my favorite artists, Segovia Amil. Segovia is a poet and in the video used to make GIFs was from her poem Genesis Cries. I tried to simplify the video without taking away its beauty and mood. I tried to capture the drama and the dark, intense emotions she is usually writing about and makes the audience feel. Her writing is very personal to me and I think these visuals portray what she writes about well. Her writing tends to have themes about individuality and the way we react to the world around us. It is haunting in a beautiful way. In the GIFs, I am hoping I showed these interactions and made it look just as poetic as her writing sounds.

Nice pun ;) This gif series is so true that it hurts. The entire set tells a story and fits together well. It’s unfortunate how many people live in this loop day to day. Great job!

Project #2: The Loop

Life can feel a little loopy when not much changes in your day to day routine over an extended period of time. I chose to craft my series of gif images around the theme of working a full-time job (when it is not your passion). Outside of how relatable the theme is, I think it further emphasizes the “loop” feeling that both gifs and 9 to 5, Monday through Friday jobs can give you. Finding the perfect moment of film ended up being a longer process than I had originally anticipated due to the time it takes to perfectly sync the rhythm between the first and last frame. Also, you may not notice if viewing on a mobile device, but the Futurama coffee drinking gif is dramatically smaller than the others. I was not willing to sacrifice the message of the gif by shortening the length of the scene so I had to resize it to smaller dimensions so that it would be able to load on Tumblr. Luckily, when viewing on a phone (like most gifs are viewed) it stretches the dimensions to match. Overall, the process was fun and I found that shortening some of the scenes into loops actually made the moments more intriguing.

Oooh, what an interesting take on Pennywise. Someone who knows nothing about It might not have any idea what is really going on. Eery! I also find the movie to be humorous, it’s hard for me to consider it a real horror because the comedic relief is often. Especially in the newer one. Good job!

PROJECT #2: THE LOOP: I have watch this movie countless times, and every time, I notice something different. This time, I noticed that this clown, (different from the Pennywose from 2017) has a more cheerful, and funny side (although he is suppose to be terrifying). And that’s what I love about art, what some people may find horrorrific, others may have a different take on it. This movie to me, is such a cheesy, funny, and one of a kind ‘thrillers’. To me is like that ‘must watch movie’ every year for Halloween, almost like a tradition. These images represent a happy clown, yet a scary character that has fun in scaring people.

Super cool! Something I never noticed either. I had an editing project last semester where we had to edit a music video to some footage, and the footage was all in the same type of setting. Nice description of your assignment too, and where you were going with it. (:

GIF Project/The Loop

For this project, I decided to show how although trends come and go, technology improves, music and media changes, one thing that I have seen as a constant trend in music and media is the “Western”/“Desert Chic”. This trend has never really left. From the Spice Girls to Post Malone, we have all seen music artists use deserts as a set for their music videos at least once. The beautiful scenery and sunsets make it easy to produce a beautiful video without the need of too much editing. Yet, there are a few differences throughout the years in these music videos. Back in the 90′s, everything had to have a futuristic feel to it. In the first GIF, the Spice Girls are some form of future alien girls, and they seem to be on some sort of intergalactic mission to track down a boy. But as time progressed, we began to see more of the road trip/Americana feel to desert-setting music videos, especially becuase of the fashion trends that became popular on social media in the early 2010′s that music festivals such as Coachella, Camp Flog Gnaw, and Bonaroo began.

To explain, the beginning tends to show how artists were trying to look stylish and fashion-forward in their video, but then we slowly go more into modern-day music and see how artists are fully embracing the desert/western vibes. Lots of fringe, daisy dukes, and vintage cars and American flags. It’s funny how years ago we would have to add a future or techy element to everything, and now we’re all about the nostalgia. The more vintage cars, flags, and cutoff and high-waisted clothing, the better. It’s funny isn’t it? Back in time we couldn’t wait to advance technologically, and now we wish we could go back to the old days.

Project 2: Loop

I decided to do my 10 animated Gifs’ on the game Legend of Zelda Botw, cause why not? Since I spend so much time playing the game, I thought, why not showcase the many things I do over and over for the project? These things include cooking, eating, talking to Beetle, because at some point in the game he becomes like a security blanket. It also involves horrid blood moons and skipping the cut scene for them. Then there’s the more annoying circumstance of running out of stamina during fights and paragliding that results in drowning. And the best of them all, trying to climb a mountain or wall while it’s raining. At some point I just learned to count while I climb, jump, slip, then climb some more. It’s the most effective way if you don’t have Revali’s gale. Honestly, games make me happy, and I was happy while making this project so it turned out to be a lot of fun.

Project 2: Loop

I decided to do this project about my best friend! This is Kahri, she’s a Red Heeler/Lab mix that I rescued when she was 8 weeks old. She just turned 5 in July. These are some gifs taken from videos I’ve gotten over the years. She is the first dog I got after moving away from home, so she has an extra special place in my heart. She’s super spunky and loves to high five! I wouldn’t trade her for anything in the world.

This project was fun! I’m glad I chose to do it about Kahri, it made it a lot more meaningful and brought a lot of warm and good emotions up as I sifted through things of her over the last 5 years.

Exercise 2

Literally no better representation of Jenna Marbles than this gif. Was super interesting learning how to do it on photoshop! I’ve used tumblr gif maker and giphy before, so it was cool seeing a way that actually gives you a lot more freedom. This was a fun assignment!

Reading/Response 10 gifs

The blinking guy is one of my favorite memes that I use consistently even though it kind of died out. It’s the perfect response to so many things.

Another perfect response that I use quite frequently. 

I like this one because there is no obvious time where we can tell it loops back, it just looks like it goes on forever.

Gotta love Futurama, and skeptical Fry is just another great example of a response gif. (Can you tell I use gifs a lot for responses?)

I send this one a lot when my friends aren’t making sense, even if it isn’t a question. Meme trash.

Gif Reading/Response

It was interesting reading so many articles discussing gifs as an art form, as they have always been a form of memes or offered some great responses to conversations for me. I also didn’t realize that people are able to profit off of gif making. I find the cultural impact of gifs really interesting, I feel like I've grown up in the time where they used to not be quite as relevant and now myself and every single person I talk to uses gifs on a daily basis. The articles really proved that there is art all around us and in ways we don’t expect. Pretty cool!

PROJECT #1

My theme for this project was the idea of History repeating itself. How sometimes world events feel familiar because we have perhaps already been through something alike in the past. I merged two or more events in history, new and old, to depict a collage of how they are similar. The meanings or cultures might change but a lot of things are doomed to be repeated. Acknowledging the past and planning to do good is the only way we can create a better tomorrow.

Wow! This is so cool! The editing is flawless, it looks like there really are multiples of you both. I like the direction you went, it was different and more relaxed but still impactful. Very nice!

Selection series: I decided to approach this assignment in a witty way, and depict all the activities my fiancé and I do on the daily basis, as well as to emphasize that time can pass by so fast and one can do so many things in the same room by duplicating him and I doing different activities. From getting ready, to having a snack, to gaming and relaxing on the couch, time can pass by rather quickly! It’s fascinating to stand back and see all the activities and pastimes one has in order to keep ourselves entertained. While making this series, it also revealed to me just how much time one spends using technology and forms of media. From video games to scrolling down a news feed, our world has slowly began to revolve around our tech accessories. Overall though, I really enjoyed this project, and I hope you do as well. Also, make sure to go out and get some sun once in a while, and try not to stay indoors so much!
